Low Audio Level for USB Audio device

Hello,
I'm recording a voice over for a keynote presentation.
-The internal mic records just fine, but when I use an external usb mic, the level into keynote registers very low.
- in the system preferences the audio input for this exteral mic is perfectly fine.
-the mic has been tested in a pc and records just fine at a good level
-the same thing happens when I run a mic through a mixing board and use the line in on the mac...it shows up fine in audio settings, but has a low level in keynote.
any ideas?

I'm glad you mentioned the preset, Silal. I kept meaning to bring that up, but forgot.
Set Preprocessing to None. That will keep high level short duration sounds, like drums, etc., from overtaking your dialog, and crushing it.
The way DIALNORM is intended to work, you set it to the average level of your dialog from your editing app. If you're working in FCP, then that might be something like -12. That setting will cause the player to attenuate the level so dialog is attenuated by 19dB (-31 minus -12 = 19dB of attenuation by the player).
That, in turn, allows the ridiculously loud music and nat sounds in the film soundtrack to sound "more natural", as they blast your ear drums into bits. "More natural" means "much louder than dialog, just like they are in real life".
Bah, humbug! Let me hear what the talent is saying. I don't care if I can hear every nuance of that rock ballad, I just want to be able to follow the story, the plot.
Hey, I'm an old dude, you whippersnappers.
But back to the point, by setting DIALNORM to -31, the player works out the math like this:
-31 minus -31 = 0dB of attenuation
So, your level should be exactly what it was before the compression/conversion. Why it isn't is a mystery, still.

  • Need Laptop Audio Amplifier for USB Connected Speakers

For a laptop, does Creative have any kind of audio amplifier for USB connected speakers?
I think the laptop has what is called an Express 54 slot.
I am looking for amplification suitable for speakers, not headphones.

If their only connection to the laptop is via USB than you can't amp them without doing some internal modifications. It means the speakers have their own audio device internally which is receiving signal via the USB port, processing it and then outputting it via likely a weak amp stage to the speakers - you'd have to physically intercept that last part of the chain to add an amplifier.
Not saying it can't be done but you're looking at either harvesting an existing amp (which Creative don't seem to sell) or creating one from scratch (like the Penguin Mint amp, Objective 2, etc) for the purpose.

My IPad 2 external speaker does not work and the original headphones have popping sound when used. This all occurred at the same time as my IPhone and IPod headphones only plays mono (and no, the "mono" option is not on) with the original headphones, as well as, other headphones tested.  How can there be audio issue for all these devices at the same time?
As you may have noted from the list of Apple devices I own, I believed in the Apple and the products it was producing; but it is hard to believe from my experience and the other voices within the Apple Community that we are all experiencing the same hardware issues. Especially since I recently, I upgraded to an IPhone 4g (no, my faith in IPhone 5 series is very little) and is experiencing the same audio problem as described above. So now, I am off to the Apple store again to be told that it’s a hardware problem on new IPhone. Really? Apple, what happen to the pride in the product you were producing?

Everyone does things a little differently. I love to "jam " along with iTunes ( or old Lp's) . Always have. That's where/how I've learned to play .
I'm sure leonieDF is giving a proper way to jam along on a keyboard with an iTune. He blows my mind all the time with what he knows. Nuff respects to him !
What I do is make a GB project I call "Jam With". I'll make several new tracks that are blank. Just has a few instruments named in the blank tracks. You can change those per song ...
Because I'm not concerned about changing the pitch / key.... of the iTune or the tempo ... I can simply play along with it.
    Peace,

  • M-Audio Mobile Pre USB audio interface compatibility w/ FCP

I am trying to do voiceovers in FCP with my mic connected to the XLR input on a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB audio interface.
The first time I did this, even though I got a signal in System Preferences audio input, I would get no signal in the Voiceover Tool window in FCP. I know I chose the correct source, input and rate for the device. I rebooted and it worked. Then on another day a reboot would not make it work. Now I can’t make it work again. Upon opening FCP with the USB interface connected OSX crashed. This almost never happens ether with the system in general or since I installed FCP 5.1. This has happened twice. I also started this whole process by updating to the newest driver for the M-Audio device. I liked the sound I got when it worked so any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks for that link...that's what I saw months ago, and I realize I got a few of the specifics mixed up. UNFORTUNATELY, I tried those tips and I still have the exact same problem. I also went to M-Audio and downloaded the most recent driver. I did a variety of starts and re-starts where the unit was connected or not upon start up...whether phantom power was on or off at start up, etc etc. And by start up I mean both starting GB only, and/or starting up my Mac. I tested using the interface through both of the USB ports. All yield the same result. The only thing I didn't test yet is changing the USB cable itself.
Any more thoughts? You think the interface is bad?

It seems that you do not understand the problem at hand. I can listen on a m3u list using iTunes, VLC and other players, but I wish to listen on m3u lists as streaming music when I am on sites such as eMusic. For instance, I cannot listen on sample music at eMusic, but must download it first. Thus, it is not possible to listen on streaming music with Firefox. On the other hand, Opera and Safari handle m3u streaming music very well.
Can you listen streaming music or samples at eMusic using Firefox without downloading m3u-list on your local disk?

  • Adobe Audition 3.0 "Audio Hardware Settings" for USB Audio Interface HELP!

    Hi guys.
I’m after some help in the internal settings of Adobe Audition 3.0 whilst I’m trying to run my condenser mic through my ART USB Dual Pre.
I have the USB Dual Pre all set up in my Windows 7 set up (it automatically becomes the default recording device when it’s plugged in), phantom power enabled, XLR cable plugged into the right socket of the two available (is there any difference? I’m just recording voice tracking for radio announcements), headphones plugged into the monitoring jack at the back. Levels are turned up enough that they will pick up the noise, if there was any.
I go to the “edit” tab in Adobe Audition 3.0, hit record and nothing comes up. I’m not getting any sound at all registered on the computer. I’ve downloaded and installed Asio4All, but can’t for the life of me figure out the configuration within the “Edit > Audio Hardware Setup” to make the damn thing pick up my voice. There’s mention of Audio Drivers (Asio4All or Audition 3.0 Windows Sound), USB Audio Codecs, Input/Output… it’s enough to make a man who’s not very good at this sort of thing cry (ie. Me).
Could anybody help a body out, please? I think I’ve done everything right except the configuration within Audition itself. A helping hand would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

    Hey there,
Thanks for your reply! I'm not too good at describing what I'm doing, so I've taken screenshots of all the options in "Edit > Audio Hardware Settings" under Edit View and Multitrack view. They include both Audio Drivers available (which were Asio4All and Audition 3.0 Windows Sound) and the associated Default Input/Output options, as well as the Audio Driver control panels and the options that were checked/unchecked on them.
If anybody could tell me how to configure this so I can actually record from my USB Dual Pre, that would be one better than I can do!
    Thanks heaps.

  • Audio Level for documentary

    Hello Everyone,
I am currently editing a short documentary focused on a Rock band. As I never really spent many energies on Audio in my previous projects, I would like to be precise in this one.
Does anybody knows what are the audio levels that I should mantain for dialogues? I heard that they should stay below 12-dB. Is that true and is there anything else I should know?
In addition, I obviously will put rock songs during the film, is there another rule for music?
And my last question is, whenever I want the interviewees to talk, with the music on the background, what level should I decrease the songs so that they don't interfere with the dialogues?
    Thank you so much!

    Richard,
    Really? That low?
I generally find that setting the total output to -6 or so makes it about the same level as commercially made videos - like from Vevo.
Just to make sure, I downloaded a video of Maroon 5 running all over LA to play at weddings (I know - illegally - but only for a test) and put it into Premiere Pro. I set the audio to max out at -6 by putting in a -6 gain. I took turns playing it back from YouTube and from Premiere Pro and it sounded like the same level to me. A non-scientific test of course, but it seems reasonable to me.
If you want to recreate the test, I downloaded this video:
I used this web site to do it. Free Online YouTube Downloader: Download YouTube Videos, Facebook and many others!
It doesn't make you download any software. I imported the resulting MP4 and set the gain to -6. You do it and see how you feel about it.
Please, anyone reading this, do not use other people's work in your own videos. This is for the purpose of testing only.
As for how low the music bed should be under the speech, that is something to be experimented with. Just make sure that the total lever is around -6.

  • Audio Level for the web

What audio level does one set for video files to be viewed on a web page? (specifically Flash)
I realise there is probably no "Standard" for this but what process/levels have others used.

Firstly - I have followed Andrews advice and peaked to just under 0db. (This is what I would do for a DVD export as well since I am not coping with Broadcast reference levels.) Thanx Andrew (I dont usually do web work so needed some tech reasurance)
    Heres the go.
No the site I linked to is not my work but I am doing exactly the same for that same client (and a different product range). Just a litle more interactive. User will click on a Q and A and the subjects will answer.
The client is not only concerned about technical details (which they leave to me), they are also concerned about the aesthetics and design. They did not want a player visible at all.
The design for all their work is covered by a "style book" so we all follow that for all work. Basically it is "clean/fresh".
The idea of a clean screen without the player visible fits this concept and it is cool and fun. Suits the target audience. Teens/ youth.
I deliver flv with alpha (and swf) to the web guys who bolt it into the page and to the Q/A links.
I shot green screen then keyed the characters. I then composited the two characters beside each other for a large number of clips. The characters give the impresion of interacting with each other. Heads turn to each other at various times. Some of the clips are looped but all needed registration to avoid "shifts". Time consuming but great little project
The movie can be stopped by simply clicking another Q/A link or other stuff on the page. If this is done the characters simply stay on screen in their "Iddle/Wait" state. They do not dissapear of the screen. This maintains the look and design.

  • Adjusting audio levels for authoring

    Hello,
Is it possible to raise the audio levels in Encore so the levels are higher for the muxed DVD than the source audio files themselves?  Is there a way to do this in an Encore timeline?
    Thanks,
    Mtbakerstu

    Welcome to the forum.
Audio Level/Gain adjustment will need to be done in PrPro, or perhaps Audition.
    Good luck,

  • What is the best audio level for making a CD from video?

I know that -12dB is the optimum level for making a DVD. When I took this same level (peaking at -12dB), exported it to AIFF and then put it into iTunes and burned a CD, the volume was definitely lower than other CDs.
Does anyone know the standard level for CDs?
I'm doing this to convert a video of a concert into a CD.

The standard for CDs is basically -0.1. Generally, at least with pop & rock, the mastering stage puts the levels as loud as they possibly can be without distorting.
Plus, with content like music that is a little more consistent (level-wise) than dialog, SFX, etc., it's easier to ride it up closer to zero.

  • Hi, with mix16 pro app, can anyone tell me when you set different audio levels for different tracks, does the app remember the level set the next time you use it?  Or does it default to the original setting when you power down after a show?  Thanks!

    Hi
I use backing tracks for some songs with a live band and we are having some issues with levels.  Some are higher than others etc.  I use i pad to run the tracks.  I am looking for an app that where I can control the levels better.  Ideally, an app where I can set the level of each track to a desired level and leave it at that level for good.  Mix16 Pro  seems to do that but I wonder does it save the setting as I do not want to set the levels every time I use it.
    Thanks

  • Recording with M-Audio Fast Track  USB Audio Interface

New Mac owner and am completely lost. I am wanting to record guitar and vocal tracks into GB and when I plugged in the M-Audio I could see a wave file when after I hit the record button but I couldn't hear anything. I selected it as the default for input and output and turned the monitor on...but am getting zero sound. HELP!

I actually just picked one up and this is what the process is...
I must reiterate the first line... Do not install any of the packaged software as it does not help, or do anything beneficial... just use Garageband.
This is to record a plug in guitar.
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO LOAD ANY DISCS THAT COME WITH THE DEVICE
    1. Connect M-Audio Fast Track USB to appropriate USB port on computer.
ex. MacBook Pro - use forward port (port furthest away from display)
Also, see note 2 for M-Audio knowledge base, support etc...
    2. Open System Preferences and:
-Select M-Audio Fast Track USB icon
-Select "About" button and note Audio Firmware version
-Select "Updates" to open M-Audio web site
-Select: USB Audio Series<Fast Track USB< MAC OS 10.5.7 (or appropriate operating system)
-Note version number of latest drive and download if
    necessary to update your M-Audio
    - Select "Sound" in Hardware row of System Preferences
-Select "Input" button and select M-Audio Fast Track USB
    - No need to change "Output" regardless of how you want to listen to playback!
    3. Connect guitar to M-Audio box (a pre-amp will boost output, but is not necessary)
    - Make sure button on rear of M-Audio box is selected properly for guitar
    4. Open Garage Band (Do Not open Garage Band prior to connecting M-Audio)
    - Select New Project - Electric Guitar
    5. Open Garage Band Preferences
    - Select "Audio/MIDI" button
    -Audio Output select:
    - "Built-in Output" to use computer's speaker or headphones/speakers connected directly to computer OR
    - "M-Audio Fast Track USB" to listen to headphones/speakers
connected directly to M-Audio box (use Mix knob and Output knob on front of M-Audio box to control ouput if choosing this set-up)
    -Audio Input select:
    -"M-Audio Fast track USB"
    6. Choose an Amp model in Garage Band
    - Double-click picture of amp (this displays rear picture of amp and access to settings)
-Select: Input Source : Mono2(M-Audio Fast Track USB) NOT MONO 1!
of if using Mic and guitar : Stereo2 (M-Audio Fast Track USB)
    7. Record
This saved me from throwing the thing out the window... It works well now!

  • MOH Fixed Audio-Recognizing MOH-USB-Audio on 7835

I am trying to set up a Cisco MOH-USB-Audio card (which is actually a C-Media UTA3100).
On a MCS7825 with OS 2000.4.4aSR8 this is no problem. With a MCS7835 and same OS it doesn't work.
It displays the card in Hardware-Device manager.
But in Control Panel-Sounds&Multimedia-Audio-Sound Recording-Preferred Device I get no recording Devices.
So it seems to be platform dependant.
Does anyone have an idea how to get it to work on the MCS7835 ?
    Kris

The Cisco supported card is :
    ? Griffin Technologies iMic USB
A USB sound device supported in Cisco CallManager Release 3.3(5) and later, with Microsoft Windows 2000 (OS 2000 version 2.7 or later). This device is supported on all Cisco MCS-78xxH or MCS-78xxI servers with 3.0 GHz or greater processor.
Here are the instructions on how to set Fixed Audio Source up :

    * - On the MOH configuration page, for 'MOH Fixed Audio Source Device' enter the name of
the soundcard that you installed. This name must be entered exactly as found in the
'Sounds and Multimedia Properties' window in the control panel. The name is also case
    sensitive.
