Low processor usage

Can anyone explain why my Mac doesn't use upwards of 100% of the CPU when I am encoding from FCP? Just sits around 50%

As David notes, compressor can utilize multiple cores BUT, you do have to create a virtual cluster (multiple instances of the program running simultaneously) to take full advantage all 8 of them.

  • Premiere Elements 8 - Low Processor Usage

    Hello,
I am running Premiere Elements 8.  I have put together a video of HD footage, and am "burning" a DVD folder to my HDD.  During the "Encoding Media" process, it is only using MAX 50% of my processor.  I have a Core2Quad processor @ 2.33GHz with 4GB of RAM.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have a 640GB system drive, and a 1TB drive(on a PCI SATA card, that seems to run quite fast) that I use for my media.  I would really appreciate it using all of my CPU, as it takes a whole day to render 1 1/2 hours of HD video.  Is there any reason why this would be?   It seems to do it either with or without any other programs running.
    Any answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Austin
Screenshots of my Task Manager during HD video "Encoding Media" process:

When you launch PrE, and look at the Splash Screen, does it recognize the multi-core processor?
Also, much of Transcoding is I/O intensive, as files are written to, and read from the HDD's, so the processor could be waiting for that operation to take place.
Unfortunately, I have never seen a benchmarking program for PrE, as there is for PrPro, where one can test their entire system, and find where the exact bottlenecks are. That would be great, if only...
Good luck, and maybe others will have some tips, insight or maybe cures for the Transcode times.

  • Does installing Desktop Experience on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 slow down the server / increase processor usage?

    Hello.
I'm running a tekkit classic (Minecraft) Server on a dedicated server I got from OVH, Im just wondering - Im currently using ClamAV for an antivirus, But I would like windows defender.
Im wondering if installing Desktop Experience on my dedi would increase processor usage or slow down the dedi even slightly.
    System Specs:
    RAM: 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245v2
HDD: 2x2TB SATA (Both used, specified as different drives)
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Theres only 1 indev tekkit server currently running on there, Im getting 0-5% processor usage. I may be setting up more modpack servers  - but im wondering if installing desktop experience would increase the processor usage or slow the dedi down.
    Thanks.

  • FF resolution settings to lower bandwidth usage

Which versions of FF will do this and what specific settings are there to lower bandwidth usage?
Also, will the FF settings override settings on websites such as youtube? For example, if my kids were to click on higher resolution or HD video settings for their youtube videos, what would happen?

Changing the resolution doesn't have any effect on the Firefox performance and may even look worse if you operate an LDC monitor not in its native resolution.
You can block content if you ant to improve performance on a low bandwidth connection.

  • [HELP ]unexpected low memory usage

    Hi all,
Could someone help me out with unexpected low memory usage I am facing when I start the DB instance.
I am running Oracle 8.1.7.3.2 on Windows 2000 Adv Srv with
2GB of RAM and 3GB of swap area.
I only have 1 instance with memory related init parameters setted as below.
    shared_pool_size = 293510451
    large_pool_size = 104857600
    java_pool_size = 20971520
    db_block_buffers = 107289
    sort_area_size = 1048576
avg of about 150~250session so I was expecting the oracle
to allocate about 1.5GB of RAM when the instance startsup
Now, when I startup the instance, EXPECTING the oracle to
allocate about 1.5GB of RAM for himself, and check the
memory allocation status from the "task manager", it
shows that 1.4GB of physical memory is AVAILABLE. In another words, the whole system is only using 600MB of
    physical memory.
Could anyone tell why this is happening and the solution to solve this problem?
BTW, even if I give loads to oracle using the Mercury LoadRunner, the memory allocation status does not change much while oracle is barely processing each transactions.
    Thanks, in advance

I work mostly with UNIX but found the following from Metalink document# 46001.1 Oracle Database and the Windows NT memory architecture, Technical Bulletin. I think this answers your question:
On starting up an Oracle instance all global memory pages are reserved and committed (Total Shared Global Area, Buffer Cache and Redo Buffers). Only a small number of these memory pages are touched on startup and are thus not in Oracle's working set, as more pages are touched they will be brought into memory. Oracle must contend equally with other processes and will have its working set trimmed if other processes are faulting at a greater rate.
It is unlikely that this trimming will be desirable, especially when the database has a varying workload (high and low usage periods). Two registry parameters exist to allow the administrator to manipulate the working set bounds of the Oracle process, these are :
    - ORA_WORKINGSETMIN or ORA_%SID%_WORKINGSETMIN
: Minimum working set for the ORACLE.EXE process (units = MB)
    - ORA_WORKINGSETMAX or ORA_%SID%_WORKINGSETMAX
: Maximum working set for the ORACLE.EXE process (units = MB)
These parameters apply to all releases from 7.3.x and should be added to the Long postings are being truncated to ~1 kB at this time.

  • WLS 5.1 restriction of processor usage possible?

    Hi,
I want to run the WLS 5.1 on a WIN NT4 server together with a SYbase ASE database
    server.
The server machine has four processors and I want to define that WLS uses only
    two
wheras ASE uses the other two.
We already know that this is possible with ASE.
What about WLS? Can we define (how?) that WLS should use only two processors.
I know that this is possible at
runtime with WIN NT Server Taskmanager. But I do not want that somebody needs
    to adjust this
every time a WLS is restartet.
Or is this totally unnecessary, since WLS takes overall processor usage into account?
    Thanks for any help!
    Fleming

WLS doesn't count CPUs, just IP addresses. You should check your system
doc's to see if there's a way in NT to restrict execution to a set of
processors at start time. It's possible in Solaris. This may just be a
    limitation of NT.

  • Windows 98 Processor Usage

    Hello,
I have found that any LabVIEW program (I am developing in LV 7.0 on a WIn200 machine) I write has a very bizarre effect when it is run on a PII Win98 Machine. I'll take you through the sequence of events.
I'll restart the computer and then display the processor usage monitor. I'll then run a LabVIEW developed program. The Processor usage is now around 8%. I'll close out of the program. Now my processor usage jumps up to about 65% and stays there forever more. If I run anything else, the processor usage accumulates. However, if I run another LV exe, the usage percent will drop down to the typical 8% or so.
I believe I am closing my application out just fine. I even tried the "Close LV" vi and it had no different effect.
    Does
anyone have a possible reason for this or solution?
    Glen D.

Hm, this is strange behavior indeed! Have you tested this out on any other Win98 machines to verify that it is a Win98-related issue?
Also, are you communicating to any hardware in your executable (i.e, using NI-DAQ or VISA). In particular, if you are using VISA, there is a 'SyncVisa' environment setting for LabVIEW executables that needs to be set in the .ini file. Refer to this KB for more information: KB 1O3650DM: My LabVIEW 5.0.1 Executable Uses 100% of the Processor When Using VISA.
If you are making any Traditional DAQ calls, then a CPU usage of 100% is expected. Refer to the following KB for more information: KB 2ZK7NQB9: NI-DAQmx CPU Usage at 100%
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Low Processor Utilization

    Hi,
I am trying to write code that does a little bit of array manipulation and some simple trig to do something fairly time critical. I noticed that the processor utilization on my machine was awfully low, never really exceeding 50%. Perplexed, I tried to write some very simple code (an infinitely run while loop doing some simple math to the iteration counter) and ran that. Even with this simple code, the processor utilization did not improve. As stated before, I'm trying to write something fairly time critical, so the higher utilization, the better.
The computer I'm running this code on is admittedly not the top of the line - an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM. However, I'm fairly limited in my choice of hardware (note that memory utilization is no where close to pegged, either - with my code, and the simple loop).
Is there anything I can do to increase utilization? I've tried turning debugging off, with limited luck.
    Thank you.

Well, 50% is within a factor of two of the max you can possibly get and that's not bad. .
In terms of math, that atom of course sucks. While it is hyperthreaded, it only has a single core and a very small cache (the advantage is that it only uses 2W of power). Trying to maximize CPU usage if of course the wrong approach. You might be able ot speed the time critical computations up by a factor of 10 by using a better algorithm.
What is the exact OS version? Can you get it to 100% CPU if you run two parallel while loops without waits?
I agree with Lynn, show us some code....

  • Low Ram usage?

Hey all, so I've been keeping an eye on how much ram FCX has been using and it's... really low.
Is this normal? I assumed it would use a ton but it's barely using 2gb of ram any given time I check it in Activity Moniter.
I have 16gigs installed on my Mac Pro 1,1 for the record.
Is there something I am missing here?

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Beachballing and extreme GUI latency with low CPU usage

I generally only have two applications open.  iTunes 11 playing MP3s of about 128kbps, and latest Google Chrome with up to 4-5 tabs.  Usually I have gmail open, Facebook, and maybe 1-2 sites such as YouTube or Slashdot.  I don't have any servers running.
The CPU load is usually 90% idle.  The system load hovers around 1.5 for some reason.  Though at times it jumps up to 3.5 even though CPU remains at 90% idle.  I read a ton of Facebook pages.  After about 30-40 page loads, Chrome stops letting me scroll.  I can still click in the address bar, so I know the whole system isn't frozen.  I can change tasks via ALT-TAB, however, when I do that, it takes 10 seconds for it to switch to Terminal.  When Termianl is finally shown, it jumps to 90% CPU for a few seconds, and updates 5 times in a row, quickly, like a stuttering video, and then it is normal.  If I activate Expose by moving the mouse to the bottom left corner, it shows the Dock right away, but then it just sits there frozen for 15 seconds, and then it shows the windows and whatnot.  If I switch to the Finder and click on an icon, it doesn't do anything.  I then click on another icon.  Nothing.  I then try to draw a bounding square on the empty desktop.  Nothing.  Then after about 30 seconds of being frozen, the system does EVERYTHING I did in a quick hurry.  It selects the first icon, the second, draws a square, selects another icon.. etc.  It seems to be queueing all my actions but not responding to them immediately.  If I try to delete a file, the beachball shows up, and then after about 30 seconds it shows a progress bar, even for a tiny little text file, the progress bar takes 5 seconds, and then it removes it from the desktop.  If I press Mac-T to open a new tab in Chrome, I get a beachball and it takes up to a full minute before the new tab shows up!
While all of this is happening I've been monitoring my system with top, the CPU keeps at 90% idle!  And the load is usually below 2.0!  I have a Core 2 Duo 2.1 gHz MacBook 13" with 2GB of RAM, and there's about 25 GB free on the main disk.  There is also an external firewire drive connected.  Every 5 minutes the Mac OS wakes up the drive from sleep even though I'm not using it, and while the drive is starting up the whole system freezes for 5-10 seconds again!!
What the **** kinda joke of an operating system is this?!?!!?  I thought Macs were multitasking and everything!  I'm seriously concerned.... I"ve never had these problems in Windows, and never had these problems in Linux.  ***?!!!?!  I can't use more than 5 tabs in Chrome either.  It's way too slow.  And most videos on YouTube I can't watch unless I lower to 340p or 240p, otherwise they freeze and stuff.  Even though I have enough bandwdith..  The system can't handle the video.  It's so frustrating.  Oh and one more thing.  While scrolling through pages on Facebook, iTunes pauses at random points as if it can't handle the scrolling.... ***??!?!?!
    Please help me!!!

Hello? Does anyone from Adobe know why this is happening?
I understand why frames would be dropped if you set high
quality and your CPU can't encode in real time however the 30% cpu
usage I am getting while encoding isn't indicating to me I have a
    cpu issue.
Also as a note when I change the quality settings at no point
can I get my CPU to actually get busy enough where I think frames
    should be dropping.
Another side question. Is FME mult-threaded? We all know dual
cores are popular now. Also when I say 30% if its a single threaded
    app, that would mean 100% = 2 cores, 50% = 1 core, so 30% of of
that 100% would be all on one core if its a single threaded
    application.
This would mean perhaps the utilization is higher than
expected and frames are dropping perhaps.
    Any insight would be great.
    Thanks and take care.

  • High Temps low CPU usage.

I bought a  HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j063cl Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) last November and have been experiencing high temps and loud fans at very little CPU usage or strain. When I am streaming video often times I will hear the fan speed up every once and awhile and the TZ00 will be at about 60 degrees Celsius. I recently tested the system by playing Arma 3 on minimum graphics with shadows disabled and within  a minute of playtime the fan was blaring and the TZ00 was at just under 80 degrees Celsius. I did this test with the laptop elevated on a metal stand leaving the main exhaust completely clear and the majority of the bottom also clear. During the test the CPU usage was at about 20% maxing at 30% and I was getting about 35 FPS.

I might sound weird but sometimes CPU runs hot in a loop. If you check in Task manager, it peaks at 3.2 GHz and won't come down. This situation is because of bios problems and HP won't confirm this problems as it is their way. I solved by reducing the processor maximum power to 80% in power options. From then, CPU wont peak itself as there is a limit and won't stay in the loop. Hot air coming from left vent is solved.
But if the chasi is becoming hot while air from vents is less hot than metal chasi, then I think its CPU fan problem. I prefer you to clean the vents by disassembling the laptop though nearest HP service or local service guy. Just clean the CPU fan and coolant pipes running around the CPU and GPU. Im not an HP expert but I found these are the issues for over-heating. Remember 60 degree is considered normal temp for i7-4700 processor. But, if you feel its hotter then check it once. Don't hesitate.
