(Lots) Of Apps Crashing
After doing a CLEAN install (wiped iMac hard drive, install 10.6 and then reinstalled my apps) I have also like some other been experiencing lots of crashes. The first one I noticed was with Mail, that when you would move you mouse to click send after composting a message, the program would just disappear. It also happened if you attached an image to a message. Deleting my MobileMe account seemed to fix that problem.
However, other applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, Pages, SuperDuper and others) will exhibit the same problem of crashing, all with no warning, just poof. It happens at no particular time or action. I also installed Snow Leopard on 2 other machines exactly the same way, an iMac, a PowerBook and since they are all running basically the same apps, the other two machines are trouble free except the one iMac.
Only thing different on the one that is having app crashing is that I set up my MobileMe account when installing the operating system. I went into System Prefs and logged out and so far, it seems that the crashing has stopped. I need a day or so of moderate to heavy use to be sure, but if you are having problems with apps crashing try deleting/logging out of MobileMe and see if that may help.

Hello Robert:
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been struggling for over a week with Illustrator and Photoshop crashes since installing SL. After combing the message boards at various times, I came across your post. Though I have never opened a MobileMe account, I thought I'd check it out. When I clicked on the MobileMe icon, I saw that it was trying to sign on to an account. I clicked Sign Out and then went straight to Illustrator CS3 and opened a file I was unable to previously. I was then able to edit it, save it, and print it! I don't know why MobileMe was trying to sign on to an account, I've never even gone into it to check it out. I'm so grateful to you for posting your experience. Thank you again!
Best wishes,
Patti

Maybe (okay, almost certainly) this is the break-in period, but a lot of the apps on the iPad sure do crash.
Most recently, USA Today app crashed and now will not start up. Kindle app, Kobo, Zinio, and a few others have all crashed on my iPad.I'm going to guess that this is probably because a lot of the developers didn't have access to an actual iPad to test their app on, but were relying on the simulator for testing. Hopefully, it's not something actually wrong with the iPad. I guess we'll have to wait and see if those apps get updates very soon.

10.8.5 Update - Finder and Lots of apps crash
Hi All -
I've been anxiously awaiting for the screensaver fixes to be resolved that were caused in recent updates, so I installed 10.8.5 which apparently came out today and my 2013 iMac now is constantly telling me that apps are quitting unexpectedly. This happens with Finder, Sparrow, Adium, all fail to start. Worse for Finder b/c OS X is trying to restart it. Some apps of mine appear to work but are limited (like Sublime Text 2 will open but I can't save a file). IntelliJ started, Chrome worked but its impossible to use since the unexpectedly quit window constantly keeps focus.
No change with booting into Safe Mode.
I had to save this error log via terminal in order to get anything.
How can I revert this back to 10.8.4?

10.8.5 runs as smooth or even smoother than 10.8.4 on my Mac mini. Sure, not an iMac, and none of the issues you report.
Sublime Text 2 Build 2221 appears to launch, open and save files quicker than on 10.8.4.
Your other third-party apps may require developer updates -- or not. Even IntelliJ Ideas 12.1.4 still has a JDK 6 installation requirement. Recommend the appropriate support community for IntelliJ.
Also recommend that you run Disk Utility and verify/repair permissions. I found some stuff post-install that needed that.
Update: Just saw your latest post. Good solve. -
Seeing a lot more app crashes since upgrading t4.2.1?
I have been seeing a lot more apps just quit without explanation since the upgrade. Interestingly enough, most of them are apps that I acquired after upgrading iOS and they are supposedly tested and compatible with 4.2.1. Anyone else having this problem?
Nope . . .

Lots of apps crashing when opened
Since upgrading from an iphone 4 to an iphone 5 last year, various apps that worked before no long work, i used the settings and profile for my 4 and transferred to the 5 so some of the apps installed automatically, and they did not work, and some apps that i download now do not either.
all apps that are effected, crash as soon as opened and returns to the phone menu, without fail. the apps never load.
This has been going on since i got the phone last year. i've tried resetting the settings and turning of the phone and holding both buttons as i have seen resolving issues for other people like this, but this hasn't worked for me. I've updated the software a couple of times as they have come out but it remains an issue.
any advice that can be offered to resolve this is appreciated.1. Double tap Home buttons and delete all the apps from multitask-list.
2. Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: > Sign out.
3. Do a Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data
4. Sign back in. -
Lots of apps crashing at startup - only on ONE account
Hi,
i've got a serious probleme that seems to be caused by some corrupted preferences or settings in my "Library" Folder.
Mail, Pages, and some other non-apple softwares won't start -better said :icon bouncing, app loading, app launched for 1/4 sec and then quit.
This is very critical since I can't access my work files from this account... I need to copy them into another one, where the SAME apps DO WORK perfectly !! I tried to delete the prefs (com.apple.**), i also tried to replace the library folder with my last week's backup, but it didn't solve anything.
The only way to get my apps working was to DELETE the library folder... thus losing all my precious setting
Any way to get me out of this ?
Thx in advance
FloIf it truly is corrupt preferences then you don't really have much option but to delete the corrupt files and start afresh (or copy back on from your backup). Since these seem to work from another account that would strongly suggest it is corrupt preferences files, though it is suspicious that they are suddenly all corrupt.
I would also recommend at least trying to repair permissions, and maybe just verifying your drive to make sure something else isn't happening.:
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. Then repair the permissions on your computer. You can also repair permissions from DU on your main drive while booted, but to properly verify and repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive. A limited repair is also performed as part of a Safe Mode boot.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."

Had a Kernel Panic, now I've lots of apps crashing.
A couple of days ago I had a Kernel Panic when startying Pro Tools. The machine hasnt quite recovered since - Safari will start and give me a page and then crash the instant anything is asked of it. The Help Viewer, Sherlock and System Prefs have also done this though nothing like as much as Safari has.
I've bits of logs but I don't believe I have the one with the panic on after trying to lok through things myself. Am I best to get hold of a copy of all available logs and post them here and if need be, recreate the Panic? Its was upon starting Pro Tools that it happened but I'd run everything such as the repair pre-binding script.
Heres what I have;

I know thats not the Panic log but its all I've managed to send to myself so far (doing this of a works PC).
I've had Pro Tools working on this machine for a while but its only recently that this has happened. Last time led to an Erase and Install and I'd rather not go down that line again if it can be fixed. I've already done and archive and install to no effect and tried various hints of getting Safari going such as deleting the history.plist and so on.
As always any help will be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Andy
Message was edited by: FordonianHiya! Right, I've put Firefox on and tested it - stable as can be, not a problem with it.
I see System Profiler saying its writing the Safari crashes to a log with the corresponding name but can't find it in the logs. I can only find Kextcrash.log :s
Heres what I have of the logs I could just get my hands on before;

@~Bee -Yep it was a full Panic with the grey lines of doom - I'm used to PT on occasion having caused them before but its running fine now with all kinds of Plug-In intensive sessions going on and I've not had any trouble since re-installing it a couple of nights back. -
Why do my apps crash a lot in ios5 on my iPad?
A lot off apps seem to have trouble running stable On my 1st gen iPad. Especially Safari seems to endure a lot of them. But also itunes U, comic book lover etc have their share of troubles. It does not seem related to iCloud as i saw mentioned because it was happening before, during iCloud and after turningit off again.
It gets kind of annoying now. :/
Also my iPad is really getting slow it seems. Btw clean install, not many apps installed and no history from a previous backup.Mark, it is slowing down and crashing because you have too much stuff going on. The ios is supposed to handle that, but sometimes it just doesn't. Comic books, heavy net use, and graphic intensive stuff are culprits.
But you can minimize the issue by shutting down apps all the way, and from time to time, rebooting the machine. This sort of cleans it out.
To fully shut down an app, double tap the home key to get the taks bar. Touch and hold any of the task bar icons until they jiggle, the tough the minus sign to fully close them. Then do the reboot by holding the home and sleep button until the apple logo appears. Ignore the red slider.
If you get in the habit of closing of the task bar apps fairly regularly you should find that you will not have the same degree of issues, and will not need to reboot very often. -
Mac Pro wont software update and a lot of apps keep freezing/crashing/not responding
Mac Pro wont software update and a lot of apps keep freezing/crashing/not responding Im on OSX Lion and i have a Mac Pro 1.1 please help
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
IOS 8 Pages app crashes a lot, dictation VERY bad now. Any solutions?
With the upgrade to iOS 8 on my iPad Mini, the current version of the Pages app crashes quite frequently and this isn't solved by a hard reboot. Dictation is extraordinarily bad and crashes more than the app itself does.
My primary hope is that Apple will see this post (and others like it) and get around to fixing the app so I don't have to pay $19 for a tech support fee to register my complaint about bugginess, just to have them tell me that, 'there's nothing they can do until the app gets updated, but thanks for the $19 bucks.' Regrettably when a Pages app update a year or two ago caused the user to have to hit the delete key constantly to remove automatic double-spacing, an Apple support rep told me that was how it is supposed to work. (Later it was repaired.)
My question to which I expect no actual answer is, Can this be repaired with the current version of iOS and Pages?
My second question is, What are the best, most reliable apps for creating RTF files on an iPad which don't have the performance problems of Apple's own Pages app?James-
Thanks for the solid reply! You have been helpful and I understand why you have answered my points as you have. Here's a little more info so my original questions might make more sense and you can see why I have been helped but I still have issues.
I had done the iPad reset numerous times. It doesn't really do anything to change the behavior of the Pages app. Some documents just seem to crash repeatedly. And this happens without regard as to whether or not I'm trying to use dictation at the time.
Deleting and reinstalling the app could be a problem if what I have read about others using Pages in iOS 8 is accurate. I have read that there is a problem with the Pages files being properly backed up to the cloud. I can't afford to lose documents and I'd hate to have a delete and reinstall add a new level of problems.
While my problems may not be widespread among your colleagues, I have read about them on several blogs and here in the Apple community, though I don't spend a lot of time here. So, maybe not widespread, but I don't think "rare" either.
My problem with dictation crashing does seem to be widespread enough that I found several threads about it (after this post) and found that the workaround is to press the Return key prior to each dictation, then just go back and clean up all the unnecessary returns. This is working for now, but it's tedious.
As for the RTF question, my workflow is to type up scripts on my iPad and share (via email) with others as Word or RTF files. The reason for my question was/is to solicit input from others here regarding their favorite RTF capable apps. While I can certainly find many of these apps myself, using the iTunes store search, suggestions from happy users is generally a good place to start. If there are no suggestions, I'll certainly download and try a number of them myself.
Thanks again for your role in this community and reaching out to offer assistance to someone you've never met. -
Default iOS reminder app: Cannot add more than one reminder, cannot add new list, after updating to iOS 7.1. The app crashes frequently on editing or just by pressing return..
Hello Kyem22,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with the Reminders app quitting unexpectedly.
The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching all the applications on your iPad:
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
You can find the full article here:
iOS: Force an app to close
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting all the apps, I recommend restarting your iPad and then resetting if it's still not working:
Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article here:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPad. The Reminders app is not something that can individually be reinstalled, but backing up your iPhone and restoring the iOS software will reinstall the application:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Best,

Does any of you using iPhone 4 with iOS 5 installed and have the Message app crash daily? It crashes (not always) at the time I pick up a conversation and start typing Chinese using Pinyin input method. I think there is bug but not sure. I am just wondering how many of you out there having the same device and problem as I do and please feel free to leave a feedback.
Chinese handwriting input (simplified or traditional) crashes all over the places with multiple apps. The respones of displaying the list of selected words after the handwriting input is slower than 4.x but the main problem is that it causes the apps to crash when selecting some specific words, this makes my iPhone4 become useless. Pls fix it quick.
I am using iPhone4 with iOS5 (9A334). -

IPhone 6 apps crashing - mapkit bug?
Hey everyone, so I have an iPhone 6, 64GB. I've been having app crashing issues with specific apps, and apple it not of much help at all. I think I may have narrowed down the problem, but wondering if anyone else is having the same issue? So far, upon search the only other major crashing issues I've seen are with 128GB iphone 6+, and that's not me. Here's a rundown of what I've experienced:
9/17/14
- BRAND NEW iPhone 6, yay, restored from a backup of my iphone 5, and everything was working perfectly, no problems.
9/26/14
- That evening while traveling, random apps started crashing.
- Facebook, Redfin, Maps, sometimes Calendar/Safari/Email, sometimes Fitbit, sometimes Myfitnesspal.
- By crashing, I mean that they close abruptly with no warning. Sometimes they will actually load initially, but then after a few actions or minutes of use, they crash (facebook, email/safari/calendar). Some apps just NEVER load (Maps, Redfin), they begin to launch and then immediately close. They appear to close, but when you double-click the home button to see which apps are running, there they sit in all their glory, but you can't actually use them: bringing them back to the front of open apps just makes them appear to "crash" again. I guess it's technically more of a display error, in that the app is technically running, but you can't see it and therefore use it.
*Side note - Coincidence this was the day the fatal/buggy iOS 8.0.1 update was released? Although I hadn't installed it yet...but weird nonetheless.
9/27/14
- Installed 8.0.1 over wi-fi (traveling and no computer), but didn't fix the crashing problem.
10/27/14
- Still been crashing all this time, life without maps and facebook is hard.
- Attempted to install 8.1 and had horrific errors. Had to wipe everything and set up as new phone, install the 8.1 update, and then restore from my last iphone 5 backup.
- App crashing has ceased, and maps and all other apps are working normally. Not happy I've lost the past 45 days of history, but at least the phone is working again and I have *most* of my stuff.
12/22/14
- Haven't had a problem since the last fix in October. Once again while traveling and literally on the plane out of town (I think maybe I'm cursed?), same crashing issues start.
- It began with Facebook, then I immediately checked maps, calendar, safari etc etc and they're all broken again. In case you didn't know, traveling in a city that you don't know without maps at your fingertips, and facebook to post your exciting updates, is not fun. Begrudgingly gritted my teeth and dealt with it until I could get home from travels and try to fix it.
1/12/15
- So I've been paying attention to this crashing thing the last few weeks and taking notes, trying to figure it out, because I actually want Apple to fix this, but I can't take it anymore.
- Started out by turning on iCloud Photo Library beta to make sure all photos/vids are stored, then also did an iCloud backup and a full iTunes backup. Also took screenshots of screen layout and other important settings.
- Called Apple Support and they (of course) told me I need to update to 8.1.2 (dreading this!), and then wipe everything, setup as a new phone, and see if it's still having the problem; then restore from this mornings backup and see if that fixes it.
- I first wiped the phone, just in case the glitch/bug is what caused my last update attempt to go awry. Then setup as new phone, then updated software, then restored from this mornings backup. Seems to be working again, and now the crashing is not happening. BUT - we all know it will start happening again at some time in the future, when the stars align or some random thing triggers that glitch that starts this whole nightmare.
WHAT I'VE GATHERED FROM THIS:
1) Apple support techs are very quick to assume it's probably a corrupt backup file, and that the only way to permanently fix it is to setup as new phone and ditch the old data. Well I'm sorry, but that's just not acceptable to me. For one, every time I've restored from a backup, it appears to fix the issue. That leads me to believe there is a bug that isn't initially a problem until something triggers it. Two, I do not pay premium $ to have an iphone so that I can be told "sorry, you just have a dud backup file, if you want your phone to work properly you need to lose all your history"...I buy the iphone because of it's ease of use, and being able to seamlessly upgrade devices. At that price point, the phone better work flawlessly, and if there's a problem they need to actually fix the problem. I didn't write the code, and I certainly didn't go into my backup and change the code. And three, I have way too much data to lose in apps, messages etc - losing that alone would be worse than dealing with this dumb glitch.
2) After looking at the Diagnostic Crash Logs, all these app crashes have something to do with the Mapkit code, and sometimes also a Vectorkit code which I'm assuming is how the phone renders the map data and displays it. I'm not a developer or coder, I don't speak that language, but I can clearly see the event is EXC_CRASH and the thread each log points to has SOMETHING to do with MapKit and sometimes Vectorkit. Being that all these apps do use apple's native maps app to display or lookup map data - it's clear to me that this seems to be the issue. In researching further, I came across this post from a developer who mentions something about it: http://thecodist.com/article/our_ios_app_crash_rate :
"1/3 of the crashes are a particular one in MapKit where Apple's tile loading code in VectorKit appears to try to update a map which has already been deallocated. I reported it in Radar but so far no idea if they are going to fix it. It appears that when a map tile load isn't delivered fast enough it can complete after the app has already removed the map view."
I'd like for them to actually fix this!Lol what is the point of a Support Community blog if all anyone is going to tell anyone is restart/wipe their device? That's garbage.
@socialprincess1, I have THIS EXACT PROBLEM with my phone. I travel (specifically air travel) and suddenly, like clock work as we push back from the gate, all apps that utilize mapkit crash. I've reproduced this problem 4 times in the last month (I've done a lot of air travel). Facebook, Apple Maps, Weather, Weather Underground, Lyft, etc. ALL CRASH.
Apps that use the Google Maps engine, Google Maps, Uber, etc. all work fine....how ironic.
The only thing that stops the crashing is restoring the device. Now, you can backup your device while its crashing and restore from that backup and your device will start working fine again...but this doesn't fix the underlying problem that this "mapkit bug" will arise again.
My only guess at this point in the debug process is it *may* have something to do with the on-board wifi (gogo-inflight, etc.), as it is the only thing that is unique to air travel. Maybe there's a cert that its trying to install or maybe even the Fly Delta app is doing something funky with location services/mapkit. At this point I really have no idea.
I've also noticed that the location services icon (black compass mark) is on CONSTANTLY now.
I have a 128GB iPhone 6 that I restored from my iPhone 5 backup upon receiving as well. -
Does anyone else have battery life problems with the iOS6 update? Some of my other apps crash constantly, bringing my reading or workflow back to the home screen. The new map App is a disaster! Is there an online petition to have Apple bring back the Google map app? It is like asking a blind man for driections! Addresses, postal codes, locations, area codes and phone numbers in the Vancouver BC area are consistently wrong! AUUUUUGGGHHHHHHH!
As someone who spends a lot of time writing reviews (for vidya gaems ;P) I enjoyed your review. I am also looking at getting a new phone soon (I am saving up to buy out on refresh). I was considering th next iPhone but from reading your review I may consider this device instead. What I need to know is this. When the phone is in a phone holder which you have in a car for example does the screen get pressed at the sides? I don't wan't to open up Waze put my phone in a holder and it get cancelled out by what it thinks is a button press. Also, is the screen goign to be scratched easy? I am guessing there is no decent screen guards yet. I did buy some screen protection liquid that was recommended on these forums and my lumia still got scratched by about an inch or so.
