Hi, the fan on my late 2008 macbook pro is pretty loud I was wondering if anyone could help me fix this.

Try resetting SMC.

  • Loud Fans on Macbook Pro Retina

I just bought a new Macbook Pro 15" Retina and right out of the box the fans started revving up like a jet engine.  I hadn't even opened any programs yet.  They slowly ramp up, building to a peak volume in about 5 seconds, last for about a minute, and then ramp back down and stop.  Every 5 minutes.
I took the machine into the Apple store and they ran overnight diagnostics and told me that the machine passed all their tests and there was nothing they can do.  After dealing with this fiasco for about a week the problem persists.  It's too distracting to work with, and since I don't seem to have any other option I am taking advantage of Apple's 14-day return policy.
How many others have had this problem?  If you have, please chime in so that Apple engineers will become aware of this issue.
    Bottom Line
If you are having the same problem and are within the 14-day return window, do yourself a favor and save the trouble of trying to fix it. As of January 10, Apple engineers are unaware of the problem and the employees of the Apple store are going to tell you there's nothing that they can do.  If you are past the 14-day window... the guy at the Apple store told me that the next step would be to bring the computer back to Apple so they can send it to an engineer in Cupertino. This would mean you would be without your precious computer for a week or more.  Bummer.

    Hello,
I've had my laptop for a few weeks now. Almost every time it wakes from sleep, after about 30 seconds after logging in, the fans turn up to 5900 RPM. The fans gradually go back down to normal speeds (~2160 rpm) with no decernable change in temps (49-50 degrees C). The fan speed stays up for about a minute including the tapering off.
I am using SMC fan control to monitor core temp/fan speeds only. I have not changed the fan's speed profile.
Anyone else seeing this? I've tried resetting my SMC a few times already. I'm just trying to avoid going to the apple store and potentially not having my laptop for a week.

    Hi,
I had the same problem, one of my fans was making a loud noise even when my computer was just idling. It can occur because you dropped the computer, thus damaging one of the fans, or the fan broke down partially. I took mine to the Apple genius bar and they ordered a new fan for me and installed it in under a week (all covered by warranty). This is likely a hardware and not software issue, the only way for a fix is taking it to a genius bar.

  • Loud Fan in Macbook Pro

My Mac has been very slow intermitatley since I bought it - such as glitches in the login screen.. not able to log on for ages.  The fan also very loud, nearly sounds like its loose.

No sorry, it is just over a year. I moved back to Ireland were we dont have Apple stores but I was living in New York and visited the the Genius bar twice about it.  Both times they thought they had fixed the problem.
Sorry I aso updated my profile there - My operating system is OS X version 10.9.2

  • How can I tell if my fan on MacBook Pro is working properly?  It seems to be running often and the laptop feels hot!

How can I tell if my fan on MacBook Pro is working properly?  It seems to be running often and the laptop feels hot!

Isn't it awesome that after you spend 2500$ + on a laptop you need to also become a computer technician in order to keep it working. The fan in my MacBook Pro runs all the time and the computer is also very hot all the time. I always try to make sure it's not sitting on a flat surface that might make it run hotter. I'm running 10.6.8. Is there anything I can do to fix this? When should the fan be running? Should it run when I have more than one program running at a time? Is the MacBook Pro designed to only run one program at time? At the moment I'm watching a show via Firefox. There are no other programs running, the computer is raised off the table, the fan is running at about half the speed it usually does, moments ago the fan was going full bore. Google Browser was open, iTunes was open, text edit was open, but none of them being used - I was using Firefox and watching a movie online with browser window on fullscreen. Anyone got any suggestions? Should I just enroll into a university and begin my studies as computer technician?

  • Why are my fans so loud and my macbook pro so hot?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro.  I've had it since a little bit before Christmas and the fan has always been so loud and the laptop itself, as well as the charger, tend to get VERY hot VERY quickly.  I'm keeping it elevated so it's not being suffocated but it doesn't seem to help.  I've already checked Activity Monitor and nothing is running up my CPU very much and I'm out of options.  Any help is appreciated!! It's driving me crazy!!

Those are very, very high temperatures and very high fan speeds just trying to cool things down.
Now - which applications or processes are turning up the heat? Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and select "All Processes" and sort by CPU %:
Then post your screenshot (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391) using the little camera icon in the composition bar at the top of your reply.

  • The fan on macbook pro is loud

For the last two weeks or so, after I use my MacBook Pro for 1/2 or so, the fan kicks on and it is really loud.  What is causing this?

    Try:
Reboot into Safe Mode then reboot normally. Safe mode takes longer to boot than booting regularly. That is normal.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • FANs:  New MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Fans OSX 10.4.8  Staying On Always

I just received my MBP C2D and as soon as you hit the power button, the fans come on and don't shut off. Its extremly loud. Sounds like a jet engine. I tried everything to stop it. I installed SMC Fan Control, Fan Control, and Core Duo Temp. The fan controls seem not to affect my fan rpm speed. Core duo temp says my core temp fall between 30C and 45C always. Every few hours (like 4-6 hours) the fan will shut off for 1 sec and then start up again and sometimes stutter on and off. Occasionally the fan will shut off for awhile after like 12 hours, until my MBP goes to sleep and then when it wakes, the fan comes on at full speed and remains on forever. I can shutdown the MBP and as soon as I hit the power button the fans come back on. I ran the apple diagnostics rom cd1 and all passed. I did notice after I entered the test that the fan speed went way down until you could barely hear it but I knew it was on. I suspect that my fans are stuck on at wide open rpm. I wonder if software may have a fault that could cause this. My MBP software is all up to date. Any tricks out there to diagnose this problem or fix it? What is the duty cycle of the fans? Should they come on when you first hit the power button before the OS is booted up? Anyone else with C2D fan problems? Please help!

MacBook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Ipod Video 5G

the fan in the c2d model's is designed to be on all the time.
open up smc fan control - if you have no app's open besides smc and your computer is just sitting there idle it is normal for both of the fans to be running at 2000 rpm.
if youre laptop is idle with no apps running and the fans are at 5000rpm+ then i would be conserned, but a simple restart should help in that scenario.
everything you have mentioned is normal.

  • Overheating/overactive fan on macbook pro (only 1 year old)

I recently took my macbook pro to an apple store to adress an overheating/overactive fan issue and they told me nothing was wrong with my computer.  However, I am still experiencing major issues with the fan and overheating.  Every time I use my computer, even if its for a few minutes, it gets very hot and the fan sounds like it's about to explode from working so hard.  Any suggestions for an overheating/overactive fan problem on a macbook pro?  Please help.

  • Overheating and fan on Macbook Pro.

Hi, I bought a new mac book Pro several months ago. It was perfect and still runs perfectly, but recently I noticed that its starts to get very hot and the fan start to kick in, which never happened before. It happens whether I run processor intensive app. like final cut or something minor like Firefox. Fan never kicked in before.
I am wondering what it could be? Left side speaker side of the laptop especially gets hot. The rest of the laptop is warm. Thanks a lot
    MacBook Pro, 2.33ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2GB RAM.

Also the left side of the laptop has more things to heat it up such as the hard drive and power port. My laptop also gets hot on the left as well but i do not really mind as the fan changes speed when the temp changes accordingly. If you want to manually control the fan speed you can use a utility such as SMC Fan Control or Fan Control. I just like to leave the fan settings as is because I don't want to rely on third party software to fix something that was meant to be as is but I have tried Fan Control and after I removed it the fans became back to the default settings.

  • Does fans in macbook pro 13 schoudl still run 2000 rpm?

Hi i have problem with my macbook pro 13' when it gets high temperature around 95 c fans are still runing at 2000 rpm schoudl they do that or rise

You don't want to use a fan control app because they override the sensors in your MBP.
At 90ºC, I would think that the fans should be running at a far greater speed than 2000rpms. Mine can rev up to around 3000-4000rpms when the machine is really being overtaxed.
I would still recommend taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP and having it checked out. If your fans aren't working correctly you could be headed for a thermal shutdown.

  • Noisy fan on MacBook Pro?

I just got a MacBook Pro today, and the fan is very noisy when I'm playing a game.  Do I have a problem?

    Probably not.
Games generally require more CPU/GPU power and they naturally heat up, making higher fan speeds necessary.
So when you're playing games, your processors are going to get hotter and your fans will run dfaster to the point where you can actually 'hear' them. At idle, MBP fan speeds run at right around 200rpms. When stressed they can go as high as (if not above) 6200rpms. And, boy, can you hear them then.

  • Left fan on MacBook Pro 0000 rpm

After using my MB for about one hour, i noticed my SMC fan control status stated my left fan was not running while my right fan was running at 3800 -3900 rpm, and the temp. was at 170 degrees. My first thought was the fan died. I am currently in China where there are only 3 Apple stores in this country and no where near where I am, I don't get back to the U.S for another month and I need to use my MB everyday for work. Can I have some suggestions on what to do how to improve my MB so i don't mess anything up permanently . I also have been using a notebook fan for help.
Macbook Pro 1,1 bought in 2006

Unfortunately, I would have to very strongly urge you to STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY!
You are likely to cause damage to the important & expensive components. Replacing them means replacing the whole logic board. A cost almost the same as purchasing a new MBP.
You are seriously playing with fire if you turn it on.
Replacing the fan yourself is not too difficult, and you could probably pick up a replacement fan off eBay for ~$20.

  • HT4543 Does anyone know a good external CPU fan for macbook pros?

Whenever I attempt to play games on my macbook pro, mid 2012 edition, it heats up to an extreme temperature in the top-left hand corner of my computer. I recognize this isn't safe for the computer. Do you guys know a good mac cpu fan, if that is indeed the heated piece of the computer, that I can plug into my mac via USB port or something of that nature?

It's good that you're looking into something to cool down your MBP. Unfortunately, even good fans will only moderately - maybe 5•F at best.
    Also, download this free software:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/articles/keep-you-and-your-macbook-pro-cool
And use your machine so that the temperature is never above 160•F at any time.

  • Fans on MacBook Pro

I find that my fans are turning on a lot while surfing the web.  I understand that when you use programs that require more "pull", the fans turning on is completely normal.  But I find that even when I surf the web, they turn on a lot.  I'm not playing any games, I'm not watcing any videos.  Just regular, boring surfing the web. I keep my Mac on my desk so there's no reason for it to overheat (like it would if I were to have it on a pillow, etc) and the fans just started turning on about a month ago. Prior to this...nothing.  Is this normal? Anyone know what causes the temp to suddenly spike thus enabling the fans to turn on?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you shpild not remove yourself
