Lotsa Songs MIA

I don't know if this is related to the recent upgrade. I upgraded about a week ago and have been out of town since, just chomping at at bit and slightly annoyed.
Seems that after my upgrade the number of songs on my IPOD (5g, 30gb black) is 1/6 of what is in my iTunes library -- noticed this on the plane when I couldn't do anything about it. I just don't know what happened. I have done an ipod update a few times and the songs don't to copy over. They were all there a week ago.
I don't know what to do. Try to go back to the previous ipod version, find a utility to copy the missing songs over, clean the ipod (not sure how) and start from scratch. Something I haven't mentioned.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

I'm kinda confused.
Originally, it looks as if you had iTunes set to Automatically update only certain playlists and it did not put all the songs on your iPod.
You did change it to Automatically update all and it worked.
"but I did change my settings to include all playlists and it seemed to work"
Then you set it back to Automatically update only certain playlists and again, your entire library is not on the iPod.
"Do you think there's any harm in changing my settings to select which playlists?
Actually tried it and the 80% of my songs once again disappeared"
TO me, this simply looks as if when you select Automaticcaly update only selected playlists, those playlists do not contain all the songs in your library.
Yes, but it used to work fine before, since the upgrade it really doesn't. I created some of the playlists on the PC just to burn CDs -- not to listen to on the Ipod. This is one quirk I live with -- at least for the time being.
I don't understand what you are having a problem with.
Set it to Automatically update all playlists.
If you create a playlist to burn CDs, delete it after you burn the CD.
Next time you sync the iPod, it will get deleted off the iPod.

  • Can't access songs in iTunes. There are exclamation marks on about half of my library. When I try to play them I get: "Can't find the file" notice and iTunes asks me to locate each song. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I had not opened my iTunes in weeks. When I opened it today, most of the songs in my library had exclamation marks beside them and when I clicked on them got the message: "the song could not be used because the original file cannot be found", then asks me if I want to locate it. When I press "locate" tab I am led to iTunes folders and have to hunt around for the song. Some songs I can't find in the folders. Any ideas as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.

at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work

Sometimes when I play songs in Itunes by double clicking on them, Itunes will place the song as the first one on the album.  It will chnage the order of the songs on the album, and I can not switch them back to the correct order.  This onloy seems to happen when I double-click on the song to play it in itunes.  If I just hit play, this doesnt happen.  As a result, I have several albums now in which the songs are in the wrong order.  Its very frustrating, as this error then transfers over to my ipod every time I sync it.  When I choose the info. for the songs, it has them correctly listed (i.e., it lists the songs as being #1 of 19 on the CD, for example).  But then the song will have placed by Itunes as #5 of 19 for whatever reason.  Itunes does not do this every time, but does it with enough frequency to be maddening.  Any thoughts?

  • ITunes can't locate songs in my library.

It took me a while to point iTunes 11.0.2 (26) 64-bit in 10.8.3 to my existing itunes library that is also used by my 10.6.x system.  Once I did though I went to a playlist and clicked on the song and found that even though it updated my library files (Itunes Library and Itunes Library.xml) it did not actually scan the songs in the library because it couldn't locate the song.  I located the song and it asked me if I wanted it to use that info to find other lost songs which I said yes to.  It proceeded to not even find the rest of the songs in the same directory I had pointed it to.  Now I have about 4165 songs missing!  *** iTunes?!?!  I have NO MISSING SONGS under 10.6.x and I'm using the same library files and the  same library structure and everything.  IS there a way to do this other than repointing iTunes to the existing library?  Please help me or I will be forced to write iTunes off.  Which in my opinion is getting easy as the whole program is getting worse and worse from a cpl years ago.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Too Many disk I/O tasks (-10022) error playing song after edits

I have been fighting Logic 9 throwing the "Too Many disk I/O tasks (Elastic Audio) (-10022)" error when playing back a song with 12 tracks of audio AFTER I cut across 8 tracks (of drums) and move regions around. The Disk I/O indicator never shows more than 1-2 bars, tops when this error is thrown. While writing this up and troubleshooting, the problem has seemed to sort itself out, but only after doing some peculiar steps.
    *System is MacPro 2x2.26 Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, Mackie Onyx 1620 recording to 500GB WD MyBook Pro over FW800. I/O Buffer = 128.
    1) Grouped the 8 tracks of drums (there are 3 takes on each track). Play back song. No problems.
    2) Cut the drums at bars 73, 81, 105 and 109.
    3) Drag-copied the regions from bars 105-109 to 73-81.
    4) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    5) Increase buffer size to 256.
    6) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    7) Increase buffer size to 512.
    8) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    - Thought this might be a disk problem.
    9) I copied the project with all the files to the internal Seagate and open the project.
    10) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    - Thinking this is not a disk problem.
    11) Open the project on the original WD external drive.
    12) Mute all regions an all drum tracks except the kick.
    13) The song plays back normally.
    14) Un-mute regions on 1 track and playback and repeat for each track.
    15) The song plays back normally until the 8th drum track is un-muted, then the error is thrown.
    16) Mute and un-mute the regions on 8th drum track.
    17) The song now plays back normally. Error no longer thrown.
Looks like after making the edits, muting all the regions and un-muting them 1 by one might have cleared this up right away.
Is anyone else is experiencing something similar? If so, how are you working around this?

No, didn't solve it yet, after I'm done completing work to meet a deadline, I will do some experimenting and see what I can figure out. But so far I've had this phasing issue occur in two different sessions on two different rigs (both Mac Pro dual-quad core with lotsa RAM)...
One test that anyone could try... to really max it out... take one single source and record it onto 20 tracks at once... or I guess you could just record one track and then duplicate it 19 times, whatever. Group all these tracks, keep `em all at the same level. Then take a listen to all tracks at once using some good headphones.
Then put all the tracks in flex mode and do some flexing, flex every single quarter note this way and that way for three full measures or so, whatever. Then play it back again with headphones. If you hear ANY hint of phase shifting, then you are experiencing what I am experiencing.
For anyone who might not be familiar with the "phase shifting" sound I speak of, it pretty much will sound as if you are running your tracks through a classic "phase shifter" effect pedal or whatever. If using headphones, it'll seem like the audio starts swirling around in your head like some wacky stereo effect, frequency response will change and shift, etc.
I've noted that I have not always heard phase issues when flexing, it seem to be a bit inconsistent. It may be because I've been working in some very large sessions, maybe in my situations Logic was already being heavily taxed and then the extra flexing just put it over the edge. Don't know. Will do some testing perhaps next week.
But, I'd say everyone should be careful about this before bouncing forever to disk and then maybe deleting all your old raw audio, because if you permanently write in some wacky phase shifting between your group of drum tracks and have no original raw files left, you'll be in very big trouble... I don't think there would be any way to fix that. In a professional level mix, that type of issue would stick out like a sore thumb. I guess one fix would be to apply a phase shifter effect across the entire drum bus... on purpose... as some sort of artistic statement... hey, it might sound cool!
This whole issue has made me realize how incredibly important it is for DAW tracks to remain truly phase locked at all times. Been working with DAWs for years now and never really thought about it. In one regard, this is a lot to ask... to make sure your 30-odd tracks or whatever are always dead in time with each other, to the sample. It's certainly of critical importance, at least for multiple tracks of the same exact source (like when you have 12 mics on a drum kit etc).
Actually, perfect time synch is just as critical for even a mere TWO mics on a given source... any stereo recording. Once one track goes out of "synch" with the other, even by a minute amount, just for a short amount of time, you will HEAR it.,.. and it won't be good... unless you desire a wacky phase shifting effect.

  • Song file "could not be found."

I've been using iTunes and my iPod problem free for a couple years now. I've had a house guest staying with me/sharing my computer, and today was unable to access many of my songs in my iTunes library. I re-installed the most recent iTunes program, which didn't change the outcome.
When I click on random songs, I get a message that says, "The song 'xyz' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" The song is not located in previous iTunes libraries or in the music folder on my hard drive. When I did check the music folder, only a fraction of my music is located there. I'm not sure where the rest is or how to find it.
Clearly I've learned why backing up is so critical the hard way; is there anything I can do to recover my music/solve this problem? I have all of it on my iPod, but I'm assuming if I connect that to the computer, I'll mess it up too.

yes, I'm having the same problem, instead every time i open itunes it will have ti missing icon beside the song. when i quit itunes and reopen it it tells me the same thin only it is all different songs but the other one are no longer there, they are MIA. Ever since iTunes 9 came out all I've had is problems with it. Any way to get my music back?

  • Search iTunes music library specifically for songs with "Stop Time" selected in Options?

I made a burn to cd playlist where each song played only the first minute.  Now, I want to restore those songs back to playing the full time, and the playlist and cd are MIA.  But, those songs in the main music library still have the stop time marked.
Is there a way to search just for songs that have that check-marked?

No. Sort the library on duration, select all tracks that are 1 minute long, Get Info. Put a tick against the blank Stop Time box on the Options tab and click OK.

  • One song stops after a few seconds on a new ipod touch, need some help

So I just got a 16gb iPod Touch as a gift and it works fine, all my songs play fine except for one of my songs that stops after like 7 seconds of playing. If I have it on repeat it will keep doing the same thing but if I forward the song a bit it will play fine till the end. Now this song plays fine on my PC, and it has played fine on my previous iPod video. Any one have any idea on why this is happening? It's kinda scaring me since I don't have the receipt for this iPod Touch and thats one of my favorite songs.

I had the same problem with one particular track I downloaded off Limewire earlier today and I've downloaded lotsa stuff on there over the years. I guess I'm fortunate compared to some of you with like 10 songs affected.
Anyways a little troubleshooting helps here. First off, it shouldn't be happening with any track downloaded off iTunes. Those are clean as a whistle in my experiences although iPod touch had some bug issues with songs stopping few seconds into them when they first came out last year. That problem appears to have been rectified unless you guys haven't done an update lately on your units.
So if you're downloading off Limewire or some other peer-to-peer service, you're probably getting a corrupted file that is causing this problem. I tried a couple different file downloads of the same song from different users and parameters until I found one that finally worked. It is true that a corrupted file will play on the older iPods because in my case it did on my 80GB and on my computer. It's only iPod touch that appears finicky about what it wants to play.
This is most likely therefore not a bug specific issue with Apple that you can rely on fix. You guys are probably gonna have to find new source files for your affected songs until you get one that works. Pain in the arse no doubt but the only real solution.
    Cheers!

  • Anyway to automatically relink random missing song files in iTunes library? Random songs have "!" while other songs in same album folder are fine.

I can manually relink a missing song by navigating to the album folder in my iTunes media folder where all of my music is stored, but there are hundreds of "missing" songs in my 100+ GB Library. Any way to get iTunes to reconcile the library in a more automated fashion? I am fearful of solutions that may introduce a ton of duplicates.
Would also like to know why this has happened so I can prevent it in future. Why are some songs in an album coming up missing and others in the same root folder playing fine?? It's not like my library is missing, 80% of my music is fine.
My MAC iTunes library is organized by iTunes and all new media is copied into the iTunes folder (which I have "living" on an external USB 500GB hard drive, which I sometimes use with my PC Laptop when I travel - I don't do this often and it has never caused a problem before.)

UPDATE: I contact the developer fo the iTunes Track CPR script just to give him some feedback. His reply, "
Thanks for letting me know. CPR needs a good looking at. But have you tried "Music Folder Files Not Added"?
    http://dougscripts.com/466"
I used that script and it found all of the MIA "missing" songs and then added them back to my iTunes library (took about 7 hours to auto add about 2000+ songs.) This process also created duplicates, but I was able to use the "Manage Duplicates" feature of iTunes under the File menu to see a list of all duplicates; then I deleted all of the songs with the"!" next to their names (took about 45 minutes.)
So I think in the end this did save me a lot of time and aggrevation.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Chris!

  • Songs Lost From Phone When Syncing

I recently purchased 18 songs directly from my iPhone. I tried to transfer these songs to my computer but they were no longer on my phone. They just disappeared.
I've checked the FAQ's for lost songs and tried all the suggestions, but nothing has solved my problem.
I have also received and paid the bill for all the missing songs.

    Here is what happened:
My computer refused to let me buy the Beatle Boxed set for reason unknown as i usualy do not have any problem paying for anything on itunes, i supposed it was related to the heavy traffic apple was experiencing at this time of year. A few hours later while having my iPad at hand i decided to try again, this time successfully, the songs (200+) downloaded alright. I was able to play any of them the following day. Then i decided to transfer them back to the computer using the transfer my purchase menu.
I realised almost immediately something was wrong as iTunes reported only 105 songs being transfered. Afterwards the iPad synched which resulted in the files being deleted from the device. I checked both the library and harddrive, the files are really missing there is nothing.
I checked the tranfer purchase several times to no avail. So far the song are considered MIA...
As far as i know the song disapeared after the billing, since there was a day between the time i bought it on the iPad and the time i transfered them on the computer.
I contacted iTunes i hope to be able to download again the whole thing.

  • Cover art for songs will not "save" in iTunes 7

The songs on my PC have corrected tags, lyrics and an associated picture (cover art). When I import all the songs into iTunes, many do not indicate that they have any cover art. The lyrics and the tag are ok. I used the Ctrl+i to manually add the cover art and it seems OK. When I exit the "Get Info" box, and go back into the same song, the cover art is missing, again. I also did the drag-and-drop method into the artwork viewer at the lower left. It seems to work OK too until I change songs, then it goes MIA. I have compared the jpg pixel sizes and file sizes to some that work but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Help!

See this thread for a (brief) discussion of the issue you're probably seeing. iTunes does not properly handle ID3v2 tags which are larger than 127 bytes (which includes pretty much any image). The reason it works when you add the album art in iTunes is because it saves the information in your iTunes Library file rather than in the ID3 tags.

  • ITunes issue on IPhone 5s - songs don't show up

I upgraded the operating system on my iPhone 5s to 8.1.2. I manually synced songs from an old Macbook Pro with ITunes 11.4 (the most recent version). (I can not update to iTunes 12 because my computer is not supported.) The issue is that 11 voice memos that were synced to the iPhone 5s do not show up. They do not show up as songs by the "song titles" I gave them or as the "voice memo" genre. The playlist I created for them shows up as empty. These voice memos were originally recorded on the iPhone 5s. The weird thing is that when I plug the iPhone 5s into my Macbook Pro via USB, the voice memos show up as having been transferred.  I have tried reboot the iPhone and resetting it.

After hours of resync-ing and rebooting, I figured out what was going on. The voice memos are on the phone but they only show up in the voice memo app. They do not show up in the iTunes app. I don't need to play them in iTunes so this solves the problem for me. Hopefully, my experience will save someone else some time.

  • ITunes saves dropped songs to wrong folder

Because of the size of my MP3 ad WAV music collection, I store my song files onto a SAS RAID array instead in my user's Music folder.  The path to this folder ls "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music".  This has worked fine for quite a while, but I've built a new Lion system for audio work and things have gotten odd.
My starting settings in the Advanced section are both Keep iTunes folder organizaed and Copy files off.  I then drag and drop the folder into the Music panel of iTunes and after a few minutes, all 50K± songs are imported.  I then go into preferences and eable Copy Songs for any new music.  Last night I imported Fr/action's entire library and the import succeeded, but this morning I noticed that the songs had been imported int9o a new Music folder within my specified folder - "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music/Music".  While doesn't present a problem with playback or logically managing the collection, I'm curious as to why iTunes added the new folder instead of just copying the new group / album / song hierarchy into the defined folder?
Is this a bug, or am I missing some setting?

  • I tried to sync some new songs bought from iTunes into my ipod using my laptop, (for the first time).  It would not add the new songs to the ipod.  I tried several times, with same result.  I never had this problem using my desk top computer.

I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so.  The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however.  Have no idea why.  I thought this happened automatically.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • How do you delete duplicate songs from your iPhone that do not show up in your iTunes library?

everytime i purchase songs on itunes and sync them to my iphone 4, the songs downloads twice. one as the actual song, and the second one doesnt do anything. when you click on it, it just skips to the next song and doesnt play anything. also this second song has this cirlce dot thing next to it when i am scrolling through my songs in my music...so how do i get rid of this second download? its really annoying to have and it wont let me delete it off my phone. alsoooo since it doesnt show up in my itunes library, i cant delte it off there either! HELP PLEASE

On the springboard, locate the app you want to delete. For this example, I’ll use WeatherBug.
Tap and hold down the icon of the application you want to delete. After a few seconds your screen will start to “wiggle” and an X will appear next to each of the apps you’ve installed via the App Store.
Tap the X next to the icon of the app you want to remove. When prompted, selectDelete.
    And now it’s gone.
If the application is listed in your iTunes Applications as well, you’ll want to remove it from there – or else it will re-install the next time you sync. Alternately you can keep the app in your iTunes Applications, and set iTunes not to sync all applications, just the ones you want to keep. See the Applications tab of your device the next time it’s connected in iTunes for syncing options.
