Lots of audio pops when recording from mixer

I'm using FCP 5.1.4 on a mac laptop (don't know what type it is, but think it's somewhat recent). I'm recording a stage play's audio.
Here's my audio flow:
Mixer's 1/4" headphone jack -> 1/4" Stereo audio cable -> 1/8" stereo adapter at other end (have also tried 1/8" mono) -> Laptop's microphone port (no other input audio port available)
I can get a good signal, but there's constant audio pops/clicks happening at a steady rate. I remember reading somewhere else that problems can arise when recording directly from a mixer due to the high signal strength coming from it. Any ideas why this is happening? How do I fix this?

What is a mic bus level output?
Most better mixers have direct bus ins and outs. Just like plugging in a mic.
Laptop doesn't have a line in port
Get a different computer if you're expecting to enjoy doing audio capture.
If i used the RCA or XLR output jacks, would the popping still occur?
Irrelevant, it's all about signal type, resistance, milliamperes, millivolts and milliwatts. Not connectors. You can put an XLR on your power supply and it wouldn't change the voltage.
I think my workplace may have a few USB audio things lying around. Like it has 2 XLR input ports, then connects to computer through USB. Do you know if they tend to need certain software, or if they're plug and play?< </div>
Unknown from here. this is not a FCP question.

  • Audio Mismatch When Recording from Camcorder

I am recording video from my Panasonic GS-180 camcorder using Quicktime Pro over a firewire cable, and the sound always gets off, eventually by more than 10 seconds. I have set the quality to "Device Native."
    Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Quicktime 7.1.3

I doubt it will help, but you might try to do a fresh save on the video after fixing "timecode breaks" in the free MPEGStream app. Very nice application, and freely provided by an Italian video concern. It can also do batch mode, though maybe not for timecode break saves.
Ironic that video editing is made far more complete by adding this software to the more modest Mac arsenal.

  • Pops When Recording

I am getting intermittent static pops when recording live audio. I know that it's not clipping, because I am setting the peaks below zero and I get no warning message when the recording is done. I thought that maybe it might be my mic pre-amp/line-in (Behringer Tube Ultragain and/or Behringer Pre-Q), but the peak light on the mic-trim is at no time lighting up, so I really have no clue what the problem could be. I need some help here, please?

About 2 months ago, I was getting random clicks and pops embedded in my audio, after 2 tears with my current system working flawlessly.
I had a lot of trouble shooting to do, but eventually I came to notice that in my Lynx control panel, one of the two places where you select the clock wasn't allowing me to change it. It was "stuck" on Internal, and although I thought that was the proper setting, I found it odd that I couldn't select it, and change it.
After more digging around, I found that a new update to my Lynx driver was available, so I downloaded it, and installed it. Not only was I then able to access that parameter, but the clicks and pops went away immediately.
That's my long winded way of saying, it could be a corrupt driver, or something that isn't so obvious. Only time and experimentation will reveal what's going on.
Can you take a screen picture of one of these pops, when zoomed into the sample editor? I've gotten pretty good at recognizing digital clock spikes, so I might be able to confirm if that's what it is (or isn't).

  • Any way to boost audio input when recording?

Hi; I have been recording speech interviews with Audio-Technica mics on a ProTools set-up and they've sounded great.
I've recently tried recording using the mics in Garageband using a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB, but the audio levels are always too low unless the subject is an inch or two from the mic, which isn't the best way to get quality audio.
Is there any way to boost the audio input when recording in GB or any other tricks people know of?
    thx, Charlie

I'm actually having the same problem, except I'm recording straight into the computer (no interface).
I tried using an MBox, but the computer won't even recognize it...(if anyone's got suggestions for why that is, I'll gladly take them...).
My main question is the same as Charles's, however - how come the input level is so soft when recording using the "Built-In Input" (where I can use a mic, and have mobility) as opposed to the "Built-In Microphone"?

  • My apple Tv has audio problems when streaming from my NAS server.

My Apple TV has audio problems when streaming from my NAS server or computer and even internet. I can hear the click sound it makes when you click on the icons, but when the movie starts there is no audio. This even happens when using XBMC. I have HMDI directly to my TV suing Apple TV 2. I have tried resetting, turning off both TV and Apple TV, and changing the HDMI cable. It is driving me nuts.

  • Recording from Mixer to 13" Macbook Pro

    Hey everybody,
First let me be frank, I don't know much about audio equipment/mixers etc., but I do know some. Anyway, I do a lot of remote high school play-by-play broadcasts using four separte external mics that run from my Yamaha MG102c mixer, back into my 13" Macbook Pro. The problem I seem to be having is figuring out how to get my computer to recognize the external source (Mixer), so that when I go to record my broadcast for future listening, I can just use garageband. Now, I know they make USB/Firewire mixers, but i had to do this on a budget. The cord I have that I thought would connect the mixer back to my mac is just a basic right and left 1/4" plug to 1/8" adapter that runs to the single headphone jack in my computer. I don't know if I am not using the correct line channels to get the audio that is coming from the mix back, but for some reason I continue to have trouble. Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

    MBP = Mac Book Pro.
Here is what I would do:
    1) Verify that there is indeed audio coming out of your adaptor cable. You can do this by plugging that cable into some other audio device, to confirm that it is working. Also verify that you are coming out of the mixer a line or tape level.
    2) Once you have verified that the mixer/cable is correct, plug it into the one audio jack on the 13" Mac Book that doubles as a line in and headphone output jack.
    3) Launch Garage Band, and go to the menu Garage Band > Preferences. When the preferences open, click on the tab for Audio/Midi.
    4) Set your Audio Input to Built-In Line Input.
You should be good to go.

  • Audio popping when battery run low. Help !!

    Hi there,
I have a macbook pro 13" late 2011 with OSX Lion, 8 Gb Ram and 2,4 Ghz i5 cpu.
    I'm a producer/composer so I use mt mac a lot for audio.
My problem is that whatever I'm doing, if I'm using ableton or maschine or logic, when battery is low and the low battery message appears on the screen,
my cpu meter goes very high (red) and it's impossible keep on working: audio starts popping and running slow so much that is impossible even understand what track is playing.
So when I start to charge it it comes back and starts working properly.
I don't understand why it happends only when the battery low message on the screen appears.
It happends even if I use vlc playing an mp3.
    Any help please ???

  • Problem when recording from the AUX phono output using creative x-fi elite

Hello everyone?Hopefully someone will be able to help me out here, as I've tried everything, however nothing seems to work. I am using the x-fi elite pro on a windows vista ultimate PC. When recording analogue material, from a tape Dec, for instance, I am using the creative audio console which accompanies the x-fi elite pro. I am using the aux phono input on the back of the box, and everything has gone smoothly until a few days ago. When trying to record from my tape Dec this last week, I suddenly noticed that the sound was very distauted in the left channel. Right channel was fine.Of course the first thing I checked was the level, and this was absolutely fine too, both channels were set to around 50% in the sound-options control-panel. I then checked the cable and then tried it on other equipment as well, and everything was also fine here. I then re-connected it to the audio consul, but got the same results. Fine sounding audio in the right channel, but distauted in the left. I then tryed re-installing the newest vista-driver to see if this would solve my problem, however it didn't. Now I've only got audio in the right channel, but no audio at all in the left. Has somebody inhere experienced anything simurlar, and if yes, can you please tell me what could be wrong??All the best from Allan

On certain mobo/graphics card set ups and some sound cards there is an issue with bus latency. In short while playing back audio you will hear a frequent crackling of the audio. That is not the same as the slight click the Elite pro makes when changing modes. It has been a Creative issue for many years but is only present with certain combinations of hardware. I have experienced that issue myself but several years ago. My current Elite Pro/PC set up does not have this issue.

  • Gaps every 40 seconds when recording from cassette or records

Since purchasing Audition 3.0 some months ago, whenever recording from a cassette or record a blank space is inserted every 40 seconds into the recording. This gap is quite audible when playing the recording back.
I tried to contact support and twice it has not solved the problem...very frustrating...help much appreciated.
This was the major reason for purchasing the software.

Okay, not the results I expected to see, but let's keep hacking.
My next suggestion would be to change the audio device driver being used. Click Edit > Audio Hardware Setup and you should see a drop-down box labeled "Audio Driver." There should be at least 2 drivers listed: Audition 3.0 Windows Sound, and Creative ASIO.
If you are using the Creative ASIO driver, my first recommendation would be to stop. It is notoriously buggy and erratic. I would recommend changing to the Audition 3.0 Windows Sound driver which is not the most powerful driver, but is compatible with almost all hardware out there.
If you were already using this driver, or still experience the recording gaps, my next suggestion would be to visit http://www.asio4all.com/ and download and install the ASIO4ALL driver. It is similar in operation to the Audition driver, but it is based on WDM technology which allows for faster operation and more control over the hardware. Once installed, launch Audition and change the Audio Driver to ASIO4ALL.
If the gaps STILL occur, I think we can probably rule out audio drivers as the cause and move on.
Thanks for your patience as we troubleshoot this!

  • Audio sync when recording downloaded

Hi, when I download a recording from the connect server as a flash file, the audio tends to get out of sync. Typically our recordings are around 1 - 2 hours long, so it can be quite annoying
Any hints on ways to avoid this, or software we can use to resync the audio?
    Thanks heaps
    Jim
    http://www.theaviationindex.com

I'd like to tag along on this thread, if I may.  Our organization has just signed up on a monthly program with Connect 8 and I am also having A/V sync issues on downloaded programs.  As with the issue described in the post from HavillandHornet, we are having problems holding sync in our downloaced .fv's of programs , which range in 15-30 minutes in length.
I understand that .flvs were, originally at least, not created to hold sync for long periods, although we get pretty good results when just playing back the recording off the Adobe server.  It's just the playback of the downloaded file that gives us trouble  I'm wondering if there is any way to set the download to record in a more sync-friendly format?    I'm certainly not having much luck in converting the .flv to an editable format, like .mov to make sync adjustments and cleaner trims.
We began using Connect 8 around the first week of May, and the upgrades your indicated may not yet be operable. What is the status on that? Will those fixes affect the sync integrity on the recorded download or just the online playback.
Any enlightenment, work arounds or general bright ideas would be very helpful.

  • Realtek HD audio problem when recording

    Hello guys;
Been trying to do some recording for the first time since the OC was rebuilt. New specs as below.
(By the way, I couldn't get any sound at all until I reinstalled the UAA bus driver..., so it's thanks to this forum that I got sound in the first place!)
Anyway, the problem I now have is that basically the record level is way too high. I use Steinberg Clean 5.0 and was finding that although I could change the levels in the software, whatever level I recorded at I was suffering extreme amounts of clipping/distortion. (I should mention that the input is from a good quality hifi, I used it for many years for recording with my previous PC incarnation using my KT6 delta rig).
After much trial and error, I found that the only way to stop this is to have the recording sound level in volume set to - well it isn't numbered - it would be about 10%. I also discovered that although master recording level is adjustable the others  - CD, mic, line, mix are greyed out.
The master level is really difficult to set  (as I write I just discovered it's still distorting and I'll have to edged it down another couple of % towards zero), so I really want to change the "line" record level, but as I said it's greyed out.
In Realtek sound manager it's similar, in the record section there's an overall level control but no individual adjustments for record, only playback.
    Incidentally playback works just fine!
Realtek drivers are latest 5.10.0.5928 downloaded yesterday from Realtek.
    Anyone got any ideas please?

I think the audio out must be fine as it works just fine for general listening to CDs, LPs (!!), whatever played from the hifi. No distortion even with volume level (in "volume control") set at 100%  It's only the record level that's weird :-)
I'll try the headfone thing later, just trying to record something now!
Sorry, I'm not sure if this will help, as I haven't used Realtek HD audio for some time (always used add-in cards).  But in my experience, most sound controllers have an option in mixer to select the recording source (e.g. Mic In, Line In, S/PDIF-In, Wave, CD, etc).  In particular, many offer a recording source option for "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix".  Essentially, this would combine and capture the audio from every available source, rather than from just a single source.  I'm guessing it's a long shot but maybe you could change your recording source to this "mix" type (hopefully, something similar is available).  To reduce noise you'll probably want to MUTE other sources (Wave, MIDI, CD, etc.), though you could leave them enabled as well (try to avoid things that would inject noise).
I'm only suggesting this approach because you mention that the playback from your hifi is completely fine.  Only recording from line-in is distorted.  So perhaps, you can work around the problem by recording the mixed playback.  It shouldn't make any sense for this to be happening but maybe you'll be lucky??  My (worst-case) thought is that maybe your realtek HD's ADC is damaged and therefore playback is flawless but recording is flawed...
Another thought I had is mixer settings are often stored within an ini file.  If you or someone else could identify the file(s), then you should be able to view, and in turn, modify the numeric playback and recording levels.  That should aide you in adjusting the levels more precisely, rather than guessing levels via the obscure gui sliders.
It may turn out that none of my ideas are helpful, but I wish you good luck all the same.

  • Audio "popping" when prepared with f4fpackager

When I prepare a file for HDS using Adobe's f4fpackager tool I experience "popping" in the audio. It seems to be related to the fragment size, smaller size more often, but doesn't nessicary happen once per fragment.
I have tried multiple encoding options to address this. I am using h264/aac with keyframes every 24 frames and a framerate of 24 and doing "--keyframe-intervals-per-fragment 20 --frames-per-keyframe-interval 24 --frame-rate 24" on the packager
I also tried running Adobe's "sample2_1000kbps.f4v" file from the webroot/vod through the packager and playing it back using their integrated player (/webroot/index.html) and experience the same issue. I did this using the packager's default settings.
    This is single bitrate streaming.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue or have any ideas of what I could try?
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Hi Ed,
The audio popping was an issue with FMS, precisely when content was fragmented using JIT which is fixed in FMS 4.5.2. I am not sure you should be seeing this when fragmenting through the f4fpackager.
Can you please send me the URL that you are using to access the Adobe sample video - sample2_1000kbps.f4v ?
Also, please update your FMS to the latest 4.5.2 from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashmediaserver/downloads_updaters.html
And let me know if you are still facing the issue.
    Thanks!

  • Losing audio quality when exporting from premiere pro

I have now had this happen with two different videos. I play the video in premiere pro and the audio is fine. I export the video and lose most of the quality of the audio portion. One project is a music session when exported I only get the main vocal the drums aren't audible only a buzz sound is made where the kick drum would usually come in. On another project is a thank you video for a family member and the audio is distorted after being exported. The audio sounds fine inside of the session. Once exported the audio will still work fine on my computer and my iphone 5s as long as I'm wearing headphones, once I try to play the video through my iphone 5s speakers the audio quality is gone, making the noises as previously stated. My iphone can still play other tracks fine but videos and audio exported from Premiere Pro are distorted. Any advice on how I can export the video so I wont lose audio quality when playing the video on an iphone? I know it's not my iphone speakers, they play other songs just fine.

The source files as far as the audio goes are wav files that I've pulled off of my desktop. My sequence settings are 1920 by 1080 at 29.97 frames per second. The export settings are H.264 with the preset YouTube (HD 1080 29.97 FPS) and I've also tried HD video 1080p 29.97 FPS. If this isn't enough information please let me know I'm in the learning phase. Audio wise the quality is set to high and I'm exporting at 4800 kh and a bit rate of 190. I've also tried a bit rate of 320 and 264 I think it is and still had the same problems.  Let me know if I need to do screen shots I really want to figure this out.
    Thanks for your help!

I'm using airport extreme, wired connection, to a macbook pro (2011) and mac pro (2009). audio skips on both devices when streaming from pandora or grooveshark. problem has persisted through system upgrades, clean installs etc... Problem persists through different web browsers (Firefox/chrome/safari)
Ironicaly, Itunes radio does not skip, neither does netflix.
I have seen COUNTLESS posts regarding this problem from many different APPLE users. I would love to see apple address this problem...

Your first step is to determine if there is an issue with this specific movie or if it's a universal problem.  Does ANYTHING from the MBP provide both sound and video?
Another thought is DRM coding but that should affect both video and audio.  If the movie has DRM coding and your television does not, then the movie won't play.  I'm not an expert but I don't think that that's your problem because you do get the video.
