Lots of questions about PowerBook 5300

Hello.
everybody knows that Apple computers are the best machines.
At home i've got an iMac 21' and old PowerBook 5300.
i've got some problems with the last one.
First - when i turn on it i see a smiling Mac, but after Mac is sad and there is two mistakes (i think so) 0000000F and 00007FFF.
i try to install a sistem on it mac os 7.5. but have some problms with it.
i find it here   http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/   but what to do with it i can't understand, even using some topics on apple site.
on the Mac's HDD i found folders with images of 7.5 but i dont know how o make a flopy disc of it.
I really want to regenerate him and i hope you can help to me with this problems.

Because the PowerBook 5300 does not have a CD-ROM drive, it can be more difficult to install the system software on the hard drive.  With only a floppy drive, you need to find a Mac OS installer on floppy disks having the capability to boot the computer.  Unlike an Apple retail boxed OS 7.5.3 installer set on floppy disks which can boot the computer while you install the software, the 19-part Mac OS 7.5.3 download that you found is used to create 19 floppy disks to install the OS, but it cannot boot the computer.  Each of the 19 segments will fit on a Mac-formatted 1.44 MB floppy disk, and then you insert each of the floppy disks to copy all segments to the computer's hard drive.  Double-clicking the 1st partial file segment will create a folder with the Mac installer program, but while you are doing this, the hard drive must already have a working OS installed on it, to run the computer.  I don't know where you live, but you might check for a Mac User Group in your area and see if they have an older Mac OS installer set on floppy disks.  The PowerBook 5300 can also run OS 7.5.5, 7.6, or 7.6.1, any of which do not require a lot of installed memory to run.

  • A lot of questions about my MacBook Air

I am really new to re-using Apple computers. The last time I used an Apple computer was back in 1987 when the school and my family had Apple IIGS computers. I have been using PC's which reqiure Microsoft. I a lot of have questions (10 questions) about my MacBook Air and I hope you good people can and will help me.
    Product: MacBook Air
Operating System: Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
    1) I Downloaded MacKeeper because I was fooled. I had a bad feeling just before I Downloaded it and I should have listened to my heart. However, I didn't buy it or fully Install it. It was like a test run and then they wanted me to pay almost $100 for it. Thankfully, I didn't because I read it is Malware. I spoke with an Apple Tech at Apple Care and he helped me get rid of it (or so we think). I don't see it anymore on my computer. I read it can slow down your computer. How can you tell if it's really off of the computer?
    2) When I open "Finder" and I see that there are people Sharing my computer with me. I went into AirDrop and it reads, "Other people can see your Mac as (my name) MacBook Air when their computer is nearby." I bought a HotSpot and while it's turned on and I selected it as my WI-FI connection I thought it would  get rid of these people, protect what I type, me, my items, computer, etc. But it didn't.
I didn't know that I have to buy a exteral CD and/or DVD Player in order to connect to the brand new Modem and Router in one by NetGear. I am so used to PCs and the CD/DVD Players being built inside.
The people at Apple Store told me that there is an internal modem inside, but I don't know how to find it and what to do then.  Should I use a Firewall?, An AntiVirus, AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, etc. Apple Care tech told me I don't need to get an AntiVirus.
    3) Is there a new kind of Wireless Modem and Router that doesn't require a CD-ROM?
    4) When I travel or fly and I am not close to home I was told by Best Buy and Sprint that I had to buy a mobile HotSpot to use the computer (WI-FI) safely. As I typed, I have one. But it's pretty expensive and only gives me 1 hour and 15 minutes per day to Stream. What can I do to use this computer safely Online when I am out of range from a Modem and Router? What do people do when they travel on airplanes?
    5) This compter won't let me use "Raid." I think you have to have a newer version. I hard about Raid on the radio from Leo (can't recall his last name) who's a Tech expert.
    6) Should I buy a ZipDrive? Apple Store Tech told me that I didn't need a ZipDrive. I just remember the episode of HBO's "Sex and The City" when Carrie looses everything because her copy crashed. Now, of course, I know that's a fictional show, but with PC's and Microsoft I have lost everything when it crashed, frooze up, etc. I know there's iClouds. I heard about Carbonite, but I have read the Pros and Cons about it. Mostly they are Cons about it. I just don't want to do anything wrong and mess up this computer.
    7) Should I buy a new Printer/Copier/Scanner because mine is an HP. It's not new, but it works. I even have a CD-ROM for Macs. What about the new product called, "Neat"?
    8) Is there a special product that I should buy to do Online Banking and/or other important stuff?
    9) I saw and read about iWork in the Apps Store and it sounds cool. I still have alot of friends and colleagues who still use Microsoft. Is iWork good to use? Should I Download it from the Apple Apps Store or can a buy it at Apple? Is there another Word Processing Program that is great and user friendly and will work with Macs and PCs?
    10) Should I Update the OS with OS X Mountian Lion Pro from the Apple Apps Store or buy it at Apple Store?
In advance, I wish to thank you in this Apple Support Communites for your help.  Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

    1) Here are instructions for removing MacKeeper. Since it mostly consists of manually looking for folders and specific files, if you follow the instructions you either fail to find what you are told to find (because your AppleCare guide gave you complete instructions which you followed) or you'll find some additional files that need to be replaced.
2 & 3) I assume you are looking at the sidebar of a Finder window and seeing Shared and computers under it. Those are computers that you can potentionally share. To do so you'd need an account on their computer and a password. They are not sharing your computer.
AirDrop allows you to create an adhoc network for filesharing and it only functions when you have selected the AirDop item in the SideBar. Actually doing that merely announces to computers in the same network node that your computer is available for a file to be sent to. Even then you have to explicitly allow the file to be downloaded to your computer. Similarly you'd be able to see other computers with AirDrop selected and be able to send them a file - which they'd have to accept.
The only reason your NetGear Router comes with a CD is to install and run their 'easy' step by step configuration program. It can also be done manually with a browser. Read the manual to find the IP address you must enter to access the router's configuration menu. Apple's WiFi routers don't require a CD to install the software because the configuration software is already on your computer.
I do have my firewall turned on. AntiVirus software isn't a bad idea - I use Sophos having tested it for a review for our local User Group and I found I liked it better than ClamAVx which is what I'd been using before. Both are free.
    4) I think you were scammed by Sprint and BestBuy. I use hotel, coffee shop, and restaurant WiFi spots and have for years. However, because they can be unsecured, I do not shop online or bank when I'm using them. I also use 1Password and don't reuse passwords so even if a sniffer should grab an account and password that's all it would get - one account.
    5) Raid doesn't really make sense with a MacBook Air - a RAID involves 2 or more disks being used as if they were one.
    6) Zip drive? No. External hard drive - yes. It isn't a question of if a computer's hard drive will malfunction, it is when. OWC has a nice selection of external drives and the Mac has a built in backup system called TimeMachine. Due to the way TimeMachine works, I've found that your TimeMachine drive should be at least twice as large - and preferably 3-4 times as large as the data you are backing up.
    7) if your printer works and it has Mountain Lion drivers, why replace it?
    8) Online banking is done with a browser - Use Safari or FireFox
    9) If trading files with Windows users is important Mac: Office is your best bet. If not, iWork, Mac:Office, or LibreOffice are all good possibilities.
    10) you can only buy Mt Lion via the App Store.

  • Lots of Questions about the Creative MuVo Slim 256MB MP3 Pla

<SPAN>Hello, I'm thinking of buying it...but I got lots of questions that i want it answered first before I buy it.
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>. How long does the battery last? Like would I even need to replace the rechargeable li-ion battery every year? month? never?
<SPAN>2. I know I can only charge the battery via <SPAN>USB<SPAN> cable, so a<SPAN>pproximately how long is the wait time until it has fully recharged?<SPAN>
<SPAN>3. Is it possible to recharge using an adapter instead of the <SPAN>USB<SPAN>? Because I found it easily.<SPAN>
<SPAN>4. Do you think this is worth buying? Or should I wait on a future release? <SPAN>
<SPAN>5. Is the voice recording clear? And can you record 5-0 feet away?<SPAN>
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>Thank you very much for your time in answering my questions.

. Lithium Ion batteries last at peak performance for about 3 years, or 300-500 charges, whatever comes first. They will still work after this for several years, but at reducing performance.
    2. Sorry, not sure...
    3. Again, not sure. You're taking a risk that the adapter is compatible.
    4. Only you can make that decision. Just look at this and the other players and compare the features and price.
    5. The in-built microphones are not great quality, and really only good for recording interviews and meetings, that type of thing.

  • Question about Powerbooks

I've never used a PowerBook, or any laptop for that matter.
I'm just starting a busines, and need something so I can work away from my home office. I don't have much funds yet, so this is the only book I can afford (barely) right now. Does anyone use this machine w/ Photoshop? I'm wondering if the 512MB RAM will be enough?? I mostly use Photoshop CS2 and the internet.

if you are doing heavy work on the laptop alone, think about ordering your PowerBook with a larger hard disk.
Good to know. Most of my heavy work will get done on my home computer( PowerMac G4) most of the time. But, I have people wanting pictures for the holidays and I will be out of town for two weeks over Thanksgiving, away from my computer...scary. So, I need something that will enable me to work on these pics and send them to the printer. Otherwise, while at home, my PowerBook will serve as my extended desktop, not my workhorse.
with the image size like yours, sure you can work on 12inch PB, wuth 1.5gb, but how slow would it be? Take simple raw image from Canon's pro camera 1dMark2 which is just around 12mb, and you will spend some time waiting for the computer to finish its tasks, with 200mb images, you need power mac g5. Even mostly used for graphics, powerbooks are rarely used for more then website design and on site photography (crop adjust send to your office for morning edition), btw, what can you possibly do for image to become 200mb file?bilboards by freeways? just curious.
That's what I'm trying to figure out, if it will be able to handle my images.
As it is, I currently work on a 800MHz PowerMac G4 w/ 1.25GB RAM and two HD's. It seems to handle my images just fine.
How do my images become 200mb? Easy, I start out w/ a RAW image out of my 20D that's 16-bit, and I have an adjustment layer for everything(level, curves, color balance). And duplicate layers-I have a touch-up layer, a sharpening layer, a channel mixer layer for B&W conversion. If I do any creative services like color accent, that's another layer. That way I if I don't like something or want to change it later only one layer is effected. Does that make sense? Maybe I need to review my workflow...lol

  • Lots of questions about Sound Cards and DJ'ing

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a MacBook. First some background. I play in a wedding/corporate band who occasionally hires a DJ to play in between our sets. Sometime I just bring out my Ipod and plug in to avoid this cost. Most DJ's we use bring out a laptop and just plug directly into our PA. I started looking into laptops so we could cut out The DJ cost all together.
In my research I found that Mac's seem to be the Laptop of choice for most DJ's. My question is about the sound card inside the Macs. Is it a good quality. Would I need to upgrade in order for it to sound good going through a PA system. What are the audio outputs for Macs? As I said before I sometimes just use my Ipod and that sounds pretty good but its hard to search for things etc. And which Macbook do you think I should be looking at. The Pro or the regular?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Lot of question about technical communication suite 5

I have a Mac, Parallels with Windows 8 for simulation, Creative Cloud 6, Technical Communication Suite 5. I use the Mac except when an application is available only for windows.
Is there a way to import in Frame PhotoShop and Illustrator documets with automatic link when those programs reside on the mac? (or do I need to install them on Windows)
Creative Cloud allows 2 computers. Is it the same for Tech Comm?
Can the programs in tech comm use the cloud?
Captivate in tech comm can work on the mac. Is there a way to install it there?
Tech Comm install a lot of programs on windows. Are they documented somewhere?
Is there some good tips about docummentation?
Is there a way to reinstall an application? Acrobat did not install corectly on windows (I have it as part of creative cloud on the mac)

The TechComm Suite is Windows only and is blisfully unaware of the Creative Cloud. It does have connectors to Photoshop and Illustrator for the FrameMaker component. As per all other Adobe products, you can have two activations on a product.
You need to run all of the TCS apps in a VM (Parallels, Bootcamp, etc.) if you want any interactions between them.
Consult the Help for the available documentation (there are downloadable PDFs of the User Guides). However, to learn the applications it it recommended to refer to third-party resources.
The TCS version of Captivate is Window only.
For TCS purposes, install the Acrobat version from the TCS in the virtual enviroment.

  • A lot of questions about sync

    Hello,
    1) First, I want to view the tab opened on my firefox for android with my firefox for PC, how do I do that ?
    ''Solved'' it's under 'history'.
    2) Then is there a limit to the number of tabs synchronized because I don't see all the tabs opened on my PC, on my android device ?
3)If I allow sync to automatically sync in by authorising 'auto sync' the data usage section of Android, is this also going to affect my other account like my google one ? (plus, 4) I cannot chose what to manually sync because it's greyed when this authorisation isn't done)
5)What happen when I check or uncheck one of the box in sync parameters ? what happen of the data on Mozilla servers ?
6)Are the synced item in the history or tabs displayed in any way for example with a little icon when for example using the awesome bar ?
Finally I thank you all in advance for your answers and I think Sync may need a little more extensive help section, doesn't you ?
PS: May be some of those are bugs that need to be fixes feel free to report to bugzilla or to suggest me to do it :)

    Thanks for your answers
    2) You mean by the resources of the pc running ? (it's how I know I have too much when Fx cannot start anymore despite I think it should handle a lot more tabs when they're unloaded) It's probably not the case :(
3)I tried and it work now :) , you were right but since all account I pre-checked for synchronizing as soon as you authorise automatic synchronisation they sync.
4)This was an usability problem when auto sync is not authorized you cant properly select the item you may wanna sync manually
    5) This is great :)
7)no it's not abc order, 'tabs as well' uh I doubt it you wouldn't want of browser which each time you click on a tab, move it to the top or the bottom of your tab list
8)So if I get it sync for the tabs is more POP than IMAP in the way that you cannot act on the data you're receiving it's just a copy :( That doesn't sound like real syncing to me.

  • Still have lots of questions about my power shot sx150, still dont understand shutterspeed, aperture

really need to understand shutter speed and iso and aperture...tried and my screen and the pics got darker the higher i set the shutterspeed, why???
    HELP

When you set the shutter speed to a higher value, it means that you are taking a picture FASTER. To explain why it is darker, realize that there is a sensor behind the shutter and the longer the sensor sees light, the brighter the picture will be. Similarly, the sensor is not exposed to a lot of light when you set it to a high shutter speed.
ISO is the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light. The higher the ISO, the more grain/noise there is in your picture, but you will be able to shoot at faster shutter speeds because the ISO compensates for the less amount of light your sensor is exposed to. When you set it to a low ISO, you will have less grain/noise but you will have to decrease the shutter speed in order to expose your sensor to more light.
Aperture is the opening of your lens. If the lens has a small aperture (I.e. a high F value - f/8), less light will come through the lens and consequently, the sensor will be exposed to less light. Thus, making your pictures darker (in comparison to a low F stop). A high F value also leads to a sharper picture (i.e a deeper depth of field). For landscapes, a good rule of thumb is shooting with f/8. When you shoot with a lower value of aperture, the lens opening is larger. You are allowing more light into your camera and will make the picture brighter. A small F value will lead to a shallow depth of field. It is a good idea to use a smaller value for portraits and for low-light situations.
    In short,
    ↑ shutter speed, darker picture
    ↓ shutter speed, brighter picture
    ↑ ISO, brighter picture
    ↓ ISO, darker picture
    ↑ Aperture, darker picture
    ↓ Aperture, brighter picture

  • Lots of questions about security

I was a pc user for years and got myself 2 brand new tiger system mac- desk top and lap top, in june of this year. i did not know that unlike pc there is no history of when a document is looked viewed past the last time (unless some one out there knows any better). i was friends with a person who i let use both my desk and lap top with out any security on it or separate accounts, basically giving her access to all my info and admin. i suspect that she looked at some private stuff but cant prove it because i opened the documents that i suspected she looked at, hence erasing the prior date and time. since then i got Terminal, logkext, a separate accounts for guests and a code on my own account. for various reasons i stopped being friends with this person- she was creepy- and she started to stalk me and the cops had to get involved and all that horrible stuff.....is there any way i can find out if, when she had access before the codes, she placed any spy ware on my computer without disrupting Terminal and logkext? i know that there are spyware programs out there that can be downloaded and not seen in the applications windows. what is Support-LogMeInRescue.exe? its on my desktop and i cant open it. what is System Profiler? what should i look out for and where should i start looking? better safe than sorry.

Your saying you let another person use your account. So, they became you as far as the computer was concerned. Now, you want to distinguish between you and you?
There is recent items. Apple > recent items. Of course, it is a short list.
i did not know that unlike pc there is no history of when a document is looked viewed past the last time (unless some one out there knows any better).
What Windows facility are you referring to? I'm not aware of this beyond a short global history list.
You will want to look into a firmware password.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
Without a firmware password, anyone with physical access to your machine can boot into single user mode or target disk mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://www.securemac.com/macosxsingleuser.php
Basically, you hold down the command-s key when powering on. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.

  • 3 Macs - lots of questions about updating (G3, G5 and a MacBook)

I have a Power Mac G3 running OS 9.2. I messed with network settings a time ago trying to move files to a new machine and managed to remove its ability to connect to the Internet. I should just get rid of the thing, but I'd at least like to be able to donate it in functioning condition. Can someone help me get it connected to the Internet again? I don't even know where to begin anymore. (I get a "Domain name host for server has failed" message when my machine tries to connect AOL Instant Messenger on startup.)
Next up, my iMac Power PC G5. It currently runs OS X 10.4.11. Can I upgrade the OS and how far? Garage Sale (eBay software), Entourage and Word are the only non-Apple applications I use on it. I believe if I update the OS I need to update Office too, right? Currently I'm using Office 2004.
Last but not least is my MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo processor running OS X 10.4.11. It's my main machine, and Garage Sale and Office are key here. And I need to be able to share files between my iMac and the MacBook. I know I can't upgrade Garage Sale without upgrading my OS. Upgrades are always so "painful" for me because usually doing it means some else "breaks" along the way. I'm just not savvy enough (anymore!) to do this without help.
The two newer Macs can connect to my home shared server, along with my husband's PC. I'd love some help on which OS each machine can successfully be upgraded to without a great deal of angst.
    Thanks.

The beige G3 can be upgraded to 10.2.8 or left at the version of OS 9 you now have installed. Minimum RAM for Jaguar is 128 MBs. 3.0 GBs of space needed on the hard drive although practically you need at least 10-20 GBs of disk drive space.
Leopard requires a minimum of 512 MBs of installed RAM, so what you have is fine.
Snow Leopard requires 1 GB of RAM and Lion requires 2 GBs for your MB.

  • Question about using new battery in old Powerbook

I have a pre-intel Powerbook G4, and the battery is pretty much toast (lasts about 15 minutes now). I have ordered a new battery for it, and I have this question about using it:
Am I smarter to keep the new strong battery out of the PB most days (as I usually work with it plugged in at home) and just pop it in when I know I will be out surfing on batteries? Or is it just as good living in my laptop 24/7 and only occasionally being called upon to do its job?
    Current bad Battery Information below:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1144
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1115
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12387
    Cycle Count: 281
    thanks folks, Shereen

Hi, Shereen. Every Powerbook battery wants to be used — drained and then recharged — at least every couple of weeks. If you've always used your Powerbook on AC power nearly all the time, and not followed that pattern of discharging and recharging the battery every week or two, it's possible that your use habits have shortened the lifespan and prematurely diminished the capacity of your old battery. Of course it's also possible that your battery is merely old, as a battery's capacity also diminishes with age regardless of how it's used. You didn't say how old the battery is in years, so this may or may not be an issue. I mention it only because it can be an issue.
For general information on handling a battery for the longest possible lifespan, see this article. My advice on the basis of that article and long experience reading these forums is that it would be OK to do as you propose, but I doubt that you'd derive any significant benefit from it. You would still want to be sure of putting the new battery through a charge/discharge cycle every week or two, even if you didn't have a reason to use the Powerbook away from home or your desk, because sitting unused outside the computer is just as bad for a battery as sitting unused inside it. And you should never remove the battery from your computer when it's completely or almost completely discharged and let it sit that way any longer than a day or two.

I see lots of people asking questions about the "white screen" app store update failure. I see no answers from Apple about this...What is the problem, and what is the solution?

It's a problem that Apple is having with their App updating system.  The best solution is to be patient, and wait for Apple to solve their systemic problem.

  • Another PowerBook 5300 Question

These PowerBooks came preloaded with System 7.5.2. I need to get or create a boot disk so I can repair the hard drive, which according to Disk First Aid it needs. I used Floppy Disk Maker to create a backup set of software disks, but none was labeled Disk Tools, so if it's in those I don't know where to find it. I thought the installer might be like OS X, which lets you go to Disk Utility before installing software, but there's no option on the 5300's installation Disk One.
If you know what I need to do, I'd appreciate your posting the information.
    Thanks.
    John

I'd use SD cards because I already have them, and I'd have to buy a CF card. Speed isn't an issue because I'm only fine-tuning these machines
OK. SD cards can be made bootable, too. The 6-in-1 PC Card adapter that I use for SD is from SanDisk (as is an adapter for CF only), but other makes/models may work as well. Remember the re-formatting (HFS).
When starting from a flash card, one can press and hold the four keys Command(Apple) + Option(Alt) + Shift + Delete(Backspace) in order to bypass the internal hard disk (and its system folder). One can also choose a startup disk in the Startup Disk control panel.
I found a 7.5 disk tools on an OS 7.5 Install CD
The PowerBook 5300 requires minimum 7.5.2.
the disk tools file I downloaded that says it's for OS 8.1 failed to start up the 5300. I tried twice but the floppy drive spits the disk out and defaults to the hard drive.
The Disk Tools PPC can, as Niel indicated, be used in a PowerBook 5300. Do not forget the Make a Floppy command (under the Utilities menu) in Disk Copy 6.3.3 for a properly sector-copied diskette from the disk image.
Alternatively, the At Ease-IDE Utility Disk here could possibly be of interest to you.
If you wish to install an operating system onto an SD card, you could use the system software installer (Easy or Custom Install). If necessary, a full System 7.5.3 is downloadable from Apple (for instance, the North American English version here).
