Low SNR & Disconnects

I am experiencing low snr and the fastest sync speed I've ever had. Not a cause for complaint you would think however I am getting frequent disconnects.
I really don't understand it I'm on a long line and have had issues previously but usually after frequent disconnects noise margin goes up and speed goes down, however I seem to be reconnecting at the same low margin and higher speeds.
Look forward to any comments.

Hi Westfield-Chris,
Thanks for posting and welcome back!
Sorry for the problems you're having with your broadband connection.  I understand your speed is good at the moment but it's a little too good and causing the broadband connection to drop out.
It's dropping due to the low noise margin and I'll be happy to help sort this out.  Click on my username and under the "about me" section of my profile you'll see the link to get in touch with us.
Cheers,

  • Low SNR, downstream dead.

Since Joining BT last year in April I have always had an issue in the evening where the SNR drops to about 3db from 5.6/6db and the downstream part on the internet stops working, So I can not download anything but uploading is perfectly fine.
Ive had numerous engineers over who can not find any faults as they come over in the day. when its been light and the SNR has risen again
One engineer went out of his way and went over what the job order said to do and phoned up wholesale who just said its causing that as I am over utalising the upstream.  The openreach engineer still was not convinced as he beleives me that there is an issue.
Yet this is not the issue as when its just one user using a remote desktop connection and then suddenly stop working when its gotten fully dark outside.
However this issue suddenly stopped in late november and has been perfectly fine over christmas until this week. I have to keep rebooting the homehub every time it happens for it to work again.
So I am sure there is something wrong with our drop cable or somewhere on the line that interference is being picked up when it is dark.
However the engineers I have had over did not check the drop, junction box on my house or any connections on the phone pole.
Is there anyway I can get BT to install a new cable as this is the only thing they have not tried yet. Like I even removed the extensions and just used the test socket and this still has not solved the issue

When it happens, do not reboot the hub, simply disconnect the adsl input for about 20 seconds, then plug it back in.
It will then re-sync at a slightly slower speed, but a higher noise margin.
If it does not do it the first time, then repeat it about six times, waiting for it to re-sync each time.
Once the noise margin has rised, leave it alone.
This process should tell the DLM that the line is unstable in the evening, and adjustments need to be made.
If the low noise margin problem carries on for more than a week, it should be possible for BT to re-adjust the noise margin
manually, so that it does not drop below 6db.
This may result in slightly lower speed, but a more stable line.

  • Low SNR, Causing Connection Stability Issues?

Hello I'm not using the HomeHub so I cant post the usual home hub image however I shall post the one from my Netgear.
Normally I get about 5.5MB downloads so the line sync's somewhere around 6000 ish? With 4-6DB line margins, at this the line stays connected for months at a time no issues. However today my noise margin has dropped to to 0-1DB causing my sync rate to go up and rendering the line very unstable. I have tried to restart the Internet multiple times hoping this would increase the noise margin and return it to being stable to no affect. Can anyone give me a hand getting it back up to between 4-6 where my line is very stable and perhaps fixing it there?
    Thanks Carl.

    Hi imjolly,
We have 1 Main socket which has  ADSL v1.0 written on the front that splits broadband and phone as soon as it enters. A BT engineer gave it us when he visited a while ago. Off this the router is connected to the broadband socket straight away with prob <5ft of cable (Standard stuff that comes with the homehub).
The phone side has a splitter and extenstions plugged into it however i did try unplugging them and just leaving the phone plugged in next to the master socket and it seemed to made no difference.
I will try dissconnecting the cable as you have sugested hopefully this will help.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Crazy low speed from the off

    hi all,
im a (relatively) new BT customer in a brand new build house. Before moving in i did some digging around to see what sort of speeds i could get with different providers and settled on BT as they seemed to be the best average and i preferred the BT home hub compared to the other ISPs offerings. (i would also add that im an IT engineer so did the usual **bleep** studying beforehand although whether this is a disadvantage remains to be seen)
i have been on the service for a month or two now and am getting dreadful low speeds.  On average i get 750kbps down (max 950kbps) and 200kbps up.  i have checked the disitance to the exchange with all the usual tools and its 0.9 miles away apprently.  I have checked out all of my wiring and tried several ADSL filters but this is the speed i am stuck with.
I opened a case with BT and am getting the usual. (i would mention at this point that there is an issue with the BT site where you check what speeds you MAY get, if you're not a BT customer (which i wasn't) and you stick your address you get the 'up to 12meg' result, if you ARE a BT customer then you put your actual phone number in you get the REAL result.  in my case i was advised i would get 'around 12meg' but then i was told i would actually get 'around 1meg', this is not good)
i am advised by BT that my exchange will get ADSL2 by the end of this year (2x-3x? ADSL) but im not counting my chickens.  For info i came from a great 20meg cable connection in my old house so theres a big old step in the right direction
Im sure that this has been covered many a time on these forums so apologies if i just havent found my answers and feel free to just link me somewhere or copy and paste some jazz
anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
    thanks in advance
    David

As already been advised in bits and bobs:
The top tips for a good connection on a long line are as follows:
    1) Is removing the bell wire as I have already advised and to have a good clean socket, with all the wires moved away from the connected wires, or snipped off all together, just to ensure as little interference as possible.
    2) Would be to get a business hub, there are two available on Ebay, the 2701 (pictured right) and the 2700hgv (pictured left), now the 200HGV's seem to give a better sync speed by about 300kbps give or take, but I find they are less stable, whereas the 2701 decreases the sync speed but is far more stable, and good at holding onto low SNR's, I've seen it hold all night at -2dB Noise Margin and Im on a 9km line.
    3) Would be to get a shieled RJ11 cable, as this can reduce the amount of interference, and also importantly it has the twists in as the telephone cables do to refract UV radiation, and Impulse noise just to name a few things.  And the ends of them are gold plated with 24k gold just to ensure maximum transition .

  • Improving SNR levels

    Hi all,
    I have the following setup:
    - point to point link over 2km
    - 2 of the BR1310G-A-K9-R
    - 2 Yagi AIR-ANT1949
I tried to allign the antennat few times but I still get pretty low values of the signal and SNR. Any ideas how can I improve the SNR ratio? I attach some screenshots with the values. I already checked the channels congestion and it seems like CH 1 is the best choice. How about power setting sof the antennas? Shall I leave the values as default?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott and thanks again for your help. I have only 2 bridges in point2point configuration so guess here no need for antennas polarization change, actually I was going to do that today but I'll leave it then. We checked the connectors, realligned the antennas and now get around -61dB signal strength and SNR jumps like a crazy from 20dB to 12dB, what could be causing that? We installed the bridges and antennas very close to huge telecoms antennas, do you think that could be causing the low SNR values?
On the other hand, we have around 200 PCs connecting a server on the other side. I deployed WPA-TKIP encryption so we did some tests. WIth around 20 stations connected we have a very good and stable link. Those 20 PCs generate about 200Kbps traffic. Now, when we connect around 200 PCs that generate around 2.5Mbps the link saturates very quickly and responses to the server over the link come to 300-500ms and worse, as opose with the 20 PCs, the responses are about 2-3ms.
Another observation, when we disable the encryption and connect all the 200 PCs, the link seems to be stable and responses from the server are mainteined at around 30ms, it jums occasionaly to 60-70ms but accasionally.
Do you think low values of SNR could be causing this? What can we do in this situation? We cannot leave the client without any security on the wireless link.
Please respond today if you can, I am at the client's site already so I could use your expertise.
    Thanks in advance,
    Remi

You won't notice dropouts really unless you play online multiplayer games.
How did you check this, I wasn't aware the Homehub displayed that.
A low SNR doesn't always mean more drop outs. If you have a good line the SNR will be slow and your connection will be rock solid. There should be no reason for drops outs.
Playing online games makes no difference. If your line drops out you'd notice it whateevr you were doing be that browsing, shopping, streaming, downloading or playing online games.

  • Massive Reduction in Broadband Speed

    Hi,
I am having woes with my BT Broadband Connection and am having absolutely zero joy in plotting a path through the indian call centre scripted process.
It all began about 7 days ago when both my telephone stopped working and my broadband speed collapsed to about 100kbps DL
I actually didnt notice the landline issue (I barely use it) so I reported the fault as a broadband speed issue.
To be fair to BT they diagnosed the broader issue and raised a fault on the PSTN line which an engineer came out to look at and got my telephone working again by recapping the cable on the last hop on the street just outside my house.
This however has left me with broadband that is still incredibly unusably slow. Looking at the information I have available to me it seems to be due in my eyes due to an ongoing low SNR on a degraded line that has been made good enough for a phone call but not to provide a decent broadband connection speed.
I have captured some stats from the HH2 for those interested
    VPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.5
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 30.6 dB / 5.8 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 39.5 dB / 20.9 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 20.5 dBm / 12.4 dBm
Download speedachieved during the test was - 211 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 100-500 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :572 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 852 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 350 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 1.35:11.5:87.48 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes
xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.5; downstream: 575 kbit/s, upstream: 854 kbit/s; output Power Down: 20.6 dBm, Up: 12.4 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 39.5 dB, Up: 20.9 dB; snr Margin Down: 5.0 dB, Up: 29.5 dB)
The call centre seem to be telling me they think the problem is one dealt with by BT wholesale and that they as my ISP cannot help me. As far as I can tell from the BT wholesale website however they dont deal with the general public. What do I need to say to these people to get a BT wholesale engineer to come and fix the line ?
They have already done something called an extended diagnosis ? However the call centre guy said he couldnt see the results of it on his system.
It is all getting rather frustrating as each time I ring I have to spend a good 30 mins running through the standard call centre checks including replacing microfilters, unscrewing faceplate on wall connection to connect to "test socket" etc. which seems pretty pointless at this stage.

    welcome to the forum
have you always been on 21CN up to 20mb or did you receive an email recently from BT advising about exchange upgrade?
From the brief stats you have posted I think all the problems with your line has caused numerous disconnections/resets which the exchange has seen as a bad noise problem and you are currently in a banded profile until your line stabilises.
Normally this last 3/5 days and if there are no further resets/disconnections and you stay connected 24/7 then your speed your speed should return to normal.
please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1)

  • Record and Playback performance goes down at high frequency

    Hi,
    We're testing record and playback using USRP-2920( LV 2013sp1, NI-USRP 14)
To test it, we downloaded record and playback example code.
Signal source is a function generator outputting 6 MHz bandwidth 8 VSB modulation signal.
USRP Rx parameters are center = variant / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz and Tx parameters are center = same as Rx center / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz
The problem is... in low carrier frequency like 70MHz, quality of playback signal is great.
But in high carrier freqency like 2.2GHz, SNR and signal power dropped significantly i.e. they tend to drop as carrier frequency goes high.
And  the strange thing is as carrier frequency is increased, a small peak on the center is increased as well.
Please check the attatched file to see the tendancy.
So.. my question is why is this tendancy occures?(we tested another USRP and the result was same as before)
and what should we do to reduce this effect?
    Regards,
    Youngmin

record and playback results.xls ‏469 KB

    Hi,
I suggest a couple of things:
NI USRP 2920 is a non-calibrated device. So setting a gain value of 0 at different frequencies could mean a different actual gain. So try increasing the Rx recording gain (on the USRP) in cases where you observe low SNR. Similarly Tx is not calibrated.
Is the signal recording done with cables or over wireless medium ? You can try to eliminate any spurious signals if you use SMA cables while recording.
I think the power at the center of the spectrum is the DC offset. You may refer to the DC Offset/LO leakage section in the best practices section here http://www.ni.com/white-paper/13881/en/
    Thanks.

Novell does not officially monitor these forums.
Suggestions/Opinions/Statements made by me are solely my own.
These thoughts may not be shared by either Novell or any rational human.
Nope, nothing refering to appdata (only thing it finds is appdatalrucache but that is probably not what you are asking for)...
I've now tried assiging the bundle both to device and to user but still nothing happes, works fine on our 11.2.x agent workstations.

  • Migrate PPPoE/Virtual-Interface from 7206VXR to ASR 1002

    Good Day,
I have been attempting to migrate services from an existing 7206VXR to a recently purchased ASR1002 and could use some help.
My mistake in assuming that the config would be similar to 7206VXR, but there are changes - mainly VRF and cisco-avpair attributes that need added to radius.
Our lab test, with the below ASR config will allow the user to authenticate successfully but does not assign IP address.

I have also tried assigning a static IP to the CPE, however the CPE cannot see 199.200.107.1.
No doubt the problem is something simple I appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Good Day Manuel,
"...client is not getting IP address even though the sessions seems to be up. Is this correct?" Correct.
What I am seeing and suspecting is the problem has to do with 'ip:ip-unnumbered=interface'.
Trying with the ip:ip-unnumbered=Loopback111 or GigabitEthernet0/0/3.111 (for testing) debugging reports "Session creation failed due to full virtual-access interfaces not being supported...", as soon as the attribute is removed in radius the client authenticates but does not get an IP address. I would rather not use Loopback if possible.
GE0/0/3.111 is basically the client egress and GE0/0/2.20 is the ingress/router gateway
Also seeing this debug message, "...Unable to add line attributes from ANCP ... Unable to Add ANCP Line attributes to the PPPoE Authen attributes" which may or may not relate to ip-unnumbered attribute.
I hope the information isn't too much or confusing, sure appreciate the help.
    debugging with ip:vrf-id=CV_VRF w/o ip:ip-unnumbered

Since then I have had no fewer than 11 line engineers and broadband engineers visit and /or attempt to fix a fault with my BB service which manifests itself in pitiful SNR levels after dark - right down into the negative figures.
What's been done / tried so far -
    New main socket
    New filtered faceplate
    New drop line to pole
    Pairs changes
    Fixing resistance faults / battery
Checking out the earth in my electrical wiring (all perfect)
    Eliminating any local interference issues
Consulting REIN engineers (although I have no evidence this was actually done)
    Changing D side at cabinet
    Lift and Shift (yesterday)
I'm using a 2wire Gateway 2700  is its about the only router that will hold on to the line at all. I live about 1.5km from the exchange in Hove.

This results in a totally unusable service with web pages at a crawl at best.
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. I'm just about at the end of my tether, coming home every night to deal with this is no fun, not to mention all the days I've spent waiting in for engineers. Forum mods are aware, and although everyone has been without exception extremely polite and tried to help, the end result is a fail.
This is an Option 3 full price package. Surely I have good grounds to ask for an amicable exit from my contract, as BT cannot provide a stable service?

Replying here just to update and let others know what to expect. This issue now been with the mods for weeks and I have escalated to the high level complaints team who are looking into and have asked me to send copies of router screen dumps etc showing the low SNR as "evidence"
Well I have posted all this info before here and in previous threads, but I have lots of this evidence so happy to supply if it eventually gets me somewhere. Have to say though, I am not confident.
This is what is happening as soon as sunset kicks in, think it is pretty obvious where the SNR will end up once dark. i know from experience this will be a downward slide until 2dB or lower and the subsequent loss of margin issues with my service. I am currently syncing at 6-7 meg with an IP profile of 5 meg, and have attenuation of 39, living 1.5km from the exchange.
Absolutely fed up with this and now it seems that it will take some more weeks for this to be investigated.
     And behold....

  • WLAN Speed Difference

    Good morning,
I am noticing a difference in speed when I connect to one WLAN SSID vs another. I have checked the WLC with no noticable difference in the configuration of one over the other. When I do a Speedtest to the same server I get 20Mbps on the slow WLAN and over 150Mbps on the other.
Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Could there be a bug in the controller software?
    Model 5508 Running :7.4.110.0

“Wireless clients are experiencing very slow speed” ,   is a common  problem on a wireless lan environment.
As part of troubleshooting this, we got to take care of
    1)      Low Signal Strength.
    2)      Low SNR.
    3)      Insufficient Data rate.
    4)      Packet Drop.
    5)      Interference.
    6)      Client Driver problem.
    7)      QoS related problem.
    8)      Problem with Roaming.
    9)      OR  Any configuration related problem.
During the course of troubleshooting, we do need a way to test the throughput, as and when we make any changes.
IPERF comes as a very handy tool. This can easily tell us the speed of data transfer.
Here are the details for the IPERF test.

  • Record and playback of OATS functional testing in multiple tabs

New tabs functionality have been a part of browsers for sometime now. But Openscript doesnot record any action relating to new tabs. Is there a way to modify the code so as open new tabs and switch between tabs during the playback?
This will reduce sufficient time during testing of multiple URLs which share the same cookies.
This is required for Fusion Functional testing.

    Hi,
I suggest a couple of things:
    Thanks.

  • An control application

    Hello to all people,
I'm trying to monitoring a set of rotative machinery. I want to shut down the machine when a monitoring parameter like vibration or rotate velocity overcomes a established limit or level. I was thinking to use a switch to develop this aplication, but I'm not sure about this. I will be very greateful if anyboby can give me some guidelines.
    Thanks.

    Jorge,
I would agree that certainly a switch of some kind should be employed to control the machine's power. If turning it on and off by either applying or removing current is the only way to control it, then likely the best option would be to use an external relay controlled digitally by either a PC, PXI system, or programmable automation controller (e.g. FieldPoint). When all parameters are within limits, the digital line would remain high, thus closing the relay and allowing current to flow. However, once something goes wrong (rotation or vibration out of limits), the digital line would go low and disconnect the switch.
As far as a choice of platform, do you already have some equipment monitoring the machine -- or are you starting from scratch?

  • I am losing connection to internet...

I recently reset my DSL router and now when I open explorer I can not connect until I do a repair.  I get a "local" connection only.  I can browse to other pc's that are shared but can not get out to internet until I do a repair.  After repair, I can surf for a while, but when I come back later or the next day, it is the same thing.  I am seeing an error 12007 in diagnostics.  It looks like this:
