Loud hum when Imac sleeps

i've been using my imac g5 for a few months with no issues what-so-ever. just recently i've run into one major issue. when the computer puts itself to sleep...i get a loud humming noise that will not stop (i think its the fan running. the power button is disabled and i have to unplug the computer and plug it back in to restart it. any idea what the problem is? i think i may have changed the power saver settings just before this issue surfaced, but i'm not sure what would cause this to happen.

What it's doing is going into sleep mode and this is normal. You should be able to wake it up just moving the mouse or pressing any keys on the keyboard. What I want to find out is whether it's hanging up when it goes to sleep or if it will wake up normally as it should regardless of the humming sound. To check the Energy Saver settings go into System Preferences/Energy Saver.

  • Time Machine backup disappears when iMac sleeps

Tried finding this topic but could not find the specifics. I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.7 and I use a Mercury enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA for Time Machine backup, connected with FireWire. Every time my Mac goes to sleep overnight, the next morning, the Time Machine icon disappears from the desktop. It's been disconnected, because when I run Check Time Machine, the log reads thusly:
<<Thu Apr 21 10:29:30 com.apple.backupd-auto Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
Thu Apr 21 12:30:05 [0x0-0x2d22d2].backupd-helper Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume
    >>
Occasionally I'll get the error message on the Mac that a device has been "improperly disconnected" but most of the time when it sleeps the TM drive icon just goes away (even tho the backup drive is still on).
Any ideas? Can I fix this or have to live with it? Are there alternatives to TM that may work better?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.
    Best,
    Mike

I had the same problem as Bru-Hed, but with a Samsung G3 Station 1 TB with USB-connection. After waking up the MAC the message "improperly disconnected" appeared. Was happy with the solution you gave and changed the power save settings accordingly, the drive holds its power, but....... things did not change. Switching off the MAC and restarting gives no problems with the back-up drive, but after waking up I have to reinstall the back-up drive every time by disconnecting and connecting the USB-connector. After choosing the drive again in Time Machine, everything works properly until the next time the MAC goes asleep......
Any other solution to this problem ?

  • Loud hum when plug in stereo jack to pa

    HP Pavilion dv9740us Notebook PC
When i try to plug a stereo jack into the headphone jack to conect it to my PA System I get a loud hum?
when I attempt this with any other computer i have no problem just with my HP i get this loud hum. I can plug it into a Logitech PC audio system i have or my line 6 amp cd/mp3 port.
I am using a mini stereo jack to to rca jacks and plugging into my Carvin pa tape return jacks. This works with every other computer I have but not with my HP?

Have you tried to connect it to anything else using the same cable?
I assume that you have the right input selected on the stereo, but I can only think of 3 reasons for this:
    1) Wrong input on the stereo, or some setting on the stereo prevents output.
    2) The iPhone does somehow not work with this cable.
    3) The cable is broken.
Try to eliminate these one by one, e.g. by connecting the iPhone to some other
    stereo, etc.

  • Losing connection to 2nd monitor when iMac sleeps

I have a 2nd monitor connected to my 21" iMac (late 2013) with Mavericks via displayport/thunderbolt port to HDMI. I had the same one with the same link connected to my old 2010 Macbook Pro, and I never saw this.
What happens is when the computer goes to sleep, all of the windows on the second screen move to the iMac, and my Wacom tablet even goes from being mapped to ONLY my second monitor to being only mapped to the iMac!
This is kind of driving me crazy, and I have searched and Googled and just can't find a solution.
Any ideas would be rad. Thanks.

  • Wireless Quits When iMac Sleeps

Can someone help me out with the following annoyance?
Every single time that my iMac wakes from the sleep mode, I lose my internet connection.
I'm automatically presented with the Network Diagnostics window when this happens and as soon as I select my Network name from the list, the connection is immediately restored.
But why is the connection lost every time the iMac shuts down?
         Cheers
         John

I think that I may have found the answer, at least in my situation. If I understand correctly, every time the Mac goes to sleep, it turns off the WiFi card. The key to ensuring that the connection is renewed again when the Mac powers on again, is to make sure that the - Ask To Join New Networks - box is checked
in my case, just as the Screen Shot shows, it wasn't. I have of course checked it now and hopefully that will be the end of my problems with the WiFi constantly conking out.
    Cheers

  • When iMac Sleeps, AirPort Disconnects: Why?

I took delivery of my iMac yesterday (my first Mac), and my problem is this:
After awakening the iMac from sleep, the wireless Internet connection is lost and I have to go through the few clicks to select the wireless network, etc. It's then reconnected fine.
Shouldn't the wireless Internet connection be maintained through sleeping?

Make sure that there is only one choice for your Mac. Old networks that you setup and old preferred network passwords can confuse your Mac, especially if you migrated old user accounts when you originally setup this Mac.
The old networks can be found in System Preferences>Network>Air Port. Press the Advanced button. In the AirPort pane you will have to highlight each network listed and remove it by clicking the "-" button below.
Old preferred network passwords are in your Keychain. Go to Apps/Utilities/Keychain Access. If you sort the passwords by kind they should be labeled such as Airport Network Password.
When you designate a wireless network as preferred, the password is saved to the keychain. So if you make sure that your iMac only has only one preferred network from which to select, upon startup or waking, it should ignore all the other wifi networks drifting around your location and make a beeline to its one preferred choice.
I hope something here applies and is helpful.

  • After Mavericks Update Arris Modem now going to standby mode when iMac sleeps

After installing Mavericks on iMac, whenever the iMac (connected wirelessly to the network with Airport Extreme 5th Gen) goes to sleep it is causing our modem to enter standby mode which limits internet access to all devices on the wireless network even when they are actively requesting data from the internet. As soon as the iMac is woken up the modem comes back out of sleep/standby mode and everything works fine. The modem is connected directly to the Airport Extreme WAN port and all devices just use wireless internet. The only resolution I've found is stopping the iMac from entering sleep mode in Energy Settings but this is not a long term solution. Anyone else having this issue?
The modem we have is an Arris TM722G.
    Thanks in advance.
I've also tried resetting PRAM, creating a new network location, releasing and renewing IP.

If you can get the computer to start in Recovery, then access OS X Utilities,
an attempt could be made to Repair Disk using the Disk Utility there...
Several instances of an upgrade leading to issues in Mac OS X was due
to some previous condition in the computer, or problem in the hard drive,
or maybe insufficient or low-quality RAM installed; among others, before
the last OS X upgrade was installed. And then the extra effort of processing
a new OS on top of other bits, can cause the computer to act up or fail.
What was the previous OS X version? How old is the iMac...?
Did you upgrade from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2?

There may be a hardware problem behind the issues your computer
presents, and a diagnostic inspection &/or testing may need to be
done at a Genius bar, at an Apple Store; this is cited as a free service
at US and Canada Apple Stores. If you do not have one, you could
enlist the aid of an independent authorized Apple service company

  • Firewire drive does not sleep when iMac sleeps

My G-Tech G-Drive Mini connected via Firewire to an new iMac will not spin down when the iMac goes to sleep. It does spin down with the iMac active, but will spin up when the iMac goes to sleep. On a MacBookPro with Tiger, the drive will spin down when the Mac sleeps, which I would expect to be the "normal" behavior for an external drive. Is this a Drive issue or an iMac Firewire bus issue?

    By the way Bosanac...
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It seems as though I had a similar issue with my ministack external drive and I stopped using it and I have used several different external drives with all my Mac including my iMac. It's definitely hard to say as I would lean more towards the G-drive. I would contact G-Technology and see if they have nay suggestions.
Keep in mind that there have been many issue with OSX SL and that too maybe an issue.

  • Ethernet disconnects when imac sleeps

When i put my imac to sleep, it seems to disconnect from the ethernet that is plugged into the back.
When i wake it up and log it back in, any applications that was signed in, like lync messenger are logged out and it takes a good 10 seconds to be able to browse the internet.
I'd love to just put my display to sleep and not the computer itself, however I work in an office and need to be able to lock my machine when i walk away.
I use CMD ALT EJECT to put my imac to sleep. And i am using the latest OS.

  • Iphone disabling router when imac sleeps...

I have my iMac behind an SMC Barricade SMC7008ABR router. I recently upgraded the router firmware which I suspect is the reason why I've started seeing this problem on a network that's been stable for years.
When I put my iMac into either software or hardware sleep, and only if I have my iPhone connected to the usb-docking cradle, within 1-3 seconds, the router suddenly resets itself and then proceeds to berserk itself. All the nodes on the network come down, and the light show begins on the front panel.
Power-cycling the router does not work. Nor will the router reset itself until such time that I remove the iMac from it's slumber.
Unplugging the iPhone (gen 1) from the cradle and sleeping the box does not affect network operations.
I can duplicate this every time.
The router is my DHCP server as well. I can provide more data if requested. Have searched the forums and google'd the problem but couldn't locate any helpful information.
    TIA

progress: I unchecked the power-options box: wake for ethernet admin access, and that seems to have solved the issue.

  • When iMac sleeps... it shuts down external hard drives

When I wake my iMac I get the error message that my hard drives were removed, could cause damage, etc. This just started today. It's almost like the iMac kind of goes into a deeeeeeeep sleep... but the computer doesnt shut down totally. I can still wake it, takes a little longer than usual though.
Anyone know what the issue can be?
    Thanks

Do you have an external drive attached?
The reason for asking is I have seen similar errors when I fail
to properly unmount or removes an external drive.
There may be a better way but when I want to turn off my
external drive (used for TM and SD), I right click on he
external HD's icon and select the EJECT option. This unmount
the drive so the power can be turned OFF and removed
from the back of the iMac. You can also do with the Disk
    Utility.
Try unmounting your external drives and restart to see
    if this helps.

  • Why do I get a loud hum when adjusting the screen brightness?

I am getting an annoying Hum and the loudness depends on the how bright I have the screen, as I turn it down the hum becomes quieter.  This is super distracting as I like to run my sound through external speakers, but the hum is just enhanced.  I brough my unit it for service, they sent it out and said nothing was wrong with it.... Any ideas?  None of my other computers make this hum!

Sounds like the inverter, which powers the screen is going bad. I'd bring it back.

  • Mail logs out of server when imac sleeps

Mail logs out of the server when computer sleeps

system preferences, security and privacy, general menu, unlock the lock and click on advanced.
Set the automatic logout to 999.  That's 999 minutes to automatic logout.
Only do this if you really don't want auto logout.  Like when you're doing a crypto-quality erasure of a backup hard drive or backing up to a blank hard drive (can take several hours for first backup).

  • Imacs go offline when they sleep

    Hi,
I have 11 intel imacs and use ARD to admin them but when they sleep they seem to sever the network connection resulting in a communication error when I try to remotely wake them. Also I wanted to look into the use of them as Logic Pro nodes for our main studio G5 but as they sleep the nodes get disconnected.
Anyone know how to disable the network sleep?

As mentioned, your network connection will be dropped when your Macs sleep. There are utilities out there like Wake550 that will allow you to wake your Macs over the network. I have never used it, but have heard good things about it.

  • Thunderbolt drive not going to sleep when iMac does

Not sure if my title makes sense...
Ok, I have an Intel iMac running the latest version of the O/S
Attached via firewall I have a Lacie external 2big drive
Attached via thunderbolt I have a lacie 2big thunderbolt drive
When the iMac goes to sleep by itself, i.e. I walk away and let the system decide when to sleep, only the firewall connected drive shuts down.
The thunderbolt drive remains live with that nice big blue lamp on the front of the drive remaining lit.
If I manually put the imac to sleep, then both drives shut down. I'd really like both drives to shutdown properly when the system decides I've gone to bed....or gone out or whatever.
    Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem with three lacie_2big drives.  Thay do not go to sleep when my iMac is sleeping.  I never had this problem untell using OS X Mavericks.  Please help!
