LOTS of photos -- tips or suggestions?

I am soon going to have over 20,000 pics in iphoto 5, does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to handle that many photos? I just had to add them all back since iphoto dumped them all from its library (not sure why).

The main tip I will give you is to not keep that many photos in one library.
Break it up into Years and it will be easy to do the suggestion I gave you in your other post.
You can create a new library by launching iPhoto with the Option key and following the prompts. You also use the Option key at launch to switch between the libraries.
Using the add to library command, navigate to the Year folder to import all images from that year.
Launch iPhoto with the Option key to create a new library and then add the next year folder.
You can break up the library any way you want but doing it by Years will be sure to keep having duplicates in the libraries.
Oh, and don't forget, you can manage your libraries with either of these two programs (there may be others)

Does LR 3 slow down when there's a lot of photos?

I've been adding a ton of photos into my catalog recently (I now have 23 thousand photos) and I'm wondering if having a lot of photos in my catalog will slow Lightroom down.
I've been recently worried about the speed of LR because it has been slow to respond lately, and It's now consuming 850MB of ram when I open a 14Mp Jpg without any adjustments of any kind.

Some has slow process when a large number of photos are available but I think it's most related to their OS configuration ? Actually it would be a good idea to "optimize" the LR configuration : good RAM value is 4 Gb, memory cache have to be as large as possible, HD's (not all on same disk : system and pictures), SSD and/or RAID aso.. Minimum values indicated by Adobe are really the VERY LOWEST to use. And as other already told : optimize your catalog regularly.
You'll find on many sites good tips to make the best possible configuration, avoiding in principle a slow response of soft.
An experienced professional photographer, Martin Evening, has published a (cheap) book about LR3; it could be considered as one of the LR3 bibles. There are many tips given, difficult to transmit in detail on a forum like this one.
I never have found any problem with slow down of LR. But my biggest library, personally I use several libraries, is under 40000 !

Photo Storage - any suggestions please?

My G4 is nearly five years old and going strong. I take a lot of photos. However, I can't store my photos on iPhoto because it slows up so much, so I have been saving them to CD, but that isn't satisfactory for a number of reasons - I lose or can't locate the relevant CD and even when I can access it, I can never find the photo I want.
There must be a better way of storing and archiving large quanities of photos, any suggestions please?

There are several options. Since you are looking to be able to retrieve them with iPhoto at a later date you might give this a try.
1 - select multiple rolls until iPhoto says you've got maybe 550MB (if you're using CDs) or 6G (for DVDs).
2 - go to the Share->Burn Disk menu option and follow the instructions.
This will create a disk that can be mounted in iPhoto at a later time (See example) so you can view them, copy back to the library in case you need to print, etc. Once assured they are on the disk and OK you can delete the rolls from the library. One warning, currently iPhoto 5 has a bug that loses the keywords on these disks. It's a minor issue but just be forewarned.
That method seems to fit what you want to do. Now regarding your aging G4. Like me it could crash at any time. If the budget permits get an external Firewire HD for backup purposes. I've got one that is much bigger than my boot drive so I've cloned my system to it as well as backup my library and other important document on a daily or routine basis with Synk. If my boot drive gives up the ghost I can boot off the external until I get the boot drive fixed or replaced. FW drives are pretty affordable these days and are excellent insurance. I prefer the self powered so I can easily turn them off when I don't need it. It doesn't run all the time.
There are other methods of backing up just the jpg files. If that's what you're really interested in post back and we can discuss that. Good luck.

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

Decide which device will be changing accounts. On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud. The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom). Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it.

If you have a Mac you can delete them with Preview. To do this, connect your phone, launch Preview, go to File>Import from iPhone..., then select the photos you want to delete and press the Delete key.

If both computers are on the same network, you can share the files from the Windows host using SMB and mount the share on the Mac. Otherwise, the Mac should be able to read (not necessarily write) any storage device formatted in Windows.

Actually, you can email up to 5 at a time from the Photos app. Select any more and the email share option will not appear.
If you explain why you need to email large numbers of photos, we might be able to offer an alternative.

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only, as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? At that size it sounds like you have inserted lots of photos at too large a size and resolution.
Especially for a year book style project, first determine your image sizes and crop and fix the resolution to 300 dpi, then drag them into the publication. Pages does not use external references to files and rapidly grows to quite large size unless you trim and size your images before placement.
