Low headphone output volume
Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me with this issue. I got my Z30 several months ago now and have been really enjoying it. Love the device, love the OS, definitely sticking with BlackBerry for the forseeable future. However I've had one particular problem ever since I got the phone, and it's that the headphone output volume is just too low compared to my past devices. Even when set to maximum volume it's just not enough to power my headphones, whilst I can listen to them without issue with my iPhone 4, Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Note 2. After looking around online I've seen people mention that in the "Main Volume" settings screen there's supposed to be an option to boost headphone volume. However, this does not appear at all on my device. OS version is 10.3.1.2582. Device was purchased, and is used in, the UK. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can solve this issue, or is this just an inherent limitation that I'm stuck with?
Settings - Main Volume - Adjust media volume and the volume of your applications - is the slider set to maximum ?.Also turn on 'Always Adjust Media Volume'.

Totally new to this. Audio problems with device and output volume.
Hi, I just purchased Logic Express and Im having trouble with the levels. Im going through an Alesis USB mixer. The problem is, right when I press the record button on a track I start getting a very high hiss and an over distorted sound with my guitar. I played around with the levels a bit and it seems that when I go to the computers audio setting and lower the output volume it goes away. I dont understand why output would effect what Im recording. I don't want to have to lower the outpt volume because then I wont be able to hear the track i just recorded when Im recording on another. If anyone knows what is actually going on and how to solve this problem, any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Could this be a "through-feedback" kind of problem? I don't get any kind of distortion or hiss running through my Edirol M100-FX USB mixer.
Depending on how the Alesis is configured, you might be feeding the same signal from the mixer to the computer, getting that signal back from the computer, and then sending it on to the computer again. This is particularly likely since you report that the problem goes away when you lower the output volume from the computer.
You might look for a 'mixdown' switch on your mixer.

'Music' displays but won't play. Settings appear correct and iPhone (3G) is selected for output. Startup screen intermittently displays with the lower pause/play volume bar for no clear reason..... developed at the same time as play failure. Ideas????

Appearane of 'Music' functions (I>> > II <<I, plus volume slider) on the lock/log in screen (when first turning on the iPhone) thus far seems without pattern, i.e. regardless of which if any applications are up in the background, and indeed even when all have been quit.
All visual aspects of 'Music' appear normal after launch including the title scroll across the top in vertical mode. However, while pressing play (>) converts the play (>) icon to pause (II), selected song does not play and the elapsed time bar (upper end between the track count and the repeat/shuffle icons) remains stationary at 0:00 or at any point to which it is dragged. When using home sharing this same problem persists regardless of what output is selected.

IMac 27 - very poor quality audio when using analogue headphone output
Hi,
I've had my iMac 27 (i7 quad core, early 2010, OS X 10.6.4), hooked up to my hi-fi via the headphone output jack (analogue) since i bought the machine a few months ago, and its worked fine. However, the audio quality has suddenly deteriorated. The volume is very low, meaning that I can only hear anything if I turn up my hi-fi volume all the way, and then the sound is distorted (as you'd probably expect). Turning up the volume on say, iTunes, whist playing a track, combined with turning up the iMac's output volume does cause an increase in overall volume, but it only makes the difference between totally inaudible and very quiet! Its as if there is some internal output- level setting within the iMac that has 'stuck' at a very low setting!
Troubleshooting actions carried out so far:
Removing the audio cable from the iMac's headphone socket allows the Imac to play via its own internal speakers, and this works fine! (The sound is good, volume is decent, no distortion). So, its just the headphone audio that is affected!
I've verified the sound settings in system preferences. They look fine.
I've performed several soft and hard reboots (with up to 24-hours separating power-off/power-on cycles), but to no avail.
I've booted into Windows XP (bootcamp) and the same audio problem persists (so its not the O/S that's causing the issue).
I've checked the cable and my hi-fi by removing the 3.5mm terminating plug from the imac and sticking into my mp3 player's headphone jack. All works fine. I then inserted the 3.5mm plug plug into my laptop's headphone jack. Again, perfect sound reproduction through my hi-fi. I then returned the plug to the imac's headphone socket and the audio problem re-surfaced, so its definitely the imac that is at fault.
I've ran the extended hardware tests too - no faults found.
I reckon its a hardware fault, but just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same problems?
Incidentally, my Imac is well within its 12-month warranty, but the complimentary 90-day Applecare cover has expired. Looks as if I'm going to have to make an appointment with a 'Genius', but I didn't want to go through the hassle of transporting the system unless necessary. Thankfully, I've had none of the other widely reported quality issues, and apart from this audio problem the machine has performed flawlessly.
Kind regards.I have 30 new imacs running Snow Leopard. They replace 30 emacs that were running panther. I have 30 headsets (labtech) that worked beautifully with my emacs. Used them so my kids could create imovie projects using imovie 6. Well all that has changed with my new imacs. I went to use imovie 9 today and what a disaster. NONE of the headsets would work as they had on the emacs. The kids had to wiggle the plugs and that would sometimes create sound out of one channel, no channels, or would create a crackling sound. Worse than that is that it would give the kids the spinning beach ball. They would unplug the headsets and after about 1 minute imovie would return to normal. I took some of the headsets and tried them out on an emac I have in the room and they all work. I tried them on my macbook pro and they all work. So, it is not wiring or a plug. The sound prefs are setup correctly. Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Here I have new imacs which will allow more sophisticated projects with the iLife apps, but can't use them due to inoperable headsets. I have tried three different brands of headsets and 2 of them will not work at all. These were brand new imacs - right out of the box, and brand new headsets. This is very frustrating to me and the students.
Any help would be appreciated. How can apple not design a fully functioning headphone jack as they have in the past? -

Ok, I think I didn't spell out what to do in enough detail. The problem is that this stupid Apple forum scrunches up messages so data that should be on a single line gets split into two or more lines! Awful.
Anyway, here's what to do:
First, start Applications/Utilities/Terminal
Now highlight the following line, use cmd-C to copy and cmd-V to paste it into the terminal window. It should be a single line:
cd /Library/Preferences/Audio
Now press return - you shouldn't get any error messages
Now copy and paste the following line and press return, again it should all be on ONE line:
sudo mv com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist DeviceSettings.xxx
It will also ask for your password, type it in.
I don't expect you to get any error messages, but if you get an error message saying com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist not found that's ok. If you get ANY OTHER error message, cut it out of the Terminal window and report it back to me.
Finally, cut and paste the following line:
sudo mv com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist SystemSettings.xxx
Once again the same rules about error messages apply.
What these commands are doing is renaming two Apple preference files so that the system no longer recognises them. You can double check they've worked ok by pointer a Finder window at the folder Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/Audio
Now shutdown and restart the computer.

I have a 15" PB 1.67 (Feb 2005), and a 3G iPod, and I am looking for a high end set of headphones for use with both as well as a home stereo system.
My question is this... Can the PowerBook and the 3G iPod successfully power a pair of headphones with 250 Ohms of impedance? I realize I could add an amp, but I would prefer not to.

Don't know exactly what's going on with your external speaker set. I assume your external speakers/subwoofer are a powered set, yes??
Even though the PowerBook output is lower than your "slackerbox" when the external speaker volume control is set the same, can you make it up by turning up the external volume? Or even when turned all the way up (or until it sounds distorted) the PB is still lower than the slackerbox?
Remember on your Mac PowerBook, there are 2 volume controls that affect your iTunes playback volume through your headphone jack:
1) iTunes Volume itself: the little volume slider control on the top of the iTunes application window.
2) PowerBook system volume. This is adjusted by the little speaker icon on the top right of your Mac menu bar.
If either one of these controls are turned down, the headphone output will also be down.
This is not scientific but my general rule of thumb is to set the volume control of your source (PowerBook & iTunes in this case) at about 75% volume level when connecting to another amplifier (as you are with the external speakers.)
You want the volume to be as high as possible without causing distortion from overloading the front end of the external amplifier.

I'm having trouble getting enough volume in headphones while recording. I have the output volume on my interface (M-Audio Fasttrack pro) all the way up, but when I adjust the mix on the interface to hear a good mix of both recorded tracks, and what is being recorded, the volume is too low to hear anything. The outputs on Logic are set as high as possible without clipping. I've even tried a separate headphone amp and its not enough. Its not like I'm hard of hearing, either... :. any suggestions?

You need a dedicated mixing console to blend the incoming overdubs with Logic's playback.
What model? What price? You decide this.

got a 21.5 iMac late 2009 and noticed a huge difference in volume:
-from headphone output sound at minimum is almost harmful and definitely too loud at mid position( I'm using same cheap headset as before )
-from built-in iMac speakers volume looks normal (louder than with my g4 iMac, but never too loud).
Tried with sound prefs but the difference remains.
Is this normal ? I mean, in the new iMac the headphone output is (too) much better or there is a way to fix at the same level the two outputs ? or do I simply have a very Low volume from iMac speakers?(using headphones is now really fatiguing)Mac OS X and the iMac are keeping two separate sound output volume settings. So the volume setting for the built-in speakers is saved separately from the volume setting for the headphones.
Just connect the headphones and set the volume as desired. Then, disconnect the headphones and set the volume of the built-in speakers as desired. When you connect the headphones, the volume will go back to whatever it was set at before, when you had the headphones connected. When you disconnect the headphones, the volume setting will go back to the previous setting for built-in speakers.
If the above does not work as I described, try resetting PRAM

Headphone output stopped working (snd-hda, Dell XPS 13)
Update: I got it working! See my second post; I will leave this here as a reference for those with the same problem.
My headphone output stopped working, and my integrated microphone also stopped working. The speakers work fine, though.
AFAIK, I didn't do anything, and am quite baffled as to why this is. It's worked fine for half a year.
I have a Dell XPS 13; it came installed with Ubuntu, I booted that, where it *does* work (just to eliminate hardware problems).
I'm running 3.16.4-1; I also downgraded to 3.16.3, which didn't help.
I'm testing with speaker-test and mplayer -ao alsa; I normally use PulseAudio, but eliminating that for testing seemed like a sane thing to do. It doesn't work either way.
I also downloaded the hda_analyzer, that has a lot of options, but I'm not sure what most of them mean...
The closest I've been able to get at the problem is this:

This is required to get this to work in the first place, and always has worked; I tried some other options, to no avail. the enable=0,1 is to disable the HDMI output (disabling this has no effect either).

I have no idea how I ended up in this "broken" situation, or even what this option does, or how to use it without gnome-alsa-mixer (I had to install 15 packages to get this, as I normally don't use gnome)... Sound on Linux still seems no better than when I started using it 15 years ago :-( (I spent about 5 hours on this...) -
Why is the headphones output jack so loud?
The output from the headphone jack on the left of my MacBook Pro 15" (base model, latest as of 16/07/11) is incredibly loud. Even when my Mac has the volume on one 'bar' or 'block' when using the volume buttons, it's still extremely loud and almost deafening. I fear how loud it must be over two blocks, because I simply can't listen to it.
Is there any change the min/max volumes that are possible? This MacBook Pro is only 2 days old.blakei21 wrote:

Hmmm. Agreed, very weird. There have been many and varied issues with MBP audio out ports. I would try another set of headphones, if possible, and if same issue there, contact Apple. 90 days free phone support, 1 year hardware warranty, 14 day return/exchange period. -

When using my Sennheiser in-ear headphones the volume control on the lanyard does not alter the volume on my iTouch 64Gb - why?

Open System Preferences > Sound and select the Output tab. Now plug in your external speakers or headphones, do you see the Device Name change from Internal Speakers to Headphones?
*If nothing:*
Then try another Account, preferably your Admin. Account if your logged into another.
*Still nothing:*
Check the settings in other third party Audio programs you may have installed?
*If still nothing:*
Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
+(as per the instructions at the bottom of the article)+
and
Zap the Pram > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
*Then if you still get nothing:*
Take it in for service and have it checked for a hardware problem.

I recently re-installed OS 10.6.8 (from the retail Snow Leopard Install DVD, followed by the 10.6.8 Combo Updater) to my 2006 iMac (version 6.1) 24". Ever since, whenever I re-boot, the output volume of the internal speakers is set to a reduced level. When I bring it up to the level I like - that's fine, but only for as long as the session. If I re-boot, the level is once again dropped down to the reduced level.
I've reset the output level using the keyboard keys, and also in the System Preferences - nothing seems to stick. I've even plugged in a pair of headphones and set the output volume to be the same as my preferred speaker level, but still, nothing sticks.
I can't find a preference file to delete that is specifically for Sound Preferences. I've used Cocktail to search for a corrupted preference file, but that finds nothing as well.
How can I regain control of my volume setting so that it will survive a re-boot?I should have added that resetting the P-Ram didn't help, neither did an SMC Reset.

OUTPUT volume resets to high after reboot
I turn the OUTPUT volume down then shut the computer off but when I boot it up the OUTPUT volume is hi again. I have reset pram, repaired permissions and still the same.
Must be a pref bad somewhere.
There are no stuck keys on the keyboardIt may be a bug, but it obviously does not affect everyone. It does not happen on my older Intel iMac. And there is a +Early 2009+ Mac mini in the house, 2.0 GHz (same as and in Dah•veed's profile); it does not happen on it either.
When you did the test of setting volume low (or muted) with external speakers disconnected, and restarting with the external speakers disconnected, was the startup sound from the built-in speakers low (or muted), or was it already reset and loud. This will better determine when the volume reset takes place. If it's already loud, then it takes place during the previous logoff and actions that take place before restarting (or shutting down), or during the initial few seconds of startup (before the startup sound). If it's still low (or muted), then the sound volume reset takes place at some point after the startup sound, but before startup completes.
As another test, if you set the volume low, then log out and log back in (instead of restarting), does the volume stay low or does it get reset to the higher volume.
And as one more test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane

Log out and log in to the new account. Go to System Preferences Accounts pane and set it for +Automatic login+ (If you don't use automatic login normally, then you don't need to set it). Now try doing the same test, except from this account instead of your normal account. Is there any difference in the volume setting being retained?
