Lots of Permissions Need Repairing?

I'm fairly certain this is normal, but figured I'd run this by the world...
Is it normal to have alllllllll  these damaged permissions?

Permissions repair complete

Apple has a note about this:
Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Just trust that repair permissions did its job.
But the real question here is why are you bothering with repair permissions in the first place?  For most cases it is unnecessary.

  • 10.4.6 - no permissions need repair?

alright, maybe this isn't a problem, per se, but it is odd. i've noticed on three computers so far, after updating to 10.4.6, repairing permissions finds nothing to repair! it used to always need to change some widgets permissions or dvd player or some other thing, every time. have they fixed something? or... is it missing something...?

    It's a gift from the Apple Gods & Goddesses . . .
The only time you'll see anything now, is when there's an actual problem which cannot be repaired. Thank Goodness !!!! Those messages were very upsetting to all those who felt that each message was an error, and there were ton's of things wrong, when in fact, nothing was wrong. Normally, they were just notations. Now everyone can relax !!!

  • Permissions not repairing with Disk Utility

I booted off my internal backup drive to run Disk Utilities on my main drive as I've been having some display problems and wanted to check for viruses and check the integrity of my drive. No viruses, disc verifies OK, but I had a lot of permissions needing repair, which I did.
I then cleared history and ran Verify Permissions again and even though the repair said all permissions were repaired except the last SUID file, these 7 came back. I ran repair again. Disk Utility said all except SUID were repaired like before. Ran verify again and they same 7 plus SUID showed up needing the same repairs Disk Utility said it fixed twice before.
Is this indicative of a serious problem? Any ideas how to fix them? Do I even need to?
    Have MacPro1,1 - Running OSX 10.6.7, 8 GB RAM
    Thanks,

Thanks re permissions. I was going to try DiskWarior, to see if it could repair them, but won't now.
For viruses I ran MacScan. Only found some tracking cookies and removed them.

Yeah, that advice is all over the place. It certainly won't hurt. But the benefits of doing it are, IMO, greatly exaggerated.
Repairing permissions can be a useful task if you are having a problem that can be traced to incorrect permissions on an application, folder, or file that is installed with the Mac OS X installer. Because those are the only things (and only a subset of those at that) that repairing permissions fixes.
But somewhere along the line, people starting using Repair Permissions as some sort of magic pill that can fix any ailment. Computer slow? Repair permissions. Screen flickering? Repair permissions. E-mail message won't go on the trash? Repair permissions. That advice is handed out (ill-advisedly IMO) on a daily basis on these forums. And, of course, there are those who advocate repairing permissions both before and after any system update. IMO that advice too is based on urban legend. I never do it.
If you do repair permissions, and it finishes with "Permissions repair complete", then it's done and you don't need to worry. The "errors" it returns are not errors at all and nothing needs to be fixed. They're just "messages", not errors. If you don't want to see them, simply uncheck the "show details" box.
If Repair Permissions finishes with "permissions repair failed", or "the "underlying task reported failure on exit", then worry.

  • Why do permissions always need repair?

Whenever I go to disk utility and ask it to verify my computer's permissions, it always identifies a series of files where permissions need repair.  Why is this?

    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html#Anchor-The-11481
Repair Disk Permissions often produces messages while it is running. These messages are generally of an informational nature and can usually be ignored. Some of these messages may be repeated every time Repair Disk Permissions is run as the receipt for the object in question is forcing the setting of specific permissions, even if no correction is required. Again, these can also be ignored. Only messages indicating the failure of the Repair Disk Permissions process, or the inability to correct permissions on a specific file or folder, should be of concern.

  • Why did so many permissions need to be repaired after Mavericks?

Here's my story regarding Repairng Permissions; its seems a repair is the only thing keeping my Mac running.
I've a Mac Book Pro 15" Spring 2011, been doing the upgrades etc ever since, but after Mavericks upgrade I was having issues never seen before with my Apple upgrades.  In short after upgrade I was getting gray screen, blue screen etc. Random screen splits with horizontal lines.
Took many tries to reboot, safe reboot, clear pram, etc.  I ran EtreCheck got rid of lots of things. I broke out disk and ran full hardware test - all good.  I have reinstalled OS X, as well as done two clean reinstalls of everything.  Even after that, I would still crash from time to time, with gray and blue screen either after re-awakening or simply opening iPhoto.
Nothing in panic or crash logs except this: 12/29/13 1:49:17.286 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[294]: (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self
Once I finally got in, I went to disk utiloity and ran verify permissions and saw many issues, then ran repair disk permissions.  I wanted to keep the log of all the changes and went to print and save as PDF - it was over 521 pages of permissions fixed! I didn't bother saving that file, I wish I did now.
I've been runing about 2 days without blue, gray crash so I am hoping that fixed it - but if this was a plane, no way would I fly it.
My question:  After the both reinstalls and clean installs, why would so many permissions need to be repaired?

For some reason, after I run repair permissions in Disk Utility, I can run it again, and the same problems are "corrected."
    That's a waste of time.
Is Disk Utility actually doing anything?
Basically, nothing on second or subsequent runs when the function is used repeatedly.
It seems like every time I run repair permissions the same problems are present. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Why is  my DiskUtility no longer finding any permissions which need repair?

In the past 4-6 weeks Disk Utility, both on my iMac and my MacBook always gives me a clean bill of health when I use it to verify/repair permissions.
In the past, I alwyas have had something which had to be repaired.
Bothers me that Disk Utility finds nothing. I install, uninstall lots of software and would expect permissions need tweaks after installing Security patches and such
IS it possible that a recent OS patch (security or other) has affected Disk Utility?
It just does not seem right that suddenly no permission needs repair.
Any one else finding that they , too, now always have clean bill of health with permissions, using Disk Utility?

I think some of the gurus to whom you refer need an education.
We all recommend repairing the hard drive and permissions before installing new software not because it's a requirement but because it's a precaution against poorly maintained systems. Doing so will help prevent problems for users who simply don't know what they are doing or never maintain their computer properly. Even toasters need to be cleaned once in a while, if you get my meaning.
Recently Mac World ran a couple of pieces on the subject that you should find interesting reading:

The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

Yesterday I ran Disk Utility and came up with hundreds of permissions that needed repair.  I hit the "repair permissions" button and waited until it said they were repaired, but just for fun I hit the "verify permissions" button again, and they all came back!  I did this several more times and every time I would hit "verify permissions" I would get the same list.  What's up?  I've always suspected diagnostic programs, but this is Apple's own!

Ignore them. They aren't errors. You will keep seeing the same ones. As long as you get the message "Permissions repair complete," you're OK.

  • Repair permissions - always the same ones need repairing (Shockwave)

Each time I do a Repair Permissions after doing an installation (in this case Security 008 update for Intel on my MBP) the same permissions always are repaired and ONLY these. Here's the report I always get:
    Permissions differ on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences, should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r--
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave 10 Preferences
    Does this seem logical? correct?
I know they are repaired since when I go to do the next installation and begin by Repairing Permissions, nothing needs repairing. Yet I know that after another installation the Shockwave permission differences will rear their heads again.
I do know tht Shockwave is an Adobe thing and I believe it is needed for Quicktime. Could there be something wrong with my Shockwave - or is this typical of Adobe products?
    Thanks,

So, I have now updated the Security Update 008 on the G4 and guess what, the same Shockwave Repair permission issue. It DID NOT appear when I repaired permissions before and after the other updates (Java, QuickTime, Migration DVDCD..., etc) But Shockwave repairs did appear after Security 008.
I found this link to another thread here on Security 008 and Shockwave. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8699716&#8699716
...but, I don't know if this is my problem.
In any case, I just have to update iTunes (only on G4) and Safari (on all my Macs) and then I'm good to go - or at least good to go and figure out what is wrong with Shockwave!
Oh one more update to do - a casual remark I made in reply to another poster has led me to learn that I can update my Appleworks 6 and get it to work in X. Hurrah!

  • Illegal name in verification - drive needs repair, owner needs advice!

    Hi,
    I have a problem with my ibookG4!!
I am relatively unfamiliar with operating system mechanics and only discovered the disc utility options because of reading similar issues amongst these threads!
I have been running fine until this week, when my clock reset itself to 1989 and now the mozilla firefox keeps freezing on me.
    I ran disc utility verification.
    it stated:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    ,0)
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
I tried to repair it (using the disc utility), but it stopped before the end. Initially i had a lot of "iTunes / widget user name" disagreements that were simply fixed. The "illegal name" line was in red... meaning that there lies the problem?
I have no idea what that could mean or how to remedy it.
Also, if the start up disc is inserted and i fix it from there... (now please excuse me for sounding dumb) will i lose any of my files from the hard drive (e.g final cut projects)?
Im just not experienced enough to know how to sort this out and its probably really simple!
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    monster x
(and thanks to cornelius for recommendation to here...)

You shouldn't lose anything with this procedure. 1st insert install disk and let it load. then restart and hold down the c key to run off disk. go through the couple of windows that the disk asks, like language, and you will see at the top of screen, disk utility. choose that and 1st repair permissions. After that then go to repair disk and repair until there are no more errors in red. may or may not need a couple of tries. If all is well then go to preference panel, open startup disk icon, and choose your hard drive as the start up disk, and restart.

  • Mac Pro Slow Shutting down Disk Ut says needs repair

    Hi hope someone can help,
My mac pro has been taking a long time to shut down recently and this morning when i booted up all i had was a black screen with my mouse pointer (really weird).
I used Disk Utility to "verify disk" and it said that repairs were necessary. Here's the log:

Disk Utility stopped verifying “Aygies Raid” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit

I have a clone of my drive on an external drive so i booted from that i tried to repair permissions on mac pros drives but it said repairs weren't needed, Log:

    Explanations:
Folder Depth: This number indicates how many folders are nested inside each other. If a disk contains only three
folders and Folder A is inside Folder B and Folder B is inside Folder C, then this disk has a maximum folder depth of
three. Folders nested too deeply can cause software compatibility problems.
Property List: This is a standard file format for storing data and is often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .plist file extension. Corrupt property list files can cause system instability.
Resource Data: This is an older file format for storing data and was often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .rsrc file extension. Corrupt resource data files can cause system instability.
System Symbolic Link Files: These are files used by the operating system that are similar to aliases. If these files are
damaged it may prevent startup or cause system instability.

Went back to Disk utility and now it says that my hard drive doesn't need repair! whats going on! can anyone help?!
    Thank you

    Two things off the top:
128MB are GUID partitions that are not user volumes.
There is also a 200MB EFI partition as well.
Drive Genius needs to get their program updated.
You need to work from an "emergency" boot drive to repair your boot drive, RAID or no. I hope you are and not from CD or DVDs.
Forget about Permissions. They are very minor. They only have to do with ownership and security and based on what is in
    /Library/Receipts
Trying to verify? all you want to do is repair and rebuild.
If you ran DU and DW and did repair and rebuild and WROTE NEW DIRECTORY and the problem remains, erase and restore, or...
+I am useless with RAID and have no idea...+
Don't use it except to test, learn, experiment with. But not for system drive.
Above I asked, "are these a matched pair of drives" ie, same make, (looks like same size), vendor, model? they should be. Less chance of trouble if nothing else.
ON the boot volume, do a Get Info when you click on the drive, look for "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" and make sure it is NOT CHECKED. It can't be to repair permissions and be bootable.
The underlying cause of disk errors may be marginal or bad RAM. Test those FBDIMMs. Run Apple Hardware Test and Memtest (even Microsoft uses Memtest for Vista).
Drives rarely break. Systems do. Directory and btree catalogue and volume information blocks do.

  • A crash, volume needs repair?

Hi, I have no idea what has happened. It's embarrassing but I can't even tell you accurately what OS X I was using but all my software was up to date. When I try to open applications like Safari, it says "you cannot use the application Safari with this version of Mac OS X" The same goes for iTunes and other apps. Some programs just quit unexpectedly when I try to open them. Seems like it reverted back to a very old operating system I didn't even know existed. Even the JPEGs open with a different program I don't use. When I click "about this mac" it says the memory capacity is 512 MB when I know it usually 250 GB and I currently have 25 GB free. I tried Disk Utility and the error messages read exactly as followed: Volume bitmap needs minor repair. Invalid volume free block count (it should be 6873884 instead of 6873859) The volume Machintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit. First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying "Machintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit. HFS volume checked volume needs repair.
I stopped messing with it because I have no idea what to do and I don't want to make it any worse. I have installation disks buried in storage but I'll get replacements if that's what it is. I'm panicked. Please help

Welcome to Discussions - boot from your install disc and use Disk Utility to repair your volume. If that fails, get hold of DiskWarrior and use that.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
When you have finished, reboot and repair permissions from your hard drive.

I have a Win7Pro SP1 PC locked down with a Group Policy as it is a public facing PC. PDF fillable forms cannot be completed when logged on as the restricted user. The forms work as a normal user. What are the user requirements/permissions needed to fill forms?

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

Why are Java files always listed as needing repair in Disk Utility?

X423424X's question is pertinent too: you usually need to repair permissions after some major upgrade or update, not on a regular basis. Is there a particular reason why you'd often try to repair permissions? Here's more on the subject.
Repairing permissions after an update or upgrade is harmless, but I would question the need to do it even there. The Apple update itself should set the correct Permissions. I still do this, really as a hangover from Tiger days -- not certain it was really ever needed there either -- and because it's a habit that's hard to kick, but it's never found anything to repair...but for one buggy exception, which was the 10.5.8 Combo update. Running it once and then repairing Permissions created a real error. It was discovered the Combo needed to be run twice back to back and then Permissions repair. In fact, one would have been better off not running Permissions for that update to begin with. There it wasn't harnless.

BTW, even Flash updates, which always used to set incorrect Permissions, are coming in clean these days.

  • 'Disk Needs Repair' warning on base station w/ Hitachi 2TB USB Drive

Trying to use my new 2TB USB Hitachi XL Desk Drive (mac formatted) on my extreme base station. Drive works perfectly on my MacBook Pro but when I plug it in to the base station both with & without a powered usb hub, airport utility says 'Disk Needs Repair' & amber light flashes. Disk shows up in utility as a 1.8TB Hitachi but disk title is not listed. Other drives work just fine on the base station. Not sure what else to try at this point.

Connect the drive back to your MacBook Pro.
Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on your drive on the left side of the window to highlight it, then click Repair Disk over on the lower right of the window. May take 30-90 minutes or so depending on how much data is on the drive.
You may also need to click Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility as well.
IF...you are using the drive for Time Machine backups, Apple does not support backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. You will have issues if you try this.
