Low Airport signal in menu bar?

Hi,
I had a 2ghz Mac Pro (with airport) that died so Apple replaced it with a 2.66ghz model and i had airport and bluetooth fitted at the Apple store when i collected it.
Now here's the rub: the new mac is in ther same position as the old one (as is the wireless router) but the airport status icon in the menu bar nearly always has the top section greyed out, ie 3 black bars rather than 4 as on the previous Mac.
It does sometimes go "all black" but is mostly greyed out?
Is this a dodgy airport card or can i do anything?

No, this might not be normal.
Other users (including myself) have reported problems with Airport and BT. But so far I have not read a statement from Apple.
Fact is, that some Mac Pros are reported to have very low Airport speeds although the Mac previously owned (in the same position, etc.) ran on full speed. Me, myself and I are getting a third of the speed I used to get, BT is unusable at this stage.
User reported also, they fixed their BT probem by switching around the antenna cables. But a you are not writing about choppy mouse movement or similar, I guess you are fine.
If you have a fast connection and know that max speeds you had then you can easily test if your are still running at high pace (during normal surfing you hardly see a difference).
Regards,
Armin

Open your System Preferences and go to the "Network" pane. Enable "Show Wi-Fi status in Menu Bar".

  • Airport icon in menu bar gone

Hi! My airport icon has disappeared from the menu bar at the top right of the screen....how do i get it back? Thanks!
    lara

    Hi lara
Go to System Preferences - Network - Airport, and click "Show Airport status in menu bar".
The menu bar icons are very easy to drag off if you hold down the cmd key accidentally. You can also rearrange them by holding down cmd and dragging them left and right.

  • Missing airport icon in menu bar HELP PLEASE

Okay, I have a g4 powerbook that came with tiger.
I am missing the airport icon that once was there in the menu bar at the top right-hand side.
What I've done: ran disk utility, = all's well, check for software updates = all's well there too., and the most obvious, check the box under system pref. for airport config.
I check it and it is does, nothing. I go back to system pref. and is unchecked again.
IM AT A LOSS. Anyone with this problem PLEASE help.
    thanks...

    muecyl,
Do not concern yourself with the other files that you found at that location. Just leave them where they are.
Since your problem is also related to some extent to System Preferences, you may benefit from trying the procedures outlined by Dr. Smoke in Try the following....
Another possibility is to download and reinstall the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC.

  • Airport Security in Menu bar

I notice that the new airport menu bar minuet marks 'other ' available systems as locked/not locked with an icon. I think I have mine (WEP etc.) set up correctly; should I also see an lock icon for my system or not? Or, does the lock icon for other systems in my area mean something else?

I think that if the password to the network is in your keychain then the lock icon won't show up.

  • Low-contrast embossing & translucent menu bar

Folder icons are now rendered with low-contrast embossing, making them much harder to identify at small sizes. The same problem is amplified by the new Menu Bar, which is translucent and can be difficult to read if used in combination with the wrong wallpaper.
I see this as one of the biggest grips so far of MacOS 10.5.0. It can be fixed really easily. Maybe in some small update, i.e.: 10.5.1, Apple could give us the option to darken or lighten the embossing by use of a slider in the preference panel. Also, maybe Apple could give us the choice to make the Menu bar solid or translucent by means of an "on/off" button also in the performance pane. Just an idea. Either way, these "problems" are so small as to make me wonder if people just have to gripe, just to hear their own voice.

  • Airport icon in menu bar keeps disappearing

The Airport status icon in the menu bar keeps disappearing.
Even when I go into System Preferences/Network/Airport and activate the showing of the icon there and then click the little padlock to prevent changes, at the next startup the icon (almost every time= 99% of the cases) is no longer visible in the menu bar.
    Can this be solved?

Of course it can be solved. Can I solve it? Probably not.You may want to search for a solution in the AIrport Forums.

  • Airport Icon In Menu Bar for 10.2.6 operating system

I can't get this icon to appear even after I select it in network settings? If anyone can help with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Try excluding the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file. This file keeps track of the items in the right side of the menu bar, except for the Spotlight icon.

  • AirPort status not showing up in menu bar...

I just started up my computer, and looked at the menu bar for the status of my AirPort connection, and found that it's not shown...
Nothing in the troubleshooting manual tells me how to turn it on-- it only tells me that it should always be on.

    Try the following ...
    o Launch System Preferences
    o Show > AirPort
o On the AirPort tab, enable "Show AirPort status in menu bar"

  • Airport Signal stays low on imac g5 isight, even with new card.

I am a fairly new user in the mac world & until now have had no problems.
However the problem I have is a poor Airport signal mainly two bar droping to one, occassionally the signal gets stronger, this has only just started during the last couple of months.I really noticed the problem when downloading podcasts,as it began to download, then froze & ultimately lead to the internet connection timing out.I contacted the local store who have always helped me before they took the imac in,tried everything finaly putting in a new card, this worked fine in their shop but again didn't at home.My son has a imac g3 next to mine also on the wireless network & his signal is full strength. My machine is back at the shop where they are now going to try a new antenna. As you can see from my post I am not very technical but has anyone had any similar problems & found any different answers.

I did not see resetting PRAM mentioned yet, so if not done already, do that
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
plus this procedure to reset SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to follow it precisely. When you reconnect the power cord, if you are using a crowded or old power strip, connect it directly to a wall outlet for this test. Power it up with nothing connected except power cord and once it starts up, connect only your keyboard/mouse (no other USB/FireWire peripherals). Try using it that way to see if the problem still recurs.
The only other suggestion I have is, if you have a external FireWire drive that you can erase (or create a small partition on), install a fresh Leopard installation on it. Start up from it and see if this problem still recurs.
Alternately, back up your data, erase (re-partition and reformat) the interal drive, and reinstall Leopard on the internal drive, then give it a try. If you clone (using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to an external FireWire drive as your backup, you can still boot from your current installation (on the external drive). If the fresh installation test does NOT work, you can clone your clone back to the internal drive. If it does work with a fresh installation, you can keep using it and transfer just your user data back from the clone.

  • Airport icon disappeared from menu bar

For one of my two Users, the Airport icon disappeared from the menu bar. Now I cannot turn Airport on or off. Internet Connect only shows the internal modem. Restarting the computer did not solve the problem.
It has worked well until yesterday, all of a sudden the icon was gone. Airport Admin does work, and it restarts the base station when I change something (I changed the password just to test this). So the hardware is working.
If I log on as a different user, the icon is there, and everything works as normal. It therefore seems to be a set-up problem at one of the users.
I would appreciate any help on this one.
    Thanks in advance,
    Maarten

    Maarten,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Network. Select the AirPort Entry from the list of Network Devices, and click the "Configure..." button.
If not already there, navigate to the "AirPort" tab, and check the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" checkbox at the bottom of the window.
This should put it back up there.
Let me know if you need more help.

  • Poor Airport Signal

I have a macbook pro with Mac OS 10.4.11, and I have noticed extremely low airport signals on my laptop. I thought maybe that it was always the routers I was using, because my laptop is in perfect condition, and i had not changed anything on it. But I know that it is my Laptop because I have a router in the room next to me, and the signal strength bars remain at 2-3, when they should be full. Also, I am a university student, and in my classrooms I can see other people on their Mac AND windows laptops, and they are all browsing the web easily, while my laptop wont even pick up a signal, and if it does it will be for 2-3 seconds.
The range is supposed to be 150 feet for my airport, and i am no more than 15 feet away from my router with a 3/4 full signal strength. pitiful.
can anyone help? I know others have been having the same problem as me. Will Apple do anything about this if my warranty is expired?

Hi eraserface, and a warm welcome to the forums!
First thing to do is check for a loose or frayed Antenn, or loose card.
There are some USB options that'd be cheaper than a repair though...

  • Airport signal cutting out on internet?

    HI
Just changed over to a 20" intel imac from a white G5 imac and started getting an annoying little problem with airport signal.
The signal strength bar of the airport card on my mac, randomly will drop to one/two bars (normally i'm full signal) - when surfing on the net. The result of this is that pages will either fail to load or become REALLY slow loading. I can resolve the issue by turning off/on the airport from the menu bar - but this is become a pain and I wondered if anybody else had had this issue?
The mac is in the same position as the older one and this never had this issue - so I was wondering if this an intel Mac thing? I've tried Safari, Firefox and Camino and they all do it - so it's not the browser? Any suggestions.....

Well - I did a factory reset which seemed to work and I also increased "Strength robustness" in airport settings - so at the moment it may have solved that issue.....However now another issue has started - !
Whenever I put the iMac to sleep and wake it up the network is lost? The airport express settings are still all there - because my iphone can still use the airport, however the iMac cannot see it? I did select a closed network - could this be the problem? I allowed the airport to access my keychain - but could this be the issue? I also wondered if the issue is arrising from the fact that the new iMac is 'n' compatiable wireless card - yet the airport express is the older type (a,b & g only)? Anybody else had compatiability issues with this - I don't think you're meant to have issues with 'backwards' compatiability? Any offers..............

  • My Finder menu bar and screen is flashing.  Is this a virus?

The icons (file folders, Hard Drive icon, etc) on my desktop and the Finder menu bar started flashing off and on, last night. I can use Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. from the Dock, but it is a challenge to click on Airport on the menu bar to get on line. I shut the computer down, removed-then reinstalled the battery and restarted the computer, but the flashing began right away, again. I had exported some photos to desktop which landed atop the Hard Drive icon. I move them as quickly as I can, but the screen flashes and puts them back, so I can't access the Hard Drive. I had viewed a QT movie someone sent me earlier in the evening and also clicked on several photos in MySpace. I wonder if one of those could have done it.

Just starting up with the install disk won't erase anything.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart the computer and at the same time insert disk1 into the slot while holding down the option key.
This should bring up a screen showing two different startup options.
Pick your disk that you inserted.
You will eventually get a screen with a window opened showing the Mac install file. Don't use this.
Up top on the menu bar should be a pull down menu that will give you an option of disk utilities.
Use the repair permissions function and disk repair function. These will not erase anything.
The reason I'm not clear on the position of the menus is that I'm at work on a peecee.
Try this and let us know..

  • OSX Menu Bar Icons Keep Disappearing

Sometimes after a restart, items previously displayed in the OSX Menu Bar disappear.
    This happens consistently with :-
    - Date and Time : the pref item 'Show the date and time' becomes de-checked.
Re-checking it displays the date and time icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Displays : the pref item 'Show displays in menu bar' becomes de-checked.
Re-checking it displays the Displays icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Airport : the pref item 'Show AirPort status in menu bar' becomes de-checked;
Re-checking it displays the Airport icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Fax : the pref item 'Show fax status in menu bar' becomes de-checked;
Re-checking it displays the Fax icon in the Menu Bar.
    - Bluetooth : the pref item 'Show Bluetooth status in menu bar' is STILL checked, but the Bluetooth icon is not displayed;
Un-checking and then re-checking it displays the Bluetooth icon in the Menu Bar.
I have not observed a connection between this problem and any activities prior to restart - but the icons above usually (not always) disappear together. I know other users have this problem and that it has been addressed in a number of posts - but I am still looking for a reliable solution ...

I am having similar problems. The items are usually disappearing when I move them using Cmd+Mouse Drag. For example, when I move the clock it disappears. However, stranger is that when I re-enable the clock display in Preferences, new clock appears, but the "hidden" time is present as well - I can get the time status item menu from blank space. I managed to have 5 hidden clocks there. Other items disappear as well.
I tried to kill SystemUIServer - all items were removed, only spotlight icon was present. Then I reenabled all the items I wanted to have there. This kind-of fixed the problem. But still ... moving items will make them hidden, but still present in the menu bar.
    I am using OS X 10.4.10
    I have reported this (Bug ID# 5486548).
