Low detect on existing wifi for my iphone4

Sometimes low and sometimes totally cannot detect on existing wifi of the area while my wife iphone 3g's can detect it clearly, why?, tq

  • My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi

    Following a question solved on March 24 by LaPastenague, but gone bad again.
    Apple AirPort Time Capsule
    I felt the need for a physical backup of my data, as I would not completely trust the different clouds. I use, and have used Dropbox for 4-5 years and are very satisfied with that, but I am still not sure if or when a political lunatic will shut off the internet.
    I purchased the Apple AP Time Capsule 2T, because all my other stuff are Apple, and that it's wireless. My old backup is Maxtor 300 GB.
    Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
    The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
    Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
    I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
    So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
    I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

    Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
    When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
    Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
    A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
    7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
    35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.

    The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
    The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
    Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
    Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
    Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
    Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
    Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
    TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
    No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
    Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.

  • How to set up TimeCapsule (4th) to create own private (wired) network behind Airport Express (5th) that is set up to join existing wifi-network of fritz adsl modem/router?

    I work in an office building with free Wifi to connect to the Internet. I want to be able to use this internetconnection, but at the same time I want to shield of my own wired network.
    I've made the following configuration:
    - fritz adsl modem / router
    - Airport Extreme (5th gen) set up to join existing wireless network (green light, works)
    - Lan-cable from lan-port AE to wan-port TC (4th gen)
    - Lan-cable from TC to Mac
    - Lan-cable from TC to Printer
    When I set my TC (network-settings) in bridge-mode everything works fine, but my Mac and Printer get an IP-address from the fritz modem / router and are visible to others.
    I tried to set TC in NAT/DHCP-mode, but then I get the error message that I should set a static IP-adress for TC. When I set TC in DHCP-mode, it looses connection to the AE. I'm not sure what to do now. Does anyone know how to set up my TC and create my own private network and still be able to get on the internet?

    You are using free internet.. so there is a price to pay.. that is convenience and non-ideal network setup.
    The better alternative is to pay for your own connection. Then you are completely free of the possibility of others in the bullding seeing your connection. (as long as you secure the wireless).
    But I think you are probably over worrying about public wifi.. if it is setup right.. ask the building admins.. it should be setup so each user cannot see another users connection. This is typical for most wifi setup and simply means you can see internet connection but nobody else on the connection. ie other wireless users.
    Having a router with NAT makes it then more secure again and allows clients on your own network to interact with each other. But you can setup wireless to the free wifi for every client.. (depending on how many IP you are allowed).. and run a secondary network without internet access. This is easy for desktop etc where you have a wireless and a wired connection but less convenient for mobile devices.. unless you use a cloud connection and each client can link and share via that.
    Have I made the explanation worse??
    Think of it this way.. if you had 3 laptops.. all 3 could connect to the internet from the building wifi.. but they cannot talk to each other or share resources in local office. You can put resources out in the cloud, that can be shared.. but that adds traffic and most free services are not fast.
    Now you can also plug all three into Time Capsule by ethernet.. and share local resources. Files, printers backup etc. This network is not connected to the internet at all. Each laptop has internet via free wifi and local connection.
    For devices like iphones that have no ethernet or other method.. you could use local wireless and public wireless.. but in turns.. still the only advantage is less issues with double NAT.. if that causes problems.. then this is an alternative.

  • Weird problem w/AX as client on existing WiFi ...

    So, I recently moved to a studio attached to a house that has a wireless network and have no problems seeing the network and getting on it to get online and such. I also have an AirportExpress which I used for a wireless network at my previous home and was connected via ethernet to the DSL modem. This is a basic set up. I was able to listen to music on my stereo through AirTunes, print, browse the internet, blah, blah, blah.
    Now, I know my equipment is capable of becoming a client of an existing wireless network (COX cable highspeed) using the AirportExpress because I read it in the help topics. I did everything I'm supposed to and it works partially. The problem is after setting up the AX once I can no longer make any edits by selecting the "Configure" button because I get "error reading configration file ..." messages. I can get online but can't connect via Airport Admin Utility or iTunes. iTunes lists the speaker name but has the same problem hanging when trying to connect to the AX. The only thing I was able to do is just hard reset or factory reset the AX and set it up again but every time I did I got the same problem.
    Please help.

    So, I went ahead and messed with the Airport Express. It was sitting unplugged for about a month since the last attempt to getting it to work as a client of an existing WiFi network. You wouldn't believe it! Or maybe you would. It works now.
    Here's the series of events: I plugged in the AX (my Mac was on and connected to the existing default "linksys" wifi), it started up and Mac saw the network. I opened Airport Admin, switched Airport to be connected to the AX and in Airport Admin I edited the settings for it to be a client of existing network (wasn't able to use encryption because both methods were'nt supported by the router). Left Mac alone and ate dinner, came back to Mac and saw that Airport was now connected to "linksys" but in Airport Admin it showed the AX, therefore, Airport was connecting to "linksys" via AX.
    After many attempts prior, I never had that much success. Good sign. I thought maybe it was just getting online but AirTunes wouldn't work. Opened iTunes and had success with the Radio. Eureka!
    All I have to say is, huh? But … it works now. That's all I care about.

  • Using airport time capsule to create an internet connected network from pre existing wifi network

    i bought an airport time capsule for college. I bought it to create a network for my dorm room so that I could take the pre existing wifi from the school and make my own mini network that I can hook my other stuff up to. Problem is that I don't have an ethernet hook up in my room so the network would have to be created from a wifi network rather that a ethernet hook up. Is this still possible? Alternate suggestions? I am afraid of either the college network blocking users from communication with other devices via the wifi, or the fact that my printer would be on a huge network for all to screw with.

    NO, it won't work. Apple only works with apple.

    I am sure your college has rules about not running your own wifi networks.. but anyway.. that is up to you.. the Apple TC cannot turn off 2.4ghz which would be handy.. so the only way to do this following the rules is ethernet. You can run a full network standalone on ethernet. And still use wireless for internet.
    If you want to use wireless standalone this is also possible but you need to connect a second wifi USB dongle your Mac so you can have two networks at once.. You can use an express to connect to the college wireless and bridge that to the TC by ethernet.. then use the TC to create your own network.. since you cannot turn off 2.4ghz I guess how long the College IT people take to track you down should be hours. If you could just use 5ghz it would probably be ok.

    Wifi dropped one day and all devises lost connection but when the wifi was fixed the MBA wouldn't detect it anymore even though all other devises did
    MBA still works on all other wifi networks
    How can I get my MBA to detect the home wifi again / why won't they link anymore?
    My home wifi (Sky is the provider) dropped one day because the lines went down but after it was fixed the macbook air (2012) stopped detecting it..
    The macbook will detect any other wifi network (office, public, friends houses etc) and works perfectly but will not even pick up the home wifi.
    This is particularly confusing because all other devises including iphones, laptops, tablets etc will detect my home wifi without a problem.
    The only time it has connected to the home wifi since dropping is when my laptop picked up my neighbour's wifi (which is rare where i live as houses are far apart) and then my home wifi showed up and worked perfectly until i closed the MBA and it wouldnt pick it up again
    I have been without internet in my house for c. 6 weeks now even though the laptop appears to work ok on other networks and the home wifi works perfectly with other devices
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Go to System Preferences > Network. Select Wi-Fi or AirPort from the left column. Click the Advanced... button.
    Under the Preferred Networks list, select every Wi-Fi network that appears, including the one(s) you want to use, and delete every one using the "–" (minus) button. Select the box "Remember networks this computer has joined" if it is not already selected.
    OK then Apply.
    Select your wireless network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu and provide your wireless network password. Be sure the network you select is yours and not someone else's.

    I bought a Air Port Express device from Apple yesterday.  We decided to set the Air port device in a room near the router to use as a wifi extender to areas of the house where the signal is weak.  In our discussion with Josh, the Apple Rep.  he explained how it can either be connector to the router or use in another room relying on the existing wifi signal to extend it further into the house.  We have verizon DSL.  Our town is very small...no cable provided so we are lucky to have what we have...some areas of our town can't even get what we have.  We, didn't want to connect it directly to the Verizon device (router)....we followed the directions from Josh as well as the explicit directions provided by Apple support...it didn't work. We keep getting an error message.  Does anyone have any advice ?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Please speak in "Laymen's terms"  I am not technically savy....but..am determined to get this set up.  Thanks to anyone, in advance!

    In our discussion with Josh, the Apple Rep.  he explained how it can either be connector to the router or use in another room relying on the existing wifi signal to extend it further into the house.
    Unfortunately, it appears that Josh was not aware that the AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless signal from another Apple router.
    From Apple's literature:
    Extend an existing Wi-Fi network’s range.
    If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection. Launch the easy-to-use AirPort Utility app on your iOS device or Mac, and you’re mere minutes away from long-range Wi-Fi enjoyment.
    The AirPort Express is not compatible with a Verizon product for this purpose.
    Your might want to have another conversation with Josh to ask his advice on how best to proceed at this point.
    If you do decide to keep the AirPort Express, it will be necessary to connect it to your Verizon router using a wired Ethernet cable connection if you want the Express to provide more wireless signal coverage.

    Yes, if the AirPort Expess will connect to the Belkin router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
    No, if you want the AirPort Express to connect to the Belkin router using wireless.
    If you want to extend using wireless, then use another Belkin product, which will be compatible with your Belkin router.

    The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
    If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
    So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
    Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
    You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
    And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
    If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
    If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
    If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
    You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.

    I want to extend its range, could I connect a Airport Express wirelessly to extend its range (as my house does not have ethernet lines built in)?

    Apple's "extend" setting is a proprietary feature that is designed to only work with other Apple routers. So, it would be extremely unlikely that it would work with your modem/router from Belkin.....or any other manufacturer, for that matter.
    Your best bet for compatibilty is to always use wireless routers and extenders from the same manufacturer on your network. Check with Belkin to see if they have what you need.

    Hi Bob,
    My router is near the entrance door as it needs to be plugged in the telephone master socket there.
    Initially, I placed a short ethernet cable between the router and the TC which was placed right next to the router. I set up the TC to create a seperate wifi network. The signal strength in the rooms furthest away was similarly weak/insufficient in the two wifi's.
    Now, I plan to place a second unit half way. Unfortunately, due to local circumstances, this will need to be slightly nearer to the entrance hall than to the rooms furthest away. Hence the question which unit (Airport express or extreme base station) will provide the strongest signal?
    In the new configuration I would plan to no longer use my old router; instead I would use the TC and a new unit...
    Should I leave the TC near the entrance or place the TC in the middle of the house...

    Tried severla times to add APTC 3 TB (newest release) into existing wifi network using either iPhone or MacBook Air AirPort Utility. It does not work, as I receive an error message "An unexpected error occured. Try again"

    It is difficult if you try and do setups Apple does not support.
    Connecting to existing wifi network is not supported. You can do it but it is the worst possible setup and definitely to be avoided.
    Is it not possible for you to connect to ethernet on a modem or router?

    If you run into trouble .. take some screenshots and post them.
    Be fully aware of what you are doing.. you are taking an expensive unit.. and making it a dumb client.. you lose all advantages of the new Gen5 TC.. you may as well have got a cheap Gen4 from the refurbished store.
    No wireless AP and no ethernet ports.. and slow slow wireless double hop backups on whatever your existing wifi is.
