Low res previews

After importing several directories of photos I notices some of my previews appear to be severely pixellated. These photos were only raw files, all my jpegs were fine. I finally found that the raw files with problems were in directories that also contained jpegs AND xmp files.
Directories with both raw and jpeg but no xmp files display ok.
Then I noticed in the metadata the file dimension was 160x120.
It looks like I am trying to view a thumbnail at full screen res.
Is there some special handling required for files with associated xmp files?

Bob, it seems like LR uses those jpg side car files as previews (one of the developers mentioned something like this). So, if those jpeg files only have 160x120 pixels you should try deleting them and see what happens in LR. (Make a backup first of course.)

  • PC content viewer shows only low res thumbnails of PDF folios (from folio builder)

Since i can't seem to find a similar question, here's my story:
I've recently held a small class of 2*18 students, running various versions of indesign (mostly Cs6 and CC) and various OS (MacOs, Win7, Win 8).
On the Win 7 and 8 systems, some of the students had a blurry/low res and no interactivity feature output of anything coming from Folio Builder.
Regular Interactive Overlay Folio preview always turned well, and preview on the devices were ok too (except for the long process of putting things online when the PC users would want to preview on an iPad).
But i couldn't work them out of the horrible low res preview when the folios were built in Folio Builder.
So far i haven't found time to narrow the failing machines (we didn't have a lot of time for this).
Is this problem known ? Is there a workaround ?

Hi bob, as i mentionned in the title, it's the PC (aka desktop) Content Viewer that's concerned.
I know it's supposed to be rasterized, but the problem here is their (desktop) Content Viewer really displays the thumbnails instead of the expected (and interactive) content.
I had never encountered this kind of behaviour before, and couldn't track that on the website.

  • ITunes syncing lower-res versions of photos from Aperture library VS iphoto?

Today I changed my iPad's photo syncing prefs so that it would sync photos from my Aperture library as opposed to iPhoto. To my dismay I've discovered that it appears to be syncing REALLY low-resolution versions of the images compared to what it was syncing in iPhoto. Most of my shots are 21MP, and I understand that when they are synced to an iOS device, they're resized/compressed, but when I was syncing from iPhoto, I was typically able to zoom in to 2x zoom and things would still look good, whereas now that I'm syncing with Aperture, the exact same images appear to have been synced at a lower resolution than the iPad's screen!
This is NOT an issue with offline images or missing masters either.
What gives? This seems to be incredibly backwards as I imagine the majority of Aperture users would want larger versions synced, and iPhoto users wouldn't care as much. How do I resolve this? Can I?

Aha. Well I guess that solves it -- I do have my preview settings super low-res.
That's a really strange/questionable design decision. This means I'm actually better off using iPhoto or manually syncing with folders (I have good reasons for using low-res previews).
    Thanks!

  • Replace low res footage with high res?

Can anyone tell me or is there a tutorial that shows how to take low res preview footage and replace it with the high res files for final output? In my case the high res file names have slightly different numbers. Is there a way to just change them to match the preview footage and be done? Doesn't seem to work for me. Tried relinking with no luck. I get: "Incompatible file. The original file and new file have no shared media range.Relinked files must have the same media type, same frame rate, and similar audio channels as the original files, and must be long enough to cover all the clips that reference the files." Seems like this shoould be a slam dunk!

I was using archival footage and only had low res previews to work with. Now that the project is approved I can buy the  actual footage and complete for output. Is this different from replacing watermaked low stock footage with unmarked high res? Should I have set up the time stamped low res as proxie? Please don't tell me I'm back to square one.....

  • Everything is being marked "Low Res" when they're not

I have a bunch of photos and have used them as desktop pictures, sent them to fm, emailed them, etc. All was well. Then one day my iPhoto marked most all of my pics as f-1006 or low res. When I go into the System Folder to Desktop Appearance, and I click a pic, a question mark shows up in the screen preview window, and instead of the pic immediately going to my desktop, the standard Mac screen remains.
This was not always the case. Pics from my cell phone used to work great-no longer. Pics from dvd's used to work great-they were/are pictures! Pictures that used to import/export used as screensavers, and desktop images no longer work. Or they might work every once in a while???
Anyone have an idea what's going on with my iPhoto and how I might fix it?
    Thanks so much,
    Teri~

Is this the "i" you're seeing?
It shows in a book when the image resolution of the photo is below 180 dpi for the frame it's been placed in on the page. If that's the case what are the pixel dimensions of the photos that give this warning indicatior?
    Or is it this?
This shows on all photos if you put the cursor over the thumbnail. If you click on it the photo will flip up the location/description window for it.
Every photo has it. So which one are you seeing?

  • LR 5 exporting low res files

    Hi
My LR5 is exporting low res files for some weird reason. I figure it has to do with the fact that I recently started using the smart preview  function. What made me almost 100% certain is has to do with this is the fact that I removed the hard drive that the files were linked to in LR, and then I was still able to export files. Now that in my mind shouldn't be as that file would be based on the smart preview created.
With all that said....any ideas on how to get around this?

The export feature is available when using smart previews. Sometimes users want to export images to post on the web or to give to clients for evaluation. You simply have to be aware of what you are doing.

  • After Effects CS4 - layer appears in low-res but disappears in full-res

    hi
Does anyone know what underlying circumstances might cause this to happen?
I have a composition with 12 layers, 3 of which appear fine in the preview screen up to half-res, but when I bump the project up to full-res they vanish. Likewise when I render the comp at web-video settings everything is fine but at full res I lose those layers.
    The layers are:
    1 - Camera
    2 - Adjustment layer
    3 - jpg 3d
    4 - jpg 3d
    5 - Adjustment layer
    6 - Pre-prepared composition 3d
    7 - Black solid
    8 - jpg 3d
    9 - jpg 3d
    10 - jpg 3d
    11 - White solid
    12 - Black solid
All the jpgs are different parts of the same very large image, masked. Layers 8, 9 & 10 are the ones that appear in low res but disappear in full res. If I move layer 3 down to below layer 7, that disappears (in full res) too.
All a bit odd! Any ideas?

when I say "bump up to full res" I mean either select "full" as opposed to "quarter" "third" or "half" at the bottom of the preview
window, or else doing the same from within the composition settings.
A colleague created the composition and I think the problem must have originated at his end as his PC is fairly slow. The jpg image was very large indeed (24000x6000) and he has now cropped it, and it works fine.
He sent me the updated project file, and sure enough it works fine on mine as well, despite the fact that he didn't send me the cropped jpg. So my laptop is still using  the same 24000x6000 jpg file, and now it's working!!

  • Work in low res?

Is it possible to work in a low res setting in livetype? It's soooo sloowwww.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes, go to edit menu--> project propertie. Select Quality-canvas: draft or wireframe. You can also select those setting for preview and movie render.
If the timing and moves are important in your sequence construction, use wireframe. The movements are almost in real time in the canvas..

  • High res preview in iondesign cs5

    Hi Guys,
quick question, for some reason when selecting a image in indesign CS5 and ctrl click display performance, high quality nothing happens?
What are the default settings in the prefs so when I am working the graphics are medium res until I specifically ask for high res preview?
High Quality is pushed all the way up but the preview still looks pixelated?
    lister

There are two possibilities here. Perhaps the image is really low res at the size you are using it (waht doe the info panels say for effective resolution?), or maybe you don't have Allow Object Level Display Settings turned on.

  • Converting a Low Res H.264 TO Mpeg-2 for Uploading

I have a two minute trailer for a documentary that the producer wants me to upload for "Independent Film Week" that needs to be in Mpeg-2 format. Previously, i have uploaded an low res "H.264" format. How do i convert the H.264 (quicktime?) to mpeg-2? I tried using Compressor, but the MPEG-2 setting was high res (6 gigs).
2nd question: if i convert a H.264 quicktime with Compressor, the file is "batch file". What did i do wrong?

I'm not really an experienced guy at this, but you might try experimenting with these suggestions and test your results:
I would try exporting directly from your original timeline instead of trying to convert your H.264 footage. Export to the MPEG2 setting, but double-click the setting in Compressor to open the setting in the Inspector. Click on the "Quality" tab, and lower your bit rate (you'll see it adjust the file size at the bottom).
Oh, and I'd set In & Out points in your FCP timeline before you export so that you can experiment with a few seconds to better see your results. Or you could just examine the quality in the Preview window of Compressor.
So you might try experimentation with that. Hopefully, that's helpful. Good luck!

  • How come my PPT to PDF files look so awful (low res)?

I have a powerpoint file that I need to save as a PDF. Originally, I had a lot of PNGs in the file because I need a transparent background, but each time I save the file as a PDF it looks horribly low-res (blurry, jagged edges-everything images should not be). All of my images are high quality and nothing is being scaled up. I have adjusted the settings in the PDF dialog box to be printer quality, and I've checked the "High Quality" setting checkbox.
Next I thought powerpoint preferred JPGs, so I saved all my images in that format, but I'm still having the same result.
Here's another plot-twist: saving the powerpoint file on a Mac gives me slightly better quality, but none of the hyperlinks work.
    What up?

It may be the PNG with transparency. This is a classic problem with AA, though I thought it had been fixed. Older versions could not handle transparency. With PPT, PDF Maker changes the borders I think. That improves the PDF result without having to change some of teh options in the printer yourself. The resolution looks good, unless your problem is that of some colors and lines being impossible to see because of the 1200 dpi. I use the default resolution of 300 dpi (the default is 1200). I had problems with 1 pixel vector graphics that would be washed out when done with the 1200 dpi.
If it is not the transparency, then there is a chance the problem has to do with this display resolution.

  • Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks in advance

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

  • Premiere Elements 9 - editing in low-res then rendering in HD

    Hi all,
Just started using Adobe Premiere Elements 9, editing together a 3 minute music video (so not an epic!). Half way throughand having all sorts of problems as the footage is running slowly or not running at all.
Just bought a brand new laptop with i5 core processor, 4 G RAM and 7,200 rpm, so don't think hardware is the problem.
    Question 1.
How can I edit in a low res version and then render in HD (is this called editing by proxy?)? A friend with Premiere Pro said there should be a very simple button that does this. It would seem a basic requirement of any video-editing software. But I can't find how to do it and the only internet search have brought up very confusing and long-winded processes.
    Question 2.
Having trouble rendering. I tried rendering as a WMV and the image was very pixilated even though it looks fine on the editing screen. File size was also huge and computer struggled to render it. Also tried FLV, which didn't work at all.
Would appreciate help as I've put hours into the editing process already.
    Many thanks,
    Christina

    >don't think hardware is the problem.
If you want to open and edit a single photoshop picture file... you are fine
For video (which is, in effect, 30 picture files per second, plus sound) you are not fine at all
Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708?tstart=0 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208?tstart=0 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433?tstart=0 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used this eSata Dock... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

  • Any hope for my low-res photos?

My husband was a very bad boy. All of our honeymoon photos, and all of our new baby photos were taken at low res (640x480) and I can't get decent quality 4x6 prints. Are there any programs or easy ways to fix the resolution?

Sounds like your hubby was a "very good" boy. Gave you a honeymoon and then a child. This is our only job!
But he didn't read the manual (we don't ask for directions when we're lost, too) and recorded "digital" images that are too small to print.
The "software" to fix them costs more money than your new babies wardrobe and they take a level of skill to use. But it can be done. Ask NASA and the first Hubble images.
Copy and burn your low resolution images to CD. Call around (or online) to find a service that can help.
Obviously any "new" data added to the images will just be "guesses" by the software but many tools do exist to help improve them.

  • Bug in photo library : all in low res (res of the viewer)

I have a strange bug, after having installed an app (Iris photo suite).
All my pics are now viewed in low res in the iphone (the res of the thumbnail !!). and impossible to delete the pics of the photo library.
I tried to shut of and restart the iphone, delete photos from the photo roll, sync, etc... nothing. I still have this thumbnail with low res. How to get rid of it ??
    thks

yes, deleted, and support contacted too.
By the way, the developper was very clever. It's the 1st time he's ever heard of a bug like that, and Iris doesn't touch to datas like Apple's thumbnails.
It might come from a use this very low batterie.
But after deleting, resetting, re-sync, etc... Nothing changed. Excepted that I have recovered my original images by using CopyTrans. The originals were present. (cool!).
So i copied the originals on the PC, deleted with CopyTrans from the iPhone, restarted, etc... and the low res thumbnails is still there !!!!
I think I like go to an Apple Store. no way out of that...
