Loud tone, fans at max, and a terminal screen at boot up...

Frequently, if this G5 has been shut down, when I start it up, there will be a long loud single tone heard, the fans will spin up to jet engine capacity and I'll get a screen with text and instructions to type in "mac-boot" to continue. Anyone know what this might be?

Sounds as if you are starting in single user mode: follow the instructions [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492]

  • Louder tones for ringing, text and e-mail alerts

How can I increase the sound settings to make the ring tones, text & e-mail alerts louder? I have used the rocker switch on the side to turn up the volume to the max but I still miss calls and alerts. No I am not deaf either!! I am sure other users must face the same dilemma. Thanks. Colin.

i hate to point this out but with 1.1.4 and a non-hacked phone you can make custom ringtones for incoming calls - you have a selection of built in sounds for text msgs but no way of adding custom ones - for the other alerts you can just turn them on or off - you cant chose the sound they make

  • T61 Fan Turns On And Then Off Right Away

When I try to boot my T61 the lights blink, the fan turns on and then after a 1 or 2 seconds the fan turns off and the laptop does not boot up. Nothing comes up on the screen, no beeps as well. I tried to boot the laptop without the hard drive and cd drive but still got the same problem. I also tried booting it up without the RAM (suggested by someone on a different forum) but on trying to do so I would get many beeps.
I started getting this problem today after my laptop froze on me while I was working so I did a hard reboot on it. It wouldn't reboot after that. I had changed my LCD screen and CPU fan around 2 months ago and the laptop was working perfect since the replacement.
Any help on this issue will be highly appreciated.

  • Can loud tones, high pitched sounds, loud music and loud loudspeaker calls destroy iphone 5 speaker ?

Can loud tones, high pitched sounds, loud music and loud loudspeaker calls destroy iphone 5 speaker ?
    TQ

    sounds are air being moved
if exposed to a high enough sound being moved presured impuls then
    any device could take damage
but your speaker which are maded to move sound and be moved by sound
would last longer then mostly anything else if your phone in terms of being damaged by sound
    so the answer is yes
but not likely before anything else in your phone being destroied by the same loud music plus

  • MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Fan Header max Amp and total max amp

    Hey guys,
I just bought this board (not yet arrived) and i am 1 fan slot short on the motherboard so i will be using a Y splitter. I will also use slip streams 1900 rpm (0.53A max), which i won't be using on max rpm.
After ALOT of reading i found many different max Amp values for many different boards. I also downloaded the manual for this specific board but the max Amp or Wattage is not in there, so i hope one of you knows.
If you combine two slip streams 1900rpm on  max settings it will give 1.06A, and i was wondering if its safe to put this on one fan header (maybe the cpu fan header can handle more than the system fan headers). I have read that for some boards the max Amp per fan header is 1A which will be a little short for me and that the total Amp recommended for all fan headers combined is less than when you add them up yourself. My total Amp including the y splitter will be 3.18A
I hope i gave enough info for  you guys and if not feel free to ask for more.

1 amp comes to mind, but in all honesty, you might be better off running directly from the PSU power and/or using an aftermarket fan controller.
And is the 0.06 difference really going to have a negative effect on header / motherboard life time?

  • Loud tone and blinking Sleep LED

    Sup guys
I was trying to do the ole reset the power mangagment thing, but when I did pressed the keys, the computer made the click sound like it was turning on. I kept my fingers on the keys, and then it made this really loud tone, then the sleep LED flashed like 6 times really fast. I let go when I saw that. Got scared. Then I turned it on, and she seems like she's okay. Anyone out there no what I might have done? Was it good, bad? Hope I didn't burn something...might be getting the Macbook sooner than I thought. hehe
    later

    Hi nana,
If all is working well I wouldn't worry too much about it. You may have used the wrong key combination to reset the PMU or, more likely, accidentally pressed an additional key... perhaps the 'fn' key.
Either way since all is working as it should it should not be cause for concern. If there was hardware damage, believe me, you would know about it

  • I just replaced my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan is running and slowly gets louder and louder. how do i turn it off?

I just replace my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan starts running and keeps getting louder. How do i turn it off?
    thanks.

If your machine was made after 2009 you probably installed th wrong HD. Beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that had an integrated fan sensor. If you did not use one of these drives then that is the problem. You should contact OWC (www.macsales.com) or visit your local AASP and they will help you select the correct HD to use.

My MBA fans start running when I play video too - the CPU's video processor is working pretty hard to decode the video. The fans job is to provide better airflow.  The time to worry is when you play video and the fans don't run.

  • XServe fans running fast and loud

    Good morning
I have searched the information base and tried a few suggestions without success.  Hoping for another solution here.
I have an Intel based XServe (2008) (OS 10.6.8) whose fans are running faster (and therefore louder) than they have previously.  This follows on the heels of a power outage (two of them actually) here at school, though the server is behind a UPS.  The system identifier light is also blinking in a particular pattern - 4 flashes and a pause repeating.
The server is up and running, teachers are connecting to it just fine, the RAID is intact and online, the drives all look good according to Disk Utility.  So, functionally, everything looks OK - the fans are just running faster and louder than before - noticibly louder than the other Intel XServe in the rack.  The server is at the top of the enclosed rack with a space below it as it has been for the last 4 years.
This summer I took all the XServes out of the rack, opened them up, and blew the dust out of them (including a moth - truly a bug in the system), so the all the airways are clean and clear.
I have tried the suggestions I could find on this forum:
         restarted a bunch of times
shut down and disconnect everything (including power) for a period of time
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called doing the front panel buttons with the blue lights on the lower row
reset the PMU/SMC or whatever it is called by holding down the power button while disconnected from power
I have installed iStat Pro and the temperatures are averaging around mid- to upper- 30°C and the fans are running around 3000 RPM .  The temperatures aren't signifcantly different that the other XServe, but the fans are running about twice the speed.
I had to reformat the RAID earlier this weekend and copy over the data files from backup and reassign permissions, but the server was running quietly after that was all finished.  It seems to be post-powerbump that the fans became noisy.
Sorry for the long post, but I tried to include all the pertinent information.  I would have tossed in photos and videos if I could have!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    TIA
    Greg

Did a little more searching about setting up LOM on the XServe and I think I have it figured out now.
I assigned a unique (different) IP address to Network 1 in the LOM dialogue box in Configure Server menu of Server Monitor since I only have Ethernet 1 enabled and linked to a switch using a unique (different) IP address for network traffic between the XServe and my clients.
I can now see (via Server Monitor remotely) that I have a dead blower in my fan array which, upon closer inspection, is also evident in the iStatPro display (one fan running at 18 RPM).  Hence the blinking system identifier light and the other fans running faster and harder (and noisier).
Oddly enough, I have a replacement fan array in a box of XServe spare parts.  I now have a weekend task.
Thanks for all the information to be found and the people participating in this forum.  Love it.

  • Macbook pro is not charging, fans running constantly and very loudly

I have a macbook pro 13-inch, Late 2011, until a month or so ago it had been running perfectly with no problems. At some point the magasfe power adapter stopped working, when i plugged it into my laptop there would be no light on it, and my laptop would not turn on or show any sign of turning on, i also tried the charger on my friends macbook and it did not charge hers either, i assumed it was a problem with the charger and therefore bought a new one but then found there was other problems with the laptop, it seems to only turn on when i connect the charger and then quickly press the power button before a light comes on the magsafe power adapter and hold it for around 5 seconds, the light is constantly green on the magsafe power adapter, as soon as it starts up the fans come on and are extremely noisy, the barttery doesn't charge and the laptop only works when connected to a source of power, the battery icon has an x in it and says 'no battery available' i have tried multiple supposed fixes such as resetting the SMC, cleaning the fan, and other things i have seen online but nothing seems to be working, I'm starting to wonder if the battery needs to be replaced? and if that has anything to do with the fans running constantly, can anyone help or having any other suggestions of how to fix my problem?
    thanks

  • Fan Runs strangely and Warcraft 3 and expansion run strangely...

I have been experiencing my MacBooks fan rev up and down and sometimes completely stop for maybe 5 seconds then just rev up again and slow down then get really loud then slow down etc. Is there any way to see how fast my fan is running? And if I need a new fan?
The Warcraft problem is when I am playing the game it will lag and then the sound will repeat multiple time and my cursor will "float". It makes my entire computer stop for a second then act funny for a second then go back to normal. My itunes music will repeat multiple times (like a record skips) also. Sometimes in the worst case the music will completely become just distorted but when i plug my headphones in and out it repairs it. Sometimes when this problem happens there will be a long tone coming from the speakers when this problem occurs I restart my computer.
Can anyone help this?? I know its very strange and quite annoying! So plleaassee help!

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.

  • Help with 655 Max and Possible Memory Problems...

Just recieved my 655 Max and have put my system together, but when I turn it on it makes a constant beeping sound. I tried taking out both memory sticks, lol, and turning it on and the sound stops, I tried putting in one memory stick and the sound starts again.
I suppose this is a memory problem.
by the way I am using Corssair 256mb CMX256a-3200C2 memory.

[The alarm that you are getting is the CPU Fan Alarm you will have to diable it in the Bios. I am using a Vantec Aeroflow  heatsink and my CPU alarm also is constantly on and was very annoying till I disabled it. My system still doesn't boot to XP yet as I have RMA'd bothe the MB and Ram.   QUOTE]Originally posted by TritonB7
Hey Kaiguy the comp does continue to make sounds till I shut the system off. And I'm not sure how a standard pc tone sound would sound like, :(. But it does make beep followed by a lower pitched beep, and it repeats this till I shutdown the system.
    (1) I cannot Access Bios.
    (2) I have two sticks of Corsair 256mb CMX256a-3200C2 memory. I do not have any other ram available that will be compatible with this motherboard. Ive tried using one stick at a time in each of the slots. No Luck.
I highly think that both sticks not working is very unreal.
    (3) and reseting bios by the jumper isnt working either.
I can probably try buying some diffrent memory, or returning the whole mobo and exchanging it for the same one.
By the way on my monitor when i turn the comp on it says 8x Extreme or something close to it while the comp is beeping. I doubt that, that has anything to do with it. This is my first MSI board :( , I've always been an Asus person but Im still open for MSI i'm sure I just recieved a faulty board.

  • LX835 fan cycles on and off (and on and off and...) at idle since 6.20 BIOS

    Hi,
    I have a new-ish LX835-D3215 AIO.
The fan started to cycle on and of constantly about every 30-50 seconds (off) and 10-20 second (on) when the computer is at idle. The CPU temp is about 30% and constant and the fan runs up to 75% of max speed; both according to the PC Health monitor. It does this even when the PC is supposedly sleeping. The computer did not do this OOB, but I believe it started after the 6.20 BIOS upgrade. I have recently upgraded to Win 8 but that has not helped (nor worsened) the problem. The fan winding-up and winding down noise is really infuriating! It is much more intrusive than when the fan runs constantly during normal operation, which is at about 75% and CPU at 42% temperature.
I am disabled and I bought this computer to place by my bedside, and it has become a big disappointment. I have to power down/up or manually hibernate it. (I recently added hibernate for this purpose). I have noted a few other posts of similar fan cycling issues in the forum.
Many thanks for any help. Anyone - please!

I figured it out. Here is what you do; Shut down your mac, then unplug the power cord. Turn your Mac back on and close the lid immediately. That solved my problem.

  • Limit output max and min highlights and shadows via curves or levels or?

Would like to be able to set a max and min output, say 252 RGB / 2 RGB so
that no value outputs outside that range no matter what. Can do this in ACR
with adjusting the endpoints of the curves, but this isn't available in LR.
Using recovery to really pull down the highlights helps, but doesn't
guarantee no clipping and affects a wider range of tones than just the
    endpoints.

That sounds like the cpu overheat alarm. Your cpu may be overheating.  Clean all dirt/dust from the cpu heatsinf using canned air.  Also clean out the power supply with the canned air.  Reseat the hsf after cleaning all of the old thermal grease off it and the cpu.  Reapply a thin coating of new grease on the die of the cpu and then reseat the has, making certain to put it back on the correct way.

  • Since upgrade to 10.6.7, fans speed up and never slow down

I have an Intel iMac, 2.8 GHz i7, 8GB RAM
Just as the subject line indicates:
After upgrading to 10.6.7, when my iMac starts to heat up, the CPU fan RPM will increase but it will not slow down until I reboot - even if I allow ample time for the machine to cool down and let it sit idle for hours.
Right now, the CPU temperature is only 100 degrees F, utilization is at 1%, and the very loud CPU fan is still running at 4000 RPM.
I've reset the SMC multiple times, and this doesn't help.
The most telling aspect is that in the seven months prior, the fan would slow as the machine cooled off.  Not so with 10.6.7
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks

Resetting the SMC was my first thought, but you have done that. You might also try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM:

After that if the issue persists, I would call AppleCare.
