Loud Fan Noice, Single User Mode?

My iMac makes really loud fan noises when it's on
There's no problem with it, but the fan is running all time and making loud noises.
So I looked for help, and some say about starting in single-user mode.
What exactly is it and what does it do to my computer?
Is it really necessary?

Did you do the above from your Tiger DVD?
If you received errors did you click the Repair Disk button?
Were there errors that the Utility could not repair? If so, then you will need to use a stronger utility programs. The top 3rd party utility programs that are favorites/recommended in these forums are the following:

If you did not repair from your Tiger DVD:
Repairing permissions from the Tiger DVD
Boot up from your Tiger Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

Fan issues after entering Single User mode

Earlier, I went into Single User mode to run an application called Applejack. When my computer first loaded up, my fan became twice as loud as it normally does. I figured that would return to normal once I restarted my computer, but when I went back to my usual setup my fan is still incredibly loud. I attempted to restart my computer again, but that didn't help. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Just to clarify a few things, the fan begun to act up as soon as I entered Single User mode. I've tried looking into my System Preferences settings, but changing my Processor Performance doesn't seem to do anything unless there's something I need to do along with changing the setting. Thanks in advance!

And just to be clear, in Single User Mode the computer's feedback about temps is not functioning... so your Mac assumes the worst, and keeps those suckers going full blast.
I find this to be the case when it has crashed and I re-start in SUM. But if I shutdown normally, usually you can start in SUM and be ok fan noise wise.

Screaming Fans ,10.4.3., and Single User Mode.

I wanted to add my experience with the screaming fan problem and 10.4.3.
When I ran Disk Utility and used the verify disk option I received some minor errors and proceeded to boot the OS X install disk and run Disk Utility from there. When I did I received no errors. Rebooted back to 10.4.3 and reran disk utility and received the same minor errors. So I read one of the Mac sites that stated that one needed to run in single user mode and execute fsck f. This where the fun started.
When I went into single user mode the fans went wild. But I knew this to be normal and proceeded with repairing the disk (which was successful as evident with no errors being reported while booted to the desktop and running live verify disk. But before I got to that point the fans remained screaming after the reboot to 10.4.3. I reset the PRAM and NVRAM but to no avail. The fans would not quite down. The fix turned out to be very simple I unplugged the computer (after shutting down) for about 15 seconds. Re plugged it in and it was fine after that. Fans back to normal! I replicated the problem applied the same fix and again every thing was normal.
I just thought I would pass this on to the iMac community.

The problem being screaming fan and the fix being resetting SMU? (unplug for 15secs). So how did you replicate it, and is it really fixed now?

I Cannot Complete Single User Mode (fsck)!!

Hello all.
I have the new iMac 20" Rev. B running on Tiger OS X 10.4.1, using wireless keyboard and mouse (I know I have to use a wired keyboard to complete Single User Mode)
When I do a 'Command Key + S key' after a restart
b using either the wireless or wired keyboard...
The "usual" string of text would appear on the black screen in Single User Mode, but it stops short of the below:

If you wish to boot the system,but stay in single user mode:

The last line just stays there without further prompts, I type anything on the keyboard and nothing happens, after a while the fans will pump up full speed and loud, waiting for a little longer also see no continuation of prompts etc...
HELP! May I know what is wrong here? The mac was just set up since Sun, I couldn't and wouldn't believe that after a few days that the OS system is already somehow "screwed"??

Hi a brody, thanks for the reply, I guess as much I'll have to go through that process again...! The fact and reason I am so reluctant is that my previous iMac 20" "fried" its logic board and was in the shop for almost 2 weeks then they told me there was a worldwide shortage of logic boards, so they replaced me with this new iMac 20" Rev.B, I got it late last week and just started setting it up last Sun... and till late Monday when I found out about the fsck problem.
Earlier tonight I just did the Archieve and Install and brought back all my data, files and stuffs, I think doing something like this within a week is really quite tedious and tiring...
For both occasions when I install Tiger, did its software update and also the rest of the software I only have the mac, keyboard, mouse and the ethernet cable (cable modem) connect to the mac, nothing else, and I repair permisson after each update and install...
Ya, you may be right that there may be something wrong with the mac, but c'mon, my 2nd "brand new mac" and it's like this??!! I can't really take it anymore??!!
Anyway, I think I am going to hold on to doing the reformat and testing it, like I say, it is 'working fine' right now, no any indication of glitch or anything, and besides unable to complete Single User Mode... well, I don't think "it is really that bad"...?? (me making sense??)
Maybe I will do the full reformat and reinstall when the next OS Update arrives or something go amiss with the mac, then I'll take that opportunity to test it...
Maybe in the mean time, I'll just ring up AppleCare and see what they say...?

Single User Mode: Searching for root...

My 2 year old unplugged my PowerMac iMac G5 (single) and now it won't start up.
I was finally able to boot up off of Disk Warrior and replace the directory, but it won't start up past the gray Apple screen. The fan comes on after about 45 seconds and blows hard. Then, I get the circle with a line through it, in gray. I've never seen that on a mac.. the international "no" sign.
When trying to start up in Single User Mode, I get a long list of stuff either disabled, not found, missing etc and then it starts writing to the screen every 30 seconds a line like:
Still searching for root.
I've tried pulling the back off, resetting the SMU, starting up in Safe Mode, etc.
This has happened with storms before and I can usually get it back.
I don't have original install discs.

When you say you have "OSX" but not the "original install disks" do you mean the mac originally came with an earlier version and you don't have those disks, but you have a retail copy of Tiger?
The circle with the slash means that Open Firmware cannot find BootX. Basically, I think this means that Open Firmware recognises the startup volume as such but cannot hand control to the operating system at all. BootX is what it uses to get the operating system going. Without this, as you've seen, you cannot make even single-user mode.
What is SMU?
*Is your data backed up? If not, prioritise that unless you can afford to loose it.*
Does DiskWarrior repair permissions? If not and you have the Tiger retail version, try running Disk Utility to do that. I don't think this will help, but it won't hurt.
Do you have another Mac? If so and you have the retail Tiger, you might be able to use Pacifist to replace BootX (in /System/Library/CoreServices). Alternatively, if the other Mac is running the same version of the OS and is also a PPC Mac, you could try copying the file from that machine.
Before you do any of this (with the exception of the permissions repair), try to backup any data you need if that's at all possible.

IMac G5 won't boot in normal and safe mode, but will from single-user mode

Hello everyone,
I'm quite new here, so I try to do my best if you have a question.
Yesterday, someone nearby me had a iMac G5 (Powermac8,1), and he sayd, that the computer sometimes will boot, sometimes not.
I did test it, I thought it was running fine, but when I played some music in iTunes, it was stuck on 9 seconds, and crashed (with a kernel panic). The guy also sayd, that there was nothing important on the computer, so a clean install was fine.
Now, the problem is, that it will not boot in normal mode (without anything pressed on boot), also it won't in safe mode (shift-boot), but it will, when I enter single-user mode, mount the hard drive and exit from single-user mode so it will go futher on booting. Sometimes it will not, and immediately gives you a kernel panic in single-user mode, but it will 90 percent of the time.
Then you've got another problem: when it's running in the normal desktop from single-user mode, it'll be stuck after some time again. If I look into the Kernel Panic file created, most times it's because of Spotlight indexing, so I disabled that.
He also gave me the disks (Apple Hardware Test and Extra Applications, and iMac G5 Mac OS X Install Disks 1-3) that came with the Mac. He sayd that I could use them, but I think he didn't test out the SuperDrive, because when I insert a disk, it will try to read, but it will make 2 same sounds, and quits after 10 tries, when it will spit the cd out. Also normal (audio) disks.
Also, I must hurry with the commands for mounting and exiting in single-user mode, or it will just not boot.
In all cases, after 30-45 seconds from pressing the power button, the fan will start blowing at full speed, and it will stop after the exit command in Single-user mode. That's weird.
I can't do anything with the SuperDrive, I can't normally boot in Mac OS X except for Single-user mode (but I don't think he would like to do that every time the computer boots up), and I have very limited time when Mac OS X arrived on the desktop.
When booting in Verbose mode, it will be stuck on this:
AppleSMU::PMU vers = 0x000d004c, SPU vers = 0x15, SDB vers = 0x01,
(and sometimes ends with a kernel crash by fsck_hfs)
Things I've tried (without any success):
- /sbin/fsck -fy (in single-user mode)
- Disabling Spotlight and mds

Thank you for your support! This reply is a little bit late, because I was to the camping this weekend.
The only thing I sure do know, is that the iMac has a bad SuperDrive. That's one problem, but I don't really wanna use it, and you fix everything by Single-user mode and when I get to the desktop to test things and change stuff in the Preference Panes.
What also came to my mind was that there also is a problem with the videocard (driver), because sometimes when I boot into Single-user mode, I can see some white pixels which aren't supposed to be there. And when booting from SUM you can see that some of the colors are different and there are weird patterns on the screen.
I also tried to setup a NetBoot server on this computer (MacBook Mid 2010) with just Lion 10.7.4 on it, but I'm not that expert and I didn't really find the good posts on the Internet, although I tried it with the Server applications and both Server applications and DeployStudio. But I didn't succeed.
I don't really like buying a new FireWire hard disk or external FireWire dvd reader/writer, except if it has USB support, because my MacBook doesn't support FireWire, and I really wanna make use of it then.
If I know more or have fixed it, I will surely post again here with what I did to fix it (if no one else has posted here already ).

Powerbook won't start, got message i don't understand in single-user mode

PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
About a week ago my powerbook (purchased in Dec '03, running 10.3.9) froze while I was using it. I had to manually shut it off, and then it would not restart (got stuck on grey screen with gear). I was able to start it up again once in Safe Mode, at which point I downloaded and ran Macaroni. Upon reboot, it wouldn't start up at all, staying on the grey screen for 15-20 minutes before I gave up. Now, I've tried starting it in Single-user mode. At the command I typed "fsck -fy" and the following message was returned:
"Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
Root device is mounted read-only
If you want to make modifications to files,
run ' /sbin/fsck -y' first and then '/sbin/mount -uw /'
localhost:/ root# "
Does anyone have any idea what this means?
I am expecting the worse, I made a bootable back up in august, but was hoping to get it to start at least once more so i could update that back up or email myself some files. The only other possibly relevant info is that when it froze last week it started making really really loud repetitive noises (as if the hard drive was stuck?). For a while there I was also hearing an odd humming noise whenever i plugged in the AC adapter.
Well, any help would be truly appreciated.

The two observations may be related. It is possible that the power adapter has developed a fray or short, and is giving insufficient power for the hard drive to operate properly. Do you have another Mac you can connect the machine to via Target Disk Mode after getting a replacement power adapter?
I would also get a copy of Prosoft Data Rescue and an external hard drive that is Firewire at least as big as the internal hard drive. That will give you a chance to recover information if it is at all reachable.
If the directory is damaged Alsoft Disk Warrior may be able to repair it, but I'd only run that after determining Prosoft Data Rescue is unable to rescue any usable data.
I would not attempt to run any norton utilities on it, and if you have in the past don't do it again, as Disk Doctor and Speed Disk have been known to damage Mac OS X more than fix it.

Freeze in Single User mode

Hi, my iMac G5 is freezing right away when I boot in single user mode. I mean right away at the prompt. I cannot even start typing anything. The fan start at 100% and I have to hard shutdown the machine. This happens ALL the time I boot in single user mode. EVERY TIME no exceptions.
I am trying to run a memory test (using MEMTEST) to see if my 1gig memory is defective. My iMac freeze randomly without me able to find a consistent pattern.
Questions:
1- Does the freeze at boot could be a problem with me using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
2 - If not, the fact of freezing at boot in Single User mode a possible explanation of memory problem (does the single user mode lock-up memory that could be bad?) as my iMac do not freeze (for a while) when booted in multi-user mode.
My setup: 2 ghtz iMac G5, 1x1gig Kingston PC3200 memory (sold and installed by my Apple reseller). My G5 is 7 month old still under warranty.
I am new to the Mac - I switched from PCs.

With the PC-Viewsonic keyboard, Pierre, the symptoms you describe are exactly what you would expect.
Third party, non Apple, keyboards, even wired ones, can't usually be used to do anything beyond simply starting up in SU mode (you can start them up and get to the prompt, but when you are there you can't do anything further).
The same applies to Apple Wireless keyboards when running versions of the OS 10.4.2 or earlier, or if the bluetooth firmware isn't up to date. Again, you CAN start them up in SU mode, but you can't do anything with them after you reach the prompt.
As far as the BT issue goes, as you say its running 10.4.6 I'm beginning to wonder if there was a problem with one of your OS updates. I'd be inclined to download a fresh copy of the full 10.4.6 Combo updater, and run it again. Probably worth running the Blue Tooth firmware update again, too, just in case.

If you have access to another firewire equipt Mac then you could also use Target disk mode (connect the two together with a firewire cable, then start up your own computer while holding down the t key. ) Your own HD would then appear on the desktop of the other computer as another HD, and you can then proceed to remove or shift the same .plist files (on your own HD) identified in point 4 or 5 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464

IN case you haven't found out which I did, just to let you know, with the latest OS 10.4.3 update, now you can boot into Single User Mode (fsck) with your
b wireless keyboard
and still at the same time
b continue to complete fsck process with your wireless keyboard!!
No more switching to a regular wired keyboard just to complete the process!

Bazzar Behavour? single user mode

If I boot my G5 into Single User mode, the fans will slowly pick up speed and seem to go on getting faster and fastr. On exiting S/U mode and mounting the full desktop the fans will return to normal.- it's only in s-u mode that I have this problem....
Is there a daemon or other which checks and controls these fans,- and is it not working in single user mode? any diagnostic tools I should use to check temps and fan speeds?

The fans are software controlled, and the software which controls them is not active in Single User mode; in this case, the fans will go as fast as they can.

Data back up from Single User Mode

Hello,
I have a problem with my 700 MHz iBook, dual USB, with OS X 10.3.9.
Unfortunately the OS doesn't start up because of "overlapped extent allocation" problem...
I would like to re-install the complete OS but before doing it, I would like to back up some directories.
Is it possible to save some data, by connecting an Ipod or some sort of external peripheral, from the Single User mode?
If yes, how can I do it?

Manually fix Overlapped Extent Allocation Errors without Disk Warrior
Overlapped overlapped extent allocation errors can be the bane of any Mac user's existence. Often, these errors go unnoticed until the problem becomes visible: your Mac might refuse to boot, crash unexpected, or worse, critical data might disappear from the Finder. Disk Utility can detect, but not fix overlapped extent allocation errors, and certain third-party utilities, such as Alsoft Diskwarrior, can fix them, but generally without reporting the consequences.
Overlapped extent allocation error occur when the file system thinks that two files are occupying the same area on the hard disk, hence overlapping on the same "inode," which is the structure which holds the location of the data blocks the file occupies, and also file permissions and flags.
Clearing the "overlapped" or "overallocated" extent allocation essentially means that you'll have to lose some data, because the only way to remove the overlap is to delete the file that's occupying the inode. So, if you suspect, or find out, that the guilty file is a critical system file that resides in one of the hidden system directories such as /etc /var /usr/ or visible system directories such as /System or /Library, and you don't want to reinstall the whole OS (which might not fix the overlapped extent allocation anyway), it's good to have another disk available to copy the files back to your original disk if necessary: a second bootable hard drive or a firewire drive connected to your Mac when you remove the misbehaving file. Just make sure that when you copy the file back to your boot disk that the permissions are correct, so it's best to use the "ditto" command, so that all sticky bits, flags, and permissions are preserved.
In case you didn't know, you don't have to boot from an install CD in order to check for overlapped extent allocations. All you need to do is restart your Mac, while holding down command + S to boot in "single-user mode."
At the command prompt that appears, type:
$ fsck -fy
If you have an overlapped extent allocation, you'll see:
"Overlapped Extent Allocation" (File 123456d)
No matter how many times you run fsck -fy, you'll never be rid of the error.
So, simply issue the following command:
find / -inum 123456 -print
Note the "d" was dropped, or any extra letter that appears after the inode number.
The find will return a file name that matches with the inode number, and the path to that file. If you remove the file then the fsck will not return this error next time you run it.
However, before you can delete the file(s) in single-user mode, you'll need to mount the file system. Type:
$ mount -uw /
When done, issue the "sync" command, and that will flush the write cache so that all pending writes are written from memory to the disk. Also, since most OS X 10.3 Macs use the HFS+ Journaled file system, it might be a good idea to disable the journal before booting into single-user mode by typing:
$ sudo diskutil disableJournal /
then re-enable it when done fixing the overlapped extents and rebooting normally:
$ sudo diskutil enableJournal /

If you own Disk Warrior then it should be able to repair a drive with overlapped extents.
There are two backup utilities included in Unix - psync and rsync. You will find them in the /usr/bin/ directory. For documentation simply enter: man psync or man rsync. In order to write data while in single-user mode you need to issue the command: /sbin/mount/ -uw / (Note: there is a "space" between the "uw" and the "/".) To mount an external drive you will need to provide the mountpoint for it in place of the "/", e.g., "/Volumes/volname") without the quotes.

How do i repair my hard drive in single user mode when disk is full?

I have an old Macbook Pro 17" with an upgraded 500GB harddrive and 4GB memory. I'm running Mac OSX Lion.
Was hoping you could help me out. THis is the situation:
Long story short I spilt wine on my macbook and the screen went a bit blobby. Switched it off for a few days, removed the battery etc. etc. Opened it up cleaned out as much of the wine as possible, but unfortunately some of it came in behind the LCD, so now the screen has a nice red stain. Obviously I'm not going to try to clean that out of the LCD.
My Macbook Pro still worked for a few days after that, but then my harddrive gave up. I booted in the Recovery HD menu, verified the drive and I got the error "Keys out of order - This disk needs to be repaired, click Repair Disk." I attempted to repair the disk but got the error "Keys out of order - Disk Full Error - The volume could not be repaired".
Unfortnately of this 500GB I only have about 7GB free on it, as I have a huge iPhoto and iTunes library. I did make a TIme Machine backup of my user directory, but not the system files. I don't really want to do a clean install because:
1) I'm paranoid that there's something I did not fully back up
2) I don't want to have to download the whole Mac OSX Lion again. I should have made a USB bootable backup when I had the chance. I don't have access to a broadband connection.
What I feel are my viable options, are as follows:
1) I did buy a replacement internal 500GB harddrive, so I can probably try to make an image of the hard drive to this new drive, but not sure how. I believe it's through the Disk Utility with the "New Image" option but not sure how to go from there.
2) Start up in Single User Mode and delete some unnecessary files and re-attempt to run the fschk -fy utility again (I tried this earlier and got the same Disk Full Error). - the problem with this is, I'm not familiar with the command line and have no clue how to delete files. I don't know my way around Unix.
3) I can also probably attempt to make a Ghost Image or Acronis Image of the failed drive to this new drive, but not sure if Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image will be able to read this HFS drive - I believe it's possible as it's a simple hard drive clone.
If you can guide me in the best option - probably there is a better solution than my proposed ones above, I appreciate any feedback and comments you might have!

I've done an Apple Software Update but it didn't find an update for iPhoto.
One thing to note is, this library was originally created on iLife 08, upgraded to '09 and it stayed on that version. It hasn't een upgraded to iLife '11. It worked fine on my previous install of OSX Lion. How do I recover the library without upgrading to '11 ?

Kernel panic on MacPro in Single-User mode after memtest.

I've had about 7 kernel panics in about 7 days on a new MacPro. 2 gigs of RAM (Apple Installed). Fresh install of OSX (no user import). While going through the troubleshooting process I ran memtest in single user mode. Ran it all night no errors.
So in the morning I typed ctrl-c and then exit (i think)... it seemed to start the process of booting and I got another kernal panic. I've actually done this three times now.
I checked panic.log and all the error messages but 1 were the same. Including the ones I got in single-user mode (copied below).
Should I be able to gracefully exit out of single-user mode without a kernel panic?
Does this point to a RAM error even though memtest and AHD for that matter ran all night without finding anything?
I'm all set to try again (taking careful notes this time) to see if I can reproduce but I was hoping for some feedback first.

Clearly a memory related issue. It may also be that memtest doesn't know how to diagnose the new kind of memory and is reporting that back to the logs. Take it in to a service center to have all the boards replaced to make sure the issue isn't reproduceable with new memory. If it is, then I'd consider the slots on the logicboard a problem.

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.
