Lost the Lock Icon on my Network

My network keeps losing the lock icon that displays with the network name. I think this is happening with power shortages or outages.  I have checked the settings online and it says WPA Preshared Key.  Is the network still secure????  I have a WRT54G wireless router.

Well in this case it should not happen but if it is happening try to change the Security mode of the Router i.e open the Router setup page.. Goto wireless tab, click on wireless security sub tab and change the security mode....
Then Save the settings... After doing these settings observe that lock icon shows up or not...
Secondly if you see it is showing WPA Preshared Key then yes it is well secured network..

Given that you are logged in as that user, and most likely the admin user of the Mac, then it makes sense that you can change your own settings. If you were logged in as a different user, then you would not have access to change the settings for this admin account.

What does it mean on an ipad2 when the lock icon beside the signal strength comes on and off, and an intermittant lock appears on the left beside the SSID name?
I am trying to connect to a Cisco network, and even though the SSID is open authentication the ipad will either say it cannot connect or ask for the password.

That's a "resize" arrow. Try relaunching Finder (Cmd+Opt+Esc) or >Force Quit

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and since the "lock" icon never appears when accessing secure websites, where should I look for it?

I just recently upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and now the "lock" icon doesn't appear anywhere (I can find) when accessing secure websites. I haven't seen it once. It used to appear in the lower right corner of the screen. I also have Norton Internet Security.

Padlock is no longer part of Firefox; it was removed beginning in Firefox 4. The padlock shows that there is a secure connection but does not supply additional information. You could have made a typographical error and still have been connected to a secure connection. The padlock was replaced in Firefox 3 with the Site Identity Button. • I a owner and administrator. I can't change any file permissions. Help tells me to 'get info' on a file, them click on the lock icon to enter password. The lock icon is not present on any files I 'get info' on. How can I change permissions

I attached an external drive to my macbook pro for backup purposes. I found that the device is 'read only' for me. I read that I could change permissions by selecting 'get info' for a item and clicking the lock icon to submit my password. The lock icon is not displayed on any 'info' window for any file on my macbook, much less the attached drive. I am the only user and administrator as far as I know. What steps can I take to change permissions? Thanks. My 1st post.

How can I tell? The 'get info' window has no lock and under sharing and permissions, on says 'you can only read'. I did a get info on the Macintosh HD and it had a lock on it but said I could only read, for what that it worth.

This is a little confusing since you say you have forgotten your password and then the system says you have not entered a password.  Even with an Admin account you must have a password to install software.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 or above, you can change the admin password by restarting holding the Command and R keys, from the menu bar select Utilities, then Terminal.  When the Terminal window opens, at the cursor type exactly:
    resetpassword
and press Enter.  When the Reset Password window opens, select the internal hard drive, and then the user account.  Type a new password twice, leave the Hint blank, and then Save.  Accept the next dialog that opens, and at the bottom of the Reset Password window agree to resetting the home directory permissions.
Quit the Reset Password window, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.
And you have a new password for your account.

The YouTube app is no longer included in the native apps. Apple recommends you visit the website.
Perhaps google will make another app and make it available in the App Store soon, I miss it too.

  • In system preferences shouldn't the lock icon be unlocked before a password can be changed?

In system preferences should the lock icon be unlocked before a password can be changed?

You have to know the old password in order to change to the new one if you select the user anyway, so no.

  • In System Preferences, I click on the LOCK icon, and it says AUTHENTICATING and starts spinning but nothing happens

I'm trying to make changes to System Preference, but I'm unable to do so because the LOCK icon will not unlock.  It just keeps saying AUTHENTICATING and spinning and although I wait, it never stops authenticating.  I am the ADMIN, so this is not a guest user issue.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account to see if you get the same thing.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.
