Lots of goodies seen at the Adobe RoboHelp STC sneak peeks

In three different sessions at the STC conference in
Minneapolis I saw pre-beta demonstrations of RoboHelp "next".
Certainly there's a mind-boggling number of new features. But more
than that, Adobe has spent a lot of time listening to authors about
ways to make their workflow easier. The presentations were made by
Akshay Madan, Adobe Product Manager for RoboHelp. He and his team
have obviously been busy! Here's a recap:
1. What struck me right away was a multiple document
interface (MDI). You can work nicely among any number of topics
that are open and displayed in tabs. I'm glad to see that they are
not planning to throw the baby out with the bathwater. The popular
and friendly Word-like WYSIWYG editor is still central to the main
work area. You still feel like a writer and not a coder (no offense
to programmers).
2. At the same time, the UI is more modern and cleanly laid
out. There are also customizeable toolbars and "pods" that can be
moved around and configured the way the author works. These
configurations can be given a name so for example, an author can
have a layout for authoring sessions and one for editing sessions.
3. These movable panels or pods are handy, but I also like
that you can quickly return to "factory defaults" in case the
layout becomes too fragmented.
4. No <kadov> tags! These much-maligned tags are often
used by competitors to bad-mouth RoboHelp. Well, they'll have to
come up with something else because I saw nice clean,
color-customizable code behind the WYSIWYG editor.
5. There is also Unicode and double-byte support for
something like 34 different languages including Asian and Eastern
European characters.
6. For single sourcing, the author can create multiple TOCs
and name them so that they are easy to use when generating output
for different audiences (or for print vs. online).
7. Help for translators: Because of MDI, a translator can
have an English topic open in a pane side-by-side with a Japanese
topic for easier comparison and editing. Languages can also be
mixed. So, I can have Japanese, Greek or any number of words or
phrases mixed within a topic. The same is true for the TOC, Index
of keywords or Glossary of terms and definitions.
8. Snippets of HTML code make it easy to have chunks of text
and graphics saved for re-use. For example a logo graphic and
copyright statement can be saved and placed in multiple topics. If
you change the logo or text in the snippet, the changes are
populated wherever the snippet has been placed (kind of like
RoboHelp 6's User Defined Variables on steroids).
9. Breadcrumbs offer a nice touch for the user experience
with links that show the user where they are in the heirarchy of
topics.
10. Searching in WebHelp/Flashhelp: When searching, the "hit"
terms are highlighted in a color of the author's choosing. This can
easily be turned off by the user as well.
11. Much improved Framemaker MIF support. Matthew Stern was
at STC and was impressed. "You can import a MIF file directly into
RoboHelp and everything is retained: variables, graphics (including
Flash and Acrobat 3D files), and conditional text."
12. There is support for MS Vista and Office 2007 including
the new XML-based .docx format, (though this was not yet enabled in
the pre-alpha build I saw.)
13. Better Screen capture manipulation within topics.
14. Adobe representatives also said there would be news
posted on the
Adobe TechComm Blog
with invitations to sign up for the beta program when it gets
underway.
After using RoboHelp since 1992, I get caught up in the
feature race like everyone else. But, as Vivek Jain, Group Product
Manager for RoboHelp said, features are not the only thing that
define innovation. Rather he says, "Quality is innovation."
This should put a rest to the "RoboHelp is dead" garbage.
As a user and instructor since 1992 it was very satisfying
and exciting to see these sneak peeks and that Adobe is not only
bringing RoboHelp back to life, but making it a central piece of
the suite of applications that make up the Technical Communications
(RoboHelp, Framemaker, Captivate and Acrobat).
Sneaks peeks were also shown for Adobe Framemaker 8 and Adobe
Captivate 3 as well. The sneak peeks were introduced with the usual
caveats, such as,“The features presented during the
Technology Sneak peek contain proof of concept features and
features in the development pipeline. They are not final for the
next release however we want to take this opportunity to show the
general direction of where we are taking the products.” They
also mentioned that while they cannot comment about release dates,
they "expect to see new releases this year." However, from what I
saw, this pre-alpha build looked stable and rich with the
functionality I've outlined.
It's an exciting time for technical communicators!

Hi all,
That certainly looks like a promising list of possible
enhancements. :-)
I've been putting off switching to Flare for a few reasons
(for me, the user friendliness of the editor doesn't appeal) and
have been hoping that Adobe would pick up on RoboHelp and develop
it further.
RoboHelp's ease of use just seems to allow me to concentrate
more on creating content and that has always been its major
advantage.
Maybe I'm just getting lazy, and I know all software has its
foibles, but spending time fighting with an editor to get the
output to look and behave how I want is not where I want to be.
Even the great RoboHelp kadov debate doesn't bother me so long as
the output works, but, if they can get rid of proprietary tags so
the code is more compliant - brilliant.
The X6 release came across as a first step but not
necessarily a needed upgrade - the stuff they're talking about for
the next release looks much more promising, and definitely feels
like a reason to hang on with RoboHelp a while longer.
By the way, does anyone know if the X6 version still strips
out meta tags from source when you produce output files? The
feature list of X6 didn't prompt me to upgrade immediately, but X5
gives me a world of hurts with metatags, and that could actually be
something that could get me to shell out some dosh for the X6
version rather than wait for what looks like a major new release.
Sorry for being lazy and not installing the trial to see, but
I'm a bit tight on project time so if anyone knows I'd really
appreciate it. Thanks.
PS - something that made me laugh out loud this morning:
"One of the most interesting requests from customers at the
STC Conference Minneapolis was for a migration path from Flare to
RoboHelp. Clearly, some of the customers, who had migrated from
RoboHelp to Flare, want to come back to RoboHelp."
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/robohelp
The MadCap people seem very helpful, but some of their
marketing comes across as too pushy, so that blog really made me
smile. Maybe Adobe are almost 'too'big', but with the new release
talk, it looks like things might be about to get interesting again.
Cheers
Karl

  • Adobe Audition CS6 sneak peek

    Hi everyone,
I invite everyone to take a look at a little sneak peek video of Audition CS6 over at http://adobe.ly/H1hDCa
In this sneak, we show off some of the new functionality implemented for CS6 including Clip Grouping and Automatic Speech Alignment.  (You may have seen some tech demos of the latter at some industry events or online last year.)  Eagle-eyed viewers may find a bit more!

    Edited message with shorter link.

Cosa devo fare? Grazie.

  • Do discussions (threads) in this forum ever get elevated to bug reports seen by the Adobe dev's?

This forum is a fertile source of user feedback for Adobe. Is there a system in place to create tickets or bug reports or something like that out of issue brought up here? Seems like a good idea.

    User to User forum.
Adobe may read some items here. That's up to the development teams. If the dev team sees something and is interested then it may perhaps get logged, But you should never assume anything on the forums is actually logged anywhere but here.
If you've found a bug, you should log it using the feadback link at the bottom of this (or any) page.

  • Adobe RoboHelp 8 is released! TCS2, too

I've been using RoboHelp since 1992 and this is huge. Not
only is Adobe RoboHelp 8 released, but the entire Adobe Technical
Communication Suite 2 (now with Adobe Photoshop!)
The Trial for individual releases as well as the entire TCS 2
suite is ready for download and I certainly recommend you do so.
I've had the priviledge of beta testing the entire suite and
so many items on our "wish list" made it into this release. My
congratulations goes out to Vivek Jain, Akshay Madan, Vivek Kumar,
RJ Jacquez and so many folks who have put their heart and minds
into so many new features. I'm sure our pal across the pond, Peter
Grainge and Robowizard Rick Stone will be chiming in soon with
their take. Hopefully we'll hear from some of the other beta
    testers, too.
There will be much more information released by many folks
I'm sure, but I've collected a roundup of links on my site that you
may find helpful. They are all collected there for quick reference.
I will be putting up some of my own original content as well.
    www.hypertexas.com
There will also be 8 Adobe Captivate demos and the much
requested 60-page Reviewer's Guide similar to last year with
tutorials and such posted soon. I'd suggest giving it a test drive.
Funny. After 3 releases within 2 years and a major Adobe
suite, I don't hear much from those loud naysayers about whether
Adobe is supporting RoboHelp and FrameMaker anymore. I can't
imagine a software company putting more faith and engineering into
this fine group of products for technical authors and elearning
    instructional designers.
    Thanx

    Hey, Jared!
Good news for how to respond to those upgrade questions as
    managers evaluate the new release.
    The
    Adobe
RoboHelp 8 Reviewer's Guide has just been posted. It has 61
pages of details feature-by-feature along with
    Try-It-Exercises
that can be downloaded and used in conjunction with the Reviewer's
Guide to explore and test-drive the new features.
As you follow that link, be sure to download the Reviewer's
Guide PDF so that you can more comfortably play all 7 of the Adobe
Captivate feature/how-to demos which are embedded toward the end of
    the Guide.
    Also the
    Adobe Tech Comm blog
has a summary of the RoboHelp 8 features and more links.
This is definitely a major, major release. The thing I like
about it is that it not only makes the author's job easier, but
also has a lot of features for the end-user - particularly with
navigation and *Search* (always a popular request)
    Thanks,
    John

  • Adobe RoboHelp 8 Reviewer's Guide

For some reason the topic conercing the release of RH8 has
been locked, so here my problem:
I cannot download the Adobe RoboHelp 8 Reviewer's Guide from
either of the given links. It says I must install Flash Player 10
but of course I am not an administrator here on the internet gate
and cannot install anything. Is there a direct link to the PDF?
This is exactly what makes me wonder about the new AIR output
    - developers can install anything but the rights (and time) of
typical end users are limited. They will not go through asking
their IT to install an app just to read a short file.

the Direct link to PDF is

Good Morning.  I'm having a problem using both my Photoshop elements and premiere programs.  I've installed the programs, redeemed my code and entered the serial numbers, and created the adobe log-in.  I am able to open up the organizer without problems, but when I try to open up the photo editor (either by trying to open up the program from the main menu, or right-clicking on a photo in the organizer to edit in elements), the program asks me to sign in to adobe (which I can do and it doesn't give an an "incorrect password" or log-in ID error) then accept the terms and conditions.  When I click to accept the terms and conditions, nothing happens and the editor fails to open.  Everytime I click on the program, I get this same "loop" of signing in and accepting T&C's, but the program fails to open.  Any advice?

Premiere Elements 10 is now 64 bit, but not PSE10.
Take a look at your scratch disk set-up and if you have a spare volume, allocate that first before the C drive. Elements use scratch disks when it gets low on RAM.

good morning , I have installed Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium and I want to uninstall the Adobe Indesign CS5.5. Deactivation of the license is necessary before then reinstall ?

Are you just uninstalling ID, and leaving the rest of the suite in place? You don't need to deactivate to do that.
A suite license does not permit you to install individual components on many different machines so that different users have access to them, if that is what you are contemplating.

  • Adobe RoboHelp 7 and the Adobe Technical Communication Suite have just been posted

    Hi, folks.
The long-awaited Adobe RoboHelp 7 and the Adobe Technical
Communications Suite have just been posted on the Adobe website.
There are 30-day Trial versions that can be downloaded here:
    http://www.adobe.com/ap/products/robohelp/
Follow the link that says "Download the trial". After you
sign in, you can download either the RoboHelp 7 standalone release,
or the Technical Communications Suite which contains these
integrated products: RoboHelp 7, FrameMaker 8, Adobe Captivate 3
    and Acrobat 3D.
If you or members of your team use both RoboHelp and
FrameMaker, I'd strongly advise you take a look at Tech Comm Suite.
It's more than simply a "bundle:" of products. There is real
integration among the apps. Here are details:

For some screenshots and information, check out Peter
    Grainge's website

I will also be posting some Adobe Captivate movies of the new
interface on my website in the next day or two.

You can also read more on the Adobe Tech Comm Blog

These are exciting times. Two releases in one year! I don't
think there's any doubt about Adobe's committment to RoboHelp now
    Thanx,
    John

The first thing I looked at was the upgrade price, which is I
think is pretty reasonable. I may not have made it clear in my
other post that I installed the RH7 trial with RH6 still installed.
I'm pretty sure management will spring for an upgrade, and I don't
intend to use RH6 simultaneously at that point--only while I'm
    doing the trial.
The main thing I'm checking out is the double-byte character
support. One complaint I have there is that in HTML view, Japanese
characters are showing as squares. If I open the same topic file in
Notepad, the Japanese characters show up there, so I know RH7 isn't
really messing up the characters, it's just not displaying them in
HTML view. This still makes it difficult to manipulate Japanese
text in HTML view. Does anyone know if there is a way for these
characters to display in HTML view properly? Should I start a
    different post? Thanks,
    Ben

  • Does the adobe cc run good on the macbook air?

    Hi there!
I want to buy a macbook but i have no idea wich one to choose. I want to run adobe cc on it and im not sure if the air will be good enough. But the pro isn't that cheap, so that' the reason i want to ask about the air. Is it good enough to run adobe cc?

Requirements for Adobe CC for Macinntosh >  Adobe Photoshop CC for Mac, Windows, PC - Tech specs
Either the new 11" or 13" MBAir would work for you but if you can, the more RAM you have installed, the more stable your Mac will run.
As an example, you can order 8GB's of RAM instead of 4GB's >  http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-air?product=MD711LL/B&step=config
For working with graphics, if it were me, I'd buy the 13" air. The more display area the better.
    Beyond that, the 21" iMac >  http://store.apple.com/us/mac/family/imac

It's unlikely Muse will ever have tab stops (since HTML/CSS has no concept of tab stops).
Lists and tables are both highly requested features. It's likely lists will be supported in Muse before tables, not due to prioritization, but due to the fact tables is vastly more complicated and thus more work to design, implement and test.
