Lots of video formats, can Apple TV play them?

Considering buying an Apple TV, I'm trying to learn what it can & can't do.  In addition to the seasons of shows I'd be buying from iTunes, and other services such as Netflix & Hulu Plus, I have tons of video files kept in an external drive.  They're in every format you can think of... AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV & all the rest.  What would I do to view these?  Would I be able to add these to my iTunes library and view them that way?
Still trying to wrap my head around this, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You'd need to convert them to a supported format.
Video formats supported
    •    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    •    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
    •    Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Audio formats supported
    ▪    HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through

  • What uncompressed video format can Apple TV play?

Hi folks. I'm thinking about buying an Apple TV to stream video files from my Windows iTunes instance. Does the Apple TV support any uncompressed video formats? Like MKV?? Thanks.

Mpeg2 is still a very highly compressed format.
There are a couple of basics relating to compression that you might wish to consider. The aspects of compression discussed hereinafter are not necessarily technically correct but are an analogy to help you understand a little about compression.
Firstly as Jon points out earlier, uncompressed video is essentially for editing and would never be used for delivery, compression of some data will make no difference to quality at all as some of the data that forms an uncompressed file is redundant anyway.
A very simple example of this would be a blue screen. Every pixel on that screen is blue and every frame of that video is the same as the first, an uncompressed video would record data about every pixel for every frame, you can see how much space can be saved if you were able to provide data for just one pixel and tell the device to simply replicate it for every pixel in every frame. (There are about 23,000,000 pixels in each second of 720p video).
You can also compress non redundant data by replacing it with a calculation that simply regenerates the original data (or close to) from information about neighbouring frames, such a calculation typically takes up much less room than the data it replaces.
In considering the later example you will note the insertion of the phrase 'close to', depending on the amount and the type of compression 'close to' could mean so close you could not possibly notice or nothing like it at all. The less you compress the data the more likely 'close to' means so close you could not possibly notice.
In addition to the amount of compression, the type of compression used is extremely important, a simple calculation will not produce the same quality as complex calculations, you might consider here mpeg2 (the type of compression used in your DVD's) as a simple calculation, it therefore can't compress video all that much before it starts to lose quality and therefore the video files need to be fairly large.
Now consider a more modern type of compression such as mpeg4/10 (the type of compression used by the Apple TV) which is much more complex and therefore able to compress video much more than mpeg 2 and retain the same quality, so much so that you likely won't see any difference in quality between your mpeg2 video and the same video compressed to 20% the size.
In summary, you will hopefully see that there is absolutely no point trying to keep your video in it's original format, it will simply take up much more space on your hard drives and you won't get any value from it.

  • What kind of video formats can i use to import into imovie?

what kind of video formats can i use to import into imovie?

    Hello,
Adobe stopped supporting flash for android since ICS. You may still be able to download the latest (old) flash player "at your own risk" from Adobe archived flash player versions:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
Please read the disclaimer at the end as it is not advised to install unsupported flash versions.
As for video streaming, there are lot of apps for that and it's just a matter of your preference.
    Hope that helps

  • Can apple tv play ...

can apple tv play an h.264 movie with:
    ( a little more than 5Mbps bitrate(but less than 5.5),
high profile, which can be played with QT on Mac OS X without any 3rd party add-ons,
and subtitles (QT and iTunes can recognize the subtitle track, as a 'subtitle')
    )?

A DVD converted into iTunes and run at maximum bitrate on the AppleTV will look pretty much the same as it being played in your DVD player. No increase in resolution. The AppleTV will not upscale the image like a high-end receiver or specific DVD player would.

  • I have supposedly downloaded 8 i-tunes - why can't i play them?

    i have supposedly downloaded 8 i-tunes. Why can't i play them????????

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple, nor is it 'live chat'.
What happens when you try to play them and what have you tried to fix it ? If they've downloaded successfully then they should be listed in the Music part of your iTunes library - if you select Music on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes do they, and if they do what happens when you double-click on them ? If you have iTunes 11 and are using a Mac then option-command-S should get get the sidebar to show, control-S if you are using a PC.
If they don't play then have you tried  closing and re-opening iTunes and/or re-downloading and installing it ? Have you tried adding any of your songs to your iTunes library (File > Add To Library) and do they play ? If they don't play either then you may be better off re-posting in the relevant forum, iTunes For Windows or iTunes For Mac.

  • Video Formats - can AVI, MPG etc be added to the N...

    Hi,
    PLEASE HELP!!
I have just bought a Nokia N95 & I am loving it!! the only let downs for me is the Flash (there are some much better qualitiy camera phones/flashes out there), & the Video Formats.
I am trying to find out if you can play other video formats on the N95 such as AVI,MPG etc.
people keep telling me I can convert them, but I would much rather be able to install another player that supports those formats straight away so no conversions have to be done.
    does something like this exist??
    Cheers,
    Matt :-)

There are various additional video player apps for the N95; SmartMovie, Core Player, DivX player, etc.
In any case, if the video files you are trying to use is using display resolution, frame rates, or other attributes that the phone or those players cannot handle, you will still have to use a converter first.
Search this application catalog for other video players apps (like those I mentioned above):

  • Mp4 video files can not be played on this iphone

I use iPhone 3GS. I use iTunes 10.5.1.42. I converted mp4 files from ImTOO mp4 converter. this is the exclusive conversion tool for iPhone. I was using this tool for my iPhone 2G & 3G with iTunes 10.2.1. But which I use the latest iTunes it says "sample.mp4"was not copied to the iPhone "my iPhone" because it can not be played on this iPhone.
Even I tried to sync with the sample mp4 files from apple support site. That too doesnt work.

    Hey luiscarlos61789,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are receiving an alert when attempting to sync a video to your iPhone 5s. The following resource provides more information on this message:

  • I am running a video but can not see play/stop button, please help

I am trying to play a video using firefox. it is playing well but the only problem is that I can not control it because there is no play/stop or puase button. Any suggestion to fix this problem?

It may help to know what the site is and what the player is that you are using. Try right clicking the picture does that give you any options.
Try this Firefox video, it should play natively in Firefox5, and have controls both on screen and available from right click
    * on page https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forums/contributors/707301
    * stream http://blip.tv/file/get/MichaelVerdi-MeetMichelle153.webm
Oddly when I play that on Firefox 6.0a2, even in safe mode and with plugins disabled it is very bad stop frame with much of the audio missing, even if saved and played from hdd. If play or stream it using standalone VLC player it is good enough for me to notice the camera shake.

  • What video formats can iMovie edit?

I was wondering what video formats iMovie can edit? Such as mpeg 2, mpeg 4, etc...
the specific reason I'm asing is that I'm considering having some vhs tapes converted to DVD's, which I'm assuming would convert them to mpeg 2...and was wondering if they would be editable in iMovie?

    Hi Vapor_action:
    Stop!
Seriously-you will be MUCH better off if you have them convert them to DV tape for import to iMovie. DVD uses a different compression and it is a real pain to get them into iMovie. In fact, it is easier to get the VHS to iMovie than DVD in my opinion.

  • IPhone 4S video format - can I change it now?

    Hi Community ,
I shot some really funny vision of my dog on my iPhone 4S. I dragged it into the timeline of a video editing program which informed me that it's NTSC (30fps) format, not PAL. I really need it at 25fps. Is there a way to convert it to 25fps or am I stuck with it now at the wrong format?
I'd like to submit the vision to funniest home video (Australia) but they won't accept NTSC format.
Thanks so much for your help,
    Debbie

Hi Debbie, I read up a bit on these video formats and from what I gather there are no freeware converters that are reliable. Mac OS X doesn't seem to have a native utility that could address this either. You may even have to look for some shareware softwares unfortunately. Please exercise caution whenever you download software of this nature from a 3rd party.

My ipod nano 5th gen. won't play movies or tv shows but it plays them on itunes.  When I click  on it the screen flashes black. I have tried taking the videos off my ipod and then putting them back on but it still won't work. what should i do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Is there any way to download music videos from You Tube and play them on a 2nd generation Nano?

I want to play you tube music videos on my IPod. I can download them as MP4 but it will not accept them. Does anyone know what file format I could use to get music and video? I know I can convert them to MP3 and play them on IPod. I want to play the music videos too.
    Does any one know? JEKjoy

Have you been able to successfully import these videos into iTunes?  If so, use iTunes built in converter to convert it to a more iTunes friendly format. To do this, highligh the video and choose "Create iPhone or iPod version" from the Advanced drop down menu in iTunes.
When it has finished converting, try syncing the new version to your Nano.

  • Can Apple TV play videos on TV from NAS Drive?

I have a problem playing transferred home movies on a flat screen tv through the “TV Out” feature of my Iphone 4.
I have captured about a TB worth of various home movie videos from VHS tape to my PC hard drive. I then converted these AVI files to M4V to play on Iphone & Itunes. I then copied these M4V video files to a Western Digital “My Book Live” NAS Drive which allows me to view any video using my Iphone, via a WD app, without using Iphone internal memory.
The problem is that I cannot play these videos through “TV Out” on my Iphone when connected to a flat screen TV. Apple techs told me that TV Out is only good with videos recorded from Iphone and stored in the internal memory of Iphone.
    So my questions are:
1- Can I access my NAS drive (which has all videos stored) and play those videos on flat screen TV using Apple TV and Air Play?
2- Does Apple TV only play videos stored on the internal memory of Apple products (Iphone, Ipad, Itunes) or will Apple TV mirrior my NAS Drive videos, via Iphone app, onto the TV?
Any advice is greatly appreciated .
    Sincerely,
    Don S.

Hello affiatati7 (and all others working with a WD MyBook Live Duo NAS)
Good news; you can access Movie files directly from a NAS without using iTunes.
    Well, at least I can...
I have a WD MyBook Live Duo NAS. I also have an iPad/iPhone app for to access this NAS (WD 2go Pro).
From my iPad I connect with the NAS, select a movie to play, and stream it to my Apple TV (I think the WD app uses the standard iOS videoplayer, so streaming to AppleTV is supported).
That's all there is to it.
The movies stored on the WD Nas are in .m4v format (MP4) and placed in a share that is capable of streaming (DLNA). Most modern NAS devices let you set up one or more 'shares' for streaming.
I keep my iTunes Library only for music and apps, and is not stored on my NAS.
So I play movies without iTunes and from my NAS.
I don't know how all this technically works, but it works. I can even use the Apple TV remote-control to pause and play the movie, without using the iPad again.
Maybe you should check if your NAS has an accompanying App for smartphone and/or tablet, and trie it out.
p.s.: In my situation it only works with my iPad. I've tried my iPhone, but the WD App crashes as soon as I try to play a movie.
