Lots of SUID WARNINGS in Disk Utility after installing 10.5.6

I ran Disk Utility after installing 10.5.6 from Software Updates and I get a lot of SUID Warnings like the following...
2008-12-16 12:29:01 -0800: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
2008-12-16 12:29:01 -0800: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.

2008-12-16 12:29:02 -0800: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Anyone know what this is about?

I do not like the idea of "just ignore", that starts to sound like Microsoft "do not worry about that blue screen just reboot"
Whether you like the idea or not, they are merely warnings.

  • Warnings when running disk utility after downloads, etc.

I use Mc Janitor nightly to clear some of the 'stuff" that accumulates with files, etc. but run Disk Utility after downloads and such about once a month. I have done this since 2003 when I had my first e-mac. Only recently have "warnings " appear on the list of repair or varify disk...that says certain items can not be repaired. The techs at the Apple store said to just ignore them, which I have been doing. But the last download, which was a rather large new Security download, came up with something new, both on my computer and my husband's lap top when he downloaded it. These are letters that appear and say ACL found but not expected on Applications/Utilities, on "Applications" and on "Library."
We are just curious about what ACL is (or are) and what it means to have them in our systems.
It does say that the disk is verified when I run that. Everything seems to be working normally.

  • Missing "Planning" option in configuration utility after installing BPMA

    Hello,
I am unable to find "planning" option in configuration utility after installing BPMA.
But the planning applications are working normally.
Has anyone faced this issue before?
Can anyone please tell me how to bring the back in configuration utility?
    Thanks
    Hemanth

    Hello Azmat,
You are right I did the same.
It was a big mess when I did that. I had to reapply patches and re-set DIM settings.
I saw this posting by John in the forms.
Planning Option Not Visible in Configuration Utility
Wondering if this is the solution. But I found this post after re-installing planning in Dev and QA.
I am yet to install EPMA in prod. I want to see if I can install it without disturbing other environments.

  • How many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) ?

    Hi,
I would like to know that how many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) on MBA i5.
    Many Thanks,
    Eric

I want to buy MBA i5, I would like to free disk space of MBA 13" i5, Could anyone tell it to me? Thanks
As you're buing a new MacBook Air, it will come pre-installed with Lion.  The actual installation will be somewhat larger than a "clean" Lion install as it will come with iLife preinstalled.  Obviously, with an Air's limited storage space, you want to be sure that you have enough room for any applications and data that you'll want to keep on the SSD as well.  It is fairly easy to upgrade the SSD on an Air:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Express
The amount of RAM you have installed is probably more important.  Fortunately, the newest 13" MacBook Airs all come with 4GB standard now.

  • Disk Utility after trying to partition

Okay, so I've read a lot of discussions about partitioning, but none of them seem to match my situation.
After I run Bootcamp, I get the error: "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
Then, when I go into Disk Utility - Partition, everything is shaded such that I can't change it [but it says that is in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)] and then another portion is shaded.
I have backed-up my data, but when it refers to 'disk' I'm a little bit confused. Does this mean HD? Still new to Mac.
    Thanks,
    Cristi
Oh yea, I noticed there was a SP-2 for windows on this site. Is this so that it can be installed with the disc (that doesn't have SP-2)? If not, can someone please offer a cheap alternative to this? I have a ton of XP disc with SP-1

I don't know if this will solve your answer caz I do not understand the question
and yes disc mean HD that's first, second to install BootCamp your HD must be a single partition ( You must only have one partition ) if not formate the HD and install the BOOTCAMP while it is single formated.
    hope it helps

  • Hard Drive Upgrade - Incorrect Capacity Shown In Disk Utility After Installation

I have an older model Macbook Version 2.1 that had an 80GB hard drive installed.  I have just installed a Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB internal hard drive upgrade and successfully cloned my data over using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The problem I have encountered is that only 98.1GB of capacity is shown in Disk Utility for the new hard drive.  After starting the computer using my bootable copy via an external USB drive, I formatted the newly installed 500GB drive with the appropriate Apple formatting (e.g. GUID and Mac OS Extended Journaled) but it only shows 98.1GB of space available on the new drive.  I was able to successfully clone the information from my bootable back-up of the old drive to the new drive but I just don't have the full 500GB capacity available to me.
What should I do?  Is this a problem with the new hard drive or is there something I need to change on my Macbook to "see" the whole capacity of my new drive?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Dave

    Hi Andrew,
When I formatted the new drive did it with 1 partition and it displays a TOTAL of 98.1GB free space (both in Disk Utility and About This Drive).  As far as I can tell, the Macbook is treating the new WD drive as if it is only a 98.1GB drive rather than the 500GB drive that it is.
    Thoughts?
    Dave

  • Disk Utility: after creating the .DMG (compressed image) When "scan image for restore" finishes it displays "unable to scan (internal error)". Since the process was scanning for about 1 hr is this a fake warning?

External 500GB drive is partitioned with 400GB for Mac OS extended (journalling) and 2nd partition formatted today as "ExFAT".
Yesterday I tried to create a disk image of my HD to no avail - this was compressed on a FAT partition. I got a warning after running the <scan image for restore> saying "unable to scan (internal error)"
I rang Apple support who suggested formatting a partition as MAC OS extended (journalling) and choose to save the image as "read/write'. The image process stopped writing at about 200GB and then the file size jumped to 499GB (ie the size of the HD). But the process did nothing for about an hour so I foce quit disk utility (as suggested by apple support)
My current attempt was to format the external drive again; this time with a 400GB Mac OS extended (journal) format; plus a 100GB ExFAT format partition. The new image was created after about 2.5hrs with a compressed size of 149GB. However, after running the "scan image for restore" facility I got the warning message "unable to scan filename " (internal error). The process was scanning the image file according to the progress bar - this took about hour - thus the warning is a puzzle.
If anyone can say more about this error I would really appreciate knowing tips for using disk utility. The screen grab is below.
"unable to scan filename " (internal error)
    thanks

Thanks for a quick reply <baltwo>. You’ve answered that it is not a fake message!
fyi: I thought that I would use my external Buffalo for two purposes; namely the smaller ExFAT partition for copying stuff to my win7 netbook. The larger partition was to be used as my imac image of SL. So this was my first attempt at using disk utility - the idea being to hold an image backup at another location. Plus I now have the Lion thumbdrive ready to upgrade from SL and so being cautious wanted to have a SL image backup
Anyway I followed the apple instructions using my mac 10.6.3 install DVD but it would appear from other discussions that <unable to scan (internal error)> is not unique to me.
I’ll get back to apple telephone support for further advice.
I would though be grateful for an “idiots’ guide to making an image backup of my internal HD that runs SL 10.6.8
eg should I have just one partition on the external USB drive? format it as Mac OS extended? create the image as compressed or read/write? Basically I’ll do whatever will work!!
    thanks again

  • Disk Utility after upgrading to Lion

I couldn't get disk utility app to work from the Finder. I finally figured out to go to the "About This Mac" menu, upper left apple emblem, then clicked More Info.. then Storage then Disk Utility at the bottom right. Then I was able to set up my back up external HD for Timemachine. Took HOURS to figure this out. Hope this saves someone a lot of time.

Mine doesn't look like that. I have a MacBook laptop. It has a "Dock" and in that Dock is "Finder". The old "Disk Utility" is in "Finder" and doesn't work. It's also in "Launchpad" and it also doesn't work. I can't find where my screenshots are going, for some unknown reason, or I'ld show you. The screenshots used to go to my desktop. Anyway the new "Disk Utility" is now in the "Apple" menu at the top of my "Safari" browser window on the left and looks like an apple. I clicked "About This Mac" then "More Info..." Then I chose "Storage" from the 4 options. Then "Disk Utilities" on the bottom right. Okay I figured the screen shots out. Much of the new OS different. See on the right is the "Dock" and I've magnafied the "Finder" by mousing over it. It has the smiley face and under it is "Launch Pad". Top Left is the Apple where the new and only working "Utlity Disk" is now located.

  • Cannot burn encrypted disk w/disk utility after Yosemite upgrade

I upgraded to Yosemite and now I cannot create an encrypted disk with disk utility.  I have a disk loaded with a project I recently completed with Final Cut X and I need to make an encrypted .cdr file for the purposes of making write protected copies for my client.  I have always been able to do this by selecting the volume in Disk Utility, clicking New Image, and selecting DVD/CD master for the image format and then my encryption level (usually 128-bit)   ALWAYS WORKS but not since upgrading to Yosemite.   Now every time (after restarts, etc.) I'm getting first a dialogue box telling me it's starting to create the .cdr then quickly an error box that says:  Unable to create "<disk name>.cdr" (Inappropriate ioctl for device)     HELP!!!   Need to get these disks burned and out to clients ASAP!!!

Are you trying to save the file to the desktop? I read elsewhere that Yosemite doesn't like that permissions wise. I was able to successfully create a .cdr by changing the file location to Documents.

  • In disk utility, after an erase of my HD, it still shows used file space. How do I completely erase the HD?

My computer wouldn't boot past the white screen and after trying a few things, I was able to find the original installation CD, hold C while turning the computer on and get into disk utility. I tried running a repair on the HD and it said the disk could not be repaired. I tried restoring from a backup, but about 20 min into the installation, I got a message saying the installation couldn't be completed.
I decided to try and just completely erase the HD from disk utility then try the installation again. However, after I try erasing the HD, it still shows there is used space, six folders and two files.
The HD I'm trying to erase looks like it's a partition under something called "250.06 GB toshiba mk2555gsxf media". Should I try erasing there? I'm not super tech savvy and I'm nervous to do more damage.

From what you wrote, your disk may be altered or dying. Diskutility shall give you full report after testing disk integrity, but it seems you'll have to change your hdd pretty soon.
Anyway, what you see as "250.06GB ... Media" is your physical hdd. Macintosh HD or any name your hdd have under MacOS is just a partition on this hdd.  But MacOS needs others hidden partitions for EFI and recovery, for instance, which take some space even if you don't see it.
If you really want an install from scratch, you may click on the Media line displaying your hdd, go to erase tab and write another partition table. Afterward, create a single partition and installa MacOS. If your disk is dammaged, it won't repair it.

  • Is it normal for an external HD to blink its light and still be visible in Disk Utility, after it's been Ejected?

After Eject, the drive disappears from Finder, stops spinning and its light starts a slow blinking pattern, but in Disk Utility the volume appears greyed-out and unmounted while the HD is still visible (not greyed-out). If you try to re-eject it from there nothing happens... Disconnecting the HD's USB cable after a normal Eject (from the Finder), does not prompt any type of "incorrect ejection of volume" messages.
Other drives that I tried, only differ in the activity of their light post-ejection - some stay still, others blink.
Just for reference, when I eject a USB Pendrive from Finder, it disappears completely and stops blinking.
Is this normal OS X behavior?

    ForeignerMullet wrote:

This is probably normal. Some drives blink when being written to/read from, while others blink unless read/write is occuring.
but in Disk Utility the volume appears greyed-out and unmounted while the HD is still visible (not greyed-out). If you try to re-eject it from there nothing happens...
If this is just for a few seconds, that's normal. If it's permanent, it's not.
Disconnecting the HD's USB cable after a normal Eject (from the Finder), does not prompt any type of "incorrect ejection of volume" messages.
    Normal/good.

    See above.
Just for reference, when I eject a USB Pendrive from Finder, it disappears completely and stops blinking.
Normal; a flash drive has no source of power and could not possibly keep blinking.

  • Did anyone else lose the ability to see recovery drive in Disk Utility after 107.1?

I do remember seeing it. I guess they removed its visability.

  • Which Disk for Disk Utility after Leopard upgrade?

    Greetings,
If I need to run Disk Utility from the DVD, which disk should I use? The original disk that came with my iMac when I purchased it, or the Leopard install disk that I upgraded to a little over a month ago?
    Thanks in advance - Scrags

If the earlier Disk Utility didn't try to "repair" anything. then the Leopard Disk Utility should still work.
If the older Disk Utility tried to repair a Time Machine volume, it might remove folder hard links. The Leopard Disk Utility would have no way of fixing that.

  • Didnt used check disk utility on install & want to reinstall from scratch

Things are buggy so figured a reinstall this time using the Check disk utlity thingy - anyone know what I need to do?

OK, I think we can narrow this down.
My first inclination is to think that you might have some directory corruption that's interfering with how your Mac is running. The comment above to back up your data is right on. Do that first.
Once that's done, try booting to your install disk, selecting Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and then select your hard drive. Pick "Verify disk," and if it needs repair, choose "Repair disk" - this may resolve the issue.
Look and see if you have any third party addons that need updating, or applications that run at login (you can find them in System Preferences, Accounts, login items) and disable them. See if that helps.
If worse comes to worst, you may need to erase your drive and reinstall from scratch, and then restore from your backup, but let's see how the other steps go first.
The "Check Install Disk" is verifying the DVD, not your hard drive, so that's not likely to help at all in this situation.
Post back after running Disk Utility and let us know the results.

  • Disk utility on install media

    Hello,
When using the Disk utility on W7 SP1 install media to partition and format the HDD, unlike Windows built-in Disk Management utility it creates a 200MB partition that some boot files are placed with and/or by BitLocker. I have always avoided this issue but,
a friend has deleted W7 x86 SP1 with an older vs of GParted and on the phone told me it can't deal with the "Unallocated Mystery" space as he calls it. I assume the 200MB partition is hidden from Windows Explorer and I'm assuming the partition does
not start/end (whatever) like a 512 byte block does and it's a 4096 sized block like W7 reportedly makes, I'm not sure how it works exactly. Is that partition an MBR, 512e, or a 4Kn?. I know Disk Management can handle GPT types of partitions, that are 512e
(GUID) I'm guessing. (maybe both) I've used the stand alone GParted but never dealt with the 200MB partition. I need some info before helping him on team viewer or on the phone
    thanks

    Hello michael_clyde,
Do you mean that you have 200MB partition in the Windows 7?
Please share us a screenshot about disk management for better analyzation.
Based on my knowledge, the 200MB partition can be Windows RE partition.
Please take a look at the following article about understanding Disk Partitions.
