Lower Thirds: Saving Settings

I have created a simple lower third using the text generator tool in the viewer. I would like to be able to have a "template" that I can use to make all my other lower thirds look exactly the same. I am betting you can't do this in the text generator. Since I don't want to have to set my font, drop shadow, etc., over and over again for every single ID, what is the simplest way to do this? I'm guessing "paste attributes" won't get me there.
Thanks a lot.
Giraut.

Years ago I created a special FCP project to store title styles (scrolls, lower thirds, etc) that I've made that I thought I may like to use again sometime. Whenever I create a new style that I really like, I copy and paste it into that project.
Whenever I need to use one again, I open my "titles" project file, then copy the style that I want and paste it in the current project.

  • Exporting Lower Thirds from AE CC 12.2 to be used in Premiere

    hi everyone,
I'm currently in the trial versions of adobe AE and Premiere for Mac.  I'm stuck...trying to troubleshoot whether AE or/and Premiere is not properly set up.
I have dug up so many youtube tutorials and forum posts on how to export lower thirds with alpha channel from AE...  and everyone has the same solution,
Here is my lower third on AE, as you can see it is transparent:
Export using the following settings as everyone has taught:
Import into Premiere, I layer it over my footage and it just doesn't show up...like it is not there.
Yet, the footage preview shows the lower third, but my preview doesn't...
    Anyone know what is wrong?
I downloaded a free web-based sample lower thirds quicktime (Created with: Adobe After Effects CS5.5 10.5 Windows 64)
to test if all lower thirds don't work...sample works perfect...  therefore, I conclude that it has to be that my mac AE is exporting in a format that Premiere can't show properly.
Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thanks

Just one: what are the dimensions of your Premiere Pro sequence?
You have rendered at 1280x720 from After Effects. If your Premiere Pro sequence is smaller, such as 720x480, the problem would be that your lower-thirds graphic is offscreen due to the difference in frame sizes. If this is the case, you can scale the lower-thirds clip in Premiere Pro to the smaller size.

  • Lower third obcsures video if captions imported

Hi - Got a problem with a lower third I created. It requires 4 video tracks. I have created this within a sequence which - if I pull onto the main sequence - does what I intend, giving me an animated lower third, whilst leaving the underlying video untouched.
Not wanting to copy and paste this lower thirds sequence from project to project, I have rendered it out to an mpg2. However, when I import and pull this mpg2 on to a timeline, it completely obscured the underlying video (the screen is black, except for the caption). What is going  on here and is there a way of saving my lower third in such a way this will not happen?
    Thanks for help.

Your MPEG2 has no alpha channel, which is required for transparency.
You can reexport in a format that allows alpha channels, or you can use the Media Browser to 'import' that sequence from one project into the one you're working on.
The better solution might be to recreate that lower third in After Effects, and use Dynamic Link to bring that into each project.  This way alone, any changes that might someday need to be made will cascade to every project.

  • Problems with basic lower third ?

Is anyone having a problem with the "basic lower third" template ? I keep getting a second, "ghost" copy of the first (top) line of the title created, shifted about 10 pixels above the original .. this only seems to happen after the project and/or library is saved and re-opened ... FCP X 10.1.4, Macbook Pro Retina ... thanks in advance

Thanks, but nope, if you look closely, you can see that there is a black drop shadow already set ... unselecting it just gives you the same double image in white, just without the black drop shadow ... bizarrely, it's only ever the top line that is doubled up ... it's as if a second copy of the top line is created ... it is also un-selectable on screen, i.e. if you click on the second copy you can't edit or move it ... the second copy only appears after the project/library is closed and re-opened ... i.e. it all looks fine when you create it

  • How to create a lower third in motion

I want to create a lower third in motions just like the ones that iMovie 08 has with a fade effect into it.
can anyone help me on this or is there a video tutorial on this thank you

Hey man, have you made ANY progress? You're asking for help, and I basically TOLD you how to do it. No luck? Do you want me to make it for you? Should I charge at my "friends and family" rate?
Again, bro, just make a rectangle and mask it with a gradient, set the mask on luminosity. Done. Also make sure your project settings have a transparent background, not solid.
Overlay that .motn on any video. Done.
Not trying to be a jerk, but it's almost comedic...
You haven't posted anything about problems you're running into. Got any screen shots of what you're ending up with? What is your specific problem here.

  • How do I get a .PNg file working as a lower third?

I am doing news video for a site and they sent me their lower third graphic with their logo and it is in .PNG format.  I imported it but when I put it in video 2 layer above the video I want on top of it nothing shows up!  How do I fix this?

    What is your sequence setting.
What is the size of the png?
If the png is way larger then the sequence settings set it to match the framesize.

  • PSD Lower Thirds & FCP: Help!

Hi all, I have a lower thirds graphic as a PSD Photoshop file.
I am having difficulty incorporating the file into FCP. I have imported as layers into FCP but the formatting is all off. My project is 1920 x 1080 16:9. In Photoshop, I tried to save the document as a JPEG flattened. The background is not transparent. I used clipping paths and fooled around with background layer opacity but the background was always opaque on bringing into FCP.
Does anyone have suggestions on making the bg transparent in PS and saving in that program for easy manipulation in FCP. Or properly formatting a PSD layered doc in FCP?
    Thanks!

Here are the steps I follow when prepping a psd for FCP:
Start out by making sure your pixel dimensions and aspect ratio are correct for your frame size.
    1. save a copy because you will be flattening some elements
    2. merge all background elements into the background
    3. flatten out all type, vector, masked, or effected (styles) layers using the following method for CS2+:
    -select the layer to flatten
    -make new layer
-select both layers , make smart object & merge
this will rasterize the type and effects in the layer.
Now your file is ready to import to FCP. If you are pixel aspect ratio correction in photoshop, then the file should import correctly according to your easy setup, if you have been owrking in square pixerls in photoshop, then be sure to correctly identify the aspect ratio in the sequence setting for the sequence fcp creates when you import the psd - these will inherit the pixel aspect ratio setting for the sequence preset set in your easy setup, which is usually not square.
Hope this helps. Really, you shouldn't have to bother with extracting alpha channels and keying out layers in FCP.

  • Lower Third Artifacts

    Lower Third Artifacts
Ive worked in the DV25 compression space for years, so Im used to small, negligible artifacts that show up when inserting graphics from Photoshop. Lately however, these minor defects seem to be growing in size and frequency. With Premiere CS3, the text in my lower thirds, (created in Photoshop) are surrounded by what appears to be compression artifacts.
If you have ever saved an image for the web in Photoshop, and you applied a ridiculous amount of compression, you will know the kind of look I am referring to. Ive been a Premiere user for years and have never known this issue to be so predominant. I create all my thirds in a DV25 (.9 pixel) work space and my imported files match my frame 100%.
Im wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and if you have found a solution.
    Thanks in advance.

You may want to start with putting shadows behind your text.

  • Lower third super "bug"?

Don't know if there's a solution or if it's "just one of those things"...
But I started a project in PPro CS2, with lower third graphics created in AE with an alpha channel so they're self-keying. I had them fade in at the same time a directional blur effect was fading out.
I recently updated to PPro CS4. When I opened this project in CS4, the lower third fades in okay, but at the point the blur reaches 0, the entire graphic jumps down a few lines.
I tried using a different type of blur, but it still jumps.
I tried reinserting the lower third and adding the fade in and blur fresh - but it still happens. To make sure it wasn't just the monitoring, I exported the section and the jump is definitely there.
It works okay without the blur, so I may have to settle for that.
Any suggestions? I just thought - I'll try reimporting the graphic, and also double check the alpha channels settings are correct...

There are a few bugs crawling around some of the filters in CS4 under certain conditions.  Try adding an opacity keyframe to the clips set to 100%.  it wont affect the effect, but this sometimes makes other filters behave.

  • Adding a lower-third causes footage to strobe

Every time I add an animated lower-third to my video (DV NTSC 720x486 4:3 interlaced), it causes the video under the lower-third to become stroby, as if the field order were screwed up. I'm not sure what's causing this. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Why would a lower-third affect the footage underneath it anyway?
    Thanks.

    b Problem Solved
I went to the Matrox forums and was directed to a thread there that was similar to the problem I was having. Here is an answer for anyone who is interested. It did have everything to do with the lower-third not being compatible with the Matrox project settings.
I exported a Targa Image sequence out of Digital Juice. I then right-clicked on the first image in the sequence and went to Matrox AVI + Alpha which will create a Matrox Mpeg2 I-frame + Alpha compatible AVI file (I didn't even know this utility existed, but apparently it's installed with the Matrox drivers). When I created an AVI file from the image sequence, it imported right in to my Matrox Premiere project and didn't need to be rendered. It played back perfectly and didn't cause any problems with the footage underneath.
I wish the guy I called at Matrox would have told me this solution instead of just telling me he couldn't help because Digital Juice was a third-party product.
    Oh well.

  • Pre-made Lower Thirds?

    Hello,
Is there any way to purchase a bunch of pre-made lower thirds and then import them into Premiere?
I am have the latest version of Premiere Pro CS4 and I use Max OS X Snow Leapord.
    Thanks,
    Robby

I do not know about pre-made Titles, but when you find a source that you like, you can add them to PrPro. You will be best advised to get .PSD formats, or TIFF, though JPEG's will work too. I have created several that I use as Assets in several Projects. Most of these are created in PS and AI, while some are created in Titler (maybe with elements from PS), and then Saved as a Title Template. The latter are directly accessible from within PrPro via Title>Based on Template>User Templates. With the .PSD's, I have to Import these as a still Asset for use in PrPro. In my case, I keep these in .PSD format, and with the Layers intact. This allows me to either Flatten the Layers, or to Import as a Sequence, with the Layers still separate, so I can animate them individually, if needed.
I do not have a source for pre-mades, but I'll bet that someone sells them.
Good luck, and if you find some good sources, please post the URL's. I'll add them to a list of available Assets, like music and SFX.
    Hunt
PS - if you find any in .PRTL format (the PrPro Title format, that cannot be used in anything but PrPro), these can then be copied to your Documents folder (do not know what it would be for Mac), and then use the Title>:Based on Template>User Templates.

  • File Error: Unknown File when trying to render a Motion Lower third

I'm getting this: "File Error: Unknown File" when trying to render a Lower third made in the Motion tab. I'm using FCP 6.0.6 and haven't had any issues with this before. It seems to work fine if there is just text, but as soon as I apply any effect, like a drop shadow, I get that error message.
    Thanks,

What's the exact format of the video you're working with and the exact specification the sequence you're editing in?

  • How to add picture over video to create a lower third look

Here's one I've not been able to deduce. After creating a small JPEG label, I want to place it on the lower portion of the video as a title, but one that has been custom made. In this case the logo needs to cover the lower right of the screen. Therefore, I need to bring this photo over into IPhoto, import it into the video, and be able to manipulate it to sit exactly where I want it to go. Picture in Picture doesn't work because that deals with two video elements. Crop doesn't work partially for the same reason but also because the crop box won't go that small or that wide.
This lower third logo needs to be able to stay over the entire length of the video (as in this case) or be able to fade in and fade out at certain times.
Not sure if IMovie has this capability, and would sure appreciate the tips. Thanks.

If you upgrade to iMovie 09, you could do this with the cutaway feature.
You would create the lower third title in Photoshop or the like. Make the slide in the same dimensions as your iMovie project and the same aspect ratio. Set the lower third title exactly where you would want it on the frame. Use PNG not JPEG so you can make the only thing showing your title. Everything else in the frame should be alpha-channel transparent.
Drag this over your video in iMovie 09 and select Cutaway.

  • How can I apply text position attributes (e.g. lower third) to more than one title at a time?

How can I apply text position attributes (e.g. lower third) to more than one title at a time?

    jhb3243
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
In the case of this theoretical lower third to be applied to more than one title at a time
    a. Is there text in the lower third besides a graphic of some kind?
    b. Are all the titles to which this lower third is to be applied all together on the Timeline or scattered?
If no text in lower third and titles all together, then, with text titles on Video 1 and lower third on Video 2, drag out the lower third to cover the length of the text titles on Video 1.
I do not find "lower third" title files to be in the same category as certain effects where the Copy and "Paste Attributes" or "Paste Effects and Adjustments" lend themselves so well.
Let us see what others have to say about all this. I will continue to experiment with what you seek and how you would prefer to get there. I am not optimistic but I will try.
    Thanks.

  • New Best Practice for Titles and Lower Thirds?

    Hi everyone,
In the days of overscanned CRT television broadcasts, the classic Title Safe restrictions and the use of larger, thicker fonts made a lot of sense. These practices are described in numerous references and forum posts.
Nowadays, much video content will never be broadcast, CRTs are disappearing, and it's easy to post HD video on places like YouTube and Vimeo. As a result, we often see lower thirds and other text really close to the edge of the frame, as well as widespread use of thin (not bold) fonts. Even major broadcast networks are going in this direction.
So my question is, what are the new standards? How would you define contemporary best practice?
    Thanks for your thoughtful replies!
