Low Noise Margin, Regular Drop Outs of Broadband?

I have noticed recently that my HH2 type B router is showing at various times a disconnect yellow LED.    This was not causing a major problem, but on reflection I think it has been happening since before Christmas.   I decided to check on the HH2 ADSL Connections and Event Log pages and keep copies of the text from 24 Feb.   Although I usually switch the HH off with the computer, I have refrained from doing so for the last week or two in case that was a possible cause.   The Event Log shows short connection times.
I appear to have a small noise margin varying between 2.5 and 3.4 dB with the download speed of ca 18.0+ Mbps.    I have carried out a Quiet Line test on our corded phone and the line is perfectly quiet to the ear.   There have been no house wiring changes.
Looking now at the Event Log it appears that the broadband disconnects in most cases are very regular every 30 mins - most odd?   Even between 01:00 and 06:00 hrs in the morning on 25 Feb my log shows 30 min drop out interval!
Have BT made some kind of alteration to the Crowthorne exchange to cause the NM to sit below the normal level and for regular resets - seems unlikely?
Back in Dec. 2012 in my thread "Re: Failure to Reset the Line to Original Rate following Cable Replacement" I was getting 15,876 kbps with a Noise margin of 6.0dB.  I still have the ferrite ring on the HH PSU cable.   It seems my line is being "squeezed" and giving me 18+ Mbps with drop outs.
Should I request a Mod to reset my NM perhaps to a more reasonable value?

Thank you both for the replies.    I had wondered 'imjolly' if there could be a reason which you appear to confirm.   I have looked at the notes in the link 'John46'.   I have not noticed any problems with the HH2 or its PSU plug; the wireless link works well and my wife can now print to the HP Deskjet from her laptop.   Three of the Ethernet LAN sockets are now in use on the HH2 for a network.   One has the print server for the DeskJet and the main and standby Win 7 and Win XP machines occupy the other two.
Perhaps this home network might have some impact on the HH performance, but this should not really be so when the disconnects have also occurred in the early morning with everything switched-off, bar the router.
I shall continue to watch the behaviour and if it becomes too annoying perhaps a higher NM would be requested.    Games, videos and TV are not watched when such such interrupts could be unacceptable.

  • High noise margin, low speed and repeated drop out...

Hi - I have a Home Hub 3 which is always dropping the connection.  Unfortunately it gets re-booted alot as this seems to be the only way to get things moving again.  I have just ordered a new router/modem to ss if that will hold the connection better but have been reading these forums and see that the Line Status and Speedtest are a good place to start.  My Line Status shows a noise margin of 17.7dB - could this be my problem?

Ha - many thanks the quick reply but I am un-masked already as not having a clue what I am talking about! A few hours spent reading up on things before I posted was not enough! I am plugged in to the test socket - have just done the quiet line test on 17070 from a corded phone and there is no noise. A bit of history - 18 months ago we had issues with water damage to underground lines to the house and we are now on the last usable pair (?) at that time I had all extension wiring reoved and new Master socket fitted. We have been OK but not spectacular since - we struggle to have 3 computers running off the net at times and I dont beieve we are getting anywhere close to our expected speed and then recently we have experienced drop outs and really slow speed as mentioned in original post.

  • Broadband regularly dropping out

I am losing the will to live !!! BT technical support in India is apalling (and please do not misinterpret this, I have nothing against India or Indian people). They seem to work to a set script, which is repeated at every level of support, and if you don't fit into the scenario, difficult to get the problem solved :-(
For 2 or 3 weeks now, my broadband has been dropping out regularly. After numerous phone calls, an Outreach engineer checked the line from the pole to the exchange and everything looked good. He then came into the house and checked from the main socket back to the exchange, and again everything looked good, though the fault is intermittent so would test good most of the time.
The lastest advice was to remove the faceplate from the main socket, and plug my Homehub directly into the test socket behind the faceplate thus "eliminating any problems from extension cabling within the house".....there is no extension cabling within the house, and there is nothing connected to the faceplate, but they keep insisting the problem could be there. All wass fine with not a single dropout experienced when connected to the test socket as far as I know.
I was then asked to replace the faceplate and plug the hub back into that....................and in the last 24 hours i have had at least 3 dropouts, one within an hour of reconnection whilst watching BT Sport, then a couple of times this morning.
I hardly think this is a coincidence, and would therefore assume there is a problem with the main socket faceplate, but BT technical support does not see it this way, and prefers me to remove it again and plug back into the trest socket, and monitor some more................
Has anyone else seen anything similar ? Does anyone have a phone number to a technical group here in UK I can speak to and get this resolved once and for all ?
When is BT management going to listen to customers and realize that the waiting time on the telephone is far too long, and so frustrating on how much long the wait will be, or what position in the queue you are.

sounds like a faulty faceplate - either buy a new one or just connect to test socket and as no extensions just leave off the bottom half of the master socket

  • Regular drop outs and slow speed, likely to be noi...

    Hello,
I'm hoping this works, I've had some success on other forums.
When I signed up, I was quoted a speed of 11mb, for info, I'm near the centre of Worcester city, so hardly the middle of nowhere, but I'm aware I'm open to exchange usage and attenuation.
I can currently download at around a max speed of 230kb/s, way below what I would expect from 11mb. I noticed that the phone line was very noisy when I moved in, so I am tempted to blame that. I've done all the checks and had everything connected to the master socket (it's a rented property, so I'm nervous about pulling out fixtures and what-not) but to no avail. I called the helpline and after going through the script but was told there was no problem on the line, unfortunately.
In the last week, I've begun to experience regular connection drops, several times in an evening.
    Here are some router stats:
    Downstream: 1,180 Kbps
    Upstream: 664 Kbps
    ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI: 0/38
    Type: PPPoA
    Modulation: G.992.3 Annex A
    Latency type: Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up): 4.4 dB / 2.7 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up): 44.5 dB / 24.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up): 0.0 dBm / 10.6 dBm
    FEC Events (Down/Up): 131879 / 1358784
    CRC Events (Down/Up): 156 / 457
I had a similar issue with TalkTalk which ended up with a call out, I'm hoping this isn't needed here. Is it possible for the forum staff to look into the situation?
    Many thanks,
    Alex

Blimey you're fast on here, thanks for that. I'm nowhere near an expert on this, but I do know what I need to know.
I'm just trying this in case I've forgotten something daft.
I used the master for about a day but gave up after no improvement. The silent test is far from that, more crackles and pops than the eponymous cereal, that's why I'm suspecting that over proximity of electrical equipment etc.
Bit more info. I'm in a block of flats, and because I've had a corded phone directly in the master and still got a noisy line, is that more likely to be outside of the property rather than in? I'm trying to avoid the cost of a call out and I'm sure the landlord doesn't want his walls taken apart.
    Anyway, lovely stats:

Bit shabby for an 11mb line no?

  • Noise Margin massive drops

    Hi all,
My Noise margin on the below stats has been pretty much solid at 7.0 upload and 6.6 download, today I have the following I also notice the maximum upload and download rate has dropped. I have had this in for months now so not a new connection etc.
Data rate for download always sits around 55mbit witch is great and my upload always syncs at 19999 although today its showing maximum data rate at 18414 no idea why I havent changed anything my end, anyone have any idea what could make this happen ?
    Thank you

  • Satellite Pro A200 PSAE4E - WLan speed regularly drops out

    Hi
Does anyone know what causes my laptop to lose wifi on a regular basis? It is a Satellite Pro A200 PSAE4E running on XP. I purchased the laptop new back in February and it came with Vista loaded but the wifi kept dropping out and was advise to swap to XP as it was more stable.
When the wifi drops, the Wirless Connection Icon disappears completely from the sys tray as though it never existed although the wifi light just under the front edge remains on. Looking in the network connection in the control panel the wifi is not listed.
I have to shut down the laptop and reboot so that I can carry on working online.
I've downloaded the latest driver for the Atheros AR5007EG and I rang Toshiba support.
Anyone got any ideas - I'm disappointed with the performance of the WLan.

Ive got the same model, and had the same issue with the Wireless Card today (otherwise its been fine for 4 months). I was confused by the card not appearing in the device manager - like it was totally wiped from the system. I rebooted a few times and it did still not appear.
Left the laptop and did something else for a while, and on rebooting the card reappeared and the Wireless connection was remade.
I also have the same question: What causes all trace of a device to disappear - rather than the card to be shown but with an exclaimation mark showing there was some sort of conflict which might help us to sort the cause of the problem.
Have you had any help from anywhere else?

  • Magic Mouse Regular Drop Out

My mouse is dropping off bluetooth regularly.
I've timed it to a 13 second dropout then on for 60 seconds, repeated ad-nauseaum.
It is NOT loose batteries and I have just cleaned the contacts, it drops out when it's not being touched.
    *** is going on?

I purchased a magic mouse in January 2015 and it worked fine until I replaced the batteries and then it began dropping out.
The mouse was shipped with Duracell batteries and I replaced them with Eveready Super Heavy Duty batteries. My problem with dropping out began almost immediately. The shortcoming with the magic mouse is that the either the spring tension on the battery contacts isn't strong enough or their length of travel is limited so movement or jarring of the mouse can cause drop out.
The issue is that an AA battery isn't an AA battery isn't an AA battery. I measured a Duracell AA battery as having a length of 50.65mm and the Eveready battery that I replaced it with having a length of 49.65mm, one whole millimetre shorter. On reverting back to using Duracell batteries my dropout problem has disappeared. Simple!

  • 9411 - low noise margin?

    Hello,
I'm using an NI-9411 in a 9171 chassis, measuring a 5V differential signal @ < 100Hz but my frequency measurement jumps around a lot when I touch the bnc connector on the device I'm measuring (hand-held tachometer).
I was surprized to read that the input threshold for the 9411 is only 300mV.  I think I'm introducing noise because the tachometer isn't pulling the signal are enough below 300mV in it's off state.
I don't have many options for external signal conditioning in this application so I'm wondering if I'm issing something in the DAQmx settings.
For instance, it looks like I can't specify the input termination (single-ended vs. differential) or the input thresholds/max range etc...
    Any thoughts?

Are you saying you're showing more than 300mV when the tach should be low?  What measurement are you seeing?
I would suspect you could use the wiring chart to handle the single-ended.

  • Broadband noise/ drop out/ speed issues

Am starting a new post because last one has become too long. See http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/Broadband-dropping-out-noise-high-speed-slow/m... if you would like the history.
Here is the summary.  Long distance from the exchange.  Noisy line.  Speed low.  I have tried all the usual things many times.  Broadband engineers have been out x3 recently and confirmed that they can't detect any problems inside my house, or with the line coming into my house - although my hub typically shows a high noise margin.  Nevertheless, engineer swapped my line onto a new cable in the cabinet yesterday because he couldn't think of anything else to try.  He also replaced my HH3.  This morning noise had been reset very low, line speed coming into the house was high (for me), I was happily waiting for IP profile to drift upwards.  The readings from this morning are in the link above.  It was all looking good.
And then this is what happens (and I think it may be exactly what's happened before).  Come about 5pm, at time of busy traffic, the line (I think, I'm not a techie) with low noise margin decides it can't cope.  It drops out.  I have to reset hub to get back on the internet.  It comes back with higher noise and slower downstream line speed.
Any ideas out there?  Please try and avoid the standard usual stuff because I've done it all before.  Readings to follow.
    Solved!

Here is what my hub was showing around 5pm when internet dropped out.  Notice very low noise.  Me thinking my line can't cope with that, hence drop out.  Me predicting line will come back with higher noise and slower downstream line speed.  Process will repeat over the next week until noise margin is incredibly high, speed is very low (that's my prediction anyway).  Here's the reading from when the line dropped out.

    Hiya all,
the other day i posted regarding my infinity 2 connection about uploads speeds, that subject is now cleared and ive accepted it.
But someone was talkin about noise margin so ive been checking it regularly and because the women at tech support said to keep an eye on it over the next few days since she phoned me on wednesday.

    Hi there,
Your noise margin has dropped below the target of 6 for the downstream (If you were to reboot the router now it would sync at a lower rate to up the noise margin - or it might resync on it's own to try and stabilise the connection)

  • My noise margin was hard set, but it's not now.

Some of you will have seen me going on about low noise margins affecting download speeds recently, and that the way to fix it is to get BT to hard set the noise margin at 6dB to prevent the problem. I had to do this a while ago when I was first upgraded to 21CN, and it was fine for a while. Problem is it seems the issue has returned, so I guess it's no longer capped at 6dB any more. Just making this thread so that the moderators can try to deal with it directly, since it took 15 attempts to even get BT to do as I asked last time!

  • Wireless dropping out - a bit disgruntled with BT.

    Hi,
I had a problem with my BT Home Hub 2. The wireless connection regularly drops out to all the wire;ess devices in the house. (3 x laptops) and there is nothing that seems to be in common when it decides to fail and it doesn't come back online unless I restart the hub.
The BB connection to the exchange is okay and fast, our BT Vision Youview box has no issues and when the wireless drops I can still connect using a LAN ethernet cable. The hub is plugged into the main socket.
inSSIDer shows that the wireless signal disappears when it drops out
I have a spare non-BT wireless router and that works fine without dropping out but of course BT Vision does not work throgh that.
I have changed the filter. The hub is plugged directly into the main socket (I have no extensions) and I have tried different wireless channels. Our small bungalow is isolated and there are two other wireless signals just receivable from my house from an nearby school. One is on channel 1, the other on 11. I use channel 6. When the wireless is working we get a full strength signal throughout the property.
I contacted BT through chat regarding this issue and they first of all tried to sell me a wireless extender. I said not to bother because my contract is up soon and I'll just swap to either Sky or TalkTalk and I'll get a new hub. This was the reaction:
"Soumik Majumdar: I have gone ahead and replaced the hub  for you. You were using a hub 2. Now you will be receiving your brand new hub 3  within next 3-4 business working days. Please wait for the hub to reach you."
Yesterday I received a refurbished Hub 2 not the new Hub 3 they promised. And guess what, it doesn't work as well as the old one. I have had to restart it six times in the last day to get the wireless back, which is worse that the old hub.
I guess I'll just changed providers so I get a new hub.
    Thoughts anyone please?
    Thanks,
    Leinorackham

I believe the HH2 does have a known problem with the wireless becoming problematic through time. I know you have already done this but the best thing is to contact BT and ask them for another replacement and preferably a HH3.

  • Satellite L50Dt-A: WLan drops out or shows "limited" connection

My wireless internet connection is was fine until last week - now it regularly drops out or shows "limited" connection.
Other computers including an ipad and printer are on the same connection but are not experiencing the same problems as my new Toshiba
    Can anyone assist please?

    Hi
What windows system do you have?
Did you update the system probably from Win 8 to Win 8.1?
Did you try to update the Wlan driver?
    If not do that!
Mostly such symptoms could be solved by new WLan driver reinstallation or update.

  • Re: Broadband noise/ drop out/ speed issues

    Hi community.
I know this thread is old and probably closed but I would like to revive it.
I have exactly the same problem as MPR and any advice would be welcome.
I am a long way from the exchange, the line comes into my house overhead.  I reported intermittent line dropping weeks ago, spoke to several different people, all very polite, very caring, but not much use.
Several diagnosed fault on the line and said it would be fixed remotely.  One sent me a new home hub 2 to replace the one they diagnosed as faulty, though God knows how.
I kept saying that I suspected a physical fault with the line as a bundle of cables wired into a junction box (big black thing - looked like a toy from Anne Summers but never mind) was hanging down from one of the telegraph poles and the foil around the end where the wires went in lookd as if it was not fully weather-proof.
Eventually, last Friday, an engineer was sent round.  Checked inside the house, checked outside the house and said there was no problem with the line.  He detected noise which he suspected was causing the drop-out and said he would see if there was any water getting in anywhere which might cause this.
The hanging down thingy was secured better to the telegraph pole but I don't know if anything else was done.
Right away, same problem.  Intermittent orange flashing broadband light on the hub.  Occasionally no broadband light at all.  Usually needs to be re-set though sometimes comes back on its own.
If you have any advice I would be most appreciative.  This is costing me money as when my better half wanted to order something online, found a good price, put the details in and clicked "BUY", the line dropped.  By the time it came back up, the price had gone up £30.
Anyway, I'm calling them again tonight when I get home.  I would say "no more Mr Nice Guy" but that doesn't get you anywhere does it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear that your having problems with your BT Broadband.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
A summary of the checks are:
1a) Is your router/Homehub connected by a BT NTE5 master socket, Adsl Filtered Master Socket or Extension Socket?   Please bear in mind that extension cables and extension sockets can reduce the broadband's performance. If you have an Old LJU master socket then please say.
1b) Have you tried the Test Socket?
    2) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] If the other link doesn't work you can try http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
    3) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
    4) please post adsl line statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
    1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
    2) click Settings
    3) Click Advanced Settings
    4) Click Broadband
    5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
