Lovely Jubbly MacBook

My MacBook arrived yesterday and i must say being new to Mac its awesome, CTO wk25.
Turned it on when I got a t 9.3O in the morning and turned it off at just gone midnight, it ran no warmer than my windows laptop I'm moving from, no mooing sounds and I did open all I life apps and iwork apps at once, done a fresh install and cleared a nearly 5gb of rubish. Just sweet smooth running all the way
I've have it on this morning on battery to see what the battery life is like, it's been on for 1 hour now and it's still showing 4 hours left, thats with safari open, airport on, BT off and screen resolution low.
No issues with this one!
My only issue is why didn't I change over to Mac's sooner!?

Welcome to the world of Mac.......You won't regret your move. The reason you didn't change sooner is because like many of the multitude we were brain washed.
Now that your a Apple follower you'll spend a lot more money, why? I suppose I could say you'll see......but I won't. Now you'll want all your stuff to be Apple......why? Because it works!!!
Good luck...Good move!

  • Loved my macbook pro for months, now it's a fire hazard!

What in the ****, my mac is on FIRE. I am even using a small thin wooden lap desk and can almost smell the burning wood. When I say hot, I don't mean warm...I mean burns on the top of the knee kind of situation. Yes, I feel the burn, but I am working! :-) I do not have a desktop and instead invested 3000 on this laptop that... between the battery and the botton of this thing, something's going up in flames.
It's clearly not working correctly (a very loud fan/squeaching noise that is well above resonable). Oh, after three weeks I had to double the memory in order to run Cs5. I have taken it to the the genius bar where they replace the charger, but no water on the fire. It's still burnin'! Not to mention it crashes now, is slow, and overall the system just doesn't perform like it did a few months ago. I haven't even had it a year.
At this point, as remarkable as the machine is, I am disappointed because of the problems that are causing the extreme heat in the machine and battery- along with the sudden crashing and various other problems.

    Try a SMC reset:

The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.)

  • Really Loving The MacBook Pro Experience

2 weeks, 2 major problems with itunes. After spending about 2 days getting a 77k library set up on my new MBP, I found about 26,000 of the files weren't read from my external drive and have to manually click on each one to restore it.
Now, in the past 3-4 days, when opening itunes, the beachball hangs for about 10 or more minutes before I can even play anything. I've uninstalled itunes, I've downloaded it again, same thing. I uninstalled it again, and reinstalling it. Didn't work. I don't think Genius is set up on here; I don't see it as a part of my playlists. My files are on a 2tb external h/d, the itunes library is in the itunes folder on my lappy hd. I maxed this out with 8gb of ram and with a 500 gb hd in the lappy I wouldn't expect having this problem. I have Logic installed on here; I hope that isn't the reason for this massive lag. There's 400 gbs of free space on the disc. It's really infuriating and I don't think I have the patience to spend an hour or more trying to delete every little thing and reinstall every thing again.
Are there any simple solutions for either of these 2 crises I'm facing? Simple, as in clicking on something that should be set in the preferences or advanced tab? Or is this going to be another project that I don't have the will to go through anymore?

The computer needs genuine repair service, and not from the "iYogi" scam artists.

  • My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • Bought Used macbook pro, don't have administrator password and don't have the OS disc. Is there a way I can reset or delete the password?

I recently bought a used macbook pro. I can pretty much do everything I need on it until I want to change setting and such things. Then it asks me for an administrator password which I do not know or have. On top of that I do not have the OS disc either. Is there a way I can SAFELY reset or delete the password so I can set my own without the possibility of screwing thing up. LIke I said I can do most anything. I figured this out when attempting to tether it to my smartphone for internet access (I do all the time from my desktop but my desktop is a PC so things are a little different) I am a very new mac user, I have always been a devoted PC user until now. I have to say I am really loving my macbook pro I may just stick with mac from now on (if I can get this problem figured out without too much stress.
I am looking for the safest and best way to fix this issue where nothing I do would mess up the laptop. I can use it now and I do not want that to change, I just want to be able to change my setting and set a password of my own. PLEASE HELP, THANX!

    Hi
There actually is a slightly easier way in OS X 10.5 or greater.
    1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as the computer starts up).
    2. Type: mount -uw /
    3. Press Return.
    4. Type this:
    passwd (user's short name)
Replace "(user's short name)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of user names by typing: ls /Users
    5. Press Return.
    6. Enter a new user password.
    7. Press Return.
    8. Type: reboot
    9. Press Return.

  • How do i tell my iPhone 6 to wifi sync with a new macbook? my last macbook got fried by the cat and I cannot access it

My lovely old macbook running Snow Leopard got fried by the cat.  My new iPhone 6 plus still wants to wifi sync with this dead macbook and how do i tell it that i've now got a new macbook running Yosemite?  It's greyed out on the phone sync page and although i've authorised this new computer I don't know what else to do.  I don't have a back up from the previous computer - the phone was restored in December when I upgraded.

Have you tried getting your old computer repaired, or did your Snow Leopard completely fry it? See what I did there.
If you can, try and scavenge the old hard drive and try and boot from it with Boot Camp (you will need something so you can connect the hard drive to your computer with a USB). A quick Google search will tell you how to do that.
That way if you can get on to it, you can tell your iPhone not to sync with your old computer (which you would be running on your new computer) and instead tell it to sync with your new computer.
I hope this isn't too confusing for you (no offence - I mean my writing, not your knowledge).
    Thanks, Charlie
PS. How exactly did your cat fry your old Mac?

  • Help with 'disappeared' photos after migration to new macbook pro

So I got a lovely new macbook pro and successfully seem to have migrated everything from my old G4 powerbook. But, when I go into iphoto all 3,000 plus pictures have only the slash dotted outline and no images. Any suggestions as how to remedy this. Terence Devlin, you were kind enough to try to help me when I was having trouble with getting my pictures to export edited but we never did figure out the problem, so if you're out there and remember me maybe you can advise me here, as I don't know if anything I did in attempting to resolve that issue would impact the situation now. The pictures still exist on the other computer so it's nothing dire but it's weird to have everything look like it's there (in otherwords, the whole thing is set up exactly as my old one was, with the same albums etc.) but no actual pictures inside.... Thank you!!

    To anwser my own question:
Had to highlight my User Home in finder, and then had to add myself as a user (and click the cogwheel to apply to all files within) and allow myself to 'Read and Write' in permissions.
For some reason, when I migrated across, it didn't add me as a user - even though I was the administrator of both the old and the new MBP!

  • Noise coming out my macbook

Got my lovely new macbook about two weeks ago.
However it seems to make a slight buzzing noise. It goes quiet when you make it think (eg. open an app) bu then goes back to buzzing again.
It isnt very load but quite anoying.
Is this normal? Should i update the firmware thingy? Any advice?

    Hi Gibson,
I have noticed the same noise. However, it's only present when the power cable is plugged in and the battery is charged. Try unplugging the power, if you have it plugged in. I've read that other people experience this issue, and I guess it is "normal".

  • Macbook Pro- weak wifi solutions ?

New Macbook Pro weak wifi ??
I am also experiencing weak & varied signal strength on my Macbook Pro. I recently switched from a Macbook & have noticed side by side that the macbook has better internet connectivity & signal strength. I have thought about buying the Apple Time Capsule Router ( & back-up) or Airport Extreme. I am curious if I can expect better signal strength & distance.... This is really annoying as I loved my Macbook for many reasons & have handed it off to one of my sons.. Any info about the signal strength & distance I may expect to get ??

    Hi
I've had a similar problem - see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7278377#7278377 . Things continued to get worse, so that sometimes I was losing the signal for several hours at a time: meanwhile my nearby G4 iMac continued to connect with never a hiccup.
In the end replacing the original airport card with a Sonnet Aria Extreme N Mini PCIe 802.11n card has (touching wood, crossing fingers and taking all similar necessary precautions) completely sorted it. No other changes - I'm still using the 11g base station. However, mine was a first revision MBP with an 802.11g card: I guess yours has an 11n card already.

  • Loving OSX with a few questions

    Hey Everyone!
I'm loving my macbook; it's a beautiful machine that just works. I just have a few questions that would make my life easier.
First: How do I "unlock" files. I've put some files in my trash-bin, actually about 600 files and for some reason they are all locked. I don't feel like going through the entire folders unlocking each file. I've tried going into get info and unlocking entire folders from there but to no avail. Is there a way to unlock about 4 trillion (actually about 600) files with just a few clicks so that I can easily empty my trash? It's starting to smell and grow mould.
Second: Is there any way to "lock" the computer. Basically the equivalent of logging off but I want to be able to come back to the state that I left the computer in.
Third: I can't remember so only two questions!
Thanks a lot for all of your hlep!

Good point about the backing up the installers, as some /Applications may put data and essential files in other locations like /Library/Application Support or other locations something like that. If you just back up the /Applications, then you might miss some other important files required to run the software.
To get proper permissions when you backup files use a software utility like Restrospect, Deja Vu, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
On the menu bar, your log in name should drop down a menu that lets you return to the log in window while remaining logged on, so you can activate the screen lock immediately without having to wait for or activate the screen saver. You don't have to log in as another user. Authenticating restores your previous session.

  • Macbook Pro 13 Getting Super Hot!

This is my second question on the communities! I'm loving my Macbook pro 13 (non retina) but I'm a big Minecraft player,  I found that when playing minecraft after about 10 or so mins the fans would get really really loud.  So I downloaded temperature monitor and watched the temps, as soon as a cracked up Minecraft my GPU (intergrated) was reaching 95c without the fans getting super loud and the CPU proximity was about 75-80c.  So... is there something I can do to improve my temperature or am I just going to have to stop doing semi-graphicly intensive tasks.  On the other hand I have enough to buy myself an iMac?  So would an iMac be able to handle it at a much lower temperature?  I know i'm a noob but I recently got a Mac and am really new to this.  Thanks in advance

Installing Mt. Lion will not increase the performance of your MBP.  actually it may slow it down.  10.6.8 is still the most efficient OS from Apple.
I suggest installing a larger and faster HDD.  A 7200 rpm drive or perhaps a hybrid.  A SSD is still too expensive for the advantages it affords (my opinion).
Backup up your data to an external HDD and do a 'clean' install.  Erase the internal HDD and reinstall 10.6.8.
From the external HDD, select what you want and leave the 'junk' behind.  This can result in a rejuvenated MBP.
Regarding the heat issue, I suggest opening the MBP and see if there is dust and debris inside.  If so clean it out.  A clean reinstall should resolve any software issues unless you have third party applications such as AV apps or MacKeeper or the like.

  • Safe to use white acrlilic (i cant spell it) paint on macbook?

    hi all,
my macbook has a lot of scratches on the front, and I have tried lots of scratch removers, and they dont seem to work well. I wondered if I could paint over the scratches using whit acrillic paint. Can I? Is it safe?

    Hi,
I just got my lovely glossy Macbook this week, the cat had ran over it and left a scratch running left to right across the front!
I used T-cut automotive polish, applied lightly with a duster in small circles, to my amazement it worked, all gone, thank god!
Give it a try, it works a treat!
    James.
P.S Just bought a Macbook the day before the new release, but it is a joy to use compared to the old G4 powerbook!

  • Using iPhoto and PhotoShop Elements together

    Hi all,
I purchased my lovely little MacBook Pro a week ago and the onyl problem I have had so far is dealing with iPhoto.
I love using iPhoto to upload and browse my photos, however I prefer editing them in Photoshop Elements.
I have found I have the following problems:
    - Cannot open a photo from within Photoshop Elements
I have got around this my right-clicking the iPhoto Library folder within Pictures, selecting the Open Selected Items (or something like that), then when I have found the photo, again right-clicking and saying Open with PhotoShop Elements.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    - Once I have edited my photo in Photoshop Elements, I can't view the edited photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas?
    - In iPhoto, I like to create an Album of photos I would like to edit or upload to my online development company, but iPhoto doesn't seem to save albums in any searchable fashion, so I have to manually move each one into a folder on my desktop. This creates 2 copies of the same photo, which will eventually use a lot of hard disk space.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    Many thanks,

    Sascha
As Larry points out, you need to set PSE as an external editor.
The Right Click Hack is unsuported, and more importantly, is precisely why you can't see the changes in iPhoto.
You can set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
Albums are virtual entities - there is no corresponding folder of images. So, create the album, do your edits as described above, then to upload, if you're development doesn't have an iPhoto export plug in, select the Pics and go File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. iPhoto will create a copy of the pics incorporating your changes. Upload from there - and after your upload is finished, trash the copies on the desktop - your pics are safe in iPhoto.
