Loud superdrive

Hello,
I just bought a new Macbook (2.2 ghz processor, 2gb ram, 120 gb hardrive, superdrive and runs Leopard) yesterday.
I have noticed when watching a DVD, or listening to a CD, or basically inserting any cd (file storage, audio, program install) the drive is VERY loud....if you are mute the volume, you can hear it like crazy (what I think is the CD spinning?). Anyhow, point is the drive is loud and I have an old Ibook and a Hewlitt Packard PC and the drives are quite as a mouse when listening to CDs or whatever.
It's quite annoying. Normal? Problem?

Not sure whether Apple would consider this a 'bad' drive since it appears to be a somewhat common problem with these new pioneers. I'm having the same issue though and hopeful for some kind of resolution.

  • Loud Superdrive, CD Recordings Fuzzy

My SuperDrive is at TIMES, very loud when I put in a CD or DVD; and, at other times is quiet. There have been no problems READING disks, but when burning CDs (audio from itunes), some of the songs are fuzzy and skip. One DVD recording errored as well, though I have since burned some DVD's just fine. Burning CDs on my external drive works fine, so it isn't the source. Has anyone else had this problem? All of my software/firmware are up to date. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi justaglo and welcome to the discussions.
Noisy optical drive operation is often due to poorly made CD's and DVD's . Discs which are the slightest bit out of round or out of balance are likely to produce a lot of noise.
The same discs are also likely to suffer from erratic burn and playback behaviour.
The slot loading Panasonic drives in many Macs are less tolerant of such things than many of the external, tray loading, drives.
My suggestion would be that you try a few different brands of discs and see which ones it likes best. Verbatim, TDK and Sony seem to work very reliably in mine. Memorex, and many of the cheap, generic, discs are much less happy. Some are so bad that they are only really of any use as drink coasters.
Assuming that Northwest WA is NW "Western Australia" one brand of "cheap" discs which does work well though, in my experience, are those sold through Australian Post Offices, under their own brand. Worth a go if you haven't already tried them!
Another factor worth considering in your neck of the woods unfortunately may be damage to discs through heat or vibration during transit, regardless of their original quality.
    Cheers

  • My superdrive makes a loud noise when i start up my new macbook pro 15" that i just got about a month ago, is there any way how to fix it or should i take it in to an apple store

Just got a brand new macbook pro, and eve since I first started it up it has made this weird noise right before the start up audio. i have done some research and i have found out that there are two superdrives that apple puts into their macbooks and that one is louder then the other, but this was back in 2009. should apple have fixed that through out all these years. what should i do?

Yes, it makes this noise, but only on startup.  It is normal to hear this noise during startup.  My mac is an early 2011 model.

  • Superdrive Very loud and trouble burning

When I'm burning a DVD in my superdrive over 2.4x it gets very loud (almost like airplane propellers) and eventually the disc pops out and complains it didn't burn. This happens with any optical media burned at over the lowest burn speed. Is this normal? I doubt it is, so should I take her into the genius bar?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
It is recommended that you repair permissions & restart your computer after each burning session.
If none of the above works, then hopefully you have AppleCare. Take your computer in to your local AASP & let AC deal w/it.

  • SuperDrive vibrating and making very loud noise

Whenever I finish ripping a CD, the SuperDrive starts vibrating (excessively?) and making a loud noise for about 10-15 seconds... I was thinking that was normal, but recently the noise has kept getting louder and this last time the whole MBP was vibrating so much I ejected it before the noise stopped...
Would this call for a visit to the Genius Bar?

Yes, a few months ago I noticed it making a lot of noise for 10-15 seconds after CDs finished ripping to iTunes, though I can't say for sure it wasn't doing that before. Within the last few days it's gotten so bad that the whole desk that the MBP is sitting is vibrating heavily... not normal, I assume. :/
This would be under warranty, right? (13" refurb MBP bought in Jan 2010)

  • How avoid the loud sound of superdrive at start up ? (macbook alu late 2008)

    Hi!
The question is... in the title !
How avoid the loud sound of superdrive at start up ?
It's quite boring, and I have never tried to avoid it, so if someone may help me...
    I have a macbook alu (late 2008) :
    MacBook5,1
    MB51.007D.B03
    1.32f8

It's the sound made by the superdrive at start up.
You can hear it here :

  • My iMac superdrive is *really* loud -- is this normal?

Most of the time when I put a disc in my superdrive (20" Intel iMac), the drive revs up and there's a very loud groaning/grinding noise. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but most of the time it does.
Is this normal sounds for this drive? Everything about the iMac is so quiet and nice, I find it hard to believe thats normal.
Other than the noise, the drive seems to work fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Stephen

    Hello,
The problem with discussions, is that it's hard to convey sounds. What I may interpret your description as could be totally different than what you mean.
But, I'll tell you that the CD-ROM / SuperDrive in all of my recent Macs have been very noisy.
I've had two iMac G5's with SuperDrives, a Mac Mini and iBook with Combo Drives, and I've also got an iMac G3 with CD-ROM, and have had several other Macs over the years.
On all of these systems, there is a very, very loud sound when the disks are spinning. But, you can tell that this is a spinning motion you are hearing. It's very loud, and very obnoxious. But, it's present on all my systems.
Now, my external Sony DVD-R drive on my Mac Mini and the DVD-R drive in my PC are extremely quiet even when in active use. You can barely hear them.
So, from my experience, the drives Apple uses (or at least the way they use them) are much louder than the other drives I've used.
But, it's hard telling from your description what you are hearing.
There is usually a sound that the drives will make when they are reading the disks and trying to locate information. To me, it sounds kind of like "Chee Chee..., Chee Chee..., Chee Chee".
But, from your description, I can't really tell what you are hearing.
But, if you are at all unsure, I would take it into your local service center and have them listen to it while you are there. That way you can point-out the noise you are hearing, and have them tell you if it's normal.
    I hope this helps.

  • Loud CD/DVD Superdrive

Just switched from being a long time Windows user to being a Mac user (and can say that I like what I see so far). However, one of the more annoying issues that I have is that my Macbook Pro seems to be really loud whenever checking the CD/DVD drive while returning from sleep or starting up (whether I have a disk in there or not). One option around this that I found is to create a separate folder and move the extensions IOCDStorageFamily & IODVDStorageFamily to it. I wanted to know if there is another way to disable the Superdrive check?
    Thanks in advance.
    LM

    Hi there,
have you find anyway to solve this problem?
it sound very annoying that it always do a disc check whenever waking up form sleep, open the cds & dvds in the system preference & opening disk utility.
strangely, I'm not sure is it suppose to be like this
but my new 13'' mbp doesn't do disk check at all from wake up.
can you please explain more about moving the IOCDStorageFamily & IODVDStorageFamily to another folder?. what does it actually do by backing up hese 2 files?

  • Superdrive isn't working, makes loud noise and doesn't read anything....

My superdrive isn't reading anything. I was wondering if anyone knows of what to do. I'm not under the apple protection plan anymore. So if I go to apple they are going to hammer me with labor costs. Maybe someone knows of a good external CD/DVD Burner that will work with iTunes, iPhoto, and iDVD. PLEASE HELP!!! Thankz in advance.

I am getting the exact same error, nothing I do can solve it. I cannot believe it's coincidence that all our drives were due to fail and happen to go at the same time mavericks was installed. So can only surmise it's a as yet unresolved software issue. But worried about spending money on a new drive if it makes no difference.
    Cheers

  • Superdrive is loud compared to G4

When I put a CD/DVD in my G4/933, I could barely hear it, put the same in the MacPro (2.8ghz quad core) and it sounds like it's going to take off. When I watch training disks (Lynda.com, etc) it gets so annoying that I ended up copying the disks to the HD and watching without the Superdrive.
Is this normal? Anyone else notice this?
    TIA,
    Geoff

My MacPro does the same thing when I first insert a CD/DVD. After a minute or so it calms down. The only time it stays in hyper drive is when I've got a disc it his have trouble reading.

  • 20" iMac (white) Superdrive makes loud noise when spinning a disc

When a disc is in the drive and it begins to spin, the drive makes a LOUD humming noise. The noise stops when the disc stops spinning. This has been happening since the first day with my new toy.
Could it be that the drive will need replacing? It is still under warranty.

i would call apple and if they don't have a quick fix make an apptmnt at the genius bar and take the thing in for a replacement. im having the same problem and it really is quite annoying. I really hope apple will replace it with a new drive, this is not what i intended on getting for spending this much money...

  • New superdrive (repair) runs quite loud while watching a DVD

    Hello,
I have a new superdrive (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N) in my MacBook Pro...
Before, I could watch a DVD and the drive was so quiet, that it nearly was not to be heard...
Now, the new superdrive runs with such a speed, that I can hear it in quiet locations of the film, thats ennoying...
Any idea, what can be done?

Hi nik312, welcome to the forums!
If it's a Flash video, what version of Flash do you have installed? 10.1 is a lot faster than v9. But since it also happens in Chess, it could be an issue with OpenGL. Since you've tried the Erase and Install already, I'd try zapping the PRAM by following the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
If that doesn't resolve your problem, I think it might a fault with your graphics card, and you might need another logic board replacement.

  • Superdrive is VERY loud and won't burn discs

The last few times I tried burning a CD in itunes it has not worked properly. As soon as it began burning the songs, the drive started making a loud humming/vibrating noise. After about a third of the way through burning the song files, the disc was ejected, and an error message popped up in itunes saying that there was an unrecoverable error. Not sure if this is related, but the drive also shoots discs out when I eject them, sometimes the discs fly out and roll to the other side of the room... The discs I've inserted have been free of labels so that's not the cause of the problem. (I've read posts of people having issues with labeled discs catching in the drive).
My computer is 3 1/2 years old, so maybe the drive is just dying. My extended warranty is up, so any thoughts to the cost of repair, or if it is an easy repair to do? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Vibration can be caused by an eccentric CD, so stick to brands you know work well. I have the toaster CD ROM, too. I'm afraid you'll just have to remember to catch the CDs as they come out!

Just got a new macbook and when inserting a disk it makes a few "clunking" noises. When the disk gets up to full speed it is pretty loud. Just curious if this is normal.

I hope you can help; progressivelymy superdrive has stopped reading DVDS, it reads blank ones straight away withno issues but dvds, games, movies etc it doesn’t read anymore.
It now wont read abrand new game I bought (the sims late night) and will not read the apple snow leopard disk and wont read any dvds.
It sounds like its working, no loud sounds - it sounds fine then it spits it out.

I live very far from the nearest applestore – 50 miles so it’s a hassle to haul my 27inch imac there.
    Please help!

No these forums are not moderated by employees. that's why they call them Communities, it's all Mac users.
It's also very hard to give you a straight answer just like that. This may sound stupid, but are you sure you're inserting the disk right-side-up?
You can try running the hardware test (if you can reboot from the DVD: reboot holding the C key) but if you have these issues with a Mac under Warranty, it may be best to bring it in. Check with Apple, as ther may be a certified Apple repair shop closer to you.
