Lots of crazy internet issues

I seem to be having a massive amount of random internet issues after upgrading to Leopard. The first and most apparent is that Mail and iChat both get randomly disconnected and Mail often insists that it cannot connect to the IMAP server one moment, only to work perfectly again within a minute while no other internet services (Safari, Transmission) are affected.
Safari has decided that http://news.bbc.co.uk is actually http://www.apple.com. I kid you not. I try and look at BBC news and I am consistently redirected to Apple's website. news.bbc.co.uk/iphone goes to apple.com/iphone. I've never seen anything like it before in my life.
Mail's RSS feeds seem to randomly disappear. No trace of their existence is left. After switching the 'default RSS reader' preference to Safari and then back to Mail, they re-appear - with all articles unread.
On the whole, quite a number of confusing bugs.

So, what happens if you go here: http://212.58.226.73/ ? That's the IP address that news.bbc.co.uk is supposed to point to. I found that by looking in Tiger's Network Utility as my Leo is still on it's way to me. If you want to know what that IP is before going there ( a good idea ), you can put that in the lookup tab on Net Util and see what comes back.
If the IP works, then DNS is hosed somewhere. See what Net Util says news.bbc.co.uk translates to. If it the number above, it's a Safari thing. If it's apple (starts with 17 IIRC) then it might be fixable by flushing the DNS cache though I don't know how to in Leo (shouldn't be hard).
If you did an upgrade install, you might want to reinstall using Archive and Install.

  • 10.3.9 Internet issues

    Hi All
i have been trawling through the fourms and still cannot find a solution to my iMac internet issues. I have done a complete format and reinstall of Mac OS X 10.3.9 (to be fair i downloaded update on another computer and instelled via USB stick) everything works great can import into firewire from camcorder etc. Airport card can see the wireless connection but when i enter the password it states there is a problem and connot connect. I have tried everying (to what i can understand anyway) and teh main reason for a clean install was to get rid of any possible conflicts that may have been there.
everything else can use the internet including my MacBook (intel) fine. Some one did suggest once that DNS settings were not correct which to be honest i did not userstand how to alter them, plus if eberying else was ok why just this iMac playing up.
Please can you assist just want to this to connect so my son can upload his filming to pleople for his re school assignments.
    thank you in advance

    Oops!
Could you specify what iMac you have, the specs of the system & computer,
as that may help research or find workable ideas for you to try. This would
help in troubleshooting, or in discovering Support articles to link you to in
    the course of a discussion.
I just re-read your post and had thought it was for a later
mac + OS X that would not run in PowerPC vintage!
(The mention of MacBook threw me off, as did a recent newer
OS X upgrade that may run -- in that newer hardware 10.9.3)
    So you've upgraded a PowerPC iMacG4 to Leopard 10.3.9
and the internet doesn't work? The wireless router may be
using a different security protcol than the old Airport Card
can support; you may have to test the unit via Ethernet to
be sure the computer itself is fully updated. It may go to
Apple servers to look for Software Updates.
The settings for the wireless security may be incorrect,
since later WPA2, won't apply to vintage AirPort card.
With a later OS X such as Tiger 10.4(.11) the odds do
improve for connectivity to the internet.
The DNS settings should not be an issue if you can use the
internet with a recent version computer and later OS X.
Not sure how to help, except to try as a test, to run without
the security you'd really want with the wi-fi (WPA2, etc)
turned on, to see if the old iMac can then use it.
Another issue would be the lack of correct frequency; a
newer Wi-Fi system may not be set to be backward
compatible to 802.11a/b, newer ones use 802.11/b/g/n/+
You may check to see if the router has a setting to allow
use of lower or older spec connection.

No they do not and no it is not affecting a large portion of the user community.
If it is an actual hardware issue, the only fix is to repair or replace the hardware.
If it is a software issue, restoring as new will fix it.

Has anyone else had this problem, if so any help would be great, casue I really do not want to take the computer in again only for them to tell me its fine.

  • Incessant Internet Issues

    Hi there
It's been a while since I last posted on these forums with an internet issue, but my connection is really messed up. I'll see if I can do the speedtester stuff in between the constant disconnections that I am getting.
My router stats are at the end of this message. Despite the fact my Downstream speed keeps switching between 6Mbps - 7.9Mbps, I am getting around 1.6Mbps, which I expect. The very high number of errors is telling me that my line is really noisy: my parents have told me that the line, when using the phone, was very noisy when calling other people, which would confirm that theory.
I do know that there are some works being done in a plot of land right next to the telephone exchange and I suspect it's BT adding the fibre broadband exchange in preparation of activating fibre in my area by the end of the year, is it possible this is causing line issues ? I know we've also had really bad weather and I'm suspecting this to be a factor in my connection issues.
Many thanks for any help I can get.

  • Sudden Internet issues....

I bought my Macbook in Jan 2011, and this week my internet has been acting up.  I cannot access the itunes store or applications, and a lot of my internet pages are not accessable. Pretty much only Facebook and youtube work... if I try to use any other sites, it shows as an error. My msn also signs me out constantly.  My wireless internet is connected fully, and appears to have no connection problems, yet this has been happening.  I thought I might have a virus, but I checked my system and I don't. Help please!

Could you see your base station from each Mac?
On the Macs that can't connect you might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Help with crazy printer issue? ;)

    Hi All!
My printer  is about 2.5 years old and just a few days ago started acting crazy.  It seemed to have started when we had a client try and send a fax and it never came across.  There was an error message that kept coming up... something like "wrong size paper selected?", although the fax was a standard size that fax never came through.  We since had friends send faxes and they do come through.  But after that.....
Then it started taking a long time to communicate between our computers and the printer.  Typically it has printed immediately when we hit the print command.  now it takes several minutes..... Like it's tired and thinking a lot and confused.  (a lot like me these days, interestingly - must be another forum however )  Anyway we turned it off with the power button on the front of the machine as we have often done, and a message came on that said something like "this machine was not properly powered down, use the power button - which we had.  At one point when it was trying to print the fax (which was not two sided) it started to pull a paper out that had just printed and pull it back into the machine.  I've never used the two sided feature but figured, oh that's interesting....but not helpful.
I hate to buy a new printer this one is only 2.5 years old.  Out of warranty but really?  Can't it be fixed?  I think we had a PGE power outage over the weekend before the fax came through maybe the power outage impacted it?  Is anything going on astrologically that I should know about?  (this is a joke and I know another forum)  We have four computers that are networked and all 4 computers have the same long delay when printing.
    HELP.  thank you.
    Madison

Hi @madisondelaney I Googled astrological signs hoping to find a solution, but I quickly got confused and thought maybe I would stick with what I know!
You said you had a PGE power outage over the weekend, is your printer connected with a USB cable or is it setup wirelessly? I know you said the computers are all networked, I just wonder what connection type you use for the printer.  Also, what printer model do you have?  How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Do you currently have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet, or is it in a surge protector or power bar? If you are currently using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector
In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector

  • Pantech Jest Internet issue

I have the Pantech Jest, have for about a year. I never really have issues with it. I know its not a smart phone so theres not much you can do on the internet. theres not much i look to do except check my email and facebook. Its been working fine with those until recently. In the last week or so when im on facebook and i click the link 'See More Posts' on my news feed, a message comes up and says unsupported content. Now, starting last night, when i try to ge tonto facebook at all it says unsupported content. does anyone know why thats happening? i dont get it. its worked just fine. now what do i do?

    Good morning KayH.
I know not being able to use your phone how you're use to, or supposed to be able to can be very frustrating.  Have you tried removing the battery from the phone for about 20 seconds?  You can also try clearing the temporary Internet files, as the phone may have a lot of memory/ usage with the applications used, such as Facebook, e-mails, etc.  For steps to clear the temporary Internet files, please select the following link:  Clear Temporary Internet Files
If this does not help, please send me a Private Message and I will be happy to personally assist you!

  • New Photos application causing internet issues across my network.

Very odd behavior.  Downloaded Photos on the 9th and began to upload to ICloud.  I have 200GB storage which is sufficient.  On the 10th, our entire wireless and wired internet system was experiencing extreme intermitancy.  If my desktop computer (the one running Photos) was hooked to the net, wirelessly or wired, it would register "host not found" on ping tests through the terminal.  If you could get it to connect, internet speeds were fine, but package loss was the issue.  If another computer was on the internet and the desktop was disconnected, but then tried to connect, the desktop would connect, but boot off the other computers and they would experience package loss or "host not found" errors.  We tried this with both MAC and PC computers, the 2nd computer would alway be booted and lose connection.  Everything has been tested multiple times, we tested multiple configurations.  Modem is fine, airport is fine, cables tested and fine, interference on lines checked and there is none.  When I disabled ICloud upload for my photos from the desktop, internet is perfectly fine across the board.  Multiple computers can run, this computer can run, etc.  No package losses, great speeds.  With Photos running, my desktop connects to the internet, then exhibits huge packet losses and drops, and then you are unable to connect without a full reboot.  Once re-connected, you stay connected for moments, then are dropped.  I have 30Mbps download, 3Mbs upload which for our location is already a Pro Level account.  Any suggestions as I can't turn on Photos or the entire system goes down.  Anyone else having this issue?

Yes others are seeing this issue…
    10.10.3 Nuking My Network
Re: Your internet on life support? Blame Photos app.
It is basic networking - when one device is sending a lot of data on a network other devices cannot send data too - the 'medium is shared'.
Normally applications try to reduce this issue by allowing a certain amount of throttling (reducing the amount of data sent to help others use the same network resources). Sadly Photos has no option to set this. Throttling will make the process take longer.
It effects the internet because outbound traffic gets maxed out by Photos uploads, other devices cannot make requests so they have to wait, sometimes the OS may give up (timeout happens before a result comes back).
This is my summation of the situation, with some workaround ideas (that needs work to apply).

    Hi Folks,
    We
have a internet link with site to site VPN connection. We are facing
performance issues on this link for past few days. We analyzed that
internet interface of our router was negotiating with service provider
modem on 10Mbps/half duplex and there was some collisions on the
circuit. We asked the provider to hard code the settings to
100Mbps/Full on thier modem so that our router will negotiate
100Mbps/full settings. Will it make the performance better now? We have
internet link speed of 768K upload & download..
Please let me know, if more information required.
    Mahi
    Hi Mahi,
It will give you a better performance compare to 10 Mbps configuration setup because in 10 Mbps/half duplex and peer end 100Mbps/full duplex will end in always poor performce and lots of port error and frame error in network.Better recomendation for having a good performance port and router and modem ports need to full duplex with 100 Mbps.
and Min. requirement for site to site von connection is  512Kbits/sec of internet bandwidth at each site
    Hope to help

  • Dell Laptop Internet issue after installing HP software for the C309a

We have a wireless network and I have the software and drivers for the C309a successfully installed on my Gateway (Vista) laptop without issue.  After installing all the drivers and software on my wife's Dell Inspiron 1525 (Vista) for  the printer, the laptop struggles to connect to the internet through the wireless router.  Any web site that is a https takes several attempts to log onto, others will connect after a refressh.  The HP Cue is also crashing and closing.  I uninstalled the HP software and the connection was back to being normal with no difficulty connecting to the net.  I re-installed the HP software and the same thing is occurring (even the HP Cue crashing) where you can not get on her AOL mail or even Facebook unless making several attempts (and even then no gurantee it will let you on).  I uninstalled the HP software and all is well again with the internet connection.  I have not installed the latest version of the HP drivers and software as this is version 12 and I see that version 13 is avalable.  Was this an issue in the past and does version 13 fix this or do I have another issue?
    Thank you for the advice.....
    Mike

Some of the HP software creates a lot of network traffic.  It can overwhelm some routers.  What kind of router and ISP do you use?
Download 13 from here but do not subscribe to the Customer Participation Program (it creates a lot of traffic).

  • Getting someone to come to the house to check internet issues

Our internet has been going up and down for WEEKS now and we have reset the modem ourselves several times.  I called Comcast last week and they reset the modem on their end, but we are still have connectivity issues.  Today I tried to call customer service 7 times.  4 times it was busy or a crazy sound.  3 times the call was dropped when I was finally (after multiple voice recorded messsages) able to speak with an agent.  I just want to get a technician out to the house.  Metronet is coming into our neighborhood and they can't get here fast enough.  SO FRUSTRATED WITH COMCAST!!!

Sorry to hear about your issues with Comcast. I let a Comcast employee from the corporate office know about your issues and have requested that they reach out to you. If you don't hear from anyone soon, let me know.
