Love the iPhone, hate AT&T

I have had my iPhone since August of 2007. Prior to have it I have had several phones through Verizon. With Verizon, I had not one dropped call (customer for over 5 years). With AT&T it’s hit or miss (mostly miss). Is it just me or is the AT&T service not as good as advertised. I hope they make a model to work on Verizon network!!!!!!

This is relative depending on location, but I find it very hard to believe you didn't have one dropped call with Verizon for over 5 years.
I had been a Verizon subscriber since the summer of 2001 before switching to at&t 3-4 months before the iPhone became available. Verizon let me out of my contract with a year remaining without charging me an early contract termination fee due to very poor reception at my house.
I started out with Verizon in Tallahassee in 2001, moving back to Texas shortly thereafter. I certainly experienced dropped calls on occasion with Verizon between the summer of 2001 and the spring of 2007.
I continue to have a business phone with Verizon, which I've had since February of 2006, and I have dropped calls on occasion. I usually have both phones with me for constant side by side comparison. Sometimes I have better reception with my Verizon, but I have better reception with my iPhone and at&t more often - especially at my house, and the places I frequent most.
There isn't any provider that can provide or claim no dropped calls, which is impossible. Some locations are better than others with all providers.

• Love the iPhone, Verizon is not the same.

My other half purchased an iPhone for me two weeks ago. I have had zero problems with the iPhone itself and I am very pleased. No freezing, crashing, dropped calls (unless there is little or no signal) it's really helpful to me and my busy life.
Up until this point I raved about Verizon and I was impressed with their customer service, pleased with employees knowledge of phones, plans, pricing and features. Ever since this iPhone I have talked to 2 very confused agents over the phone, one aggitated tech and one very confused online chat agent.
I received a voice mail asking me to evaluate my recent experience and that line was unable to complete my call.
I was not made aware that all of my Verizon voicemails would disappear and I am in the middle of a case which requires those voicemails. While they may be gone, I am not impressed that I was not advised of several details involving this iPhone.
I was very excited that Verizon now has the iPhone so I could stay with their service but now I am not very impressed.
If anyone can direct me to a feedback line, emai or something I would be grateful.
I tried calling customer service and the agent said they did not know of a customer service line and they could not assist me in that matter. I am confused as to why customer service cannot provide the service they once had.

That's awesome! I have not yet met one person who knew or was told prior to purchasing the phone. So I see that you are fortunate.
Sorry to say, but the majority of posters on here will tell you that they were aware that voicemails would be lost. If you and your wife never actually researched the iPhone on VZ prior to purchasing (other than talking to a rep) then that may explain why you were not aware, although the VZ stores in my area did tell people when purchasing in store before activating that they would lose their vmails. Unfortunately, it does seem that a lot of VZ CS were not sufficiently trained (at least in the beginning) about the iPhone. At any rate, I would like to point out that even with AT&T if someone switches to the iPhone from another phone they lose their vmails (per info I read on their FAQs for the iPhone and from an AT&T iPhone owner that I know personally...who said she wasn't told by AT&T either that she would lose them). It's unfortunate that you needed those vmails but honestly, if the messages saved on anyone's vmail is extremely important they should investigate ways to save them externally from the network anyway. It's like backing up your data on a computer...at any time for any reason something could happen to that data and those important files could be lost if backups aren't done. Something could happen to the vmail system at any time causing people to lose saved vmails and they would still be in the same boat. True, the possibility seems slim on the surface but the risk is still there. Obviously, all of that is pure hindsight, but it is food for thought (for the future) when it comes to any important data anyone wants to keep.
As far as the CS issues...have you tried looking on the website for a corporate address to contact or doing a search to find this info? Usually, contacting Corporate will lead you in the right direction when call center employees seem unable or unwilling to help. A lot of CS for companies work for a contracted company rather than the old process of having an actual call center or CS center directly within the company. That might explain the decline in CS many feel like has occurred.

• Love the iPhone but Endless Spin with EDGE--Will it Improve???

I got the iPhone one week ago today and although I had a 30 hour wait for activation, all week I have absolutely loved everything about this wonderful product. I could not be more of a fan and have found many of the complaints of others, though obviously sincere, to be without substance in my case...except for ONE!
I can not believe how painfully slow the Internet Access is over the EDGE system. I am so tired of seeing that little Apple Star rotating in ENDLESS SPIN. If I am using WiFi it is fine, but the main idea of having this product for me was to be able to have access to the Internet when I was away from WiFi services!
Sometimes pages will not load at all and I just give up, other times they are so very slow that it becomes hopeless to try to browse or make any use of the connection, and this applies to Safari, Weather, E-mail, Google, and all the other features that connect to the Web.
I am not saying that EDGE does not work at all, or am I suggesting there is any flaw with the iPhone, I assume it has to do with the network, with traffic, or whatever. But my question is, are others having this problem to a degree that it is making you feel depressed about the otherwise wonderful product and its performance? And more important, will it improve?
Do we have any official word on that or even any acknowledgement from Apple or AT&T that there is a problem and that things will get better?
I have recommended this phone to many friends but I have to honestly tell them that this is a problem and if they drop their Blackberry and other services they need to consider this first. I have not used one of the other phones so I have no idea if they are better or worse in this area but I know the iPhone can not be successful without a good Internet connection. The whole idea makes no sense without it!
James

The short answer is really NO. EDGE speed will not get faster. IN fact, it has sped up over the past two months to the maximum in most areas. It is indeed true that some areas have slightly higher speeds than others, but none are super fast. 3G runs at 4 - 5 times the speed of EDGE. My EDGE service either here in Ann Arbor/Detroit or last weekend in NYC never has gone above 160 (some report upto 220 in some areas elsewhere). My old Blackjack 3G phone would never be slower than 880, and usually in the 1200 range most of the time).
That being said, I had a 3G phone from ATT which I hated even though it was fast. I am willing to take the compromise on EDGE for now.
A few hints:
- Edge speed seems to be faster in the early morning and in the evening than during the day when everyone is logging on - if you have wifi at work, switch over to that
- Set up mobile favorites rather than full internet sites -- they work about as fast as the 3G guy next to you on EDGE...for example, I have set up on my phone:
- m.yahoo.com
- m.yahoo.com/p/sports
- mobileapp.espn.go.com/wireless/espn/redesign/index
- webologistdesign.com/gomovies/demo/index.php
- m.USAToday.com
- m.NYTimes.com
IN order, I can check all my mobile favorites on yahoo, my selected yahoo sports teams, anything on ESPN, movies by zipcode (a clever app someone on this web site created!), USA Today, and the NY Times.
There are a lot of mobile (m) websites designed over the years to work with cell phones that are really fast and zippy and give you all the data you need without all the advertisements and photos that take up a lot of time to load on EDGE. Check your favorite websites and you will probably find a mobile version as well. You can even set up a mobile Google site that only looks up mobile websites when you seek data.
Finally, another idea - for those who want their sports scores, ATT has notification text messages you can set up for your favorite teams that will send you the scores at the end of innings, quarters, halftime, or at the end of a game. Pick the teams you want and have the scores sent to you with SMS without any internet lookup time needed. You can turn them on or off as you want from ATT's website.

• Love the iPhone 3G

I had my original iPhone for almost a year to the day and once I heard about the newly updated firmware coming out, I felt it was time to upgrade. I did the same thing as I did last year and used part of my tax refund(of course it cost me less this year, **** you Apple) to upgrade.
I really feel I got my moneys worth this time, one thing I really enjoy is the GPS and I enjoy it way more then I thought I would. I also have really good coverage area most of the time for the 3G signal and I get really good data rates so I actually haven't had to enable Wi-Fi once other then for testing purposes.
I really do thank you Apple for this one. My only complaint so far is the orange haze over the screen instead of the bluer tint on the first phone. At first I thought this was a problem with the phone until I remembered reading about this awhile back when the 3G came out.
Anywho, that's all I had to say. Hopefully this will help someone else make a decision on whether or not to upgrade.

Love it too, especially with the new OS 3.0 coming out soon with features exclusively for the 3G model, including MMS and Bluetooth A2DP. And copy/paste for all iPhones! 'Bout time.

• Love the iPod, hate iTunes, Help?

I've got the 30GB Ipod Photo and I am about ready to give up on ITunes, it just does not meet my needs.
Is there any other way of maintaining my music & pictures on the IPOD?
I want to be able to sync up new podcasts while I am away from home, my IPod is 30GB and my Laptop is 20GB, so putting the whole media library on the laptop is not an option. My media library does not change often and I have it stored on desktops at home.
I don't use playlists, I just have directories of music, that I have invested hundreds of hours ripping to MP3. Do I really have to create playlists? I generally listen to entire albums at a time.
Sorry for the negativity, I have been struggling for a while trying to get used to iTunes, very unsuccessfully.

hiya!
there are various windows-based third party packages that might work for you, but i don't have a lot of experience with them. (TBird is good at this, but i haven't seen him/her around much lately.)
it may be worth checking in over at ilounge or ipod garage forums for testimonials for and discussion of the other packages.

• Love the iPhone, who to complain about activation illegal practices?

Dear Folks,
I got my iPhone, failed the credit check and went with PrePaid. AT&T/iTunes presented me with a page telling my pin/phone # and where to go to fund it. It also had a FAQ saying that my iPhone is fully functional except for the phone part until I fund it.
It's completely locked and Apple sent me an email reminder to fund my account. I am very angry with these business practices.
All I'm looking for is an email to complain about this issue to. This is misleading and illegal.

"Use the form below to send us your comments. We read all feedback carefully, but please note that we cannot respond to the comments you submit."
I want to reach a human being who's going to either fix the issue or issue me an apology.

• Love the phone hate the battery life

So I just upgraded to the Bionic a couple of days ago... I had a Droid X before which in itself was a great phone and awesome battery life! Now with the Bionic is a great phone as well but the battery life leaves alot to be desired...
So far I have been trying different things to see what could be killing battery life:
- Standard battery with phone on factory settings - 4 hrs max
- Standard battery with all power saving, 4g turned off, data turned off as well as wifi and bluetooth - 4.5 hours
I see inthe discussions where the battery life is very good I am just not seeing it
So i went to the verizon wireless store with some questions and was told that 4 hours was unheard of..
Rep sold me the extended battery for the Bionic and i went and left it charge
Here is what the extended battery is doing:
- factory settings - 6 hrs max
- everything turned off and set to power save as before - 9-10
Any ideas about this would be helpful

The battery life on the Bionic is great when compared to other 4G devices. If you purchased an extended battery and still have poor battery life, we know it's not a defective battery. This could easily be the software or an application that is causing the issue. I've personally dealt with a couple 3rd party email apps that drastically reduce the battery life of the Bionic. Have you tried a master reset yet? If you've already done this, and you see no improvement, I would exchange the device under the 14-day Worry Free Guarantee. If you are outside of that period, you can call the warranty number pre-stored in your contact list.
Thanks for posting! Please let us know how things work out.

• I love the iPhone 4s - watch me destroy my Blackberry

After years of suffering with the inferior Blackberry I couldn't stand it anymore. As a Verizon user, I didn't want to jump in with the first version last spring, so I waited for the 4s and I couldn't be more pleased. My Blackberry couldn't bring up 80% of the websites I wanted to go to, it was slow and caused all sorts of problems syncing at work. In fact our IT dept. said that 80% of the problems that had were caused by Blackberry.
I took out my aggressing by destroying my blackberry with a SLEDGEHAMMER!
Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYww3fcV2Lw&feature=share
Ahhh... I feel so much better now.
BLACKBERRY

R.I.P. (Rest in Pieces)

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
Apple has never supported downgrading of the iOS.

• Dont get me wrong I love the iphone but the photo upgrade is terrible. Loads extra albums you cant delete without being online again just terrible. Maybe Im just stupid.

Would love to be able to download an album from my computer then pick and choose at my leisure how and when to delete what I want. Am I missing something very simple here?

• Iphone and at&t - the truth about at&t service for the iphone

i love my iphone.
the only problem has been using at&t in southern california. in los angeles there are major holes in the service, and multiple hour delays on delivery of voicemails and emails. so ive been on the phone with technical and customer support dealing with this for months.
Well, yesterday I was on the at&t support line for about an hour with this nice girl that gave my account a credit and finally told me what's really going on and why at&t service and coverage actually ***** so bad.
here's the scoop straight from their mouths to your eyes:
-when at&t bought cingular they ended up having too many cell towers for monopoly rules, so they had to sell a whole bunch and then lease back the service capacity that their network here needed.
-they've gotten cheap and over the past 9 months have not been leasing the entire network capacity as needed.
-this means dropped calls for you and me, network busy, call failed, no edge connection, and voicemail and email delivery hours or even days late.
-i asked if there was any remedy in the works, and she told me that they have a plan to build more towers but that it was stalled in the bureaucracy. she said the more complaints they got from customers the sooner these towers will be built.
-i asked if they were doing anything for their customers and she told me that they would let people out of their contracts early without a penalty because of these issues!
so, finally i get to the question, how's t-mobile service in southern california? los angeles?
i also want to get a discussion of service going in general. i know network issues are not apple's fault, but they affect the iphone experience and are going to affect the iphone bottom line eventually as more and more customers grow tired of at&t's business antics. apple does have a responsibility to its customers to be working with at&t to resolve service issues so that i can continue to love my iphone (i sleep with it).

adrock00,
Have you been spying on my wife and me?? You are writing, verbatum, our experiences with the iPhone. Same thing - love the iPhone, HATE the AT&T service. It's shameful. I spend a good deal of money a month (paying for two iPhones), and I can not, I swear to you, remember the last time I had a conversation on it without the line being dropped (going through this procedure 3-4 times to complete the call) or completely mangled and incomprehensive for periods of time. Love the 'i' in the iPhone, but hate the "phone" Feel like a fool, really, and stuck. In this land of choices, and quality assurances, shouldn't one be allowed to switch service if the service you signed up for is inadequate. With these contracts, they have you by the cojones and laugh all the way to the bank. Shame.
Fully agree with you, also, that although Apple has provided an exceptional product, that I can not tell enough great things about, it should carry some of the responsibility for forcing us to use the lousy service provided by AT&T.
Just my experience. I'm also in LA, BTW.
Cheers

• New activation of the iPhone

I have been trying to research the costs of a new iPhone. I am currently an AT&T customer and have three lines, only going to get one iPhone for now. I have read that in some cases people's bills have been cheaper than what they previously were. What are some of the hidden costs, activaton fees, accessories, etc. Any suggestion on needs that people may love. Is there insurance through AT&T or Apple. Any suggestions as what the best route to go. Any comments on people's bills. From the posts I have read everything seems to be normal and people just love the iPhone. Thanks for your time. I really just want to know what costs I am looking at when I go in tomorrow.

apple care rocks.......at&t insurance *****. If your phone breaks, they only send you a refurb phone anyways, and refurb phones are nothing but a disaster. If you lose you phone, chalk it up to a loss, don't screw around with refurb.....imho.
Applecare is the first warranrty have ever bought and it worked AWESOME on my iMac, so with this being Version 1 and the amount of use a cell phone gets, having the apple care was an absolute no brainer for me.
I paid $36 and I am with AT&T, so bottom line is it sounds like it varies on who gets it and who doesn;'t

• Is the antenna going to improve on the iPhones ?

I have four iPhones starting with the 3GS to the 5 all have poor reception from AT&T. I'm a contractor and love the iPhone but I need a better antenna for it. I realize the market for smartphones is not suited for this request but a huge market is out there for it. The bars keep dropping as the data packages increase (3G to 4G to LTE) but if I can't get a better antenna for outside metro areas I'll need to switch phones. I DON'T WANT TO but business dictates. Please help.

"Speculation is not the goal of my question "
You asked "Is the antenna going to improve on the iPhones?"
No one would know this. In order to answer your question one would be forced to speculate.
"Please advise if their is a different location to contact apple about such concerns on design."
You can leave feedback for them at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback
They will not respond.

• Why Won't the iPhone Synch So Many Things?

Hello everyone!
Here's the deal:
I have a MBP 17" dual core. Running OS 10.5.1. iTunes v7.5, iCal v3.01, Mail v3.1, and 8GB iPhone v1.1.2.
I can't synch many things to the iPhone.
1. New iCal events and To-Do's
2. Mail. I get a message telling me: "iTunes could not synch mail accounts to the iPhone "dr.john1985's iPhone" because an error occurred remapping record identifiers."
3. Contacts are iffy, but they synch 80% of the time. So that's good. I'd like it to be 100%
4. The troubles started last November, it seems.
It will synch:
1. Photographs.
2 Videos in iPhone/iPod format
However synching newly made appointments on the iPhone back to the computer won't work. Contacts won't work either.
As I've said, neither my POP Verizon or my IMAP .Mac accounts can be synched.
Bookmarks for Safari will transfer over just fine, so no problem there.
I love the iPhone, but things are going a bit foobar on it. Does anybody know what the problem is and what, if anything, can be done?
Thanks Much.....John

{quote:title=rtln wrote:}The iPhone wasn't available last November so I'm going to assume you mean last month.{quote}
There may be a slight component of temporal disorientation here on my part. I think I refer to the fact that the iPhone took in my iCal's appointments, and vice-versa, through the end of November. Then the two stopped synching at the beginning of December. No joy.
{quote:title=rtln wrote:}It doesn't SYNC your email, only the email settings. You would be better off just entering the mail setting manually because there's a good chance the mail servers your ISP requires are not going to work over a mobile network. Everything else is probably a setting incompatibility . You have to specifically tell it what to SYNC. If you carefully read the instructions you may find your errors.{quote}
I think I found that entering the email settings manually and then unchecking "synch mail settings" worked pretty well the last time I tried to monkey with it. I'll try again and see how it goes.
The iPhone book that "should have been in the box" isn't much help for workarounds, nor is the "For Dummies" book. I downloaded the .pdf instruction manual from the iPhone web site at apple.com and will see if this has any clues about the synching and email problems.
Thanks guys. Any further ideas would be appreciated. I really like this iPhone, problems or not. I think this is a winnner, otherwise I wouldn't spend so much time trying to get it to work right.
