Loud (I mean LOUD) Beep

My MBP has done some strange things from time to time with the speakers... The odd loud pop... some crackling... I just chalked it up to persnickity Mac... However, I was just playing a little CIV IV, when I got the scare of my life.
A LOUD (and I can not emphasize the LOUD part enough) beep (sounded like system beep) ERUPTED from my speakers, in fact it was so lound I have a little ringing in my ears.
The beep was only a second... Then there was the aformetnioned pop crackle, then everthing was back to normal.
What was that?
Is it a heating issue? (I asked this based on the fact these werid things only seem to happen when Im running somthing that makes the system 'cook')
Seriouly... Im worried that somthing is messed up with my MBP...
My current up time is about 2 days... CPU temp currently (a minute after this happend is 64) CPU is 74% idle RAM 15mb free, HD 10 gig free currently on a wired network - 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo w/ 1GB 667 MHz DDR@ SDRAM.
Help.
Thanks

I have had something similar although I wouldn't call it a beep. Probably about three times in the past many months a loud crackling, buzzing, and cranking sound has been emitted from my laptop's loudspeakers. It's probably equal to or less than one second in duration. Very quick and extremely loud. I was not doing anything in particular to evoke this. And, there seem to be no pattern to what I do that would cause this. This has happened only about three times.

    sounds are air being moved
if exposed to a high enough sound being moved presured impuls then
    any device could take damage
but your speaker which are maded to move sound and be moved by sound
would last longer then mostly anything else if your phone in terms of being damaged by sound
    so the answer is yes
but not likely before anything else in your phone being destroied by the same loud music plus

  • Fairly loud constant metronome like beeping sound

Today, I picked up my computer and it started to make a strange sound. It is a metronome like beeping sound. It beeps quickly and is fairly loud even when I mute the computer. I would say it sounds like someone tapping on a chalkboard with their finger. When I push down where it seems to be coming from I can get it to stop, otherwise it just starts again. The computer seems to be running fine, except for the loud nice. The sound is nearly consistant from the moment I start up the copmuter, although sometimes it seems to stop for a minute or two, but eventually starts up again.
    I have a G60 445DX HP Laptop, it is 3 years old.
If you need any additional information, please don't hesitate to ask.
    Thanks.

That usually means a keyboard problem; the 'drumroll' being the key repeat signal.
Not sure about the quivering menus, though, and I wouldn't have thought opening an app would stop it.
Is the keyboard wired or bluetooth?
If wired, try unplugging it and reconnecting.
Bluetooth could possibly need re-pairing, but I don't use one so I'll let someone else have a go at that.
Certainly it's not normal and I'd want to get to the bottom of it.

  • What it means loud fan noise?

    Hi there,
I have a Imac G5 Rev2 and I read a lot of topics about loud fan noise. I bought an Imac about 4 months ago and the fan noise is a bit louder than when I just got it. What do all the users mean by "loud"? It is only once, when I was running the hardware test, that I heard my Imac did the "airplane" (very loud) fan noise. When I am using applications using a lot of CPU, I hear a louder fan noise but not the "airplane" noise.
Then what is the most reliable program to check the temperature of the iMac G5?
Which range of temperature is normal for the iMac?
Thx in advance for ya replies....

I have a Rev b just like you and light use the temp of the cpu is 65-68º C while the hard drive is about 53º C. This is the temp as I am using two browsers, with iTunes and MS word open and running.
For a temp program you can try Temperature Monitor at this link:
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
You can also try the very handy iStat Pro Widget (Of which the temps I gave you above came from). It has a lot of very useful data, from CPU to Memory usage, from CPU to Hard Drive temps---and even the speed of all three fans. You can find that here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac just mad a loud crackle, very loud snap and then out

I think I'm screwed. My iMac just mad a crackle sound followed by a loud snap and then it went black out our. My spike bar is still running and so are the other computers, etc. that are plugged into it.
I have an external Hard drive attached and it shut down too.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Hey Big,
I know what you said about investing in a 9 year old g3 but this is more of a hobby for me right now. I plan on maybe giving it to my son so he can browse the internet with it.
I've got my two kids on a 400 and a 600 iMac respectively. They're 8 and 9 and spend a lot of time on the Internet.
That being said i hooked up my ethernet cord to it and for the life of me i can not figure out how to get online in os9.
And you also said something about updating the firmware, how do i check the firm ware and if i do need to update it?
Look under the Apple > system profiler > production information. It should reat 4.1.9 f1 if it reads something like 3.0 something it needs to be up dated.
Do i need a internet conection to update the firmware?
It would help it's not necessary but can be a pain without it. I have a burned CD with the updater on it since I work with so many iMacs.

and some had osx already installed. Is that a good idea and if yes how do i know if my machine will run the version i get?
You wouldn't. These iMacs will run on 10.4.11 with enough RAM installed. At least 512.
I'd look for a Panther installer or a Tiger but they will have to be on CD since that's what your iMac came with.

  • ATI x800XT -- how loud is too loud?

    I recently upgraded my G5 from a fanless ATI 9600XT to a ATI x800XT.
I was wondering how loud this new card should be?
Upon powering up the G5, I can hear the fans spin up quite loudly compared to before the upgrade. I'm assuming this is the new vid card? I thought for a minute that I installed something incorrectly as it almost sounded like something was vibrating for a few seconds but then the noise smoothed out.
After 10 seconds or so, the fan noise reduces but still can be heard during simple tasks like web surfing. It adds a bit to the overall G5 fan noise that I'm used to but isn't too bad.
So far, I haven't tried any graphics-intensive workout for the new card. How loud will the fan get then? As loud as the full blast fans that I used to get with kernel panics or what?
    Thanks for your insight.

    Thanks, Samsara.
As you said, I'm probably just not used to one with a fan and wasn't sure what to expect. It is well seated, and so far, the only time I've really heard it is during startup (where I think it comes on full power for a few seconds).
During "regular" use, I can hear it but, overall, it only adds a little to the general fan noise. It doesn't ramp up and down during regular use.
I haven't taxed it yet, but as this card was near-impossible to get, I'll definitely be keeping it.
    Thanks for your reassurance, Samsara.

Can somebody give a guide to mobo beeps?
My motherboard makes such sequence:  1 long and short beep then series of 8 short beeps.  I may be wrong with that 1long and short at the beginning because of my shitty speaker but  those 8 beeps are clearly heard.

  • How do you disable the LOUD low battery beep on Envy M6 laptops?

I bought TWO HP Envy M6-1105dx laptops for Black Friday (Too late to return them now). I have spent days and hours speaking with HP tech support, case managers, supervisors, corporate office and senior case managers and it all seems to be the same. "Theres nothing we can do for you, theres nothing wrong." Well, HP is wrong. There is a problem when I listen to your tech suport to change settings, update BIOS and spend hours out of my day to "attempt" to  fix one of your design flaws. Want to know why this beep is a problem? Im a law student. We use our laptops all day for typing notes in class, homework assignments, 4 hour in-class exams (all on the computer) and for work in the library. It is absurd to think that you would sell me $1400.00 worth of computers and expect me to "deal" with a problem that literally scares professors, classmates and others in this type of quiet setting when a loud smoke-detector sounding beep rings through the room. How embarrasing! You just better hope that one day someone, child or adult, is not seriously injured by the reaction to this "smoke detector" alarmingly loud sounding beep. {Content Removed}If anyone else can come up with another solution to fix please help, since everything posted so far has not worked. Thank you!

  • MacBook won't boot up -- Loud Beep Noise

I just started encountering this problem today. My MacBook worked just fine yesterday, and then when I went to turn it on today, it refuses to boot up. I get the startup sound, and then after that just a loud noise that goes "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP......BEEP, BEEP, BEEP..." on and on. Does anyone know what could be causing this, and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I thought I would give an update to my situation now that it's been resolved. Initially, the computer would get stuck on the gray screen and give the three beeps randomly. Sometimes it would boot up like normal, and other times it wouldn't. It seemed like more often than not, it would boot up fine when it was plugged into the wall instead of just running on battery power. This problem cropped up out of nowhere, because the computer had not been dropped or banged or jolted at all.
I took it to my local Apple store, where it failed to demonstrate my error for the Genius (of course lol). He did confirm that the symptoms I was describing indicated problems with the RAM or RAM slots, but since the error wasn't occuring, he really couldn't help me. He did re-seat the RAM cards for me just to be sure, and sent me on my way telling me to download all the latest software updates, and to bring it back if the error occurred again.
As soon as I get home, the error happens! I made an appointment to go back to the Apple store the next day, where it did actually demonstrate the error for the Genius. She said that I would need to check it in to be repaired and she disappeared to the back to quote me a repair time. When she came back, she instead offered to exchange the computer for me, and since I had no important data on the computer, and I backed up what I did have, I accepted. Everything has been working fine ever since.

  • Loud, long beep coming from MacBook

It's never happened before, but it's happened twice in the last half hour. A loud, obnoxious, and uninterrupted beep comes from my MacBook, and when I hit mute, it goes away. It sounds a lot like the noise that comes from the TV during a test of the emergency broadcast system.

Well I just did a "restore" that took an hour and twenty minutes and the message I got was....
"There is a problem with your iPhone."
"We're sorry, the iPhone you connected may be damaged and cannot be activated for service. We recommend you visit your nearest Apple Store for more information."
Guess I'm in the car, driving an hour to the apple store. ugh! I am so over this iPhone!!

  • IMac g3 starts to boot OS9 but then a loud beep and an icon flashes

I found an old imac G3 that somebody put out in the trash. Plugged it in and the screen comes on with the OS9 logo and it says starting up. But then a loud tone starts to beep from the speakers and an icon starts to flash at the bottom right of the screen. The icon looks like ether a CD or maybe a hard drive and it says "looking" underneath the icon.
It is the iMac G3 Blueberry with 350mhz, 512k L2 cache, 64 mb sdram, 6g HD, 24x cd drive.

  • Macbook pro not turning on after SMC reset. I have the following problem. Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011does not sleep when closing the screen. smc due loud fan and an X on battery symbol

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • Perceived loudness - Match Volume

    Hey,
I'm trying to match the volume of a large amount of small mono wav files.
I would like to use the perceived loudness setting but the Match Volume function dosen't seem to work properly with it. E.g. when there are files in my pool that vary from -25 dB to -11 dB and I use the match volume setting to match the perceived loudness to -17 dB the output volumes vary from -21 to -12 but don't seem to have the exact volume of -17 dB (which is the case when matching the RMS).
And a question what does perceived loudness really mean? I know that it is more sensitive to the mid-range, but is there any graph that shows how it exactly works?

    Muks85 wrote:
Relly You can match the volume of 6000 files by ear better than an automated process? I'd like to see that:)
Yes I can match files better by ear. No, I wouldn't do 6000 of them like that, obviously.
In my opinion a 'Match volume' level should first measure what energy a signal has e.g. RMS than calculate how many dB should it add or remove to match the desired level. Simple as that. The more complicated the measurement is the more complex is the whole match function.
So when I use percieved loudness to match the volume of 6000 files, Audition should first estimate the loudness of all the files and that apply gain to them to match my desired percieved loudness level. That's how it works with e.g. ITU norm.
Well that is pretty much what I said - except that it's not a simple measurement at all, otherwise it would have been commonplace a long time ago. For a start, as well as dynamics changes, perceived loudness is very much frequency-dependent, so weighting algorithms have to be used. But like you said, 'estimate' is about it.
Oh, and some of the regularly broadcast antics of one of the largest broadcasters in the world (the BBC) prove conclusively that the EBU/ITU way of doing this simply doesn't work, FWIW. One of the single biggest culprits is speech vs. music or general output on TV. If it did work, I wouldn't have to turn up the sound on nearly every speech programme they broadcast, but I do - and I'm not alone. Like I said, I can guess it better than any automated system.

  • Why is the fan on my MacBook Pro so loud?

For the past week, my macbook has been really loud. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed it would start getting loud when I ran high-energy programs, or when I was downloading large files or streaming movies. It would start getting loud, would stay loud for a little while, and would then die down. This week, specifically today and yesterday, my laptop has been loud constantly, even when I'm only running 2 tabs on google chrome. My laptop doesn't feel like its getting too hot or over heating. How can I fix this?
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          3 MB

      Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B27
      SMC Version (system):          1.68f99
    Any help is appreciated.

    Try:
Reboot into Safe Mode then reboot normally. Safe mode takes longer to boot than booting regularly. That is normal.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Ipod playing too loud?

Hi there, JOSH!!! Oooooooohhhhhhhhh! Anyway, I've been having some problems with my ipod nano (4th gen) recently and I'm wondering if ya'll could help me out, if you'd kindly :3
Firstly the ipod is playing too loud, way too loud. Now this is not just your typical loudness, this is.... Advananced loudness.... To the point that the song becomes barely listenable.. Ok, to give you an example, let's say I'm listening to "POWER" by Kanye West. When the drums and the 'beat' come in at about 0:25 it just sounds like grabbled static, really loud, grabbled static. :/
And I've no idea what's going on.. At first I thought that the bass and treble in the equalizer was too high, but it turned out the equalizer wasn't even on :S Then I tried restoring it to factory settings (Several times), but that didn't work either. And 'then' I thought it might just be the headphones, but that was a dead end too! :O Now I'm left wondering, just what the **** is going on :/ Anyone have any ideas on this? (P.S Volume limit was never used)
Secondly it runs out of battery, like that *Clicks fingers* I think after 45 minutes it's already out of juice. :/ Though I believe that this might be due to the 'loud' problem, it could be something else ...
Thirdly it keeps 'crashing' and it's not just a 'hold down ya menu and play button and it'sa better' crash. It's a 'Restore to factory and resync your whole ****ing libeary everytime' crash :/
It's only recently started doing this. About the time itunes was last updated.. I synced up and poof ipod starts acting funny :S
So can anybody find me!!! Somebody tohelpmefixmyipod?
As a note my Nano magically recovered from being dropped in water about a year. However it's been working just fine and dandy for about 5-6 months now.

Try verifying that you do not have optional volume adjustment cranked up.
While in iTunes, get info on a track that is having this issue.  Go to the options tab and at the top there is a "Volume Adjustment" setting. It should be set to "None". If it is set to +100%, that is your problem.
To fix, all of them at once, you can select all in your music library, then right click and select "Get Info" it will ask if you want to change multiple files at once, say yes. Then go to the options tab and set it to None and it will put that on all your tracks.
click ok, resync your music and see if that does it.
