Loud noise when burning CD and will not burn DVD

I bought an iMac a week ago and have been trying to burn DVDs - from finder, toast, popcorn and i have tried different brand DVDs and +R & -R all to no avail. i get a error message everytime.
I can burn CDs, but it makes a really loud whirring sound (i mean unhealthy loud) throughout the whole burn process and then for a few minutes afterwards.
Has anyone else experienced these problems? It doesn't sound normal.

It's probably a media problem. I had a 100 pack of Verbatim CD's that vibrated and made a loud noise in mine. Like it was out of balance. They worked fine in other burners.
If another brand does the same thing, then I'd be concerned.

    Hi
To give you some precise answer it will be interesting to know which DVDs are not readable. Meaning of word 'some media' is to general and not helpful to understand the problem.
Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model and it is possible that ODD functionality is not good anymore. You can try to clean the lens.

I am trying to burn music to a CD-R-  message says:  unable to locate the original file.   Music is on the iTunes program but will not play or burn.  Is there something I should change to be able to burn to CD?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

  • CD Burning locks up itunes and will not burn anything

Help! I have tried to burn single songs and playlists. Each time it locks my itunes up. It says that it is writing the songs but it never actually writes anything. When it times out it will unlock and make the sync noise but nothing is on the disk. I can burn songs from my Windows media list but not any from itunes. What can I do?

Hopefully you were foresighted enough to keep all your music in MP3 format. Then you can burn it in either iTunes or Windows Media Player, whichever is available at the moment.

  • HP Pavilion Laptop has burning smell and will not turn on or charge

Last night I plugged in my laptop to charge and the little white charging light came on (everything was normal). I left my laptop at an angle leaned against the wall so it wouldn't get stepped on. In the morning when I tried to turn on my computer nothing happened -- none of the lights came on at all. Even the charging light was out even though the computer was still plugged in. When I unplugged the charger and looked closer both the computer's charging port and the end of the charger smelled like burning plastic. Now when I plug/unplug the charger there is an electrical sounding pop/crackle sound at the charging port. I'm going back to school in a few days so I would really appreciate it if someone could reply soon so I can fix it before classes start. Thank you!

  • IPod will not sync, and will not burn cds...

1.) When I connect my iPod to the comp the syncing process starts. The little wheel my my ipod's name starts spinning, then slows down, then freezes and itunes stops responding. I have to hit crtaltdel to manually shut down itunes. Then, I have to click on the little icon in the lower right hand corner that says "Safely Remove Hardware" to disconnect my ipod w/o messing it up. Fortunately, my ipod is okay, but I have not been able to update it since the beginning of May.
I have recently downloaded the latest 2 versions of itunes and the latest Gear program.
After I had problems, someone suggested downgrading to a lower version of iTnes. When I tried to downgrade to a lower version my comp would not let me do it. Also, I have recently installed to a new program, Alcohol 120%, and that burns dvds fine. I did install it after I had been having problems w/ itunes and my ipod.
2.)I can play all my music on my iTunes on my comp, but when I go to burn a cd, I get this message "Disc Burner or Software Not Found."
I have read other threads, and this is the info I can provide so far (please bear in my I am not that comp savvy).

hmmmm. you've got rather a lot of burning software entries in there. (it looks like you've got some kind of Roxio product installed, as well as itunes and Alcohol 120%.)
by way of experiment, try the technique described in the following document (remember to take a backup of your device filter registry keys first).

do you still get the itunes message with just the iTunes filters in place?

  • IDVD is jerky and will not burn

    20 in. 2007 iMac 2.4
    1.5 gig RAM
    190 gig free on HD
    10.5.5
    iDVD '08
Right, now that's out the way, into my problem. Ever since downloading 10.5.5 iDVD has been very jerky when compiling the DVD (almost impossible to do). It is like I am trying to multitask with far too many programs running. Then, to make matters worse, it gets half way through a burn and then stops with an error. It does this whether I burn to disk or image.
    I have: Fixed permissions.
Repaired the Drive (there was a problem but it now tells me it's fine. Both Disk Utility and Onyx).
Un-installed and reinstalled iDVD twice (removing anything vaguely associated with it) and
    Done the appropriate software updates.
Re-installed the Combo Version of 10.5.5.
Run every Onyx maintenance script possible.
    Cleaned every cache available.
I haven't: Erased my hard drive and started from scratch (trying desperately not to do this).
    Killed anyone... yet.
I'm not really sure what else to try. Except maybe downgrade to 10.5.4 again (not sure how to do this though). Hopefully some of you may have some suggestions
    Cheers
    Mike

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

And so many strange fileformats of video and audio. I only use:

    • .aiff audio format: Never .mp3, .avi, .wmv or direct from iTunes (always convert to .aiff)

  • HT1212 How do you unlock iPhone when its disabled and will not connect o iTunes

My iphone is locked.  Says iPhone is disabled, connect to iTunes.  But when i connect ot iTunes it does not connect.  Tells me to put in my password inwhich I cant because it is disabled.  This is an iPhone 4 that is not used as a phone but an iTouch for my daughter. No phone capapbilities.

power your phone completely down, plug the cord into the computer but not the iphone.  Once the phone is completely powered down hold down the home button while you plug in the phone and continue to hold it down until you see the iTunes icon.  that is recovery mode.  Restore to manufacture settings.  Unless you have a back up all your info will be lost

  • Loud noise, when idle, running and reading! WHAT GIVES!

So I bought myself a lovely mac, and I love it! But I have some problems with it. THE NOISE! I don't really understand the problem, the computer works fine, but is pretty loud. The foot is vibrating aswell...
Ado you have the same problem?

Your comment is so vague it's impossible to really troubleshoot. Contact AppleCare immediately (the number is in your owners manual) and they will help you get it fixed. If the machine is less than 10 days old and you bought it directly from Apple I'd recommend a replacement machine.

The most frequent problem in an optical drive is a dirty lens.  Use a lens cleaning DVD, a few shots of compressed air in the slot or a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglass lens cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently inserted inside the slot.  If no success, the Apple store genius bar is the next stop.
