Lower rez PDF's?

I make photo proof sheet PDF's for clients using the Low Quality setting but would like to get even smaller, lesser quality PDF's. Can this be done easily? . The pictures are 36 mb Raw files, 50 plus per PDF which makes a somewhat large PDF file.
Thank you, Andy

CS5 bridge version has a lot more options in resizing and defining quality
and size in Output Module.
Also Acrobat Pro offers a lot options in resizing PDF.
For CS4, you can also first use a batch to resize your files (or use the
Image processor for that) to a much smaller versions that also helps in
smaller files.

  • Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks in advance

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

  • How can I change the settings to be lower case pdf not upper case PDF?

my processing site for our business will not allow documents to be saved in upper case PDF, but I can't find where to change it to lower case pdf....which I am told will fix the issue.

Are you talking about the file-name or the actual contents of the file?

  • Images too low-rez

When I place an image in the CS4 version it's fine but the same image in CS6 is low-rez. What gives?

The layout file, minus photo, was created in CS4. After opening it in CS6 I then placed a photo and got the jaggies. Did not move the photo after placing it. My guess is that CS6, being a new installation, was settling in. (That's a technical term.) In any event it's working smoothly now, no need for an extra linking step with other photos that I'm placing.
    Thanks for your help, Peter.

  • Low-rez or no thumbnails in Cover Flow & Icon views!

Cover Flow used to display sharp and clear high-resolution jpeg previews, but now it display either low-rez previews for most or nothing at all for some. In Icon view, the Finder used to be able to generate thumbnails for jpeg files that don't have icons, but now many jpeg files are just blank in Icon view.
Does this have anything to do with the newer updates?

This problem hit me suddenly about two days ago. Can't seem to fix it. Haven't tried rebuilding Spotlight index yet, trying to avoid it, but that might solve the issue. Perhaps before I leave for the day that's what I'll do, and see how things are in the morning.
FYI, others have this issue as well:

  • Images very low rez

I did a small test slide show in iPhoto of images from Aperture and they look extremely low rez.in the preview. Then I exported to iDVD and they still look low rez. In Aperture there 16bit raw files. How can I be sure they will be of a higher quality?
    Thank You

You are probably using the display (Thumbnail) images rather than the original hi res photos - probably the Aperture forum would be a better place to ask about Aperture questions - iPhoto is using what you give it from Aperture - not really an iPhoto question

  • Random low rez icons in Dock, Switcher, and Finder?

Is anyone else getting randomly appearing low resolution app icons since updating to 10.6 or 10.6.1? They change to low rez jaggy fuzzy wherever they're loaded from the system. So they might appear in the Finder, the Dock, the Switcher, or in odd places like the Time Machine hard drive icon.
Sometimes they're normal and sometimes they switch to low.. I can't tell why.

Found some information on this Apple thread.
    Also here at MacFixIt.
None of the solutions presented in either forum are permanent fixes, only temporary. Restarting usually makes the problem go away for awhile, and is the easiest less detrimental solution.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a fix soon.

  • Built-in PDF viewer could better render low quality PDF using the recognized text

I've been a little frustrated with this. When I view a low quality PDF on a university website, zooming in/out on firefox (v34.0 and v35.0.1 on linux is what I've tried) proves that the quality could be drastically improved. The original fonts looks like the pdf-lowqual.png file below: (unable to upload images on here)
    http://i59.tinypic.com/169kkcw.png
While zooming in or out, the font displays as normal "hypertext" or whathave you before going back to looking ugly again, as seen here:
    http://i61.tinypic.com/2gvptw0.png
Is there a way to permanently display the recognized text with local or internet fonts? I assume the text is recognized as that is what allows one to select text.

[[Use the Adobe Reader plugin to view or download PDF files]] or [[View PDF files in Firefox without downloading them]] are the current offerings for viewing pdfs in Firefox.
However, there are alternatives like embedding fonts into the pdf. I do also know that there are web safe fonts with similar function: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_typography#Web-safe_fonts]

  • Rendering a Low Rez  QT of my 2 Hr Movie

    Hello Board,
A couple of months ago I had my movie mixed and all was well. Recently I did some cuts and adjustments. The sound designer/mixer needs me to render a low rez QT of the new version and give it to him so that he can sync the old mix against the new video.
He says he needs a low rez QT movie that includes the sound at 16/48, and needs the file to be 2 gigs or less.
My movie is standard mini DV.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a Compressor or Quick Time Conversion setting that will accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Lin

    Settings for FCP:
    1. File > Export Using QT Conversion
    2. From this window click the Setting Popup menu.
    3. From here choose "Custom..." At the bottom of the long list.
    4. A new window will popup allowing you to choose your custom settings.
    5. Make sure you're in the General Tab.
    6. In the Aspect Ratio popup menu (the first one)
    7. Choose the 2nd one from the top. "Multimedia Large (4:3)"
    8. It will give you screen size of 320x240
    9. You can choose "Custom" from that same popup menu and choose your own aspect ratio.
    10. In the Audio area of this window. Choose your settings 16-bit and 48KHz.
    11. Now you have a small video, with good audio.

  • Is there a difference between Illustrator hi res PDF and a Quark hi rez PDF

I'm a little confused when it comes to PDFs. I want to send a Hi rez high quality PDF to our new rip software. I thought that an Illustrator PDF would be good enough but I'm now being told that I should make an eps of the job and bring that into quark and make a high rez PDF that way. Is that right? Someone once told me that you never trust quark to make a PDF. If the Illustrator way is the right way then what are the best settings for my PDFs. Many thanks if anyone can help.

I think if you know what you're doing, either way is good.
One problem with creating a PDF from Illustrator is if your page needs bleed, it will chop it off at the Trim dimension. So, then you have to make your page bigger in .ai and create internal trim marks.
If you are gonna use Quark, make sure you flatten your transparency and save as an EPS to place in Quark.
Probably the best bet is to save your Illustrator as native .ai with PDF compatibility and then placing that .ai file in an inDesign page. inDesign will flatten the transparency correctly.

  • Low-res PDF for web posting

IDCS3 -- I have a really cool little brochure with lots of art and transparencies. I need a decent-looking low-res PDF to post on the client's website. At the moment, from the IDCS3 PDF preset [Smallest File Size] it's exporting at 5.4 MB -- that's too big, it should be less than half that size.
I know transparencies use up a lot of space but don't know how to resolve that -- that's probably my biggest issue.
Someone suggested "Printing" to Adobe PDF 8; that's cool except half of my logo is disappearing... Haven't been able to resolve that.
Can someone guide me to some resources/instructions on the best way to save a lovely design for posting on the web as a low-res PDF?

    >Replaced the vector art with lo-res PDFs but they didn't help the size situation much.
The lo-res PDF is the same vector data, but in a different format. When you make a PDF from that, you are making the same PDF as before.
    >I saved one of the pieces of vector art as a lo-res Photoshop file but its quality in the PDF was awful.
Because it was rasterized at a low resolution.
You have exactly three options, in order of simplicity:
Just keep the file as is and let people download a 5 MB file. While this is obviously the easiest thing for you, I think it's the least productive. I would try the other options if this were my assignment.
Rasterize the vector data. You can do this with a Rasterize effect in Illustrator, using a high resolution, then play with different compression options and resolution when saving the PDF from InDesign.
Simplify the vector data. Delete small details that won't be seen on screen. Use Object > Path > Simplify to reduce the number of points on complex paths. If there is vector art that is cropped out in the PDF, delete it from the Illustrator file. Use symbols and pattern swatches to replace repetitive elements.

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • Can I create a low resolution pdf file?

I have a 12 page document with a number of pictures which I wish to save as a PDF and upload to a website. In Pages when I export it as a PDF I get a choice of 'Good', 'Better' or 'Best' for image quality. Choosing 'Good' the resulting file is 8MB, rather too large for my liking. However when choosing 'Best' the resulting file size is still 8MB. So my questions are:
    1. What's the difference between these settings?
    2. Is it possible to create a PDF which reduces the image quality to screen resolution to make a smaller file?
I'd be grateful for any help.

Before you save to .pdf save your Pages document.
    +Menu > File Reduce File Size+
This will trim all your images to their cropped size and lower their resolution to 72dpi.
Create your .pdf using whichever of the settings you like.
Open the .pdf in Preview .app and go
    +Menu > File > Save As… > Format: PDF > Quartz Filter: Reduce File Size+
If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro
    +Menu > Document > Reduce File Size+
    or
+Menu > Advanced > PDF Optimizer… > set the resolution and options to your liking+
