Lots of bugs: should I try reinstalling?

I upgraded my MacBook Pro from Tiger to Leopard and am experiencing lots of problems:
Application freezes
USB external drive only being recognized about 50% of the time
Digital camera card (in ExpressCard reader) no longer seen by iPhoto
Hangs during shutdown
Did I mention application freezes?
Wondering if I tried doing an Archive and Install reinstallation of Leopard would help? (Original install was just an "upgrade").
Thoughts?

An archive and install could help so is worth a shot. Ensure you unplug all external devices as well prior to commencing the A&I.

    and
    2. iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).
Now I've checked the forums and followed the advice of uninstalling all Apple applications, rebooting, and reinstalling iTunes.
This is not working. I've tried installing as Administrator but doesn't make any difference at all.
There must be a way to fix this? I'm not a tech geek but I want to avoid having to take my laptop back to factory settings to sort this out.
    Thanks

  • Please try reinstalling iTunes and try again.

Trying to buy a song today on iTunes and go the following message after most of the song had downloaded.
"There were problems downloading some purchased items.
For more information on the items that could not be downloaded, click below.
There was a problem downloading “To God Alone / Take Over / Aaron Shust”.
Please try reinstalling iTunes and try again."
On the download page is show "stopped (error = - 42100 or -41200) I tried to click the restart arrow in the circle and the listing in my download page disappeared.
Next I went to Store > Check for available downloads" and it said all purchases have been downloaded for this account. It also shows as purchased when I look at the album the track is in on iTunes. But I don't have my song.
Any other ideas or should I reinstall itunes???
    Thanks

Before doing a reinstall of iTunes - close iTunes and repair permissions with Disk Utility. Reboot your Mac and open iTunes and see what happens.
The instructions in the noted Apple article are for removing iTunes - not really to reinstall.
To reinstall these instructions have worked for me and others in the past.
    Close iTunes.
Go to HD>Library>Receipts - remove the iTunesX.pkg to the trash.
Drag your iTunes app to the trash.
B/U your iTunes Library file and .xml files. B/U your iTS purchases etc.
Download a fresh .dmg of iTunes 9.x.
    Install iTunes from the .dmg.
    Repair permissions with Disk Utility.
Launch iTunes and it all is well you can empty the Trash.

  • Message displayed: System extension cannot be used  The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Received following message during installation of an iTunes update today (9/16/14):  System extension cannot be used. The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.  What is to be done about it?

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not experienced in the inner workings of the iMac system and its programs, so please follow my train of thought as I try to find and understand your reply.
You wrote that I should check out "Please see - AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error on installing iTunes update" and I did so.
There I found your reply of 9/1014 7:06 PM to j'ski stating: "There is a larger thread here which you may want to follow - system extension cannot be used AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext ."
And an earlier Post by Greg Earle of 9/10/14 5:57 PM stating: " You would have been better off doing open /System/Library/Extensions and then finding the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext kernel extension icon in the Finder window that came up and moving it to the Trash."
And a subsequent Post on 9/15/14 at 2:59 PM by Rob Maurer stating: "This method worked perfectly for me.  I am on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. Dragged the kext file to trash (I use EasyFind. Found the file, Revealed in Finder, dragged to Trash, entered admin password when requested). Downloaded iTunes 11.4 from the website. Installed from that download. Checked for that kext file in EasyFind again and found it had a creation date of 7/29/14 (the trashed one had a creation date from 2009). No more error messages.  ITunes opens fine.  Everything good. Will not update on my MacBook Pro until they fix this issue.
All of which leave me wondering - what is your answer/recommendation?  Do I drag the kext file to trash, download iTunes 11.4 from the website and install it from that download, check for that kext file again to see if it has a later date than the initial one?  And, if so, seed if iTunes opens okay or not?  And if so, do not update iTunes again until Apple fixes whatever is wrong?

I'm still with you, just having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that you reinstalled OS X, which is like shooting a mosquito with a cruise missile, yet the problem remains.
Here is the KB article for your review: Reinstalling Mac OS X
Admittedly there is not much to it, but it should have eradicated the problem.
I would guess that the 17 "hp_" messages have something to do with Hewlett-Packard and in fact I do use an HP printer with the computer.  I uninstalled the printer software and reinstalled it.  The printer seems to work fine, but the kernel extension error messages still keep appearing.  I'm inclined just to delete these 17 kernel extensions and then, if the printer doesn't work correctly, unintall and reinstall the printer software again.  Sound sensible?
It certainly does. The only thing I can think of is that the OS reinstallation did not recognize those kernel extensions and left them untouched, AND the HP uninstaller did not remove them, AND the HP installer did not perform correctly. Having suffered through several HP botched software attempts I tend to believe that remains a posssibility.
If you are so inclined, I would remove the troublesome .kext files as you say, then reboot. Be prepared for the printer to stop working, but once you remove them try the printer again anyway. The vast majority of printers do not require any specific downloads since their drivers are already built into OS X.
As a last resort try reinstalling OS X again (I know...) and run Software Update to bring everything up to date. Apple released some new printer drivers a few weeks ago.
Finally, if this doesn't work post the same question as a new topic since I am out of ideas. A new topic will get more attention than unresolved questions with responses.

  • When installing iPhoto update, I got this pop-up -The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.  What does it

When installing iPhoto 9.2.1 software update, I got this pop up.
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
Is this a minor matter that can be ignored?  Any suggestions on what I should do?

The faster (and way more recommended) way to do this is to run a permissions repair from disk utility.
Open Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> Click on Macintosh HD -> then in the right pane there is a "Repair Disk Permissions" button click on this. It should repair all permissions to their proper settings.
Another option is to manually repair them on this kext only. This involves opening Terminal and running the following commands.
    sudo chown -R 0:0 /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext
    sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext
Otherwise if you don't have any firewire devices it doesn't really matter.

  • How do you fix the error - "The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/IOBDStorageFamily.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."

I have started getting this error every time I download anything to my computer. I want to know how to fix the issue so it dosen't happen anymore. The error is as follows:
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOBDStorageFamily.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
    Please help me.

Darned drivers.  Did you try using it without the drivers?  They may already be in Mountain Lion.  I'm super wary of vendor drivers for OS X; they're terrible and often an OS version out of date.
To re-install OS X, log into the Mac App Store, go to "purchased," re-download Mountain Lion, and double click "Install Mountain Lion" as you did the first time.  You won't lose data (have a backup!) and an hour later you should be good to go.
After that, try using the printer WITHOUT installing the darned Lexmark drivers.

  • DW won't run - mfc110u.dll missing on PC - What should I try next?

I've just tried installing and uninstalling DW CC 3 times.  Once even on the actual Admin User Login account.
I keep getting the message "The program can't start because mfc110u.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".
    I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
Any ideas what I could try to fix this issue?

    Hi Jon and others,
Thanks and others who tried to help.  The problem has been solved, before you responded, as I was so keen to get Dreamweaver to load I kept trying and trying and finally I managed to get it to load.
    What didn't work:
Simply installing the Microsoft C++ re-distributable Upgrade 2013 by Microsoft - over a completed Dreamweaver installation.
When trying to run Dreamweaver, even though initially the Dreamweaver application reported a successful install that error message kept popping up
    What did work:
Uninstalling all my old Redistributable Upgrades in the Microsoft Remove Programs Uninstaller
Then uninstalling Dreamweaver with all my saved settings removed as well.  I had no saved settings btw.
Then installing Microsoft C++ re-distributable upgrades for both, 32-bit and 64-bit.
    Then restarting the machine.
Then reinstalling Dreamweaver via the Cloud installer interface.
After that Dreamweaver loaded up.  Hooray!
Maybe some of the things in the list above was unnecessary, but the combination of all did fix my problem.
Hope this will help others as well, should they get the same issue.
    Happy computing.

What about the incredable lag time from clicking on a program to the time it opens (or the time till the loading screen starts)? I wish I could record it and play it so I could see if thats normal from other members... the icon just sitting there for over 35 second (I just counted 36 till the loading screen popped up) at first I thought it was me not clicking hard enought cuz the mouse button I have is real stiff (any ideas on that?) but no it takes that long just to get to the app loading screen... this happens every time same amount of time with the 3 programs I use the most, prolly more but I know for a fact world of warcraft, uTorrent, and Google Chrome. I would just chalk it up to slow hardware but they load real quick in windows 7 and once this bad spot is loaded the program runs so fast and nice afterword. Maybe some tweeks? I wonder if this would happen in Snow?
The coment "few outdated programs" Ive seen alot its not just a few its a lot and since games are not Apple's strong point I would think they would want to keep as many as they could...
An example of the rants you will see from a lot here. Don't be put off as these problems are generally user specific, and these same old comments come out after the release of every OSX I can remember. When Lion is upgraded  to the next OSX you can gaurentee these forums will be full of people screaming about how great Lion was. Happened with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
So come to think of it you may be better off Googling sites that give you unbiased views on Lion, rather than expect any positive comments here. For every one complaint there are probably 100,000 people with no issues.

  • Should I try to recyle my old AEBS to join a TC-based WDS network?

Actually, I tried to do this -- but with scary results. My query is:
    1. Should I try again?
    2. Is it worth the trouble and the potential trade-offs?
My stereo system in the far side of my home from the ISP access point where the TC sits and so the network needs a substantial boost in order to reliably play music -- and, perhaps, one day video-- wirelessly there.
I've got four legacy (g-level) AE's in addition to the old antenna-enhanced AEBS and, now, mated with a new TC.
I've set all this up as a WDS WPA/WPA2 network per Apple's sketchy documentation. (No point in dealing with Apple support; they max out help at three units on the network.)
Anyhow, one AE currently serves as a remote while the remaining 3 AE's have simply joined the AirPort network to pump out music in three separate rooms to three separate hi-fi systems. (I assume they are also extending the network's overall reach, as obviously is the solo AE remote, although I am not at all sure about this aspect.)
In any event, I thought, what the heck, why not also connect the old g-string AEBS to the network as a second remote. I duly added its MAC address to the TP's WDS table and made sure that its SSID, passwords, channel, etc. all matched up. I did not add the AEBS MAC address to the AE remote's table since I sought to use as the TC as a unitary hub.) Airport Utility found and set up the AEBS. But, in the process, AU could no longer discover any of the remaining units that had just been there. It took lots and lots of fiddling just to get them back as they had been working beforehand.
Query: Is there a sequence of loading that must be followed for such a dual remote setup? The AEBS would, I would hope, provide me with a solid -- instead of iffy signal -- to my main music listening room. (It packs more wireless punch than the new antenna-less TC.) How can I do this, however, safely -- without losing contact with my prior installed green-lighted AE units?
    Thanks.

I would save the current configuration for each device from Airport Utility to file. That way, you can always reimport the settings and get everything back to the current situation quickly if you need to.
You say you didn't add the AEBS to the AE's remote table, but if you have a single network with the TC as the single hub, should the AE even have a remote table? It is configured as a WDS remote, correct?
