Low/ not good sound quality importing an AIF

I have some professionally recorded AIF files- they sound great in quicktime- when I import them into imovie they sound much lower volume wise and almost slightly tinny. Is there something I need to do to correctly import them in? Or is this just a thing with imovie 6? Thanks for any help

And I just tried Garage Band- easy to use- but.. only does 44.1. This project has to be 48

  • Sound Quality from usb connector bad

serial connection/usb connection does not give good sound quality although connections through headphone jack is perfect.  How can this be fixed?

Am i understanding your problem correctly, it sounds (haha! No pun intended!) like the earphones are not able to handle the highs & lows of these songs and basically you're overloading them causing the crackling noise.
Are you using the earphones/buds that came with your iPod? If so, that could be why the song sounds good on your external speakers, but not through your earbuds.
    Hope that helps

  • [SOLVED] How to achieve the best sound quality with USB DAC?

I want to take full advantage of my hardware. However, I'm having trouble understanding what settings I need to configure. I've spent several hours reading through wikis and searching online. Ultimately, I'm trying to achieve the highest quality audio output in stereo that's possible with my setup. USB > Behringer UAC202 > RCA out > Audioengine A2
I've had this DAC working for a couple of weeks, but I noticed that MPD was still eating a lot of CPU cycles upsampling music from 44.1 to 48khz. As I looked into it, it seems that this is unavoidable with ALSA, so I need to use OSS. Is that true? There's some conflicting ideas about when it's necessary to use OSS. I'm not using any legacy applications or old hardware. The "Hardware mixing" section in the ALSA wiki is pretty sparse.
I want all sound to go through the DAC, so I disabled all of the sound options in the BIOS (HDAudio and HDMI audio). I shouldn't need those enabled, right? (What's strange is that ALSA no longer wants to load without them.) I've added the OSS daemon and it starts, but I still don't have any sound in KDE. It no longer offers the "USB Audio CODEC" option. I'm ok with no system sound for now, if I can get MPD working.
    /etc/mpd.conf contains:
    audio_output {
    type "oss"
    name "UCA202"
    device "/dev/oss/usb08bb2902-1/pcm0"
    format "44100:16:2" # optional
    mixer_device "/dev/mixer"
MPD is still starting as the root user. (I know, I should change that)
The daemon starts, but trying to play any track results in the following error in /var/log/mpd/mpd.log:
May 21 10:46 : output: "UCA202" [oss] failed to play: Write error on /dev/oss/usb08bb2902-1/pcm0: Input/output error
So... any help would be appreciated. Maybe, first of all, do I need to use OSS or should I switch back to alsa? Or maybe something else like jack?
    *******EDIT*******
ALSA was the correct choice. The simple solution was to create /etc/asound.conf containing:
    pcm.!default{
    type rate
    slave{
    pcm "plughw:0,0"
    rate 44100
Then change the audio output settings in mpd.conf to:
    audio_output {
    type "alsa"
    name "MPD ALSA"
    device "hw:0,0"
    mixer_control "PCM"
With these settings the DAC receives 44.1khz audio and no upmixing occurs. Only one application can make audio output at a time. MPD uses much less CPU.

For good sound quality, flat response is the most important thing. Take a look at qloud, http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34412, and find yourself a very good microphone.
Then you will probably want to set a global equalizer for your machine. You can try with alsa, http://krustev.net/w/articles/Global_eq … _for_ALSA/.
If ALSA isn't finegrained enough, jack has a lot more flexibility, except for the fact that it doesn't allow you to set default output device, so you will need a helper application to redirect all output connections to your equalizer.
Well, i would say this is quite subjective. Untouched signal is superior to any equalized sound in my opinion, but i know this debate is never satisfying

  • New ipod color lost clear sound quality

My new ipod which was a Christmas present lost its very good sound quality. It now plays everything "fuzzy" -- like with static. I have reset and restored (only once so far), but with no luck. The sound is still terrible. It is not the earphones, because I tested them on the computer. I have also had other people listen to make sure it just wasn't me.
Do I need to send it back to Apple for repair?

  • Nokia N95 sound quality and DAC

    [IMG]http://www.cnet.com.au/cnet/i/r/2006/mobilephones/22130769/sc003.jpg[/IMG]
    Hi
Ive been searching everywhere including Nokia for info and was pointed to this forum! ->
Does anyone know any specifics regarding the nokia N95's Sound Quality??
    Specifically:
    1. The DAC used in the N95 build?
    2. The SQ Differences between the N95 and N91 (build and technical)?
    3. The sort of amplification used in the N95?
    4. How the amplification (if any) runs through the 3.5mm jack?
    5. A comparison to the SQ of a staple player e.g IPOD?
    6. Is there a possibility for lineout? (purely a query)
Any help here would be most appreciated !!

Here is the official Nseries specs bout music:
    Music Features
    • Digital music player - supports MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA/M4A with playlists and equalizer.
    • Integrated handsfree speaker
    • OMA DRM 2.0 support for music
    • Stereo FM radio (87.5-108MHz /76-90MHz) with Visual Radio support
And I also learnt it has 8 band equalizer.N91 has a special music chip [forgotten who has made it] that was created to beat specially IPOD.Now IPOD has been redesigned but sound still sucks.
Already iREAVER, ZEN has beaten ipod.
I saw a tendency that whoever own this model barely [includin me] support this as best.
But its only upto nokia to keep it still best even after N95 released or not.
Instead can make another model over or as successor.
Plus, I donk think so mainly because y know HDD expansion is easier than SD MMC systems.
And play videos and songs better.
I am sorry that I could not give y a more depth technical feature.
But the fact is IT IS A MUSIC CHEAP ON WHICH LEADIN MUSIC COMPANIES GREATLY RELY ON.
And for nokia it is not impossible to make slightly inferior or superior to N91 Like sound machine and eventually all [music] phone will have this GOOD sound quality as standard....just a thought.
Hope y understand wat I mean.

  • No sound during import from camcorder

When I am importing video from a DV tape in a camcorder I don't hear any sound. After the clip is captured, you can hear the sound during playback. Is there a setting that allows you to hear the sound during import? I have tried importing HDV format from a camcorder and regular DV from a tape deck with the same results.

iMovie does not play sound on import. This makes sense if you consider that most current camcorders do not import in real time. They are faster or slower than real time depending on the speed of the Mac.
See if your camera has a speaker. You can listen from the camcorder.

    Go to Solution.

If you look on Amazon UK, these headsets are very similar in terms of both specs and price (£13-£15), and both have excellent reviews, so judging from that , I would say that they both have very good sound quality, so I don't think you will find any discernible difference between them.

  • No sound when importing video

I am importing video into iMovie using a Canon Elura 85. The DV port does not work on the camera, so I have a cable with 3 RCA plugs on the end that goes from the camera's AV port that connects to my Canopus. I plugged two of the RCA plugs into the Left and Right audio ports on the Canopus, and one RCA plug into the video port. I am able to see the video image show up in iMovie's import screen, but there is no sound. How can I solve this? Thanks.

iMovie does not play sound on import. Most cameras that iMovie supports do not import in real time, so sound is not meaningful. It could be useful for those with tape based cameras, but these cameras usually have a speaker so you can hear it on the camera.

  • Sound quality not as good as older iMac

At work I have a 2.4GHz Intel Duo Core 24" iMac. The sound is awesome. It gets quite loud and the bass is deep. My new LED display sounds like a tin can. It has such high treble and no bass even though this is a 2.1 system. I can tweak it using the equalizer in iTunes but when I am on the web, I am stuck with this poor sound quality. Could there be something wrong with the speakers or is did Apple make them worse?

    You are right actually....
there was one review somewhere (maybe engadget or ars technica?) that stated the sound was NOT as good as the iMac speakers.
I was looking for some kind of mod to upgrade the internal speakers , but have not found it !

  • Sound Quality not as good as ipod

I was hoping someone could help me with this. The sound quality coming directly from my powerbook to my JBL creatue speakers is crackly. I thought that it was just the speakers, however, when I plug my ipod directly to the speakers the sound quality is excellent. Is there a problem with the headphone jack that I plug the speakers into or is it somehow an iTunes issue? Any help would be great!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Try pluging your iPods headphones into the port. If there is something wrong with the port, you should hear the same crackly sound. I seriously doubt it's an issue with iTunes though, I use Sony external speakers and the audio quality is crystal clear.

  • Not the Average "sound quality" post

I import using Apple losless converter. I am aware of the general manufacturing specs that allow my speakers to sound like Rice Crispies, (which is generally lame.) This being said, I move forward to my point.
All of my low end frequencies distort, but NOT just through my speakers. It is extremely noticable even when using high grade head phones, so what's the deal here? I get the same distortion but to a lesser degree when I export to my Ipod nano, using high end head phones, which do not distort, on the nano as well. I have a 60 gb Ipod video which is formated for windows that has the same CD's imported at the same time (i.e. ruling out disc failure) which does not suffer sound degradation. Please help!

i've been looking for similar problem which i have...
i just updated Itune7.2 to Itune7.3 and all music files has been ****** up in my itune library....
then i installed 7.2 but still my music files are ******...
its sounds like can't handle bassline... which has nearly dying.. very quiet.
and high quality sound is a bit distorted. and try to play around 192kpbs-320kpbs... only bassline or low sound can't handle to catch up with high sounds.
but i found out that all happening was.. when i used my headphone sounds quality was ****. and i switched speaker (after i read this post ) it sounds all right ... and i put my headphone is back... its all sorted.
how weird! it might need a time to settle down for iTune7.2
or something problem with plug-in settings in mac.
*headphone - audiotech ATH-Pro6(its getting old but still works well )
    *speakers - logitechZ3( good work )
i think somehow something effected to on your itune library.
have you upgraded your iTune recently ? stay in 7.2 if you can.
and try to plug in/out with your headphone jack or speaker jack.
to let to know your mac.and restart as well.
there is some people has problem about iTune library after upgrade to 7.3
not complaine about sound quality but still something going on in iTune library.
i wanna listen to good quality sound with my lovely headphones.

  • Sound Quality Problem when importing

I am importing my CD collection to my IPOD Classic but a small number of CDs are importing with poor sound quality that sounds like interference.  Anybody know what then problem is and how to fix it?
The CDs are from the late 80s to early 2000s but age of the CD does not appear to be the problem.
    Thanks

How does the quality sound lower?
What is your sample frequency? (of the recorded files)
Have you set the recording bitdepth to 24?

You might try talking to the Apple store manager and see if you don't get more help...you might also contact Apple.com/support and see if they can give you a contact with the Apple Italy offices.
Sounds like you have two levels of failure, the first shop that did the repair and broke a wire, and the second that has disabled something else and isn't helping.
Apple officially refurbished equipment is usually good quality.  Surprising this has happened but you need to press on with complaints and try for resolution.
