Low Bandwidth

Hi,
I have cisco 2950 24 port switch and Cisco pix 506E firewall. here are my network design
swtich -- port 2/3 Vlan 2(public Vlan)
rest of the port on Vlan 5(private Vlan)
Internet pipe(1 mbps brustable to 10MB) connected to port 2(public VLAN)
Pix outside connected to POrt 3(public Vlan)
pix Inside port 4 (Private Vlan)
Now I'm getting very low internet speed around 80K/Sec download speed.
ISP people directly tested Internet pipe -- they got 5.5 MBPS download speed.
Can any body help me

Take the PIX out of the equation and test again to see if its the problem...

Does anyone know if it is possible to customize the UI in the low bandwidth version of Plumtree and can this be my users default? Or would it be possible to get certain sections of the portal such as the Document management and Forums to behave in the Standard Portal like they do in the Low Bandwidth version?

  • FF resolution settings to lower bandwidth usage

Which versions of FF will do this and what specific settings are there to lower bandwidth usage?
Also, will the FF settings override settings on websites such as youtube? For example, if my kids were to click on higher resolution or HD video settings for their youtube videos, what would happen?

Changing the resolution doesn't have any effect on the Firefox performance and may even look worse if you operate an LDC monitor not in its native resolution.
You can block content if you ant to improve performance on a low bandwidth connection.
You can look at Adblock Plus.

  • Live A/V Broadcast How to support both High & Low bandwidth users ?

    Hello there
I have been working on a requirement where I need to
broadcast live audio and video feeds
to Flash Media Server from where it gets broadcasted to our
customers. We have two types of
customers: High bandwidth and Low bandwidth.
Now could anyone please tell me what kind of scripting is
required at the server end so that
the Media server broadcasts to these two level of user groups
at same time. How do we control
the live feeds received at the Media server ? How do I
control the amount of bandwidth that at server
side based on the received feed so that I can broadcast to my
users based on their capacity ?
I tried running two separate flash application pulling the
feeds from SAME camera but that didn't
work as changing the settings (like Camera.setMode..) on one
program affects the settings on other
program(as both programs are connected to same camera/mic). I
do not want to buy two separate
cameras/mic to support both high/low bandwidth users. I would
    need to do it programatically.
Could anyone please let me know your thoughts, it would be
very helpful to me and others.
    Many thanks,
    -Sakthik

Thanks Charles for your reply. I didn't know that FMS doesn't
support this feature. So you mean to say that there aren't any
other ways to control live feeds at server side ?
I would try your suggestion on setting the bandwidth and FPS
at client side but I am not sure how effective will it be because
the Server is going to push a high bandwidh data to a 56 Kbps
pipeline. There will be lot of data loss due to this narrow
pipeline. Do you think that applying setBandwidth and setFPS on
this narrowed data is going to be effective ? I dont think so, what
    do you say ?
How exactly does this setBandwidth and setFPS works ? When
will it modify the data ? Will it modify the data after or before
receiving it at the client end ?
Please share your thoughts on this.
    Many thanks,
    -Sakthik

  • Low bandwidth anomalies at a university: 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T

+Please note that this question was originally posted in another thread. In the hope of resolving this issue as quickly as possible, I’ve reposted this question in this thread- to cast the largest net, so to speak.+
Over the past several weeks, colleagues and I have been attempting to resolve low bandwidth and throughput problems experienced by users at our university. The entirety of these instances are located in one building on campus. Working with one faculty member extensively, we initially saw problems including low download speeds, and in certain instances, exceedingly high upload speeds. At a first approximation, I concluded that this was the result of a duplex mismatch. Upon further investigation, and the inclusion of university IT personnel, we were informed that the problem was supposedly not related to a duplex mismatch, but rather a platform specific anomaly, specifically related to Macs and their supposed inability (or at the very least limited ability) to employ auto-negotiation protocols with any degree of success.
My colleagues and I dismissed this almost entirely as ignorance or prejudicial. Was this an error?
In order to test that hypothesis, we connected a PC to one of the drops in question; no substantial change in bandwidth was detected.
However, during one meeting, it was communicated to us that by switching from the extant 100BASE-TX connections to a Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) connection that any low bandwidth issues would be resolved. Having made the transition for two machines, we have been unable to verify that the expected improvement was made respective to the new standard. Under the 100BASE-TX connections, we observed a range of download rates as low as 10-20kb/s and as fast as 4-10 Mb/s. After the switch to Gigabit Ethernet, the maximum download rate we’ve seen has been 80Mb/s; the average rate is substantially lower, usually floating in a range of 10-18 Mb/s. In any event, these represent a staggeringly low fraction of the expected available bandwidth.
I’ve adjusted TCP buffer sizes (albeit with the Apple Broadband Tuner, not via the terminal), adjusted frame sizes (up to jumbo frames) and confirmed numerous times that the auto-negotiation protocols are indeed working client-side. On all the affected machines the speed (1000BASE-T) is set automatically, as are the duplex mode and MTU. Adjusting these settings manually seemingly has no effect.
The affected machines include two Mac Pro workstations (quad core 3GHz and a eight-core 2.8 GHz), a MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz, 15 inch) a dual processor G5 tower (liquid cooled 2.5 GHz model), a Dell PC (for testing purposes only- see above), and a 500 MHz G4. The problem persists in various drops in the building, seemingly randomly.
My suspicion is that the problem exists on the server-end; either a switch or router is configured incorrectly or perhaps a cabling problem exists? Unfortunately, the university’s IT personnel are not providing any answers. I’m wondering if I’ve overlooked something (basic or otherwise) that might be contributing to these problems?
    Thanks in advance!

    No.

What do you mean by "no change"? Does the PC run fast or slow like the Macs? If the PC runs slow, then you should be able to use that fact to get the network fixed.

First, you need to clarify a couple of things. Does a PC work correctly in this building? Does a Mac from the building work correctly in another building. You can try going to some random office store and buying the absolute cheapest 100BT hub and plugging that into the network and plug the Macs into the new hub. How is the speed?
The problem is almost certainly wiring problems or a flaky router or hub. Unfortunately, no IT department in the world will even give you the time of day if "Macs" are involved. You have to prove that there is a problem that does not involve the Macs. For that, you'll need a PC or a hub. This is the one job that Mac can't do.

  • Certain pages will not load correctly (Low bandwidth)

All of a sudden, some web pages in firefox will NOT load up correctly. They seem to be low bandwidth or mobile versions of the actual page. My home page, including ebay and a few others are starting to do that. It is only characters, without images or pictures, and everything seems enlarged on the webpage. Ebay has fixed itself however other pages remain like this. Google chrome displays them correctly. What is going on? (ive put ONE of the pages below)

Check the version of Pages that you have. Many users are finding problems with the iWork apps in Snow Leopard due to not having the latest updates as of the September 28 installed. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. I don't use Keynote, but it should also be updated. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work. You also should consider updating Snow Leopard to 10.6.1.
After applying all of the updates use Disk Utility to repair permission.

  • Low Bandwidth under Arch

    Hi,
I just got an 100Mbit internet connection.
    Running the test on:
    http://www.speedmeter.de/speedtest/
I get 11Mbit/s vor my Linux and 97 Mbit/s with my Windows (same Laptop).
So what did I do wrong? I searched the forum for hints, but couldn't find the correct one.
    what I did:
    - used with/without netcfg
    - used wpa_supplicant with nl80211 & wext (nl80211 gives me a higher bandwidth >100Mbit/s to the router. wext only the wireless-G 54Mbit. But thats not the problem)
    - switched between brcmsmac & broadcom-wl
    - installed pdnsd
    - removed IPv6 module from loading

Difficult to say... Some things to try (but without warranty). By the way I have a notebook with an internal wifi card connected to USB (but I do not say it is your case).
    1) Be sure that the problem is real: make several tests. Is it consistent.
    2) Do a iwlist scan and check that you are not on the same channel as another computer in the same building (that can make interference). Try to configure the wifi with a channel not close to the channel used by another computer.
    3) Make sure the problem is related to the wifi: connect the computer with a cable and remake the test.
    4) Connect a second computer to the same router via a cable (to not interfere with the Wifi) and test the speed between the two computers (give them static address within the same network, start sshd and transfer a big random file between the two computers).
    5) Try another distribution and see if the problem persists. If not retry in arch with the same kernel version of the other distribution.
    6) Disable any encryption (WEP WPA) and remake the test. What is the output of iwconfig?

  • Low bandwidth alert

We get hit with indirect link failures that we have to rely on Cacti to show. Sadly, it can take our NOC guys hours to detect. I'm thinking a TCL script that watches ifHCInOctets (.1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.6) and ifHCOutOctets (1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.10) and if either hits 0 to send an alert. Is this doable? Or is there a better way?

I assume you mean if either of those OIDs do not increment for a specific period of time?  If so, then yes.  You can do this with an EEM applet:
    event manager applet monitor-bandwidth
    event tag e1 snmp oid 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.6.1 get-type exact entry-op eq entry-val 0 entry-type increment poll-interval 60
    event tag e2 snmp oid 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.10.1 get-type exact entry-op eq entry-val 0 entry-type increment poll-interval 60
    trigger
correlate event e1 or event e2
action 1.0 syslog msg "Input or output octets was zero for the past 60 seconds for GigabitEthernet0/0"
This applet assumes GigabitEthernet0/0 has an ifIndex of 1.

  • Why do I get such low bandwidth using buffered encoder reads?

I have a PXI system with 10 6115 A/D boards and a 6608 timing board. I can do a simultaneous buffered AI at 5 MHz across all 40 channels of the 6115's.
However, I can only do a single buffered encoder read at about 100 kHz.
Why such a huge difference in bandwidth?

I think the difference in bandwidth here is really due to size of the FIFO's present on each device. The 6115 has either a 16 or 32 Mega-Sample FIFO for analog input. If one of the 6115's isn't granted usage of the bus for a "large" amount of time, it can absorb this by backlogging the data into its FIFO until it is granted the bus, at which time the DMA controller will move the data to host memory before the FIFO overflows. The same is not true of the counters on the 6608. Each counter on the 6608 has an effective FIFO size of 2 Samples. This means at high sampling rates, the 6608 cannot withstand "large" amounts of time without being granted usage of the bus. How fast you can go before the counter FIFO overflows is going to be system dependent, but 200 KHz is in line with results I have observed. If you need to go faster, you can use two counter measurement methods, but you will sacrifice accuracy for speed. For example, by dividing down your input signal by 4, you will be able to go 4 times as fast, but your accuracy will also decrease by a factor of 4. You'll have to weigh the requirements of your application to determine if this type of trade off is acceptable.

  • Java Socket on low bandwidths

    Hello!
I am currently working on a project where we try to use Java technology (through Jini) over an HF radio link. That means we're working with bandwidths down to 75 b/s. And we are experiencing what we suspect is a timeout when we try to make a new Socket.
What happends is we get a 'NoRouteToHostException: connection timed out', and it seems to us that this happends in the Socket constructor. That means we never get the chance to set the SO_TIMEOUT or other Socket parameters since the exception (seemingly) is thrown during Socket creation.
This is mainly a problem on the lowest bitrate (75 bits per second), but we have also experienced this with 150 b/s. Not on a regular basis, though.
We are about to write this off as being caused by some timeout in the Socket constructor which we have no chance to modify, but we would welcome any information that can help us understand this.

75 b/sSo you get an effective rate of 9 bytes per second.
    That sounds like fun.
Presume the IP packet size is 128 bytes And there is also a host lookup then it takes a minium of 4 packets. Which means 56 seconds to connect. And that is with no processing time. And no lost packets.
Are you using a host name or just an IP? If the host name I believe you can do a lookup on that first and then use the IP. That would make a timeout less likely.

  • Low bandwidth and slow download speeds

On a normal day, our router (a BT HomeHub 1.5) reports about 1700 kbps downstream bandwidth, and downloads at around 100-180 kBps from most websites.  On Saturday, after it reset itself several times repeatedly, the downstream bandwidth dropped to about 400kbps, and download speeds dropped to 20-30 kBps.  I did the usual of resetting the router (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on), with no effect.
After about an hour of these speeds with no change, I gave the BT hotline a call.  We did the usual checks (plugged into the master socket, all phones in the house passing through filters, line attenuator/accelerator attached to the master socket) and then she did a line test and couldn't find any faults.  I have since also done a quiet line test (17070, option 2) and couldn't hear any significant static.
I was advised to leave the router on for 24 hours without resetting it so the line could be reprofiled.  The router managed to reset itself overnight for Sunday morning, but has now been on for over a day, with no change in connection quality.  We've done reprofiling once or twice before, and generally it fixes itself in a few hours.
Today, I ran btspeedtester and checked the ADSL Line Details page of the router.  You can see the results at the bottom.
So, is there anything I'm missing on checking (I find it highly unlikely that 'leaving it alone' for 3/5/10 days is going to do anything other than waste my time; see almost every other speed problem topic in the last few weeks to notice that there is a trend of problems not fixing themselves if you just wait ), or should I go ahead and send in a customer support request for the mods here?

  • Best practice for low bandwidth end-users

    Hey guys,
I'm new to CS and am about halfway through my planning stages for a web app.
My end users will be predominantly on 256k-512k connections (yeh I know it sucks, but this is regional/rural Australia) and a fairly large proportion of those are going to be on satellite which is incredibly latent.
Does anyone have some tips on keeping it lean and mean regarding coding or have any experience's they'd mind sharing?
    Cheers

At JavaOne, I attended a great technical session on extreme web caching. He talked about ways to make sure the browsers cache the static information, such as images.
Web Caching is very important for high traffic, high performance web site but few people know all the professional-level strategies. In this talk I'll share some of the tricks of the trade, including advanced tips from Yahoo's Mike Radwin.

  • Low bandwidth with E3000 router

    Hello.
I just purchased an E3000 router to replace my old d-link. We have Telia ADSL (8 Mbit) and I've had little or no problems using a router before. When my computer connects directly to the modem I get 7 Mbit out of the connection but with the E3000 I'm down to 5 kbit. Most sites won't even load. I've tried hard resets (30/30/30) on both router and modem but with no improvements. I have no problems getting an IP address from Telia with the router although I do get assigned a different IP than when connected directly to the modem.
The WAN light on the router constantly blinks/flashes rapidly even when the computer attached to the router is offline which makes me wonder what kind of activity there is. As said, I have no problems connecting directly to the modem and I've tried different cables as well but with no luck.
Anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong?

Did some tests with and without router:
Pingtest.net without router: 0% packet loss, 15 ms ping, 0 ms jitter.
Pingtest.net with router: 0% packet loss, 15 ms ping, 1 ms jitter.
    Speedtest.net without router: ping 9 ms, download speed 6.98 Mbit/s, upload speed 0.82 Mbit/s
    Speedtest.net with router: ping 9 ms, download speed 0.15 Mbit/s, upload speed 0.79 Mbit/s (test 1)
    Speedtest.net with router: ping 9 ms, download speed 0.03 Mbit/s, upload speed 0.82 Mbit/s (test 2)

  • Low Bandwidth to my PS3-What Can I do

I recently upgraded my fios connection to 35/35 and my laptop is working in that speed range.  I ran a an ethernet cable from my FIOS router to my PS3.  The run is about 40ft and the Cat5 cable tested clean.  However when testing my link speed on my PS3 I am getting 12/1.  What can I do?  Is there a setting in the router that I can configure?
I appreciate any help that can be provided.

Although 12/1 is not anywhere near the speeds that your internet are capable of. It should still be more than adequate for a PS3. Gaming really doenst need much over 1Mbps down. Many people play the PS3 on DSL with speeds less than 1Mbps down and dont have any issues. So 12 is more than enough for gaming.
Now if your using it to stream videos like netflix, while more is better, 12 is still fine for that. You only need 3 Mbps down to stream a HD movie.
And most of the games and updates that you download to the PS3 are limited on the other side to 5Mbps. Most cannot send it to you any faster than that. Now it may affect some downloads, but even at 12 down, those downloads really are not going to take that long. At least most of them anyway.
So for all intents and purposes, 12/1, while not what your internet is capable of, should not affect your PS3 experience. At least as long as you are a typical PS3 user.

the most i have seen is about 4000 kb/s , i have a 20mb virgin connection and checking at the ethernet wired pc that can achieve 2mb/s , someone help please -- paul

    Try few settings ,
On the set up page of router under set up look for MTU its under "disabled" by default ,make it "manual"
change the size from 1500 to either 1400 or 1300.
Also check the firmware under the status tab & try upgrading the it by downloading the latest firmware from www.linksys.com/download.
Also connect the computer directly to modem & try testing the connection speed .
