Lots of questions before buying a macbook pro..help please!!
So I am about to buy a macbook pro in the next couple of days with these specifications:

After I get the computer I am going to upgrade to 4 GB myself (cheaper). This computer will primarily be used for video editing (I'm off to film school). Here come the questions!!
1. This is probably a really stupid question, but the 15 inch macbook pro has an isight right?
2. I am in need of an external hard drive (or two). I was thinking of getting 1 TB primarily for my video projects, and then another 250 GB hard drive for time machine. Are two external hard drives going to be too much for the computer to handle? What hard drive(s) do you recommend? Right now I am thinking a G-Tech 1.0TB Quad-interface hard drive and a 250 GB G-Tech hard drive (for time machine). Which leads to my next question.
3. I would love to use eSATA with my TB hard drive...but there aren't eSATA ports included on the macbook pro (I think). So i researched and found the 2-Port NitroAV eSATA II 3Gb/s Professional Express Card (34mm). This would work with the computer right? Is eSATA necessary or should I just stick with firewire? I'm attracted to it because I will be editing video with the computer and I would love the increased speeds but I'm afraid it will overwhelm the computer.

2-look at macsales.com, click on harddrives then all things fire wire. they have a lot of different drives ranging all the way up to a 2 tb setup (its 2 separate stripped raid set ups that are then mirrored against each other). they also sell some esata dives, not sure what size they go to but they hae them
fire wire 400 has some crazy top limit of drives you can chain together of like 40some odd so 2 will be fine, i have 2 running right now and no issues. i would suggest if you get the drives form OWC (macsales) you use the softraid program that comes with it.
3- you can get a pci card for the card slot which macsales also sells if you go though them so you dont have to go more than one place

If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.

Things I should know before buying a MacBook Pro?
Currently looking into buying my first MacBook, and I am looking at waht I believe to be last years MacBook Pro, but I am wondering what essential things should I know before buying one? And what things should I buy to go with it? Or anything I should be aware of?

Mac's are not exactly cheap, and to do 3D gaming your going to need the 15" MacBook Pro or better, prefeably the top end model with powerful graphics to last the longest with paid OS X upgrades one has to perform annually.
You wanted to be aware of buying a Mac, I can tell you this. Even though a Windows PC tends to get malware, it all depends upon the user and their actions online, sharing files and email services choices. I have Windows using friends and it's all about what sites they visit online, if they share files or get email on the machine or via a reliable web email service like Gmail, Hushmail etc that watches for malware/spam.
The best thing about Windows 7 is if you make the System Restore boot disks/images regularly, date them and make your file backups, you can recover your own system if it gets malware. Security Essentials anti-malware is free. Microsoft supports Windows with security and stability updates for apx 10 years on average, all you need to do is find a reputable PC hardware vendor with good products.
Laptops don't last nearly as long as desktops, this goes for expensive Mac's as well as PC's.
Apple's 13" Macbook Pro and under series are nothing more than your standard Windows 7 Office store PC in a fancy case, their performance and OS upgrade options tend to slow down faster than the 15" MacBook Pro series and up.
Also Apple releases a new OS X version every year, if you don't upgrade and thus have to upgrade all your third party software, your DENIED security and stability updates rather fast. The new OS X versions tend to slow down older machines to force you to consider a hardware upgrade before the machine has lived it's full hardware lifespand.
So with Apple your paying more for your annual computing costs than with Windows PC, and with a expensive MacBook Pro laptop, one drop or theft/lost away and your out a very expensive investment.
Over the last 10 years, I have spent nearly $10,000 on Apple hardware for $1000 a year, my Windows XP using friend has spent $1000 total over that same last 10 years for a Windows XP desktop that is still going actually (installed a new video card for him last week)
If you want a machine that will really last, get a Windows 7 tower with upgradable options, like 4GB of RAM expandable to 16GB, a decent power supply and video card upgrade options. With Mac's you can't upgrade the video card and the MacPro you can't find newer faster cards. So your 3D gaming on a Mac is going to get cut off a lot sooner as newer, more hardware demanding 3D games are released.
Sure Windows is a pain, however as a lifelong Mac user I can honestly say Windows 7 is pretty decent operating system compared to Vista and XP, it's not quite as nice as OS X, nor as reliable, however if one takes the proper precautions while on the Internet, makes System Restore Disks/Images (included in Windows 7 now) then one can restore their own system themselves quite easily, a Mac requires a rare/occassional reinstall too depending upon the user abuse, it's not immune to that, also there ARE Mac based malware, just not as much.
All one has to do is find a quality PC vendor for their hardware, I hear Dell is making cheap crap now, however they do have a nice system in place for hardware upgrade options.
Another issue with Mac's, is that 99% of the buisness world uses Windows PC's, Mac's comprise of only 6% now of the total computing market compared to over 90% Windows PC's, your going to need to keep your skills up there and on a Mac, you will have to BUY Windows and install it on your Mac, a extra cost plus the Windows software you need to keep your skills up on. I made that mistake only using Mac operating systems all these years, I am suffering for that now.
So if your rich college student, then get a powerful Mac laptop that can run Windows in Bootcamp and a virtual machine program.
If your a poor college student, then forget the Mac and get a cheap $400 Windows PC laptop and a Playstation 3, both disposable and cheaply replaceable.
There is nothing special about a Mac anymore other than a "status symbol", if you buy a decent PC latop with a good screen, good graphics it will do the job you need and not tend to get stolen like Mac's do, or in some cases a unknown jealous PC user will spill a drink on your Mac or try to walk off with it like has occured with my 17" MacBook Pro.
Times are tough and if you want a flashy quality PC laptop, get a Sony or something, least it runs Windows for the next 10 years or until the hardware drops.
Apple is all about providing the most expensive computer for the rich consumer market, not the most practical anymore.
Laptops always last longer than open desktop towers and Apple doesn't really care about the lower cost market, rather see you have something than be always paying a lot more with Apple products you can't afford. -
Questions before getting macbook pro. help please!!!
I'm planning to get a macbook pro and I have a few questions before doing so.
1. Is there a way to manually switch the graphics card to the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT? As you all know the new macbook pros have 2 linked graphics cards and it will switch back and forth automatically depending on what you do, i.e. watching a movie or playing games would go to the 9600m GT card, whereas just browsing the internet would be on the 9400m card. I went to an Apple store and asked the people working there and they couldn't answer my question. One person said it was depending on the power saving and it always go to the better depending on what you do. Is there a way to manually switch it tho?
2. It's always nice to have the option of different OS's on the computer, so if I install Vista and Linux on there would the hardware work fine? When I say hardware I mean in terms of the graphics cards switching over automatically or manually, and if the backlit keyboard would work fine. The people working in the Apple store gave me 2 completely different answers because they're not sure about installing Vista or Linux. This would be using Bootcamp or another program... I don't intend on using Parallel at all.
3. One person from the Apple store said Linux is not support on Bootcamp, but I searched around online and saw people that were able to put Linux onto their macbooks. Can anyone enlighten me? Would everything work fine?
4. This next question is not related to Apple or macbooks. It's just a general question that I've had in mind. Do drivers or settings work properly/ok on different OS? Say if I got a mouse or keyboard that came with a program to change the settings [i.e. speed of mouse, and other options] and I switched over to another OS that I dualboot, would the settings stay the same on the other OS?

It seems to stay on the 9400m when you're just surfing the net, even if the settings are set to not save battery life so it's on higher performance. I'm looking to make it stay on the 9600m gt no matter what. Do you mind telling me how you manually switch? Where to go?
As for the auto-switch, the people working in the Apple store said it does automatically switch and detects what you're doing... -

Bus Speed: 667 MHzOS X Lion alone is no reason to upgrade your hardware if you don't need too and what you got still works good.
OS X Lion is going to change a LOT of things, there are a lot of third party software and bugs to work out.
Give it several months or just get a new 2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro (or better) Quad core with 1GB Radeon 6750M now with the RELIABLE Snow Leopard and let everyone else be the guinea pig beta testers.
OS X Lion is only $30, surely you can wait.
Apple want's everyone on this new OS fast as they make 30% cut off all programs people buy through the MacAppStore built into the operating system. So they might even give free copies away later. -
Buying a MacBook Pro - Help Suggestions

I'm looking to get a new computer. I'm considering a MacBook Pro and could use some advice.
I'm a front-end web developer, who primarily works from home. In the instances in which I work for a client on-site, I usually use their equipment/software, otherwise, I'd be using this Mac.
The programs I primarily use are:
Photoshop
Illustrator
Chrome
Firefox
Safari
text editor)
Word
Excel
My Photoshop files can be pretty large, and it's not uncommon for me to have a dozen or so tabs open in each browser. The program I use the most would probably be my text editor of choice, as I spend the most time coding (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). I also listen to music all day via YouTube. Additionally, I tend to work with all my applications/browsers open simultaneously, as I switch frequently between them.
Though I'm not a gamer, I intend to learn mobile development (both iOS and Android) this year.
A number of my clients use Internet Explorer, so I'd like to view IE on the Mac. I see that there's a program called VMWare Fusion which will allow me to view IE on the Mac. I currently have an old Dell computer that I will continue to use, if need be for PC-specific tasks.
With all that said, this looks like something that would fit me:

it seems as though Photoshop and Illustrator would be the most voracious consumers of RAM among your primary programs. Because the RAM is soldered in on the Retina models, it’s non-upgradeable; so if you prefer a Retina model, I’d recommend that you go for a Retina model with 16 GB of RAM. (The non-Retina models have sockets, so their RAM is upgradeable.) If you prefer to work with all of your programs opened simultaneously, then don’t underestimate the importance of sufficient RAM.
I use a 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro myself, and it suffices for my needs (once I’d installed a SSD), but I don’t use Photoshop-type programs, so I don’t know if you’d find the 1280×800 resolution to be limiting in Photoshop. The discrete GPUs on the 15-inch models would also be of benefit to graphics-intensive programs.
With either of your choices, you could also install Windows on your MacBook Pro by using Boot Camp, and choose which OS to start at boot time. Either of your choices above could run 64-bit Windows 7 or Windows 8 in Boot Camp; the non-Retina model could also run 32-bit Windows 7. -

If you haven't already done so, you need to authorize your Mac with the same iTunes account with iTunes that is used with iTunes on your PC at work - with the Mac that you plan on syncing iTunes with.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. -

We've just bought a Macbook pro yesterday and have added a D link wireless modem router to our main PC but can't set up the Macbook to work by wireless, Can you please help? iI don't know too much about computers so would need an idiotproof guide. I need Macbook Pro help please!
My Macbook Pro is not even two years old yet and has been freezing frequently for about a month. About a week ago it completely froze, so I turned it off to re-start it and it would not turn back on. Everytime I tried to turn it back on it would get stuck on the white loading page for hours. It is finals week at college and I have lost a very important document for one of my classes! Macbook Pro Help Please! Why does it randomly shut off?
My late 2009 Macbook OSX 10.9.2 keeps on randomly shutting down. When it's charging, everything works fine. However, if not, the computer randomly shuts off either 2 min into when I use it or 20 min into it. As long as just the season has been stated, there is no guarantee that Macs purchased during the season in question will get up to date pricing. So watch http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ the day that the release date is announced. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. Thankfully since 10.7's release Apple's full fledged releases have only been $20 USD, and updates are free to the full fledged release. I.e. 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 are updates to 10.7.
10.8.1 to 10.8.4 are updates to 10.8. It was only with 10.6 and earlier the distribution for each full release was at least $99 and up to date were around $20 going back to 10.2. 10.6 is though available on the Apple Store for only $20. -

I would not even ask a friend to *just hold* it for 25 days, as you have a 14 day grace period to return "for any reason" and that time should be spent using it to determine if there are issues.
You may also owe considerable "import duties" if you bring back a system purchased in the US. Your own country may want to take its 20+% (just guessing) import duties when you return home. -
