Lots of freeze ups since 10.6- 10.8 upgrade

I've got an early 2011 MacBook Pro (15", 2 GHz i7, 4Gb).  I ran 10.6 for over two years
and it was rock solid.  I think it crashed maybe once in all that time.  Recently,
my employer stopped supporting 10.6, but does not yet support 10.9, so I "upgraded"
to 10.8.3.  Since then, the reliability has dropped to near Windows ME levels.
The general symptom is that one by one, applications will start to freeze.  I can usually
"Force Quit" the first couple, but then Finder freezes and I'm just left with the wheel of
death.  I have no choice but to push the reset button.  This has happened at least once
or twice a week since I upgraded - definitly NOT what I'm used to with Apple products.
I've tried the usual things: safe boot, permissions repair, disc repair, but nothing seems to
help.
Any advice for things to look for would be greatly appreciated.

OK, this time it crashed as soon as I booted it up.  Here is the entire console dump from the time it came up until I had to push the reset button.  I see some warnings about my AFS client.  Maybe that has something to do with it?
Thanks

  • I have been getting a lot of pop ups since I have upgraded to lion. How do I stop the pop ups?

I have been getting a lot of pop ups every time I get on the internet and especially if I do any kind of searches.  I never used to get any on my mac and now all of a sudden, since I upgraded to OSX Lion 10.7.4 I am getting them every time. This is making me sick! I got a mac so I would never have to deal with this stuff...
How do I get rid of them?

  • My iphone 4s keeps freezing up since new update. Any suggestions

Since the new update my iphone has been having a lot of freeze ups. I did restart it but it did not help. It is happening to my ipad also.

    Oh OisinC7,
I'm aslo experiencing similar problem. Tell me your country and what apps make your phone freeze?

  • Lots of Freeze/Windows Not-Responding Issues

I'm using an MSI Geforce 660Ti
    Here's some system specs.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    GPU Info
    DirectX 11
    Direct 3d Api Version 11
    Graphics Clock 1032Mhz
    Memory Data Range 6008 Mhz
    Memory Interface 192 Bit
    Memory Bandwidth 144.19 Gb/s
Total Available Graphics Memory: 4096 MB
    Video Bios Version: 80.06.28.00.39
    IRQ 16
    Bus PCI Express x 16 Gen 2
    Hardware:
    Processor: Intel i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4 Ghz 3.70 Ghz
    Installed Ram: 8GB
PSU is some generic Coolermaster 950W (Manifest Said Coolermaster but not even sure what it is)
Anyways..I've been experiencing problems with gaming for the last few months or so. I'm not getting system lock ups, reboots, or BSoD's at all. What I am getting is intermittent freeze-ups, and Windows has stopped responding errors on and off. Sometimes while gaming, everything just locks then I see the mouse icon change to the 'busy' image, then it unfreezes and goes back to normal. It also occurs when I login to games, and the graphics are loading. I can hear a very very soft and subtle noise from within the PC. It's a sort of 'click' sound, but it's not a typical 'broken' click-click-click noise. It kind of sounds like the GPU is just trying to 'do' something and whenever it's doing 'that' it makes the sound. I haven't underclocked/overclocked the card at all. I tried to increase the settings just a little to see if it would help. It doesn't seem to be doing much.
I'm guessing the problem is related to the Gpu, Psu, or HDD but I have no idea how to tell. I'm reluctant to bring it into the shop again. The PC came with a GTX 470 about three years ago. After about a year of using it, it started causing me BSoD's, system lock ups/reboots, etc. When I replaced it with this 660Ti all of those problems stopped. This gpu is roughly a year old now and these problems only surfaced within the past 6 months or less. Sometimes when I game I run two clients of the program and I leave games running constantly. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this.
I've tried running Spybot, and Malwarebytes. Neither have found anything obvious or virus related. A few weeks ago I downgraded from gpu drivers from around March 2014, to some drivers from a year or two ago. I wanted to see if older drivers would add stability at all. They haven't seemed to do much. The graphics load a little slower in games now, and the freezings still occur. As far as computer temperatures, I haven't noticed anything abnormal. Usually the card runs at 30-45C and I've never had a BSoD. Before I downgraded the drivers, I was getting a lot of driver crashes in Aion. It wasn't happening in any other game. (Aion uses Cryengine) Anyways, I'm not sure what to do anymore. I'm reluctant to buy a 3rd gpu because I'm not sure if the GPU is faulty, or if it's my HDD or PSU.

You mean when you get intermittent freeze-ups, windows also shows error messages? What kind of message?

Have you use another mouse to try if it's not because of the mouse?
If you already tried different MSI drivers and they didn't do much, maybe you can try the drivers from NVIDIA website. (Remember to uninstall your MSI driver first)

  • Random freeze ups.  Must reboot each time.

Random full screen lock with no errors reported using the hardware test disc. Mouse can move on screen (arrow or beach ball) but no clicks or key presses of any kind cause a response. The clock freezes instantly as does video playback. Audio dies altogether (or starts looping) within a few seconds of freeze-up but not quite instantly like screen (except mouse cursor) does. The only way out is by holding power key for 3-4 seconds until MacBook Pro shuts off. Force quit popup box never comes with commandoptionesc. Even right now I'm holding my breath that I can post this before the next occurrence since it has become a daily event.
This just started about 30 days ago. Never had this happen in Tiger but probably unrelated. My thing is that I'm out of warranty by self-upgrading the internal hard drive awhile back. Hoping someone can help with a diagnosis. At first thought maybe it was time machine or boot camp causing the freeze ups, but I ruled them out. Although left and right fans almost always stay at 1k RPM, I'm now wondering if maybe there's a heat issue or video card (ATI) issue - but those are really just guesses. I've done a clean install and recovered only some files back from time machine. I've done a PMU reset and tried the factory ram only. Nothing seems to work, plus booting from the hardware test shows no hardware errors. Booting from leopard to run fix disk and permissions also did nothing. Keeping in mind that I've voided my warranty can anyone suggest next steps? I'm not great at understanding console messages but nothing seems to show in logs at exact time of freeze up that I can tell. For the record Software updates says I'm current including firmware stuff too. Never had an issue like this since OS 7 when multi-finder was introduced. This is making me nuts, so if you'll indulge me, here are my machine specs...

I think the fan defaults to 1,000 rpms. Only thing I've found that seems to help is keeping the fan speeds at about 3,000 rpms. No more freeze ups (except one) when I keep the fan speed up a bit.

  • How do I just remove the current update to 3.6.12 and go back to an earlier version as I can not take the continual freeze ups ever few mins.? If this continues I will remove Firefox totally and switch to another browser I can not take this anymore.

I can NOT take the continual freeze ups of my entire browser even worse when updating a page let alone just opening email. I closed the browser and have had to use even just microsoft or Google since this Firefox has gotten so horrible...
I clear my history and my cache so many times a day I can not keep track anymore and that is insane to have to do it as many times as I am even worse that it does not help in the least!
I have used Firefox for years now but if I have to remove it and switch to a different one by the days end I will and I will post in Facebook to all my friends who I had switch to Firefox what and why though some have already just switched to other browsers.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

  • HT1338 Frequent freeze up since installing Lion.

My computer freezes up very often (several times/hour) since I updated to Lion.  The cursor still moves, but the screen is frozen and nothing responds to the cursor.  I have a mid 2007 iMac.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Earlier this week (on the advice of a post on this support page) I replaced my Logitech wireless mouse with my old Apple mouse.  After that I went 1 1/2 days without a freeze up.  Yesterday the freeze ups started again.  It seems they happen about every 1/2 hour.  It's curious that if the freeze up occurs during a video, the screen freezes and the audio plays on until the end.
Today I copied the following information from the console screen.  I deleted at total of 1,656 lines of the 'kernel' messages.  I indicated the two places where I deleted the 36 pages of lines,

  • Windows Vista Business 32 freeze-ups

I own a Lenovo T61 with these specs:  T7500 (2.2Ghz) Centrino VPro, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb 5400 rpm HD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11 agn wireless, Bluetooth, Fingerprint reader, 1Gb ethernet, Intel Turbo Memory, 14.1 in. widescreen.
I keep getting computer freeze-ups.  There is no rhyme or reason to these freeze-ups.  It happens when I'm on the Lenovo advanced mini-dock or when I'm not on the advanced mini-dock and just using the laptop by itself.  I can be working on a file on the computer or logged onto the Internet and the computer will just randomly freeze up.  If I right-click on the toolbar below and try to click on Task Manager, nothing happens.  If I try to click on the Start button, nothing happens.  If I do a Ctrl-Atl-Del, nothing happens.  I end up having to do a hard shutdown and restart in order to get back into Windows.  This happens at least four or five times a week, and has been doing that since I bought this laptop.  I purchased this computer in May.  I've made sure and kept up on all updates from Microsoft and Lenovo.  They are all current and up to date, but I still get these random freeze-ups.  It's very frustrating.
I'm beginning to think I might have to downgrade back to XP Pro (the XP Pro disks were supplied when I purchased the computer), which I really don't want to do if I can help it.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions?
    Greg

Oops.  I can't disable it, either.  On to plan B.
On a system without Turbo Memory, Vista would set up a ReadyDrive using the non volatile (NV) cache of the system drive.  My theory is that some application is bypassing the Intel Turbo Memory Controller and attempting to access the unused NV cache of the system drive directly.  You can shut off support for the NV cache in group policy and see if that helps (ReadyDrive remains checked in the Intel Turbo Memory Console application):
Start > Start Search Box > gpedit.msc > Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Disk NV Cache > Turn Off Non Volatile Cache Feature > Enabled >  OK
    Restart and see what happens.

First thing? Check the File Free at Options > Status, what is the number at File Free?
Now, leaving the device powered ON, remove the battery of your device, hold a minute, replace and reboot.
What is the File Free now?

  • Freeze-ups, problems, and "First Aid Failed"

I've been experiencing some freeze-ups lately on my Macbook Pro. I verified and repaired disk permissions on Disk Utility, but when I went to verify the disk itself, it said "First Aid Failed". It did say "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair" and "Invalid volume free block count (It should be 815187 instead of 814946)" and "The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
    "1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
What should I do to fix this problem? Thanks.

If you can't find anyone with the right install disks but (depending on the size of your startup volume) you can get your hands on an external drive of some kind you might want to try using CarbonCopyCloner to clone your basic system to it, selecting it as your boot volume in system preferences, booting from it, and then repairing your internal drive using Disk Utility from the cloned install.
It's definitely not the most elegant solution, especially since you would essentially be attempting to fix a corrupted volume with a corrupted volume, but it might be worth a shot in your case due to the limited availability of your install disk.
    Just a thought.

  • Can the battery cause freeze ups/ beach balls?

    Hello all,
Recently bought a newertech batt replacement that I saw referenced on here and at first all was good. After a day or so though the computer would lock up with browser open and not come back from sleep. The cursor would disappear.
I am wondering if the battery could cause this since it occurred occasionally after it went to sleep (Screensaver)? Perhaps I didn't calibrate the battery correctly?
I did a hardware test with the disk that comes with ibook and all parts passed including new hard drive, although disk permissions won't repair - gets stuck.
    thanks,
    Al

There may be some other hardware issues at play in
your computer; a new battery if properly calibrated
and the other aspects of the general system are good,
    the machine should work.
Have you tried starting the computer in SafeBoot,
then try Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions'
and then restart normally? Also, if you can't get
'disk permissions' to work, boot from the installer
disc and use that Disk Utility; also 'repair disk.'
Have you used a widget to see if the battery specs
are in the good range, and if it is getting charged
when other indications say that it is? iStat is a good
one. Also Sys Profiler can tell you a thing or two.
A proper reset of the PMU may help, if the issue
is related to charging, power, battery life, etc.
A too full hard disk drive with inadequate free space
for the system to function, and inadequate space for
virtual memory, could cause freeze-ups hangs and
other issues. This would be more likely & critical.
Look into Activity Monitor and see how all things
    stack up. Free space vs full space; RAM vs demand;
virtual memory, CPU use, network activity, etc.
You replaced the hard disk drive? Damaged a cable?
Could be if there are read-write errors, the ATA
controller chip on the logicboard may be suspect.
    Preventative maintenance and general housekeeping
are like troubleshooting in advance; since you know
the last time several recommended things were done.
How many places did you ask the same questions, btw?
    Good luck & happy computing!
    edited.

  • S12 freeze-ups with Firefox

I am experiencing random but recurrent freeze-ups using Firefox - to the point where the only thing that works is holding down the power button.
The machine is a VIA-based S12, factory-installed XP, to which I have added 1 GB of 667 MHz RAM salvaged from my wife's Asus (to upgrade her RAM I had to remove and replace the existing DIMM, so I simply transferred it to the Lenovo).
The scenario is always the same. A page loads and I scroll downwards using either the keyboard or mouse (using the scroll bars and mouse buttons, or the mouse wheel ... doesn't mattter). Just as the screen starts to move upwards, the machine freezes completely. The only reaction I ever get is the system "beep" when my frantic efforts to recover end up filling the keyboard buffer.
The weird thing is, if I reboot and reload the same web page - it happens again! On another session I can visit the same web page without incident. I first thought my Firefox installation was at fault. But that doesn't make sense because it's a _portable_ install that I am using without problem on 3 other machines - including some of the web pages that lock up.
I have run Memtest numerous times and no memory errors are ever demonstrated. No other apps cause this type of lockup. Other web browsers (IE, opera), image editing, video playback.Just scrolling down using Firefox.Event log shows no ocurrences that correspond to the freezes.
Besides using another browser ... any ideas? I am leaning towards a video driver bug but see no reports of such being identified in this model.

If it's only happening in Firefox my feeling would be the problem lies in Firefox and not your machine. Have you tried completely uninstalling and then re-installing it?

All of the data should be on your computer, simply sync it back.
If the update was done via iTunes on the computer, the first step in the process is a backup of the device.
