Lost web site

i spent ages building my website using iWeb, and if i say so myself, i'm pretty pleased with the result;

but, i didn't do such a good job of backing it up.
the file which lives on your own computer was not backed up by time machine (my mistake) so when my computer was stolen, the only copy of that file was stolen with it.
currently the website exists, and i can copy individual text or pictures from it, but re-building the whole thing in iWeb will take ages. Since it's my site, and i know the log-ins passwords etc on .mac, is there not a file that i can access from the .mac / somewhere on the web that will allow me to edit it?

Yes, there are html files on .mac that you can edit. You just can't do it with iWeb. You can edit them by hand with a free text editing program like TextWrangler. It can be confusing if you don't know much about code (as I don't), but everything is there. the path is ( at least for me): your iDisk/Web/Sites/Site folder.
There you will find an html file for each page and a folder for each page containing css files and your images. If you attempt this I suggest you duplicate a page and it's folder and experiment on that so your existing pages remain functioning properly. As you make changes to your html file hit save inTextWrangler, and you can immediately see your changes in a browser. Rename the duplicated html file. ( for example change the duped "Welcome" file to "Welcome1" ) Then you can immediately see what affect your changes are having on the published site. If you are successful in making the changes you want then rename the file back to the original name. (Welcome)
At the same time you can recreate the site in iWeb, just don't publish to your .mobileme server until you are completely finished otherwise it will overwrite all your existing published files. You can publish to a folder on your computer to see what your new work looks like.
I keep my "domain file" in Dropbox. ( very easy to use) This does two things, it allows me to edit my site from multiple computers and it also keeps a backup on the Dropbox.com server. I can backup from their server if I ever lost the computers or the files. Dropbox is free for 2GB or less storage.
Sorry to here about the theft, I can't imagine what that would be like.

By downloading your files from your website to your computer,

copying them from the server's hard drive (where the world

You could spend 12 months editing the files locally. Anyone
visiting your
website (i.e. accessing the old files on the server) will

viewable by
anyone but they'll be the old files.
When you've finished editing locally on your computer at
home/work/laptop,
you then upload your freshly edited files. That's called
updating your
website.
Next time someone views the site, they see the freshly edited
files because
the freshly edited ones (which you just uploaded from your
local computer)
overwrote the old ones on the server.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Full Screen mode with all toolbars hidden.
* Press F11 to toggle full screen mode (Firefox/File > Full Screen)
If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key, that should make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"

Lost web site alighnment

Some how when working on my site in DW I lost allighnment for the intire site. I looked at my wrapper div and it still shows top 0 right auto left auto and bottom 0. What could I have done and what do I do to fix it. Also it alighns to the right now. I would post the site but I would have to overwrite the main site and I don't have a backup at the moment.

You could give your document a different name like junk.html and upload it.
Not being able to see the code in situ makes it hard to see what you have done. I have a faint suspicion that you may have got your auto's and zero's round the wrong way. I think of it as TRouBLe (top right bottom left).
You could also do with margin: auto;

By default iWeb keeps its data in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file named Domain. Without this file you cannot proceed (other than by recreating the site from scratch using the published version as a reference) so you need to locate it on the original disk.
To confuse matters, Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and Mountain Lion to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice.

I have three home tabs and on some occasions if I open one of them and start to browse it I can't return to the top page. It doesn't always happen and it can happen on any of them. It made using apps impossible and the only way to correct the situation is to hit the home key and close the incorrect tabs

It's also possible your session history file is not updating correctly, because you should not be thrown back to an earlier state in a tab.
By default, Firefox updates the sessionstore.js file every 15 seconds with any changes. But occasionally Firefox may stop updating the file or may find that the file is locked and start creating a different sessionstore file (which is never restored and just sites orphaned in your profile folder).
Could you take a look?
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button.

Web sites lost when I reinstalled sofware

I had 2 web sites that I designed using iWeb.
I had to replace my hard drive and reinstall sofware.
Now I lost my web sites, when I start iWeb the left window where my 2 web sites used to appear is empty.
I noticed that I have the files that belong to 1 of my web sites is in the folder marked Sites in a back-up, when I copied these files to the Sites folder of the newly reinstalled software, it still does not appear on the left window of iWeb. It is still as if I am using iWeb for the very first time.
How can I recover my 2 web site files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

The file you need to use with iWeb for managing your websites is named Domain.sites or Domain.sites2 depending on the version of iWeb your using, 2 or 3. They would be located in your Home/Library/Applications Support/iWeb folder.
If you didn't have a backup of your drive before it crashed and was replaced you won't be able to recover them and will have to rebuild your sites from scratch.
If you do have to rebuild from scratch this would be the time to switch to a supported, up to date web site application as iWeb has been unsupported/dead for about 2 years now.
If you search the iWeb forum for "iWeb replacement" or "iWeb alternate" you'll find many topics discussing them. One that many have gravitated to is EverWeb which is very iWeb like in its user interface and drag and drop capabilities. However, it is much more advanced that iWeb was.

When downloading latest verison, I lost the home page. I cain't go back home when on another web site

I need the tool bar that has the little house(home page) so I can go to web sites and return to foxfire. I tried to restore my computer to an earlier date which failed. The down load didn't take , I think my system is getting to old!I use fire fox a lot and would really like to get my home page back working. Thank you

Lost access to many, but not all web sites after last update: what to do?

On a Macbook pro, connecting via Orange broadband in the UK. suddenly only a few web sites could be accessed, even though email and skype worked fine.
I thought it was a MTU problem, so first tested with the info at this page:

following those instructions, setting the MTU to 1458 which would appear to be the UK recommended value, and also setting the wireless router to that value made it work!
Great, I thought. But then, wanting a permanent fix, I followed these instructions:

and checked the MTU after reboot! yes, it was still 1458.
But the problem had come back. I can only access google and some few other sites, not www.hp.com for example.
So I am at a loss.
I saw that at least one other person has complained about this problem on these forums...

Not quite sure what you mean here;
a) The DNS Lookup failed
b) The URL returns a blank page
Trace to www.hp.com using /Utilities/Network Utility/Trace tab
Does the URL resolve to an IP number OK, does the trace complete or fail ?

How can I get version 3 of Firefox. One web site that I need to use monthly hasn't upgraded their software & it doesn't work on Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer

Up until two months ago I was able to access this one web site (www.melaleuca.com). It is a site that I order from monthly. When I type the address in I get a screen saying "the connection was reset while the page was loading". I called their tech support & of course it's never their fault, it must be my computer! NOT! I go on financial trading and banking web sites that are super crypted, so it's not my computer. The tech support said that their web site only works with Firefox 3.0. I told them that was dumb! My other theory is that one of those insidious "upgrades" that Microsoft is always doing changed something, but they're never going to admit to it. I can access the web site on my iPhone, but that is tedious. Help!

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).

Adding an e-Commerce template to existing BC online web site?

Has anyone out there started with a Muse design, and after completeing it, then did add an ecommerce template?
There are many ways to get to the mountian... I don't see a path yet.
Conern is for menu integration with the existing client content/web site (created in Muse) and eCommerce Template.
Is this integration possible? Key question.
If so though what interface: BC, Muse, Dreamweaver, Other?
In other words:
Q: How does one join an active client muse site to a BC eComerce Template: what is the best process GIVEN initial client design is in MUSE?

It appears to me that going from a Muse Content created site on BC, to having that same BC site augmented with e-commerce, needs to be done in the BC on line interface versus Dreamweaver or Muse.

Editing a Web site SWF file

Funky, allow me to try again. right words are difficult for
me come by but I try.
I have a Web site that uses a 260K Swf file for presentation.
My original designer is no longer available.
I am trying to make changes to update some of the info on the
site. I have been able to update jpeg images
in photo gallery which is an external xml file to and opened
by the swf file. additionally I have updated some of the
images within the "master" swf file using Eltima decompiler
software.
I am now try to update some of the Static Text files within
the "master" swf file.
I am using a MAC with the Eltima Decompiler and CS3 Flash.
This is my first attempt to update/edit
Static text.
If you could quide me toward a correct course, I would
appreciate it.
I open the "master" swf in eltima and extract only "text" I
am not doing anything with images, buttons etc.
I convert that ouput into Fla. A "master"_conv_fla file is
created along with a folder called text that has multiple
Static Text xx.swf file within. The fla file opens in adobe
but doesnt contain the file I want to update.
using Eltima I open the Static text 53.swf, perform an
extract and then convert that to a Static text 53_conv.fla file
that opens in adobe.
Here I am lost. I have used trial and error to get a
response. I might mention that the original designer used Adobe 6.
With the Static text 53_conv.fla file open in adobe I seem to only
be able to make changes when I click on
Edit Symbols. I make changes and do a Save As so that Adobe 8
is used. I assume Adobe 9 might not allow my file to function.
After saving I Export the result back to my computers texts
file. That file then appears as Static text 3.swf.
instead of Static text 53.swf
It has the results I want but I don't know how the make the
changes take in the Static text 53.swf file.
I am not even sure the steps I have taken above are even
correct. It was all I could do to get any result.

I'm a relatively new convert to a Mac and I have to say that this is the first time I have been disappointed by my choice.
I have quite a few webs that I maintained with FrontPage and now I will have to drop them because I can't take the time to re-do each page within the sites just because I can't import the html coding into iWeb.
It would be nice if the authors could make iWeb a bit more friendly in that regard. Even if only the basic layout, text, images and/or image holders could be imported, that would help.

Using iWeb '09 when web site was built in iWeb'08

I built my web site on iWeb '08 and made frequent changes using Yummy. Last month I upgraded to iWeb '09 and attempted to change the Newsletter page (one of the five pages). The content of the Newsletter page upgraded but I lost my navigation ability at the top of the page. All the other pages have the ability to navigate between each other, but all I have on the Newsletter page is a black dot in the left corner.

I'm afraid to upgrade the rest of the pages for fear of losing the navigation ability for the whole site. Can anyone assist me here?

This usually means you haven't uploaded the feed.xml file. In your case it's probably because the one on the server needs to be updated.
To reassure yourself that everything will be OK, publish your entire site to a local folder and launch it in the browser direct from your hard disk by double clicking the index.html file.
If all is well, republish the whole site and the new feed.xml should sort out the navigation issue.

I would agree that it helps the newcomer to FTP to have a hosting service whose tech support understand the unique structure of iWeb created sites. I have lost count of the number of users who have asked me to sort out problems created by tech support employed by numerous hosting services - including the mighty GoDaddy.
A lot of tech support people don't seem to bother to look at the form and function of the iWeb index.html files and advise users that they have to rename their home page to "index". While this holds true for most websites, it certainly doesn't apply to iWeb.
Its not "simply the html and css files". How many users come unstuck when they forget about the feed.xml?
People who hand out advice in this forum about uploading files via "Cyberduck" tend to miss out the part about the importance of maintaining the site structure by uploading the whole folder created by iWeb plus the external index.html.
They also may not have been around back when I first announced that I uploaded the contents of the iWeb folder to get rid of the site name in the URL. I was shot down in flames by the iWeb "experts" and told that this was impossible - even although I was obviously doing it!
Although this method of uploading the files has become accepted practice in the iWeb community I wouldn't recommend it to those who are new to FTP unless they have help from a tech support person who actually understands the problems involved and can point out the downside. Those who claim that it is "simple" and "easy" have obviously forgotten the first time that they tried it!
A lot of the people who come to this forum for help with FTP end up in a complete mess due to the conflicting and inadequate advice they get due to the fact that the "adviser" hasn't a clue about the hosting account structure and can't view the actual files. In many cases, I have had to go into the users hosting account and sort out the mess created by bad advice and ignorance. This should really be done by the hosting service's tech support but, in many cases, they helped create the problem in the first place.
The mere fact that an iWeb user has to come to this forum for help with FTP seems to suggest that their hosting service has inferior tech support.
