Lost unknown item from Finder sidebar

Hi,
I just accidentally deleted an item from the Finder sidebar, under the "Devices" section. I don't know what it was but I think it may be important. Is there any way to find out?
Thanks,
Bruce

Hi.
Don't fret too much about it.  The Finder Sidebar is just one way to access items on your Mac.  Items can be added and removed from the sidebar all day, but they still reside on your hard drive.
To see how it works in 10.8 (not sure about 10.6)  select an item, a file on your desktop for example and press ⌘T. The item should now display on the sidebar.
To remove a sidebar item, press ⌘ while you drag the item from the sidebar and it will disappear in a puff of smoke.
Fun, huh?
I hope this is helpful.
EDIT - See this Apple link.

  • Removing items from Finder sidebar

I have folders and documents in finder sidebar, which I cannot remove. They do not disappear in a puff of smoke. They just zap back to where they were. This includes a now empty folder. Any thoughts?

If you have installed Developer Tools on your Mac then you can delete individual aliases in the Finder sidebar, using Property List Editor, which you'll find in Developer > Applications > Utilities.
In your Home folder go to User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Control-right click and choose Open With > Property List Editor.
Scroll down to "useritems" and click the grey arrow next to it to reveal contents.
Click the arrow next to CustomListItems and you'll see a list of entries marked "Item" with a numeric suffix.
Click the grey arrow next to the Item whose number corresponds to the sidebar alias that you want to get rid of and you'll see the info associated with that entry, including its name, as seen in the sidebar.
If it's the right one, click again on the Item header (i.e. "Item x") and hit delete.
Quit Property List Editor and Save changes.
Quit and relaunch Finder and the Item you've just deleted will be gone from the sidebar list.
(Note: if you haven't already installed Developer Tools then you'll find it in the Optional Installs folder on your MacOS X installer DVD.)

  • Dropbox missing from finder sidebar

About one week after upgrading a macbook with a new SSD and clean install of Mountain Lion, I suddenly lost all of my finder sidebar items except the icon of my computer. I was also unable to check any options in the Finder prefs to get these to show back up. I deleted two Finder preference system plist files recommended from the support community and that got all of my Apple sidebar items working again. However, I no longer have a sidebar item for dropbox and cannot figure out how to get it back. Am I going to have to just uninstall dropbox and reinstall it? Quite the PIA.

nevermind, just dragged the silly folder back to the sidebar and all is well again.…sorry for mindless post

  • Remove Shared option from Finder Sidebar in OSX 10.5

    Afternoon all
We are using a small number of iMac’s in our network, all of which are still using OSX 10.5 (v10.5.8). As our network is predominantly Microsoft based, we have no central control over the iMac’s, thus any configuration of them is done locally via the Workgroup Manager (WMG).
We have locked the iMac’s down using the WMG to prevent our end users from accessing certain applications etc.... However one default item that is still in place that is causing us concern is the Shared option in the Finder sidebar. If a user clicks on the Shared option, they can browse all the shared folders; and see all the devices attached to the network (Desktops, Servers etc…)
We know that you can disabled the Shared option for the current user by click on Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. However we cannot see a similar option to disable it via the WMG. We cannot seem to find either a specific plist file for the sidebar that we could edit and use for all users.
    This raises two questions:
Does the WMG for 10.5 allow you to disable items in the sidebar like the Shared option?
If it cannot, do the newer version of OSX/WMG have this functionality?
Any help/pointers would be appreciated to get this issue resolved

    Morning
Sorry for the delay in replying.
The lockdown is being performed on the root account. As it is a local account and cannot see the domain, there are no items populated in the /User/Shared folder
As for editing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file, if we could find a way of opening it so that its contents appear in a descriptive manner so that we could edited it, then that could be a possibility. However even if we could do that, how could we use that file so that every users picks these settings up everytime they login?

  • I can't remove an item from the sidebar using the standard procedure.

In fact, as opposed to all the other items in my sidebar, this one can't even be clicked on, or otherwise manipulated. It might refer to a folder I once threw out, and goes by the same name as another item in my sidebar which is associated with a current folder and works just fine. I want to trash the unresponsive item, but, well, it's  unresponsive. Command + Clicking on icon and dragging to trash doesn't work, and clicking or right clicking on the icon brings up no options. The other icons in my sidebar respond properly.

I have the same problem. Mine is a shortcut to a folder in my Dropbox. If I drag the same folder from Dropbox onto the sidebar, it creates a shortcut that IS responsive (the way it's supposed to be), but the old one remains unresponsive, and I am unable to delete it in any of the usual ways. Very frustrating.
I chalk it up to yet another example of how Lion is not only not better than Snow Leopard but actually much, much worse. I hate it.

  • Removing Item from Finder Menu

How do I remove an item from the Finder Menu? I have the clock, airport-thingy, and power info. There is also a character palette item. displayed as an american flag. How do I remove the character palette item from the menu?

    Hi
Hold down the cmd key and drag it off. This should
    work for most menubar icons.
    Matt
Thank you very much! That did the trick. There is a lot I don't know. I'm glad there are people like you out there.

  • Copy alphabetically sorted items from Finder yet pastes them UNSORTED!!!

This is weird, but if I copy some items from the Finder in list or column view (they show alphabetically sorted), they paste UNSORTED on Eudora or Word 2004, for instance. How to fix it, so that they are pasted also alphabetically sorted (A to Z)? Thanks.

Edit - Paste and match style, because if I select just Edit - Paste, then the file icons instead of the file names is what is pasted
I used the helpful hint from above "convert to flat text (shift-command-T)"

  • Accidently removed "applications" from finder sidebar

I thought it would be a cool idea to drag my applications folder from my finder sidebar into my dock for easy access. But when I tried to drag it in I actually removed it by mistake (I got the poof of smoke.) How can I get it back? I tried to edit-undo, but it won't let me. Thanks.

Nevermind I figured it out. I used spotlight and then dragged the folder back in. Thanks anyway

  • Unknown item in Finder:Shared

When I open Finder and look under "Shared", I see two items: my Time Capsule and something called "3e280e000000".
Any idea what this is? Or how I can figure it out?

Thanks - I thought of that and turned off the printer, but the device stayed in the Finder under Shared.
But just now  I shut down and re-started the computer with the printer powered down, and it disappeared from Finder:Shared.
    Mystery solved.

  • How to delete a Word doc that won't highlight from Finder sidebar

I have a Word 'doc' in the sidebar in Finder which no longer either highlights or opens (it used to). I would like to delete it. If I double tap it I get: Open Sidebar Preferences which doesn't help. I have tried Command and both command and option and, because it will not even select (i.e. highlight) I can't drag it to trash or delete it. Any ideas how to delete it? I have successfully removed other Word docs from the sidebar.

    CMD-Drag, works for me.

  • After update 5.4.1, I can no longer access TC from Finder sidebar

Time Machine can backup just fine (and it seems improved), but now when I click on the icon of my Time Capsule in the Finder sidebar, I see "connecting...", but eventually the connection times out.
Has anyone gotten this to work, or do I have to downgrade the firmware? Nice job, Apple!

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • Remove a DEAD Shared NAS from Finder Sidebar

I have a dead Shared NAS device that is stuck in my Finder Sidebar and I did everything I found online to solve the issue and have it removed and no success.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • How to remove MULTIPLE sidebar items from finder?

I accidentally dragged about 1,000 folders into my finder sidbar. Crap. I'd really like to get rid of them quickly and not have to drag them out one at a time. Any ideas? I tried trashing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist but it didn't do the trick.

Thanks Tony. This helped me figure out the problem!
I have Path Finder installed and it turns out that the Path Finder plist was also storing the sidebar items. If I just trashed the finder and sidebar plists, the Path Finder plist would automatically repopulate the items. Trashing all three plists at the same time with Path Finder closed then relaunching Finder solved the issue!
Thanks again, that was a clever trick.

  • Unknown item in finder

    hi,
i hope that this is the correct place to post this. I hace recently noticed this in the left hand pane of the finder:/Users/anthonyryan/Desktop/whatisit.tiff
I have no idea how it got there or what it is. Any ideas?
    /Users/anthonyryan/Desktop/whatisit2.tiff

The left-hand pane of the Finder is called the sidebar. In it are shortcuts to files, folders, drives, & so on -- not the actual items. To find where the actual files & folders reside, command (or right) click on the sidebar item & select "Open Enclosing Folder" from the contextual menu.
From the name, this item appears to be an image file on the desktop of user account "anthonyryan." If this is not the name of your account, it may be that of some other account on your Mac, & you may not have access privileges to its enclosing folder.
In any case, if the file's folder can't be found, you can just drag the file shortcut off the sidebar & it will be deleted.

  • Pictures/photos gone from finder sidebar

I never used and photo apps such as iPhoto or Photo Booth. I always just kept my photos organized in folders within the 'my Pictures' tab on the sidebar in FINDER. That tab just disappeared when I updated to the new OS Yosemite. I can't find any of my thousands of photos from over the years. The My Pictures tab used to be right there under Applications, Downloads, etc. Where is it?

    open the Finder Preferences:
click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, the go to the Finder menu in the main menu bar and click Preferences.
Click the "Sidebar" tab in the Preferences panel and enable "Pictures".
