Low Res Photo's when outputting to iDVD

I'm using a last generation iMac G5 with the latest OS X updates.
When I create a slide show (No KB effects) to go in betwen video segments in my iMovie projects, The photo's all output looking Low Res and pixelated. All photo are a minimum of 1024 x 768 in iPhoto before adding to iMovie. I am using iMovie HD and was wondering if I am overlooking some settings. I believe I have all output settings to best quality.
This problem also happens when I make a solely slide show movie of images, and then inport into iDVD.
Is this an iDVD or iMovie issue.

Hi K
Yes this is a known problem. Main reason and origin (or most harmful) is:
- in iMovie using Share/Export to iDVD function and then OK the question
on rendering.
IF You done this I'm sorry to say that You most probably has to re do Your
SlideShow. Rendering also destroys the original iMovie movie.
HowTo ?
- Close iMovie when SlideShow is ready.
- Open iDVD and drop the movie icon (with a star on it) into the theme window.
Now iDVD will do the rendering and so much better.
Other origins is:
- kind of photo-files used. I use .jpg photos.
- strangely I think that low free space on the internal hard disk also affects
the end result (should be 25Gb free) if less than 10 or even worse < 5Gb all
kind of strange thing happens.

  • Any hope for my low-res photos?

My husband was a very bad boy. All of our honeymoon photos, and all of our new baby photos were taken at low res (640x480) and I can't get decent quality 4x6 prints. Are there any programs or easy ways to fix the resolution?

Sounds like your hubby was a "very good" boy. Gave you a honeymoon and then a child. This is our only job!
But he didn't read the manual (we don't ask for directions when we're lost, too) and recorded "digital" images that are too small to print.
The "software" to fix them costs more money than your new babies wardrobe and they take a level of skill to use. But it can be done. Ask NASA and the first Hubble images.
Copy and burn your low resolution images to CD. Call around (or online) to find a service that can help.
Obviously any "new" data added to the images will just be "guesses" by the software but many tools do exist to help improve them.

  • Iphoto saves edited photos to a low res image

Whenever I edit a image and save it, Iphoto displays a low res photo. How can I have Iphoto display a high res edited photo?

What type of editing did you perform on the file? And is the file a jpg or RAW? If it's a 5 MB RAW file then iPhoto creates a jpg modified version of it for display and further editing. Maybe that's why you're seeing the lower file size.
I have a couple of 7 MB RAW files that, when imported, created a 2.5 MB jpg right off the bat. It's the nature of the beast.
I just ran some editing tests on a jpg and I'm finding that a simple exposure change to a 2.7 MB file results in a 2.5 modified version. I'm also seeing an increase in file size, from 4.0 to 4.1, when applying several edits at one time, like increase exposure, adjust highlights and shadows and tweak the histogram. This surprised me as generally there's no way you can edit a jpg file and not encounter some additional jpeg compression. However, with iPhoto's nondestructive editing you only encounter a one time compression no matter now many times you edit the photo.
Unless you're producing mural size prints it will be difficult to see any degradation in the image.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Capturing low res HD 1080i

    Hey all,
I am trying to capture HD footaged at low res photo jpg. I am going through a black magic decklink.... I was hoping someone could help me with the exact settings I would need to make this work... I have deck control but am not pulling in any video thanks!

Not sure how the blackmagic will deal with downconverting 1080i to offline RT on the fly. The hardware (blackmagic) and video device (camera/deck) need to be set to the same video format for the incoming signal to be recognized. You can probably manually configure a capture setting to get the blackmagic to see incoming 1080i, and downconvert to offline RT, but an easier way might be to turn on the DV downconvert on your video device, and use a direct firewire connection to capture DV as offline RT, bypassing the blackmagic for now. Later, when you want to remove the unused media nd recapture, you can media manage your sequence all the way up to 1080i and use the blackmagic to recapture at that point.
Make sure your timecode/framerate/TCformat are all correct at each step of the process.
    Hope this helps-

  • All my library pics are low res!! HELP!

just as the title says! i think it began after i installed the 'fatbooth' app. can anyone help??

Is there a preference within the app which allows you to export lower res photos? It is not unusual for an app to offer this (and indeed set this as the default).
Photos taken from your camera should be native high resolution. Photos synched from your computer are down-sampled so they will appear lower-res than what you might remember seeing them on your computer.
Edit: Also make sure you've not zoomed in digitally - this is the main cause of photos looking low-res!

  • PSE 12 uploads to Adobe Showcase convert to poor quality low-res JPG's! Totally unacceptable output!!

I'm using PSE 11. Within the organizer, I uploaded some pics to Adobe Photoshop Showcase (which I did since Adobe abandoned their former well-working photoshop.com). Apparently, the PSD formats of my pics were converted to JPG's which is okay, I guess, if that's the way it has to be, but the resulting resolution was absolutely horrible! I worked a long time on my pics, and was extremely upset when I viewed them on Showcase with all the jagged edges and other impurities caused by low resolution. Is it possible to upload my pics without them being converted to low-res JPG format?? Or at least a high-res JPG?? I never had this problem with photoshop.com.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, as an experiment, I took one of my PSD files and converted it into a JPG on my computer, using a compression/quality setting of "maximum". As I viewed the JPG in Photoshop Elements, the output quality was excellent. So, next I uploaded the same JPG to Photoshop Showcase, which I did within the organizer. During the upload process, there was no option available for compression/quality setting. When I viewed the JPG file in Adobe Photoshop Showcase, the output was once again quite horrible, and it was obvious that Adobe automatically converts uploads to the very poorest JPG quality possible -- probably to save space on their website. I think that Adobe made an unfortunate move when they abandoned their previous photo-sharing site, photoshop.com.  Although I appreciate your input in this matter, I think I'll be looking elsewhere for a decent photo-sharing site (which won't include Adobe's costly "Revel").
    Thanks again,
    J

  • Photo quality low res in iMovie.  I can't fix it.

No Matter what the quality of my image (jpeg), after I import it (from iPhoto or any other way, for that matter) the photo is low res and I cannot get a crisp image in iMovie 6.0.1.
iMovie 5 did a fine job of reproducing my images. Now, I am at my wits end. I cannot get a project started with iMovie 6 because the images look so horrible.
    Is there something I'm missing?

You can use the "screenshot" method, which means just screenshot the picture when only the picture shows. Not any of the white spacing with edit and such on it. Then use the screenshotted picture as your background.

  • Everything is being marked "Low Res" when they're not

I have a bunch of photos and have used them as desktop pictures, sent them to fm, emailed them, etc. All was well. Then one day my iPhoto marked most all of my pics as f-1006 or low res. When I go into the System Folder to Desktop Appearance, and I click a pic, a question mark shows up in the screen preview window, and instead of the pic immediately going to my desktop, the standard Mac screen remains.
This was not always the case. Pics from my cell phone used to work great-no longer. Pics from dvd's used to work great-they were/are pictures! Pictures that used to import/export used as screensavers, and desktop images no longer work. Or they might work every once in a while???
Anyone have an idea what's going on with my iPhoto and how I might fix it?
    Thanks so much,
    Teri~

Is this the "i" you're seeing?
It shows in a book when the image resolution of the photo is below 180 dpi for the frame it's been placed in on the page. If that's the case what are the pixel dimensions of the photos that give this warning indicatior?
    Or is it this?
This shows on all photos if you put the cursor over the thumbnail. If you click on it the photo will flip up the location/description window for it.
Every photo has it. So which one are you seeing?

  • Press pdf's photos look low res

    Hey,
I wrote a press pdf of an Indesign file that incorporated photography. It looked great as usual. But I imported the same content for a resize and wrote a new press pdf and the photo part of the pdf looks very low resolution. I reimported the photos and tried again. But now I'm at a loss. Anyone help please?

After successfully writing(exporting) a press pdf of an ad created in Indesign. I copied the Indesign's file content to another Indesign file with a slightly different size. I wrote another press pdf of the new Indesign file and the photography (on the new pdf) looks horribly low res. But nothing about the photos changed except they're slightly (5%) smaller. No new settings in either program (Acrobat or Indesign) So I have one press pdf that looks brilliant and the other like a zerox copy. I can't figure out why. Never happened before. Type looks great, border rules look great. Everything but the photography.
I'll explore using the object inspector as you suggested. But I doubt it'll tell me why the photos look great in one pdf and not the other. When nothing should have changed.
Thanks for getting back to me.

  • ITunes syncing lower-res versions of photos from Aperture library VS iphoto?

Today I changed my iPad's photo syncing prefs so that it would sync photos from my Aperture library as opposed to iPhoto. To my dismay I've discovered that it appears to be syncing REALLY low-resolution versions of the images compared to what it was syncing in iPhoto. Most of my shots are 21MP, and I understand that when they are synced to an iOS device, they're resized/compressed, but when I was syncing from iPhoto, I was typically able to zoom in to 2x zoom and things would still look good, whereas now that I'm syncing with Aperture, the exact same images appear to have been synced at a lower resolution than the iPad's screen!
This is NOT an issue with offline images or missing masters either.
What gives? This seems to be incredibly backwards as I imagine the majority of Aperture users would want larger versions synced, and iPhoto users wouldn't care as much. How do I resolve this? Can I?

Aha. Well I guess that solves it -- I do have my preview settings super low-res.
That's a really strange/questionable design decision. This means I'm actually better off using iPhoto or manually syncing with folders (I have good reasons for using low-res previews).
    Thanks!

  • I burned photos to a cd and it included all the faces and low res duplicates

I burned photos to a cd from iphoto and it included the ind. faces and low res. images that iphoto created - I only want the originals.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • H.264 is outputting stretched and low res.

    Dear Compressor mavens,
Help me if you can. My issue is this, a month ago I used compressor to take an uncompressed 1280 by 720 HD QuickTime movie output from FCP and make it into a hinted webcast QuickTime at high resolution and it worked great. I used H.264 at 50% of source and it was a dream to watch on the web.
Now a month later I output the same project again, and using the same settings I attempt to make a similar compression. To my abject horror I found that the output was stretched width-wise to an obscene amount.
I checked the 50% of source settings and noticed that the frame size read: 853 by 360. At 100% it reads the proper aspect ration - 1280 by 720. When I choose "custom" settings on frame size and type in the proper aspect ration for 50% (640 by 360) it exports the correct aspect ration.
But to my complete horror there is a noticeable reduction in quality. The image is low res, pixilated around the edges of objects. Clearly not the same beautiful output I originally got from H.264. The really bizarre thing is that the image is the proper aspect ration without that lower res quality at 100% of source on the same setting.
I tried messing with the video settings, by changing the data rate to automatic, then back, then upping the restrictions, and raising the compressor quality to best. Zero change. Still that crappy pixilated image.
I tried switching the Pixel Aspect "Default for Size" to the proper 720 HD setting. To my elation I saw that now the 50% of source reflected the proper 640 by 360. But the quality still looks the same on the output.
I thought perhaps I exported from FCP wrong. But the uncompressed QuickTime is the right aspect ratio and plays great.
Any ideas? I really need to make a high quality hinted compression for the web.
    Save me, oh H.264 devotees...

For H.264 on web, I would recommend one of the frame sizes suggested by Robert Reinhardt at http://labs.influxis.com/?p=6
I believe this goes for every codec which makes use of 16 by 16 pixel macroblocks. If you choose a resolution which is not divisible by 16, 8 or 4, you might in addition to lower quality end up with a 1px green border at either the top, bottom, left or right side of your frame.
Have you tried using frame controls in Compressor? Have a look at this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7309534&#7309534
There is no need to change the pixel aspect ratio to something other than square. You want square pixels for content displayed on a square pixel display (unless you are making an Apple TV anamorphic file).

Having problems getting Blackberry Desktop for Mac installed. Had Missing Sync, but was causing duplicates. Trying to move to BDM.  Followed the directions, but MS did not uninstall completely.  Ran it several times.
Found also it was running DisplayLinkDriver.kext from the trash pile (on emptying trash, it would not erase, as it was being used).  Use external monitor with mac. Will try uninstalling BDM (again) emptying trash, and restarting with no external monitor.  Does seem like there is a bug here.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format
