Every time i reboot my PPC G5 and verify permissions, this is what I get:

I was going to run software update (for the first time in about 9 months) but now I'm scared that would be asking for trouble.
Any input very much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, BDAqua!
I've always thought that "Verify Disk Permissions" was a peculiar feature to offer - why would one want to know about a permissions problem and not also want to fix it?
Maybe it's just for artistic symmetry with the Verify Disk/Repair Disk options on the right of that DU screen!

  • Java permissions always wrong?

Every time I run Repair Permissions, I get notifications that tons of files in System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/ and System/Library/Java/ have wrong permissions. Disk Utility says it fixes them. But they pop up again next time I repair permisisons.
Any idea how to fix this? Or reinstall Java?

These java messages come up everytime you repair permissions and can be ignored. It has to do with the different way that the OS and Java handle the files. Here is Apples official recommendation:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
You don't disable Java and there is no need to reinstall anything. It is just a harmless annoyance.

  • Repair permissions - always the same ones need repairing (Shockwave)

Each time I do a Repair Permissions after doing an installation (in this case Security 008 update for Intel on my MBP) the same permissions always are repaired and ONLY these. Here's the report I always get:
    Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r--
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Does this seem logical? correct?
I know they are repaired since when I go to do the next installation and begin by Repairing Permissions, nothing needs repairing. Yet I know that after another installation the Shockwave permission differences will rear their heads again.
I do know tht Shockwave is an Adobe thing and I believe it is needed for Quicktime. Could there be something wrong with my Shockwave - or is this typical of Adobe products?
    Thanks,

So, I have now updated the Security Update 008 on the G4 and guess what, the same Shockwave Repair permission issue. It DID NOT appear when I repaired permissions before and after the other updates (Java, QuickTime, Migration DVDCD..., etc) But Shockwave repairs did appear after Security 008.
I found this link to another thread here on Security 008 and Shockwave. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8699716&#8699716
...but, I don't know if this is my problem.
In any case, I just have to update iTunes (only on G4) and Safari (on all my Macs) and then I'm good to go - or at least good to go and figure out what is wrong with Shockwave!
Oh one more update to do - a casual remark I made in reply to another poster has led me to learn that I can update my Appleworks 6 and get it to work in X. Hurrah!

  • Repair permissions always via install dvd?

Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it once a week and with every major install) there are the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And the list seems to get longer.
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to suggest.)
Is there any use doing the task just from the active system or is it really useless?
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my system".
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions repair disk errors as well?
    Thanks for advice!

    Hello-
    I don't claim to be a 'tech expert' but my understandings seem to work for me. If I'm wrong, I'd be just as interested in other opinions as yourself, so FWIW;
Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it
once a week and with every major install) there are
the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And
the list seems to get longer.
The list you see doesn't mean that anything was wrong, just set to something other than what the original permissions called for. If there is a problem you will usually get a red listing indicating a failure of some sort. Although the value of arbitrarily repairing once a week if no OS/app installs or upgrades is questioned by many, the consenus opinion seems to be "it can't hurt".
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and
repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is
that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions
always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to
    suggest.)
As I understand it, you are doing the right thing. Some rather knowledgeable folks actually say this is the 'better' way because your version of the OS has most likely been updated to something newer than what's on the Install CD. IOW, you should Repair Disk Permissions based on the same OS version you are repairing.
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my
    system".
There really isn't that much that needs to be done other than following the suggested 'proactive' approach pertaining to perm. repair, standard cache maintenance (if you run your system 24/7 it's automatic, or you can run the routines manually if your comfortable with Terminal. Otherwise, a utility like OnyX -free- is readily available.)
As long as you aren't constantly downloading, installing & removing every piece of junk you can get your mouse on you should be OK.
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find
disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions
    repair disk errors as well?
Repair Perms doesn't, but the OS does a much better job than Windows, which needs such a utility because it creates the errors in the first place. Disk Utility does include a Repair Disk function which requires starting up from a different boot disk, but it doesn't need to be used as a matter of 'routine' maintenance.
In the event you do run into problems, these Discussions are one of the most invaluable resources available to you. Hi Bob,
Those aren't changes, those are just informational messages. You'll noticed that it does not say "Permissions are wrong" or "Permissions have been changed," which it what you'll get when there is an actual permissions problem.
Here's a Knowledge Base article that explains it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107298
At one time there was a sticky post that said, in huge bold letters, "'We are using special permissions' message can be ignored" (or something to that effect). Personally, I wish they'd remove the informational message from the repair permissions routine, just for all the confusion it causes....
    HTH!

  • A lot of information is wrong on the maps

    Hello,
i have tried to use my GSM  as a GPS and I have seen some problems (nokia 5800 Xpress Music).
To go from Alzate in Brianza  (Italia) to Sirmione (Italia) and a lot of information were wrong : something like 10 roundabout (I am not sure for the word, in French it is "rond point") were missing (he didn't say anything and I had to go straight). There is a road of 30-40 km that was limited (speed) and 90 km/h and everywhere the phone complained about the speed being 70 and not 90 km/h.
More than 4 years ago, one roundabout in Alzate has been created (next to a Benet)  and the map still doesn't have it (I have deleted all the maps and downloaded them again again 3 days before leaving and it didn't change anything the map is not correct).
When we want to go to througn Switzerland we have to allow the pay roads. It we don't enable them the software complains that there is no way to go where we want so we have to choose a point in France next to Switzerland and then travell without pay roads and after that enable pay roads and go through Switzerland and then remove the pay roads outside of Switzerland. It is not very user friendly.
The search function is not very user friendly too.
On other real GPS, I have to choose the country, then I start entering the city name and the program removes the letters not possible depending on the previous ones (for example I type AB and only ABC and ABD are possible then only the letter C and D are enabled) and when there are a few cities left then I have a choice between all the cities (for example I type ABC and there are only 2 cities ABCDRRTTTTTTTRR and ABCEAAAZZZZZZ the program will show the two cities and I don't have to type the remaining letters. It is a lot more user friendly and when I do a mistake in the name I still have a chance to find my city if the beginning is correct.
The same applies to the street name.
There is also some problems in Switzerland : sometimes the GPS thinks that I have left the highway (when there are big mountains next to me) even if there is no way out (or in from the high way. Considering that I was using the highway since more than one hour and for a few kilometers there was no way out, it should have been impossible (with the version of last year I had the problem only once with the lasr version (downloaded 25 may 2011, I had the problem 4 times)
    Thank you
    Marc

    Hello,
Thank you for your time. For the tool to tell when there is an error, in the map, it is not really useable : you have to know where you are exactly and when you drive 200 km, you can't manage to stop everytime there is an error to write where it is (and what the error is).
Perhaps a button on ovi maps to be able write that there is a problem could be fine. Normally, ovi maps should already be able to see that there is a problem because it thinks that I have taken the wrong way (calculating a new way to the destination because it thinks that I have turned on the right instead of going straight). So maps should remember the places and be able to list them (or ask for me if it was a round point or something lmike that).
For the speel limitation, I have put a limit at 0 kh/h upper than the normal. If I drive at 90 kh/h, perhaps it should start wondering if there is not a problem (and so remember the laces or put a button directly to say the speed limitation is 90
For the maps, I have the last version of the software (so all the maps have been deleted and I had to download them again but directly by wifi instead of USB).
The first problem (round point) was there before I even bough my Nokia phone so it can not be the problem too.

  • My Java permissions are wrong can I correct this?

  • 720 x 480 DV sequence export aspect ratio always wrong. How come?

Finally finished editing one of the sequences and want to export and test it,
But no matter what settings in QuickTime Conversion (or just QuickTime Movie) parameters I do (e.g., Size), the exported file always seems to be in the wrong aspect ratio.
I need to have the resulting movie burned on DVD for showing.
    Any tips appreciated.
    Sequence settings are 29.97 fps, 720 x 480, DV/DVCPRO NTSC, NTSC CCIR 601, 48 KHz.
    Thanks.

    Hi guys.
OK, I hate to use the words "I assumed" because you know you are going to get into trouble for saying them! But... I guess this is how the newbies like me learn the difference between assumptions about certain theoretical concepts and their real-world exceptions.
"I assumed" that in FCE/FCP that if I set a sequence's settings in the new "multi-format" timeline, that FCE/FCP would keep that sequence throughout the timeline, and automagically conform whatever clip formats that I put into it, into the sequence's formats. And therefore that I no longer need to worry about the original format of the clips, and just focus on using the sequence's settings as the final assembly format.
(Please advise if this assumption is incorrect).
    Thus, my sequence settings above
    29.97 fps, 720 x 480, DV/DVCPRO NTSC, NTSC CCIR 601, 48 KHz
    combine footage from
    1) HDV camcorder imported into iMovie 08 as 960 x 540 (the "lower resolution" option from iMovie '08 import), 16-bit @ 48 KHz (Big Endian), 25 fps
    2) AVI files (DiVX 512 x 384, MP3 at 44.1 KHz, 23.98 fps)
The AVI DiVX footage is actually television program recorded content. The HDV footage (converted to 960 x 540 resolution by iMovie) is what I shot myself.
What I am doing is trying to cut in my HDV footage (home video) into the TV show's content to create a humorous entertaining video to show family and friends.
So after editing this thing for the past week, I am now ready to test on the target devices (iPod, DVD).
The edited cut plays fine in FCE's preview.
However, on export, the original TV show's content is in the wrong aspect ratio. That is, it is a bit wider, pulled out horizontally. Not significantly wider (e.g., not like 4:3 pulled to 16:9) but just not in the proper aspect ratio. I can't really tell if the superimposed HDV (that is, 960 x 540, not actually 1080i) footage is pulled out too (most of that is shrunk down or otherwise distorted, in the final assembly).
I have spent two days now exporting to many different formats, etc. but none of them seem to work. I just don't understand why. I would have thought that "forcing" the pixel dimensions using QuickTime Conversion's "Size" option would brute-force ensure the resulting video has the exact required dimensions and thus aspect ratio, but it does not seem to be my result.
    Help much appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Hello!

  • Repair disc permissions always finds files to repair

I've been repeatedly running repair disc permissions via disc utility, as my MacBook Pro has become extremely slow. Every time I run the repair button the program will find 'problem' files to repair.
When I select the verify options it will not find conflicts.
Will there always be conflicts the program finds?
Incidentally, the slowness started when I upgraded to 10.5.x. And my new (aftermarket) battery gets extremely hot and won't hold a charge for long (despite priming numerous times).

    Hi,
according to this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 they will be always there and can safely be ignored.

  • Why do permissions always need repair?

Whenever I go to disk utility and ask it to verify my computer's permissions, it always identifies a series of files where permissions need repair.  Why is this?

    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html#Anchor-The-11481
Repair Disk Permissions often produces messages while it is running. These messages are generally of an informational nature and can usually be ignored. Some of these messages may be repeated every time Repair Disk Permissions is run as the receipt for the object in question is forcing the setting of specific permissions, even if no correction is required. Again, these can also be ignored. Only messages indicating the failure of the Repair Disk Permissions process, or the inability to correct permissions on a specific file or folder, should be of concern.

  • Repair Permissions always has something to repair...

When I run Disk Utility and Repair Disk permission, there is always something to repair. No matter if I run twice, is this normal?
This is what it says after repair:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/ Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/ Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar".
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar".
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/libdeploy.jnilib", should be -rwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/libdeploy.jnilib".
    Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls".
    Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/ALRHelperJobs", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/ALRHelperJobs".

These are "normal" and not errors. They are innocuous and may be ignored. They will recur whenever you repair permissions (which should not be required unless you are having specific permissions problems outside of your Home folder.

  • How can I reset a lot of permissions at once?

It seems my system has reset something so admin-level users have read-only permissions for a pantload of files and folders. In every "get info" box the generic "admin" user has read-only priveleges. I can't stop and change permissions every time I want to work with a file.

Use the 'gear' icon at the bottom of the Get Info window (for a folder) and select 'Apply to enclosed items...'. Use this with care because it will make all the files match and may remove some permissions required. I recommend doing this only for items in an individual's user folder and not at the drive or system level.

  • New SSD, but LOTS of Permissions Problems

I have installed a new SSD drive alongside my 1.5TB spinning drive on my 24" 2009 iMac 2.93GHz. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to move my everything except my User account over to the new 60GB SSD.
I originally assigned the User's folder on the old drive using the Users & Groups User/Advanaced Options window to change the Home directory, but that resulted in unrecoverable crashes and I had to reinstall the OS three times until I finally left my old files on the old drive and just ran my Applications on the new drive, keeping everything else on the old drive, but not connected as a "user".
However I've run into a ton of permissions problems with every file I open and many programs that access thos files and have done this so far to fix it:
Run resetpassword on both drives in terminal when I rebooted to the Mac OS X install disk (Lion).
Run Drive Genius' repair permissions utility.
    Run Disk Utility's repair permissions.
I continue to have issues with every file I use on the old drive, so I'm at a loss to fix this in place. I did read somewhere that moving your files to another drive, then reformatting then moving back can by default fix any permissions issues, so am considering this as a fix:
Move files on the old 1.5TB drive, folder-by-folder to an external drive.
    Reformat the "old" internal 1.5TB.
Recopy everything on that external back on to my 1.5TB drive.
Run Repair permissions on both drives.
This isn't fast or elegant, but I want the issue fixed. I don't want to have to open "info" on every file I use and check and change every file permission before I can use it!
Any input on whether or not this is a real fix or is there a better one?
    Thanks!

May not have anything to do with your issue but often
the master disk image loaded on your hard disk before
it leaves the factory has old (and/or odd) bits of
code on it. Plus the transfer is done as fast as
possible. Last they do not zero and erase the drive
before putting the image on it, so if there are bad
sectors they may not be marked as such and may be in
    use (& corrupted).
As you are having trouble get your data off as best
you can, erase AND ZERO the drive, repartition, and
only then re-load from your Install DVD.
Takes extra time but better safe than sorry...
Well, I have no real means to do this now as I sold off my G5 already
Also, how do you zero it?
When I reformatted my G5, I picked the option to wipe and reinstall, yet when I did, the drive name and bluetooth names were still my old ones! - Not encouraging.
In any case, its clear I have a software problem, so looks like I'll need to burn a zillion dvds and start over .
    Thanks.
