Loved my macbook pro for months, now it's a fire hazard!

What in the ****, my mac is on FIRE. I am even using a small thin wooden lap desk and can almost smell the burning wood. When I say hot, I don't mean warm...I mean burns on the top of the knee kind of situation. Yes, I feel the burn, but I am working! :-) I do not have a desktop and instead invested 3000 on this laptop that... between the battery and the botton of this thing, something's going up in flames.
It's clearly not working correctly (a very loud fan/squeaching noise that is well above resonable). Oh, after three weeks I had to double the memory in order to run Cs5. I have taken it to the the genius bar where they replace the charger, but no water on the fire. It's still burnin'! Not to mention it crashes now, is slow, and overall the system just doesn't perform like it did a few months ago. I haven't even had it a year.
At this point, as remarkable as the machine is, I am disappointed because of the problems that are causing the extreme heat in the machine and battery- along with the sudden crashing and various other problems.

Try a SMC reset:

(these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.)

  • Been shutting off my Macbook Pro for months. Will this cause problems?

    Hi,
I only just read today that it's actually best to keep a Macbook Pro on sleep at night and not shut. Is this true? If it is I'll be doing from now on.
Also, I've been shutting my Macbook Pro off at night, every night, even several times during the day if I'm using it during the day. Will this damage it? If so is there anyway to reverse the effects that shutting t down might do?

It makes no real difference whether you shut it down or put it to sleep. Sleep is faster for wakeup than rebooting is. Shutdown saves on electricity or battery power (if not connected to the AC adaptor.)
No harm is caused by shutting down. If you are traveling it's better to shutdown. If not using the computer for a couple of hours then putting it to sleep will let you get back to work quicker.
The computer should be shutdown if it's not going to be used for more than 8-12 hours.

  • Fixing MacBook Pro For Friend - Now Won't Turn On - HELP!

    Good Afternoon -
When it comes to computers, I'm basically a PC guy.  I"m a network admin for a big company and work with Windows all day.  I'm an advid iPhone / iPad user too, though, and do a bit with OSX.
Yesterday, a friend at work and I were talking about his MacBook pro.  He inquired about a few things including Windows 7 on it.  I said I'd be happy to set up BootCamp for him.  While at it, he said that he had purchased a Lion USB drive and asked if he should upgrade.  I've done thousands of Windows installs and a few OSX ones so I said I'd do it for him.
Today, I received his MacBook Pro (Late 2008) 2.4 Intel Dual Core CPU / 2GB RAM, his software, and the Lion USB key.  I booted into OSX and copied his "profile" over the network to a SMB share.  I tried upgrading directly with Lion, but it wouldn't let me as I found out it had to be upgraded from 10.6.X - not 10.5.X.  Therefore, I decided to do a clean install.
I booted to the 10.7 Lion USB drive and went into Disk Utility where I erased the hard drive.  I only erased it - didn't repartition or change drive's format.  Before proceeding, I thought I'd be nice and go one step further for this guy and install new RAM into his computer.  It was 2x 2GB SO-DIMM 667MHZ RAM which I read would work with it and double his RAM to bring it to 4gb.  I installed it.
    The Problem
I turned the computer back on with the Lion USB in and only got a white screen.  The cursor appeared, but nothing else.  I thought that since there wasn't an OS on the HDD, that it would default to the next boot device as PCs do, but it didn't.  I turned it off, then back on again - except - it didn't come back on!
    So that's where I am.  I have a friend's computer which won't turn on.
Note:  The battery is bad I've been told and will always show only 1 light of power.  The power cord is good, though.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    - Removed the battery / power cord for 5 minutes
    - Tried with just the power inserted (Get green light on power cord)
    - Reinserted original RAM (actually did that first and it has stayed that way during all T/S)
    - Swapped RAM into other's socket
    - Removed battery & Power - held the power button down for 10 seconds - reinserted and tried to power back on
    - Got Stressed!!!
Any suggestions would be great - Thanks!!!

"Any suggestions would be great - Thanks!!!"
Have him take it to an Apple store or AASP. (Stay away from Macs. You're a PC guy).

  • What if i leave macbook pro for 15 days without charging?

i am going out of town and i am leaving my mac at home,,,, will this effect my mac's battery cuz it would not be charged!!!!!!
    model no.  md101ll/a

It won't affect to the MacBook Pro's battery life. I recommend you to leave the battery at about 50% or a bit less, but as you aren't going to use the Mac for only 15 days, it's not as important, but you should do it.
It's more recommended when you aren't going to use the MacBook Pro for months. If you want more information, see > http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.

Hi, I had been having the same problem for over a week, but both my window's HP and my 2011 macbook pro barely could load youtube.  What kind of router you have?  I was using a belkin play router that was only 8 months old, switched to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station and now everything works perfect.

    Hi guys.
I've had my MacBook Pro for 2 years now. Last night it suddenly kept glitching to a dark grey screen every now and then, then it would flash yellow / blue spots, and now it won't go past the grey screen even when I reboot it.
I don't think I can access my disk anymore as I've moved across countries since I've first gotten my laptop.  it was working perfectly fine before  it kept going to the dark grey screen with a little blue on the bottom.
If it helps, my camera light is still on, and it seems that my computer is working properly itself, but won't go past this grey screen.
I'm a college student and am really panicking about this - can anyone please tell me what to do?
Thank you & sorry for the long post.

What operating system are you running on it? (iOS 5.1 is for iPhone, iPad...not a Mac).

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie
    Yours Bengt W

Hold down the mouse button or trackpad clicker as you start up.
If no joy, restart and hold the Option key. This brings up the Startup Manager, which will draw an Icon for each bootable Volume. When all are drawn, the Eject key is "live".

So my computer is running on OSX but my question is if any of the viruses on my windows partition can still run and communicate information to their 'master' as there is still a supply of electricity? Sorry if its obvious.
Here's a positive thing: Windows viruses can't run on OS X, but they can be transferred from OS X to other PCs (only if you have them on the OS X volume).

    1. How could a trusted source e.g. Google and Steam contain viruses if they are downloaded from the original source? and
You could get a virus from a different source that infected Steam and Chrome without any problem. Viruses normally try to infect as many files and programmes as possible.

iPhones, iPads and iPods touch can't get viruses but they can transfer them to other PCs. For Windows, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

I have had my MacBook Pro for almost 4 years now. How do i perminantly delete deleted files?

Your situation is not good, then. You will need to erase your hard drive and start anew. Boot from your installer DVD for the OS X version you have installed on it.
I hope you have backups because it's not likely you can backup at this point.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

If i buy a macbook pro 2 months before the new operating system comes is released, can i get it for free?

Generally once Apple gives the official release date, then Macs have become available for up to date pricing.  As long as just the season has been stated, there is no guarantee that Macs purchased during the season in question will get up to date pricing.  So watch http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ the day that the release date is announced.   Past performance is no guarantee of future returns.  Thankfully since 10.7's release Apple's full fledged releases have only been $20 USD, and updates are free to the full fledged release.  I.e. 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 are updates to 10.7.
10.8.1 to 10.8.4 are updates to 10.8.  It was only with 10.6 and earlier the distribution for each full release was at least $99 and up to date were around $20 going back to 10.2.  10.6 is though available on the Apple Store for only $20.

You will need to sign up for your own Apple ID and then buy and download Lion by calling Apple and getting a redemption code.
