Lots of permission errors after a full time machine restore.
So I replaced my hard drive in my MacBook Pro with a 500GB and when in reinstalled leopard i jest did a time machine restore, now if I check the permission i have this long list that it jest can not seam to fix. Here is the list. What should i do about it?

If you uncheck the Show Details" box in DU, you will only see real errors and these will not show up.
Yes they are annoying, and if you read my other post you get more information.

Mail Crashes After a Full Time Machine Restore.
mail doesnt want to open... it tries rebuilding (is that the term) then it crashes.
a full restore was just done since the hard drive died completely and was replaced. restore was done by booting from the snow leopard cd and selecting restore from the utilities menu.
any ideas on what can be done?
there are around 80k messages in mail if that matters.Welcome to Apple Discussions
TimeMachine is supposed to begin deleting "old" files when a SSD or HD reaches ~80% full. Also if TimeMachine is on when you are away from your backup drive for long periods it stores "cached local backup files"
It is essential to keep 10% free space minimum, 15-20% empty space ideal (more doesn't hurt) on your boot drive to keep your machine performing well. -
Macbook Pro will not boot after full time machine restore
I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro, current model with the i7 processor, which I purchased in August 2010. Last week, when I tried to turn it on, it would not boot (just got to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel). I took it in for repair and was told that it had a bad hard drive. The hard drive was replaced and I got the computer back yesterday.
Everything looked good, it turned on, so I did a complete restore from my Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule, following the instructions on this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html
The restore was successful and the computer prompted me to restart. I clicked the button to allow the restart and now I am back to the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. It won't boot again.
I also looked at this discussion (http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10924233) and it sounds like the person here was able to get his computer to work after doing the Time Machine restore in the same process I used, so I don't know what else to do.
I don't live near an Apple store, so it would be great if I could figure this out myself. Thanks for any help!skylaneval wrote:

Can't Boot After New HD + Time Machine Restore
So a couple days ago my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard started making some weird noises and stalling out. Annoyed, I talked for a couple hours with apple tech support which eventually lead me to run an Apple Hardware Test. This test returned the error
"Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.
4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)"
I scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they replaced the hard drive.
After that I got it home and did a System restore from my time machine backup. It finished fine, but when I restarted it got stuck on the grey apple screen with the spinning dial thing.
I called apple back and they had me do a couple things like repair disk, verify disk, and one person had me reboot into this command line mode and type some stuff in. Nothing worked. After that They had me try to reinstall the OS first from archive, and next by erasing the hard drive and doing it. Both times the install fails with a big yellow exclamation point saying that it couldn't install support files and the OS couldn't be installed.
Any ideas how to fix this?
I'm currently trying to restore from my time machine backup again, but I'm not hopeful. Here's what I got - apologies for any formatting peculiarities.
The problem: 10.6.6 mac won't boot after time machine restore to disk.
Further symptoms: Booting with Command-v shows several errors: usually blued and loginwindow collapse with errors from launchd. Errors will be of the style "dyld: Symbol not found: CSSMOID_APPLE_TP_MACAPPSTORERECEIPT" and other CommerceKit / CommerceCore framework errors.
A solution: Your Framework Security library may be an older version (possible cause with Time Machine below). The easiest way to fix this is to find another, working 10.6.6 Mac, and update the Security library on the broken machine.
Identifying if you're affected:
1) Boot the broken machine into "target" mode - hold "Command-t" during boot until the [Firewire|http://itunesu.utah.edu/terms/images/Firewire_Icon.png] icon appears.
2) Connect the broken machine to the working 10.6.6 machine with a firewire cable.
3) On the working machine, the disk of the broken machine should mount.
4) Open Terminal
5) Run "ls /Volumes" - the name of disk you mounted should be there (in this example, we'll use "Macintosh HD".)
6) Typing in the path of the broken machine, run:
<pre>
nm /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
</pre>
(this does a dump of the library, looking for the version value)
If this comes back with the value 22457 (or less?), your Mac is not booting because it does not have the updated version of the Security library, which is required in 10.6.6 since Snow Leopard added the Appstore / Commerce framework.
Fixing if you're affected:
1) First, make sure the working 10.6.6 Mac has a correct version of the framework:
<pre>
nm /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
</pre>
For 10.6.6, this should be at least "22458"
2) *Be extremely careful at this point* - Make sure on the mounted disk (not the machine you are working on!) run the following
<pre></pre>
2a) Make a backup of the broken library
<pre>
mkdir /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
cp /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
</pre>
2b) Copy the working version over the non-working version:
<pre>
cp /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security
</pre>
3) Eject the mounted disk from the working Mac, disconnect the firewire cable, and reboot the "broken" Mac. It should come up.
If it doesn't, you have problem(s) that are probably outside the scope of this. I'd also suggest restoring your original security library that you saved off.
Suspected cause:
It appears that Time Machine never recorded the change to the Security library after the update. If the library hadn't changed, the machine should have failed to boot like it did after restore the moment a 10.6.6 update was applied.
Inspecting the contents of my Time Machine backups before and after updating shows that Time Machine never updated the Security Framework library - why is still not 100% determined, but restoring from it is definitely broken. Combing through the backup databases on my Time Machine disk:
(I upgraded to 10.6.6 on January 6)

After full Time Machine restore, Aperture will not start
Aperture is the only application that won't run after a full restore from Time Machine. Any suggested fix?
I don't remember every using any Aperture CD's. It came installed on the machine and I've upgraded with downloads ever since. If re-installation is the answer, where do I get the download files?
Thanks,
TomHi, you are not the only one to have this problem it happened to me the same thing. It was easy for me to fix because i had the disks i just installed over the top that was it. Without the cd key you are stuck you can try downloading the demo version again but i dont think that will work it may find your key and just install, download at http://www.apple.com/aperture/trial/ . Apart from that you say it was installed what on a new Mac ? if so contact apple and see they should have records of your purchase and help you out.

Licensing Errors after recovering from Time Machine to an external Hard Drive
My internal HD failed and I'm temporarily using an external drive as my primary HD. I loaded all my data from my time machine backup onto the external drive temporarily until my new mac arrives (next week). Now, I'm getting licensing error code 150:30 when I try to open Photoshop. It says rebooting can fix it. It has not fixed the issue. Any recommendations? I need to work on some files now and am stuck.
Thanks!Yes. This is very common. Photoshop must never be migrated or transferred, because the license is tied to the Mac and moving it breaks the license.
The cure is simple. Reinstall using your discs and don't forget to apply the updates. You will be starting at 11.0.0.

Full Time Machine restore hasn't performed any incremental restores.
Hi all,
I suffered a disk failure as a result of a power outage, and couldn't repair the disk, so instead decided to use my TM backup instead. After booting off my Leopard disk, the TM recovery listed only full backups (and said as much that that would be all it's doing). The most recent was from April 2008, but I knew it had been doing incrementals ever since, so I went for it.
It duly recovered to that point, but thing is, it didn't do anything since, so that's a good 8 months of changes undone, so for one thing my iMac that was at 10.5.6 is back now 10.5.2 - so after it had booted, I poked around on the backup disk, and all the incremental stuff is still there (as far as I can tell), right up to an hour or so before the power outage. However, going into TM doesn't show these interim restore points as being selectable.
So I know the content is there on my backup disk, but I don't know how to get at it as TM doesn't seem to want to play. Frustrated, and also very very scared.
So does anyone have any idea what I might be able to do as the next step?
Otherwise I'm going to start crying sometime very very soon.....
Cheers,
MoushuAnswering my own question here, but as I'd found out something I didn't know, I thought I'd pass it on just in case it's of use to anyone else.
With my system restored to April, I went to the backup disk and started poking around - and basically when looking at the backup directories since April 2008 I noticed there wasn't a top-level directory for the main Hard Disk, well, not by the name that was displayed for the HD. And then I remembered that sometime in the past, and yes probably in April, I'd renamed the hard disk. Interesting (and stupid of me for not remembering).
So I redid the full restore, and this time noticed that I was given a choice of disk (names) to recover, and once I'd selected the newly named one, I was able to recover everything to within an hour of the original power outage, so I'm now happy (as is my wife who was convinced we'd lost all our family photos..... but she's now somewhat even more impressed with Macs
So I'm wondering if this discovery could actually be put to advantage in some scenario - perhaps it could be used to define immediately identifiable restore points? eg. rename the Hard Disk just before performing an OS upgrade or some such? Actually, on reflection probably best to leave well alone! -
Why did Mail do an upgrade/import after Time Machine restore?
I just did a full Time Machine restore of my Mac after a hard drive issue (Yosemite). Everything looks OK overall, but when I launched Mail.app, it did a full upgrade/import, as though I'd just upgraded from an earlier version and needed to update the database. Is that normal? Why is it necessary? Thanks!

exclamation point when trying to view an individual image).
The exclamation point is an indication that iPhoto has lost the link/file path to the original file. Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
If you're running a "managed" library try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
IMac won't accept password after time machine restore
Restored 2009 IMac after an HD replacement by Apple. All proceeded smoothly until IMac wouldn't accept my password after the restore from Time Machine. Any ideas will be appreciated.
One thing to try, if you didn't already do this, is to reinstall OS X and use Setup Assistant (which is only available at first boot of a new HD or a reinstalled OS) to migrate your data. A full Time Machine restoration on a new HD can have file permissions problems and/or duplicate User Account problems if Setup Assistant is not used.

Cannot view photos after a Time Machine restore.
Hello,
I am running iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2. I attempted to install the SL 10.6.3 update on 3/31 and all of my CIFS shares become slow and unresponsive to the point they were not useable. I chose to do a full Time Machine restore from the TM backup I had initiated just prior to the 10.6.3 upgrade. Now the last 40 pictures I imported on 3/28 appear in the events but when i click on them I get the screen. I selected the iPhoto Library and exposed the contents of the package and the none of the pictures are in the originals directory. Why are the thumbnails still present but the photos are missing? i thought about performing a library rebuild, but it does not make sense if i cannot find the originals.
Your help is greatly appreciatedNo there's no point in making a rebuild if the originals are not present. As to why this happened? More a question for the Time Machine folks.
Regards

Time machine restore selective intonation vs full installation compromised system
I have some questions regarding the above mentioned issue
I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings
My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings.
1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs
2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area.
Other factors
1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season
2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc
3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?
4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?
5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details
6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?
What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?
Thanking you in advance
PeterThank you for your advice
I tried consulting Telstra premium services and other third party security consultants. I explained my steps and procedures upon each fresh installation and the extent of the hacking and they refused to service me. Additionally Telstra security center replied on the issue of using a proxy server that they only support windows operating systems. Last night an apple consultant told me to obtain the proxy server address and he will guide me through to setting it up. I hope this will resolve the security issue. However I'm not entirely sure. My iPhone was also hacked and 8 GB of data used in 1 day untill I caught on. Freaked me out since I had disconnected from the wifi.
I'm currently installing from flash drive and transferring my information from time machine. I think it's a full restore.
I am investing in a website in a couple of weeks however I'm not currently hosting one on my laptop.
Cheers

Hi guys,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
hope somebody can help me with this issue with TM.
I decided to restore my entire system from a backup I got in an external hard drive ( formatted mac Os Journaled). I didnt exclude any folder from the backup.
Basically using the mac osx installation disk
Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting. -
Gray Screen After Time Machine Restore
I have an iMac running Snow Leopard (most recent update) I recently tried norton antivirus for the mac but found that it slowed down my mac too much so i uninstalled it with the uninstaller. The error i got was a circle with a line thru it at startup. After following steps on disk repair and permission repair i still couldnt get rid of this so I did a restore from time machine. I used the original disk (not the snow leopard upgrade disk) to reach the time machine restore. After trying 2 different backups I'm now getting the gray screen that asks me to restart my imac. I've unplugged everything else. The internal hard drive and ram are all factory.
Any suggestions for a frustrated iMac user ???HI Corey,
There are no Mac viruses in the wild. Unfortunately, you selected the worst A/V software possible. Here's a list of Mac users who installed Norton. http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=norton
After trying 2 different backups I'm now getting the gray screen that asks me to restart my imac.
That's a kernel panic.
Thing to do now is a complete erase and install from your SL disc.

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
Please help if you can.
Thanks
BarryThanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
Thanks for any thoughts... Barry
