Lowering/muting startup chime volume on iMac 14,1 (Late 2013)?

Hello everyone,
Has anyone had any luck lowering or muting the startup chime volume on the iMac 14,1? I'm aware that general threads exist for muting the startup chime volume but a lot of solutions only work on Macbook Pro's.
Here are the techniques that I've tried or aren't practical:
- remembering to mute the volume before you shutdown
- never turning the iMac off, leaving it in sleep mode
- using StartNinja
- using Psst
- using the "Startup Sound" System Preferences pane.

I knew I had to deal with this answer (rkaufman's). But I suppose it's good that you posted this in case people who don't know any better want to mute their chime. You are absolutely right, which is why I'd prefer to simply lower the default volume of the chime rather than it being whatever the volume was right before one shuts down the computer.
One solution I've found is to leave Psst running in the background, which is a kludge but at least it works.

  • How I Managed to Install Windows 8.1 Pro on an iMac 27-inch, Late 2013

As is typical with many of my Boot Camp installs, this one did *not* goes as smoothly as planned. This installation was particularly troublesome, so I thought I would share how I managed to set up Boot Camp on a brand new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) using a Windows 8.1 Pro DVD and an external Apple SuperDrive. These are the steps I took:
Download Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721)
Copy Boot Camp Support Software to empty MS-DOS (FAT)-formatted USB key
Run Boot Camp Assistant and select third option only (Install Windows 7 or later version)
Computer would reboot after Boot Camp Assistant finished but would boot back into Mac environment and not continue Windows installation
Boot computer holding down option key and select Windows (with DVD icon) and go through initial setup process (could go as  far as trying to format Boot Camp partition as NTFS and then got stuck)
Quit Windows installer and reboot computer holding down option key and select EFI Boot
    Run Windows installer
These same steps worked for another iMac (same model) that I set up later the same day.

Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD

  • Fusion Drive option for iMac 21.5" late 2013

Fusion Drive option for iMac 21.5" late 2013 will upgrade main SATA HDD to 7200rpm model? Or just add SSD to standart 5400 rpm HDD for 21.5"?
    Thank you for your attention.

You can't add an internal drive, but you can add as much storage as you want via Thunderbolt.

  • PNY PC3-12800 DDR3 memory work in iMac 27-inch late 2013?

Will PNY PC3-12800 DDR3 memory work in iMac 27-inch late 2013? I am setting up a new iMac and also wondered if the iMac will read 24 GB memory. Meaning the original 4X2 and an added 8x2 = 24GB. Any advice on these two questions is appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It should work without any problem, always that it meets these specifications > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5908
Your Late 2013 iMac supports up to 32 GB of RAM, so you can use 24 GB of RAM without any issue. Also, you will take advantage of Dual Channel, that improves the RAM performance

ever since I have continuously problems with my external HDD that disconnect all the time and cause problems in other software (Lightroom, Adobe PS CS6) ... it is not  a HDD problem, because it occurs with my 3TB WD HDD (Time Machine), my 1TB WD and  1TB IOMEGA
any one have a solution? anyone dealt with this problem in the apple care program?

You are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare.  Call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Muting Startup chime without a 3rd party program

I have a mac os x 10.6.8 before I used to be able to mute the startup chime by muting the sound before shutting down my mac book pro, so the next time I woul start it up it didn't play thr chime.  Now when I try to do the same thing/process it won't mute the chime anymore. I was wondering if it could be tha there is a problem with my mac or something else?

Christine_1433, what did they tell you at Apple when you called them? I'm having the same issue. Setting everything on MUTE, plugging in a headphone and again setting Prefs on mute, I still get a LOUD start up chime. I downloaded Start Up Sound. It works if I have Mute checked but there are times I want to the chime to be audible, just now so loud. I use to be able to adjust it before shutdown but nothing works anymore, even resetting the PRAM doesn't help.
Everything listed in the other thread posts here, and then some has already been tried.

  • IMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) in TDM issue

With the late-2013 iMac 27" (3.5 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Mavericks 10.9.4) as the primary and the late-2012 iMac 27" (3.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Yosemite Beta 10.10) in TDM, the screen on the target display blinks off and on (goes black and comes right back after a split second). It happens intermittently, regardless of which Thunderbolt port is used to connect the two computers. The other Thunderbolt port on the primary is used to connect two external FW800 drives via a Thunderbolt-to-FW800 adapter.
Through exhaustive testing, and in constant consultation with AppleCare senior advisors, I have seemingly ruled out all obvious potential hardware or software culprits:
An AVR is feeding both computers consistent power.
Each computer's RAM and video cards have been tested with TechTool Pro 7: everything passed.
The Thunderbolt cable has been replaced.
Reset the NVRAM and SMC on both computers (though with all the testing I've done since, it might not hurt to do this again).
Both computers have been running the latest version of OS X (the target display is currently running Yosemite Beta).
Made sure to enable TDM after the primary iMac has completed its full startup process.
Turned down the display brightness on both computers.
Trashed the com.apple.windowserver.plist file on the late-2013 iMac.
None of these steps have resolved the problem and I am having NO other issues with either computer. I'm stumped, as are the AppleCare senior advisors I've been working with. This issue has been present since I first connected these two computers this way. Design flaw not revealed in testing? Problem part not revealed in testing?
Anyone here seen anything like this or have any ideas of what else I can try? Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dana

Purchase a Windows PC?? Gasp, indeed! No, after months of software and hardware troubleshooting with an AppleCare senior advisor, and me refusing to believe my brand new 2013 iMac could have a hardware defect, I finally took my entire configuration (both iMacs, voltage regulator, back-UPS) in to my local Apple Store. They were able to replicate the issue, but then misdiagnosed the problem and replaced an internal display cable. Within minutes of reconnecting everything at home, the problem returned. So AppleCare sent an authorized service tech to my home to replace the logic board. That seems to have finally solved the problem. Inconveniently, the tech didn't have what he needed to flash the new logic board with my serial number right then, so I had to wait two weeks to get that done. It did finally get done though, and now all is well.
    Good luck with your issue!

  • Can't install Mavericks 10.9.3 on 27" iMac 14,2 late 2013

I have the following Apple Macs:
    iMac 27" 14,2 late 2013
    MacBook Air 11" 6,1
    Mac Mini Server 2012
All are running Mavericks. #2 and #3 happily installed the update 10.9.3, but the iMac goes through the motions, reboots and then is still on 10.9.2. No errors listed, just doesn't get installed.
I tried to repeat the attempted install, by closing all programs first and disabling every security program (I use Intego), but no change.
    Any suggestions?
Incidentally I came across a similar thread with 10.9.2 where the OP re-installed Mavericks and then the upgrade worked. If I was to re-install Mavericks, will I loose any apss or data??

Click here and install it manually.

  • IMac 21.5 Late 2013 second hard drive

    Hi guys!
I have a late 2013 iMac 21.5 with 1Tb HDD and would like to know if it's possible to install a second hard drive, probably an SSD to run OS and programs, leaving the 1Tb HDD there as well using it mainly for storage.
If it's not recommended, than can you suggest a good SSHD as I don't want to have an external HD and would like to combine speed and storage capacity.
    Thanks.

You can't add an internal drive, but you can add as much storage as you want via Thunderbolt.

  • New 2014 iMac or refurb Late 2013 iMac?

Finally replacing my old iMac and read some conflicting reports on whether the latest refresh of 27" iMac were better or worse than the Late 2013 iMac. I will be getting the 3.4 with 1TB Fusion Drive. Does it matter or did they improve the latest revision.
It's not about the price, they are almost the same, it's about which is better.
    Thanks!

Well, the support pages/tech specs only show the late 2013 27" iMacs - there is none listed for this year. The only 2014 is a 21":
Apple - Support - Technical Specifications
Compare those specs to the store's listings of 27" and you'll find they're the same, so I'd suggest getting a refurb as you should save some money. My last 3 Mac purchases were all refurbs. Great deals.

  • How will Batman Arkham City work on my iMac 21.5 Late 2013?

Hi everybody, I have just bought an iMac for Christmas and I wanna know how will Batman Arkham City work on my computer. The especifications are this: 21.5, 2.7 i5, 8GB RAM and Iris Pro Graphics 1024 MB Late 2013. How will the game look compared with a PS3? And I am also worried because the are some people who say that gaming in an iMac like mines can damage it, is it true?
Thank You, and sorry for my English I am from Spain and I dont totally control the language.

According to a review written in Oct 2013, they cover several aspects of this year's iMac and go into graphics performance, where they said they tried a few tests and a few games. The game inquiry appeared to be given a satisfactory nod or affirmative here: http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/08/apple-imac-review-2013/ or coverage of recent specs here: http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/reviews/?reviewid=3470461
Since I didn't  look into Mactracker for Late 2013 specs to see when that version shipped, the numbers may have changed if 'Late' model was available after the October 2013 date of their review.
There also are a few other incidents of that game in use on iMacs of later vintage, as per search results: https://www.google.com/#q=Batman+Arkham+City+in+iMac+2013+model
Hopefully the game & the new iMac works out well for you.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Change startup chime volume

I wold like to selact a constant, low volume, level for the start-up "chime". I find that it chimes in at the volume of my shutdown activity, which might (for example) have been listening to loud music. So, my start-up can be noisy, to the irritation of others in the house at 5 a.m.
Is there a solution, to set a constant volume selection for the start-up chime?
    Thanks,
    RAJTO

System Preferences > Security > General > Gatekeeper to "Anywhere"
Go to Macupdate.com, install StartupSound preference pane, set to low volume (don't turn it off as you might need to hear the beeps one day)

  • Suddenly no startup chime on my iMac.

I remember having this odd behavior on my old Powerbook and I have forgotten if I managed to fix it or not.
When I restart or start up from cold, my computer no longer sounds the chime. It isn't a case of the internal speakers being cancelled by earphones plugged in since the chime always sounds with the internal speaker regardless of whether or not something is plugged into the earphone port.

The sound level ALWAYS goes down to half way when I restart. This is one of my pet peeves with Apple who, in their infinite wisdom have decided that all Mac users must be protected against themselves when wearing earphones or have hooked up their Macs to external speaker systems. So, even though I have the volume on my Mac turned up near full and my Logitech speakers turned to the half way level, my Mac volume control will always assume the intermediate position when I boot up (necessitating an adjustment every time I start up). Thanks Apple!
Anyhow, it appears I have solved the "no chime" problem by resetting PRAM. Doh! I should have remembered this before submitting my post.
