Low resolution image comes in larger when imported into high res file?

In CS5, I have a postcard I'm designing at 355 PPI with a width of 2174 px and a height of 1553 px.
I dragged an image on top of the file straight from the desktop that is 72PPI with a width of 300 px and a height of 214 px, and it seems to display a lot larger than I anticipated, and it does not seem very soft or pixelated after import.
1. Why does it come in at a larger size?
2. If I use a Transform Tool to shrink it down, will it print nicely at a smaller size even though it was only 72 PPI?
Thanks.

In the Preferences under General, there is a check box that says...
Resize Image During Paste/Place.  What is it set to?

  • After OS X update moving 1:1 images results in low resolution and a long delay to snap into high res

After the OS X 10.8.5 update on my current generation 27' iMac moving 1:1 images results in very low resolution for those areas I am moving to with as long as a two second delay before the image snaps back into full resolution. Not only that but when it snaps back into full resolution you see a shift in alignment and a snapping into place with the nearby area that was already in full resolution. This is awful and is occuring with Lightroom 5 and 5.2. Has anyone experienced this?
My iMacs specs are the current generation 27" iMac, i7 3.4 Ghz, 32GB RAM, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB running OS X 10.8.5.
I did not have this issue with OS X 10.8.3.

I have noticed something similar on my Win7x64 system, but am not able to reliably reproduce it. It seems, for me at least, to be a combination of +Clarity and Lens Profile Correction which will always trigger an observable screen redraw when moving from segment to segment in 1:1 view mode. The variable is the delay.....most often it's a fleeting effect, but occasionally there's a more obvious delay in redrawing the image display. I suspect the more obvious delay is, in addition to the +Clarity and Lens Correction, some internal resource utilisation over a longer Lightroom session....certainly every time I've encountered it a Lightroom restart has cleared it up.
Don't know it that helps, or gives you any pointers to reducing the impact. Because of another "issue" with Lens Corrections (when it's applied, Spot Removal work gets slower), I tend to apply it last of all when editing pictures....so that also helps avoid this 1:1 screen redraw problem.

  • Dart 7 Image Network Support Broken When Imported into SCCM 2012

Hi guys, I've been trying to get Dart integrated into my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Task Sequences recently. Running SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3.
Until today I was able to PXE-boot DaRT7 and DaRT8 images, however the DaRT 7 images are now failing to boot - despite being recreated in
    exactly the same way.
I understand that when SCCM imports a boot image the winpeshl.ini is overwritten - originally the DaRT7 images have the following winpeshl.ini entries:
        [LaunchApps]
        %windir%\system32\netstart.exe,-prompt
        %SYSTEMDRIVE%\sources\recovery\recenv.exe
After import to SCCM this looks like:
        [LaunchApps]
        %SYSTEMDRIVE%\sms\bin\x64\TsBootShell.exe
I dont understand how the DaRT 7 images ever worked, as the first command from those that are stripped out (%windir%\system32\netstart.exe,-prompt) is what would initiate the TCP/IP stack.
Of course, no network = no TS shell, so thre client reboots. If I press F8, load a command shell and manually run %windir%\system32\netstart.exe and then run %windir%\system32\winpeshl.exe the TS shell loads.
Any ideas how I can fix this - essentially I just need the DaRT7 image to bring up the network automatically.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Preventing importing of low resolution images?

I'm in process of moving a bucketload of images into a Lightroom library from various sources in the drives of the Macs at gome, and am having problem with Lightroom importing a bunch of low resolution images into the library. These files include various web exports and iPhoto library thumbnails etc. Now, this wouldn't be a problem, except:
    1) I have no control over the "Don't import suspected duplicates" feature, so I don't know of Lightroom is importing a thumbnail version of a shot (with EXIF) or the original. I suspect is importing both, but can't be sure, and the import report is just too tedious to go through, as the total size of the import includes over 100k exposures.
    2) Lightroom doesn't have a feature that'd let me search for scaled down images. I can't search by resolution, and the scaling flag search doesn't pick up images scaled outside Lightroom. I could throw away some shots with no EXIF data but exports with EXIF information retained cannot be thrown away from the lib.
Anyone here have ideas on how to solve this? A solution that causes Lightroom to ignore files that aren't of the size that's the same as a the camera original, or one that lets me search for resized images from a library would both suffice.

If you are going to judge whether to import or not by file size alone, an easy solution would be to:
Use Windows Explorer (or Mac search) to search you Pictures folder (and subfolders) for files smaller than, say, 300 Kb.
Delete them or move to another folder.
Import the clean folder into Lightroom.
Heh, I guess you missed a detail in my post. I'm importing more than 100.000 exposures contained in a few thousands of folders. The total size of the library that's been imported right now is about 650 GB. If I can't automate this, I can't do it.
I shuffled through the Lightroom plugin API doc and seems I can't create a plugin that'd automate this either, as there's no call to initialize the value from the plugin itself - had an idea to provide a searchable width/height metadata plugin myself but apparently that's a no go.

  • Automatic upsampling of low-resolution images?

I posted about this, it might have been about a year ago now, and got no joy, so I thought I'd try again in case something new has appeared.
When exporting to PDF, InDesign CS can downsample images. Some of my images, however, maybe 20-30 at a guess, I need to upsample. In the next month or so I hope to export to PDF, and I dread the thought of having to go through the several hundred images in my book, find those images that are under-resolution, open them in PS, and do some calculations to work out the resolution to which they should be resampled to achieve 300 dpi in the InDesign document... whoa, I'm worn out just thinking about it.
Also on my wish list: I have a hundred or so images that cross the centre-spread boundary. Before I impose the document, I will have to go through it and Copy and Paste-in-Place each image, and then resize the boundary to the centre for both images so that when imposed, some of the image is on one page and some on the other (thanks Buko, for that hint from a few years ago). Not a great problem, but still... can this process be automated?
Bring joy to my heart, someone please, and tell me at least one of these chores is automatable.

ROBERT LEVINE: "Never saw that happen". You can see it happen, and I explain how to make it happen, in my downloadable zip file.
ROB DAY: Thanks for the feedback. The sample I generated (not a typical photo I work with; I choose it because it did not have any inherent imperfections) is an accurate reflection of how I use some of my images. i.e I start with a low resolution original and it is scaled in InDesign. I do not have the option of getting a better original. Most of the images I have are 2 x 3 Box Brownies from pre 1960, obtained by me driving from Tasmania to North Queensland (3000 km) each year for four years and scanning an elderly stranger's photos on their lounge room floor. In the two-three hours I was with them I had to get their life story, look at their photos, choose the interesting ones, write down the details, and then scan them. It's a challenge to do all that, day after day, 6-8 people a week, for three months at a time. Given 10-50 photos to scan, which at high resolution take three minutes each on my scanner, sometimes they couldn't all be scanned in high resolution in the time I had available. The most likely prospects for the book I did scan at high resolution, the others got the 300 or 600 dpi treatment (this is for a 2 inch wide image, remember). Three years later, when I started putting the book together, I choose to use some of the low scan originals, greatly enlarged, because they were important photos that I didn't realize at the time of scanning.
So, I'm stuck with some low-resolution scans and I want to make them look their best. Upscaling does that, doesn't it? And your example proves it.The choice between the middle and right photo is easy: the one on the right. i.e the upscaled unpixelated one. And I wasn't the judge: I let my partner decide (it's her niece in the photo). It's a game man who would argue with my partner.
Further, the image on the left, your reference and which is quite acceptable, is of course taken from my 300 dpi PDF -- itself an upscaled version of a 30 dpi image. So the reference you choose again proves that upscaling works. i.e it removes pixelation and is beneficial.
Please everyone - this is not about using a low resolution image because I'm too lazy to rescan the original. In most cases the originals are now scattered among children and grandchildren of the person I spoke with because they have passed away. Plus, if I did locate the photos, they are 3000 km away. I have some low resolution images and I want to improve them. Upscaling does that, InDesign can't, and I think it should.
MORE ON David's remarks: Excellent tutorial, David. Pity I wasted 20 minutes to unnecessarily generate mine.
I'd like to know the reasons why InDesign doesn't simply offer a 'Resample' option instead of only 'Downsample'. If a particular printer requires 300 dpi images for best quality, InDesign should accommodate that by allowing a user to resample every image to 300 dpi. I reckon the programers never gave thought to the idea that someone might be using low-resolution images in a flash piece of software.
This thread has gone a bit astray. Buko has given an indirect answer (to do what I thought I would have to do) -- use Photoshop. Can I take it that no version of InDesign, or any add on, allows for automatic upsampling?
InDesign has the ability to resample, and I bet it uses the same algorithms as Photoshop which can resample both ways. InDesign can resample downwards; it is unfortunate that it wasn't given the capability to resample upwards.

  • Downloads Low resolution images and not the high resolution as it did in 08

'm using iPhoto '09 , unfortunately iPhoto only downloads the low res images and not the high resolution images. This makes it pretty much worthless, since the low resolution images are really bad in iPhoto. There was not any problems with Iphoto in the past Thank You

What do you mean by "downloading"? There are a couple of ways to get image file out of iPhoto:
1 - select the thumbnails and drag them to the desktop. This will give you copies of the latest version of each photo.
2 - select the thumbnails, use the File->Export->File Export menu option. Depending on how you configure the export you will get the original, the latest version and/or a reduced size copy that you determine.
3 - select thumbnails and use the Share->Send to DVD. This produces a mini library of the photos you've selected which include the original files, thumbnail files and any modified/edited file. This method is intended for use on computers that are running iPhoto.
    Which method are you using?

  • RAW images are "locked"when imported into LR

I just got a new camera (Sony alpha 6000) and all my RAW images that I attempt to import into LR 4.4 are "locked" and therefore, cannot be imported.
When I click on the photo in my HD file and look at the "Get Info" the photo is not "locked".
Can't find any setting on my camera that shows the photo as "locked".  Anyone know if this is a LR problem or a Sony problem?
I have a Nikon D40 that has no problem uploading RAW images to my LR 4.4.
    Thanks for any help!!

Sony Alpha 6000 raw files require at least Lightroom 5.4.
You would need to upgrade Lightroom, or use the free Adobe DNG converter version 8.6 to convert your RAWs to DNG and then import those into Lightroom.

I have searched everywhere and I can't find with my terms what im looking for..I figure if nothing is coming up then im going about this

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

    Hi
Slicing images from a photoshop comp and then creating a web page from them is never a good idea, and will present many compatibility problems for you. A better alternative is to use css based layouts, this does not mean that you must forget what you have done in photoshop just that the procedure is probably slightly more complex for someone who has not used css layouts before,
A good place to start would be the css basics tutorial then the, using css starter pages tutorial from the tutorials shown on this page - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/css.html.
    (the 2 tutorials mentioned are - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/table_to_css_pt1.html, and http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/table_to_css_pt2.html.

  • Every image on my iMac was imported into iPhoto!

Every image on my iMac was imported into iPhoto, even icons, templates, DVD covers and game images. There are even videos in my iPhotos library. He (who shall remain nameless!) was really only trying to help and clicked the wrong thing - obviously. What a mess! How do I get them back where they belong? (I'm still using iPhoto '09.)

    benferbj wrote:
Thanks, John. I read in another post that when you delete an image from iPhoto, it deletes the original from the computer too, not just the library. So, I was understandably nervous.
Understandably, yes. He who shall not be named may have chosen "Import to Library..." and selected a folder or even your entire hard disk's contents. Doing so would result in every readable image file being imported.
If that's what he did, I just did too and verified original files remained untouched after importing then subsequently deleting them from iPhoto. So, I have no explanation for whatever the other post indicated.

  • Help! Photoshop edited jpg color distorts when imported into Muse

Okay, so I am trying to build a photography webpage (among others) and I edit most of my photos in photoshop. All photos that I edit in photoshop and save to jpg, look great when printed, uploaded to facebook, etc. however when I import them into Adobe Muse for and put them on my webpage, the colors of the photos become desaturated and/or slightly distorted (so that they look dull). When I edit images in lightroom and save them as jpg and import them into Muse, they look fine, but colors edited in photoshop seem to mess up my photos when imported into Muse.
    What am I doing wrong?!
    Susan

You are using some odd color management settings and not converting to sRGB most likely... Check your settings in PS itself and the Save for Web dialog and experiment around.

Nothing happens to the music on your computer. Nothing will "combine" unless this other person actually downloads something to your computer. Simply logging into an iTunes account does not instigate any automatic downloads of anything.

  • How do I get audio back on single clip that loses audio when imported into Premiere Pro CC?

I've got one clip out of many that for some reason won't play any audio when imported into Premiere Pro.  I am new to Premiere Pro so am hoping it's something stupid I've done, but this is a problem with just a single clip exported the same way as all my others, the original audio is loud (not quiet) and none of the FAQ issues seem to apply (ie I haven't muted the audio or anything stupid like that)
The clip was exported from Plural Eyes into a "master" Premiere Pro project where the audio is fine. I exported it as a short MP4 clip and if I play the clip in Windows Media Player the audio is there loud and clear.
But when I import the clip into a fresh Preimiere Pro CC project this clip appears with just the "film strip" icon on the far left in the Timeline panel, unlike other clips which have an icon that shows "film strip" in the background and "audio wave" in the foreground.
I'm hitting so many glitches with the CC editions of Premiere Pro and After Effects which have annoying inconsistencies between them I'm tempted to just go back to Sony Vegas Pro (single program, no hassle) but hoping most of these issues are down to "newbie incompetence". Very hard to understand why this one clip out of many should be giving me this specific problem though. Any ideas?

I'm getting so many weird results. Most go away by simply closing the project and re-opening and I only have 6GB memory but even so, I'm disappointed by what I thought was supposed to be more "world class" video editing software than Sony Vegas Pro which I found to be a lot more stable. Also struggling with differences between Premiere and After Effects. Every time I want to do something in Pro I seem to need to go to After Effects and vice-versa. After Effects lets me do more of what I could "just do" in Vegas Pro timeline, but it's hideous for lining up audio and having to render anything in RAM to even get a clue as to what a change has done.  Need to add Audition to the long list as well I suspect. Fun times!

  • Imported ID pdfs appearance alters when imported into Quark as picture

Can anyone tell me why Indesign created pdf's change when imported into a quark picture box? I receive ads from various companies for a magazine in hi-rez pdf formats and when imported the appearance changes to include all the components/elements/boxes/etc. of the make-up of the ad....the things that are not supposed to be seen. Please help... advertisers are complaining and i can not stop it, or fix it.

Quark converts PDFs to EPS internally and thus has no support for the
more advanced features of PDFs exported from InDesign.
You should request EPS or PDF X/1-a if you want to continue to use
Quark. That said, this is an InDesign forum so I will heartily recommend
    you switch to InDesign.
As you've discovered more and more folks are doing just that and you're
going to be left in the dust and those advertisers are going to be
looking elsewhere to spend their money.

  • How do I correct the darkest blacks from becoming bright blue when imported into LR?

When shooting in RAW with a Sony RX100M3 the darkest blacks become bright blue when imported into LR. Any ideas when this happens and how I can fix it?

If this is occurring in the develop module the you have the shadow warning turned on and this shows as blue, just like the highlights show as red. You can turn this off by clicking the triangle in the upper left hand corner of the histogram.

I thought that there was a way to have the image open up larger in a new little window when you click the thumbnail on a photos page....when I click a thumbnail on my photos page it takes me right to slideshow view and the images are displayed too small to see fine detail (I am a retoucher, so my clients need to be able to see hi res images) I can't find a way to change the size of the slideshow images or to get my thumbnails to click open to a hi res version in a new window. The only solution I can think of is to use a blank template page, make each small image a link to a hidden page with the image at hi resolution....but this would take forever and I would have a gazillion pages on my site that way.
