Lots of "Cleaning Up" during render -- problem?

If I twirl open the triangle thingy during a certain project, there's a lot of "cleaning up" stages. What is this? Is it bad?

I doubt you could really optimize it. You could try to pre-compose some of the glows in cropped comps (if they only affect certain parts of the image and that is feasible), so this way you can limit the dilation/ expansion of pixels in all directions, but that's probably as good as it gets. As an alternative you can of course always find alternate third-party effects for such things, which may prove more processing and memory friendly. E.g. Sapphire has several different glow plugins. Or you use tools like Magic Bullet Looks that have internal diffusion/blur/glow operators running on the graphics card...

  • Has CS6 fixed the PPro with AE dynamic links slow to render problems?

I've got PPro with AE dynamic links slow to render problems similar to those discussed in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/904652?start=0&tstart=0
As I understand it (and I could well be wrong), if I render a PPro project that has AE projects dynamically linked in (anything from simple lower thirds to color grading), during rendering the AE bits run as a service, which limits the AE bits to a single CPU and effectively stops simultaneous rendering of multiple frames. This is why I can get very high render times (essentially no parallel processing), and why messing with the number of CPUs allowed for simultaneous frame rendering, or the amount of RAM said CPUs can access, has little to no effect on total render time.
Supposedly as some point AE was going to be changed such that it used Media Encoder to do it's rendering (same as PPro does), thus speeding up rendering for any PPro project that has AE parts dynamically linked in.
Has this been done in CS6? If not, any idea when that's scheduled to happen?

(I do wish Adobe staff would keep this distinction mind when creating their videos.  When I saw one about the new background rendering in PP, I was interested, only to learn that he was actually talking about background exporting, a feature PP has had since AME was introduced in CS4.)
The distinction is not so distinct, and this is an industry issue, not really Adobe. After Effects has a render queue, which is used for exporting, but you can also export. Lightwave has this, even Avid. The terms do have their own distinct meanings, but of course context is usually required. So usually "rendering previews" or "rendering final output" serve as context-sensitive uses of the term.
Terminology abuse is widespread, even people with video cameras now call themselves "filmmakers" and people who produce films never shown nor intended for a cinema call themselves "cinematographers." ENG video producers are called "photogs" and news photographers are called "photojournalists."
Transcoding, encoding, rendering, exporting....mish-mashed unfortunately, but thankfully most people can figure out what's meant.
Back to the OP - After Effects can be used with Adobe Media Encoder, it's just not the default. You can import any composition into AME from AE and render your encoded export.
As for background rendering....I remember when Pinnacle Liquid was the first to the table with that feature back in 2004 or 2005. It seemed awesome, except that you needed a ton of spare hard drive space and lots of processing to keep the background rendering going...effecitvely your processor was in use 100% of the time. When you weren't scrubbing or playing back, Liquid was rendering previews. Of course, you could use those previews during export but you rarely would have wanted to do so, since it was better quality to reference the original data when compositing the layers and effects to output to a web file, for instance. Then  you had to keep cleaning up the preview cache.
I rarely render previews at all, and when I do it's just a small segment at a time, just to get a full look at the final composite. Mercury Playback is usually more than capable of playing back most of my edits the rest of the time.

  • FCPX Project Render Settings - Can you edit in h.264 and Transcode/render only used clips on timeline to Prores during render?

I have a question on the PROJECT RENDER settings in FCP X. It’s seems to me that one could theoretically import and edit entirely with original h.264 video files without needing to Transcode to ProRes422. Once you’re done with your edit and want to get the added benefits of COLOR GRADING in ProRes422 color space, it seems that FCPX will automatically render your edit in ProRes422 according to these preferences. In that case, a color grade could be applied to the whole edit, and be automatically transcoded/rendered into ProRes 422 during the render process. After rendering, what would show up on the viewer and what would EXPORT would be the rendered Prores files and not the original h.264 files. This saves a lot of time and space of transcoding ALL your media, and in theory should enable you to edit NATIVE video formats like h.264, with automatic benefits of ProRes during render.  I'm assuming the render may take longer because FCPX is having to convert h.264 video files to ProRes422 while rendering. This may be one drawback. But will you your color grade actually use the 4:2:0 color space of the h.264 native media, or will it utilize 4:2:2 color space, since the render files are set to render to ProRes422 ? Can anyone please confirm that this theory is correct and optimal for certain work flows?? Thanks!

Thanks Wild. That's what I thought - in that the render files would be converted to ProRes422 codec. So do you or anyone else think that there is an advantage to having the 4:2:0 original file be processed in a 4:2:2 color space?
Yes there is an advantage, any effects and grading will look better than in a 4:2:0 space.
Most professionals online seem to think so. Also - will rendering of heavy effects and color grading take longer using this method because it's having to convert h.264 media to ProRes during render?
Yes, it will definitely take longer.
Can anyone verify from a technical standpoint whether editing and color grading in this workflow will see the same benefits as having transcoded the h.264 media to ProRes in the first place?
Same benefits from a final product view point, you lose on rendering time though and if you have lots of effects things will seem slow as it will have render everytime from the h264 file rather than a Pro Res file for every change you make. This may be fine on a higher end mac but I'm sure just pummels an older lower end mac as to being almost useless.

  • FCP6 keeps crashing during Render or if I try to export QuickTime.

    Hey guys,
FCP6 keeps crashing during Render or if I try to export QuickTime.
    Here's what I have:
    iMac 24" intel 3.06GHZ/ 6GB RAM/ 512 VRAM
    Canon T2i 1080p/24 footage (44min)
Using External drive for Scratch Disk. (Plenty of space available)
Can anyone help with this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    CJ

Did you convert this footage to ProRes, or just drag the H.264 files the camera shoots directly into FCP and start editing those? I'm guessing you didn't convert, thus why you are having this problem, and thus why we highly recommend people convert the footage to ProRes.
H.264 is not an editing codec.

  • Render problems

    Hi,
I have serious render problems with Premiere CC. I't wont render at all. Crashes down every time with a window saying occurred serious problem...
The file that i've been working on is heavy with AE direct links and above adjustment track.
Im working station is Mac Pro Mac OSX 9.2.
So I assume having this machine Premiere will run smooth.
But on contrary I cant touch my files because it will crash down.
Can anybody have any suggestions that are not exporting all my AE files as movie clips and reedit the whole video again.

  • GRRRRR!!!  AE CS3 crashes during render with quicktimempeg4.qtx as problem

Rendering will advance a seemingly random amount of frames, only to crash repeatedly. The info on the error points to quicktimempeg4.qtx as problem module. I have tried an array of codec packs, as well as quicktime 7.0.3 through the latest 7.4.1 update. Memory seems to be fine as I'm running Windows XP SP2, 2.8 Ghz Duocore, 4Gb RAM. Sometimes render makes it 4 frames, 72, 205, etc., but still crashes whether .avi, .mp4 or .mov render. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for the tips. I tried soloing about 30 of the videos for a render (with a 60 frame workspace just for testing), as suggested. Went with the QT Animation, alpha only, and it crashed after 1 second. Seriously, just instant crash. I did try render queue with an .avi export, no compression, and managed to get about 12 minutes into a decent render, but again crashes with quicktimempeg4.qtx as fault. I can export quicktime (.mov or .mp4) from Photoshop quickly and perfectly every time, no errors. So, its hard for me to think this is simply a quicktime or compatibility issue. I have had no problems whatsoever with Illustrator, Indesign, Flash, Photoshop, video conversion, etc. Occasionally with quicktime I will get a "buffer overrun detected" error when running multiple instances, but figured this was more of a memory issue. I'm totally flummoxed as this AE render error just seems to have no rhyme or reason at this point. The only unifying problem is that quicktime seems to be a problem. Although, when exporting .PSD files today, for individual screen captures on the same project, I had a crash that stated the OpenGL was to blame. So, I'll try disabling that per Jonas' suggestion. Of course any ideas are much appreciated!

  • Problem with Reader Extending during render.

I have a process that uses a custom renderer which pre-populates some fields on a form and then reader extends the form for the users.  The problem I am having is that when the process is initially invoked, the renderer works fine, and users using Adobe Reader can fill out the form.  But if some one else attempts to invoke the process while another user is using it, the form that is rendered is not reader extended and tells the user that the form has been reader extended, but that the form has been changed.
So basically, if one person is using the process everything works great.  If more than one person is using the form, then one person will work, while the others will not....
I'm attaching an LCA of the process.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Sound problem during render from iMovie to iDVD

I created an iMovie project that plays beautifully on my iMac G5 with OS X v 10.4.5.
When it comes time to create a DVD project, iMovie tells me that because of two slow motion scenes, that "rendering" has to be performed.
Within iDVD, the video plays fine. But the sound is warbled and slow (though in the correct key) throughout.
I closed iDVD, iMovie, rebooted, and tried to create another iDVD, but the same thing occurred.
Is there a way I can salvage this project?

    Hi, Paul,
iMovie 'renders' slo-mo in a way that you don't really want--as you discovered. So, get your movie into iDVD without letting iMovie render it. Try doing it this way:
Instead of sending your iMovie to iDVD from within iMovie, close iMovie.
Open iDVD, and create a new project. Click on the 'custom' button, and navigate to the 'Media' tab. Select 'Movies' and find your iMovie in the little window. Drag it onto the iDVD screen. Be sure not to put it into a drop zone. Then, make the titles and buttons the way you wish.
Save the DVD as disk image. You can play that after it is finished to see if the sound is what you want. If so, go ahead and burn your DVD.
    Hope this helps!!

  • FCP HD Render problems... lots of random crashing... help!!

I'm using FCP to edit 8-bit uncompressed HD. Kona 3 card, Quad G5, 8.5Gbs RAM, Sonnet Tempo SATA card hooked up to two 8 bay raid towers totaling a little over 7TBs... RAID 0. OS X (10.4.7), FCP 5.1.1. The towers have 8 Seagate 500GB drives each... all run through port multiplier into four inputs on the Tempo SATA card (very fast, by the way).
I have changed computers, Kona 3 cards, memory, reloaded software, trashed prefs, rebuilt permissions, etc. Problem persist. I guess we've narrowed it down to the RAID, the Sonnet card or the software. I can't do anything about the software... and changing the storage would be VERY expensive. Any ideas or experience with this??
Is anyone successfully using a big SATA RAID w/ the Sonnet card?? I'm about to take a sledge hammer to this computer! Is anyone using an XRAID and NOT having problems with 8 or 10-bit uncompressed HD???
    Please help!!
    PowerMac Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Suggest you search for that specific camera model, might find some helpful suggestions from experienced users.
What format of "HD" are you shooting? There are about 50 different versions. If it's HDV, there is a huge volume of traffic to read through. A solution will depend largely on your machine's ability to decompress and build the i-frames on the fly.

  • Computer shuts down during render/prerender

This was not my original problem but it has occured before and I know it will occur again.
My computer shuts down for no reason when I try to render or prerender video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. From what I can tell it is a general issue with premiere that I am having. I have tried multiple video formats, multiple video lengths, and multiple rendering options and I am still getting random shut downs during rendering.
Here are some specs for my computer which is a laptop:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS)
Proccessor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 ghz
    Ram: 8 gigs of it
    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
1 Hard Drive w/ 280 gb of space
As a recap.... My exact problem is that during the rendering or pre rendering proccess my computer simply shuts down as in it turns off.
I can also add that the computer does act strangely leading me to believe that theres some hardware or software incompatibility. While it is rendering I can hear the CPU fan pick up which is usually normal for any rendering application but what I noticed was that it doesnt stop speeding up. Its like if it was going into an overload and I can confirm that at its peak, the computer shuts down.
To add troubles... whenever I pre render any video and it succesfully renders.... Premeire will hang up really really bad if I try to play the pre rendered preview. In otherwords when you preview a video that it pre rendered it usually plays smooth and everything is fine. After I pre render something though and play it I can tell its locking up because the timeline bar is really jumpy and the video playback skips also.
This is the problem I would really love fixed. I usually have to button smash my keyboard until I lock premiere up and then once it unfreezes itself i can preview my work smoothly. This is however like a good 5 mins of my time trying to get the preview to play smoothly though so its really hurting how fast I can work.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I will be trying to run the same stuff on my older laptop and observe the results. I personally think CS4 is incompatible with windows 7.

    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
If you have a recent nVidia driver installed, you might want to check to see if you have either of these two modules loaded - check in the nVidia console:
PhysX, or 3D Stereovision. If you have them, definitely disable 3D Stereo, and test. If no improvement, disble PhysX and test.
Also, try adjusting your Hardware Acceleration. If Max, set to Min and test. If Min, set to Max and test. If either helps, try incrementing up, or down, until it no longer helps.
Last, check your OpenGL settings. If ON, turn OFF. If OFF, turn ON.
It appears that you have a laptop. Is that correct?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

We use Windows 7 64bit, so the first step I did - I went into Application Log which says, so appears to be a problem with Graphics.rpln.

I have tried everything I could think of - removed and reinstalled Adobe CS5, manually removed Adobe folders under %Appdata%\Local and %Appdata%\Remote folders (why can't Adobe delete those things during uninstallation is always a total mystery), changed video adapter drivers, cleaned Temp folders, everything I knew...
None of the other apps like Photoshop or Illustrator CS5 malfunction - only Indesign. What is going on?
Can it conflict with other software we use? We have Bentley Microstation, 3D Max, Office 2010, Kaspersky Antivirus and LOGMEIN installed on this computer...Any clues, guys?

Looks to me like you've never installed any of the patches. Last patch for CS5 was 7.0.4, so I'd start with that and see if ti helps.

  • Boris text render problem

    Hello,
I am having a problem with the Boris Title Crawl text generator. The problem manifests itself as a field dominance problem. Here is a description of how to create the problem:
    1) Create a new project in FCE (I am using FCE 4)
    2) Drag the Boris Title Crawl generator to the timeline
    3) Open the clip in the viewer
    4) Enter some text into the generator
    5) Select the "roll" animation style
    6) Render the clip (IMPORTANT)
Set the zoom in the canvas to 100% and play the clip. Notice the interlace artifacts, particularly in the curved parts of the text. Note that the fields appear to be *out of order*. That is, the upper field should be the lower field and vis-a-versa.
I've been trying to figure out how to fix this problem. Applying a deinterlace filter cleans it up but you loose resolution. I've tried applying the "shift field" filter but this does not clean up the problem, though a setting of "-1" makes a small improvement. This appears to either be a problem with the Boris generator or some field dominance problem. The field dominance for the clip is "not set". Changing this setting does not fix the problem. Field dominance for the sequence is "Upper" which is what is expected for the HD sequence.
    Any thoughts?
    Steve

Tried to reply to your message but it bounced.
The field order does not appear reversed to me. You're seeing the correct interlacing. You're not seeing interlacing on the LT project because it's project properties have the field order set to none. If you set the project properties inside the LT project to upper you will see the same interlacing. Interlacing is correct for 1080i material. If you don't want to render with interlacing set the sequence field dominance to none and re-render it.
    All the best,
    Tom

  • AE cs6 crash during render preview

AE is crashing during a render preview.
    Version: cs6 11.0.4 (recently updated).
System: iMac mid 2011 running os X 10.7.5
Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 16 gb 1333 MHz RAM
Error message: "Last log message was: <4453353824> <ae.blitpipe> <2> Making New Context."
In my comp I am using four masked solid layers with keyframes, no 3D or 3rd party plugins. The crash occurred after adding an adjustment layer and applying Turbulent Displace with an expression and Simple Choker. Crash occurs at the same point in the timeline every time I do a render preview. I've tried purging the cache, rebooting everything. I tried clearing the preferences with the command "command option shift" at startup, but that didn't seem to work (got no pop up window with yes/no option, maybe not doing it right?). Please let me know if you have any advice or need more information to clarify the issue. Thanks.

The problem is in Mask 1 on the Head layer. Delete and redraw/re-animate that mask.
    Or, better...
Why are you drawing masks on solid layers for animation? That stopped being the right way to create graphics in After Effects seven years ago, when we introduced shape layers. I strongly recommend using shape layers for the kind of work that you're doing here. Also, I just checked, and copying and pasting your mask paths into shape layers path makes the problem go away, so whatever bug there is there is just with masks on solids.
To learn shape layers, go through Andrew Devis's materials in this series:
