Lost timeline & canvas

Hi there whilst working on a project i closed my canvas and timeline & saved it. Now i cant get them to open on this specific project. The options to open them are greyed out in the window tab. please help

In the Browser double-click your sequence icon and they will reappear.
If there is no sequence, just create a new one and double-click it.

Hi-
Just started using FCE4. My timeline and canvas windows disappeared and are grayed out in the Windows>arrange section. How do I get them back?

Had same problem a month ago. Fixed by this instruction
"Close FCE and go to Home > Library > Preferences. Trash any file (not folder) that has a name including FinalCutExpress or FinalCutPro. Now find the folder Final Cut Express/Pro User Data in the Prefs folder and open it. Trash Prefs, Prof Cache, Obj Cache (sometimes called MOA and POA Cache). Then, of course, repair permissions".

Lost Timeline and Canvas on Monitors

I just downloaded some HDV clips and was in the process of reviewing them in the browser when, for some reason, Canvas and Timeline disappeared from the monitors and are greyed-out on the Window menu as selections... Can't figure out why...Any ideas?

hmmmm, strange indeed.
perhaps if you opened a sequence you'd gain those windows back.

Rendering issue in the timeline/canvas

Hello there,
Whenever I try to to manipulate the display of a clip by dragging the image and repositioning the clip by its handles (using image + wireframe mode) in the timeline, I am unable to preview it in real time (requires rendering). What puzzles me is that if I try and do the same with the same clip in the viewer I am able to play and preview in real time. Is there any plausible reason for this?
I've tried to change sequence playback settings to low quality but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It will vary from machine to machine (more power = more RT effects in the Canvas/Timeline) but if it's off, turn on "Unlimited" in the RT button in the Timeline window if it's off.

Have lost the canvas and the custom layout option is greyed out (no longer possible to click on).

how can we re-trieve?
have tried to re-open and customise but keep getting the above.

Have you closed the Canvas? Have you gone to the menu Window > Canvas to toggle it on?
If so and it has not appeared, have you moved the Canvas so that it is hidden, or mostly off screen? Type Control - U to reposition all windows in their standard position.
Is the timeline missing as well? If so go to the menu File > New > Sequence and create a new sequence. Does it reappear then?
If all this does not help, then your preferences may have become corrupt and you many need to trash them. Go to:

Again, if you are following this procedure and it is not working, try trashing your preferences.

Timeline & Canvas gone

I've been working on a 90 minute video, near the end. I was working on the iBook and needed to see the desktop, clicked on the red X and closed the canvas and timeline windows. I cannot reopen them. The drop-down menu has those two windows greyed out, command-2 or command-3 doesn't open them. Suggestions, please. And yes, I know I'm crazy for installing FCP on my iBook, but I use it at home when I can't get to the big monster. It hasn't given me trouble (except time) on smaller projects.

To clarify what worldwidestudios suggested, double-click the Sequence in the Browser window. That will reopen the Canvas and Timeline windows.
Next time you want to see the desktop, instead of closing a window in FCP, go to the main Final Cut Pro menu at the top of the screen and select "Hide Final Cut Pro" or hit Command h To bring it back up, simply click on the FCP icon in the Dock.

2 questions - lost timeline + streamclip question

First off, everything was fine. New to this, but messing around with FCP 4.5. Suddenly, no matter how many times I close and re-open, I can't see the canvas or timeline. Double-clicked the sequence. Nothing. (What's the difference between a clip and a sequence, by the way?) I go to "Window" and "canvas" and "timeline" are grayed out. Crazy....
Also, I've got mpeg Streamclip Beta, but don't have the option to output to ProRes...?

You need to spend a little time learning the application.
A sequence is what you edit in and appears in the timeline window. A clip when opened from the browser appears in the viewer. The sequence icon has two horizontal yellows bars on it. Do you have one of those in the browser? If you double click on one the timeline window will open.
Also, when double-clicking on an empty sequence, it says "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
This does not appear when you open a sequence, but when you open a clip in a codec you don't have access to, like ProRes, which is not available with the version you're using. ProRes comes with FCP6 or later. If you install that application the ProRes codec will be available in MPEG Streamclip.

Timeline/Canvas

Just a quick question. I'm new to Final Cut and I accidentally closed the timeline and canvas and I can't get them to show up again. They are grayed out in the window section in the menu. How do I get them back?

Double-click the Sequence in the Browser to reopen the Canvas and Timeline windows.

Hi there, does anybody know why I suddenly cant access Canvas and timeline in my project ? They are grey in the Window menu

I remember when tom answered this question for me... its frustrating when you don't know why FCE is acting the way it is.
Think of it like this you're timeline and canvas are essentially the same thing as far as the app is concerned if you move around in you're canvas you move around in you're timeline.
You can kinda think about the view and browser being a duo in a little different way. They are where you preview you're media either by file name or by clip preview.
If the browser doesn't tell the timeline that it has a space available for you to put you're media, neither the timeline or canvas will appear.
Open you're project hit Command + N and name the sequence it makes. then double click on that sequence and everything should appear.

Timeline & Canvas Windows

With my project open in FCE 3.5.1 I am unable to display the Timeline and Canvas windows. The control bar "greys" out the choices under the "Windows" title. My options for "Custom Layout" are also not active.
How do I make these windows show up again. I can't determine what made them disappear in the first place. When opening a new project all of the windows open.
Control "U" key isn't working nor is the "standard" setting on the menu.

Motion Generator appears fine in timeline/canvas, corrupted on export (missing layers)?

I have a custom Motion Generator with a lot of layers & editable text fields that acts as an overlay to my video, so it runs through the whole project, broken up into clips whenever the text needs to change.
I recently finished my editing, scanned through the project in Final Cut (seeing no errors), and exported it. But when I look at the exported .mov, one of the generator clips didn't render properly. The text is there, but the background images aren't. This isn't even something I can toggle in my Generator, it just like... half-rendered.
The clips on either side were fine, and again, this only appears in the exported .mov. Within Final Cut Pro X, there is no way to tell something is wrong.
So I opened the project back up, found the generator clip in question, and tried disabling/reenabling it, then exporting just a tiny section to see if that fixed it. The test was rendered properly, so I went back and exported the entire project again.
This time, the original error was fixed, but in another section of the project (minutes earlier, in a different compound clip), the generator failed to render properly. This time, only half of the images loaded (rather than none), and a piece of text was rendered twice (once properly, once smaller in the middle of the screen, over someone's face).
And again... it still looks fine within FCPX itself.
Has anyone else experienced missing layers on a custom Motion Generator on export only?

Elated - I have found the problem and, more importantly, a solution.
While converting the original footage to ProRes, Compressor complained about one of the segments (the JVC camera records in around 18 minute chunks) I was trying to import. Sure enough there were some visual glitches on playback but FCP never seemed to care, but Compressor refused to convert it to ProRes.
Which got me thinking.... back to the timeline I went. Knowing which segment had caused Compressor problems, I isolated it, and cut out all footage with distortion on it. I had used b-roll footage to cover the glitches anyway, but this time I used the blade tool to remove the offending video on V1 even though it was being obscured by V2.
As if by magic, and to my great relief, the footage rendered and as we speak DVD Studio Pro has just spat out my first burn of the DVD (mind you it did take close to 6 hours to encode the footage to MPEG2!)
So there you go folks, corrupt video footage, even though it isn't playing was enough to halt my export and suck two days from my life. Lesson learned.

Lost timeline content !

I am working on my first project - everything had been imported or captures in Project Panel. I had content in the Timeline (dragged there) until my last session.
Today, the Timeline did'nt even show when I started Premiere. I made sure i am under Editing View, then in WIndow : I made sure ''Timeline'' was checked. Then, all I get is an empty rectangle where I cannot drag anything from the Project Pannel. It is grey shaded and states : Timeline: (no sequence).
What have I done wrong and how can I correct it ?

Lost timeline in FCPX 10.1.1

Hi, I've just purchased FCP 10.1.1 and finished and edit successfully. Even uploaded to YouTube! Great. For various reasons, to do with it being a 2010 iMac prone to frequent crashing, I decided to completely reinstall Mavericks and FCPX onto the reformatted boot drive. Now, when I reopen FCPX, I get all my clips but no timeline. There's also a small exclamation mark against the star of the event. Could someone explain this for me please?
Am I to assume that the timeline details were saved on my boot drive, when I've tried to save everything on the project drive? In which case they've gone forever...!

Thanks for your comment Russ. I did back up my boot drive files, but not those in the previous two days as I'd hardly used it. All my project files were saved to an external hard drive so I didn't think there were any FCPX files on the boot drive. However, I cannot identify the timeline file to make amnendments, and there's a small exclamation mark on the star marking the project I'm working on. I think I need to watch a few more training videos as this is my first time with the program. Phil

I've lost my canvas and timeline (careless of me, I know)! Have spent two days creating my DVD and now can't find where they've gone. In the 'window' tab canvas and timeline are greyed out. Please, please, please help........

Doh.... Having re-read older posts I now understand what 'sequence' means. It's back. Sorry all!!
