Lowering resolution on Dell E6510/Intel GM45HD

Not sure if this is the right forum... anyway, I seem to be unable to lower the resolution on my laptop screen from the default one of 1600x900 (I need to get it to 1024x768 to clone the output to a projector). Attaching an external monitor works fine, and I can choose between a range of resolutions for it. Some output from xrandr:
$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 2100, maximum 8192 x 8192
eDP1 connected 1600x900+0+1200 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm

1280x1024 75.0 60.0
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 60.0

HDMI2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
As per Arch Wiki, I tried manually creating and adding the folowing mode:
$ cvt 1024 768 60 -r
# 1024x768 59.87 Hz (CVT 0.79M3-R) hsync: 47.30 kHz; pclk: 56.00 MHz
Modeline "1024x768R" 56.00 1024 1072 1104 1184 768 771 775 790 +hsync -vsync
However, if I try to set eDP1 to this mode, the screen just goes black. Switching to a console terminal works, and
I can kill the X server by a keyboard shortcut. However, the screen remains black even if I try to switch back to
the "default" mode by a shell script:
#!/bin/bash
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1024x768R
sleep 2
xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1600x900
Any ideas?
Edit: forgot to repeat the info from the subject line: I'm running a Dell Latitude E6510 laptop, with integrated Intel GM45HD video.

  • Macbook pro stopped displaying full resolution on Dell U2713HM monitor

    Hey guys,
I'm using the late 2013" retina Macbook Pro with OSX Mavericks.
I've been using a Mini DP to DP cable to output full 2560 x 1440 on my 27" Dell U2713HM.
One day while I had that monitor plugged in, I also plugged in my HDTV via HDMI for an extra screen. When I did that, it set my Dell to 1080p and ever since then I cant seem to change the resolution back to its native res.
When I go to the display options for this monitor, under "Scaled Resolutions", the entire section is blank. It gives me nothing to choose from. I've restarted my computer a few times, plugged the cable into the other Thunderbolt port, nothing.
I've tried new cables and went to the Apple Store and they did a PRAM reset. It seemed to work fine when they hooked up a Thunderbolt display to it. But I just cant get my Dell to go full res again. I tried the first cable on another mac and a PC and both let me view it in full resolution. Just not my Mac.
Any advice? It makes no sense why it was working perfectly fine for a long time and then completely refuses to do so only on mine.

I have the same setup - late 2013 macbook pro with Dell u2713hm. I've tried connecting with both a mini dp cable to dp (as included with the dell monitor) and also a hdmi cable and I get a strange result - I get full resolution but it looks terrible - pixalated and faded.
I also have a macbook from around 2009 which I can connect using a dp-dvi adapter and then the dual dvi connector that came with the monitor. It gets a lower resolution but actually looks better.
Any ideas? Have you seen this issue with your setup (which seems the same as mine).
    Thanks,

  • Don't have 2560x1440 resolution on Dell U2711

    Hi,
I've recived the mac today and I have a monitor DELL U2711. The monitor is connected with an HDMI cable.
This is what I can set now.
Someone know what I can do to get 2560x1440 resolution?
    Thanks
    Ivan

you could try to option+click on "scale" to find out more options.
but i fear that won't solve the problem, at least this is my experience as I am in the same situation
It seems to be a problem of Mavericks. (Lion worked perfectly with the maximum resolution
Both my MBP and MacMini can't get 2560x1440 on the U2711. And yes @turbostar - with mini DP to DP.
All those work-arounds (reset PRAM, overwrite the overrides ...) don't help. So very, very VERY frustrating.
So if any ouf you finds the solution. please post here.

  • Best resolution for DELL S2409W to get accurate size

I am using a Dell S2409W connected to a 2011 Mac Mini by HDMI cable.
My problem is I can't seem to find a resolution setting that is accurate for size.
Set to 1080p it's displaying at approx 70% of the correct size
It's not ideal when working in illustrator and you zoom to 100% when designing a business card and it looks tiny on screen...
Can anyone help or is it just like this when using a Dell LCD screen

In Displays system preference, make sure Underscan is off.
In the Dell display's Color Settings, set Mode Selection to Graphics.

  • Dell D620-Intel 3945 + PEAP

Has anyone noticed an issue with Dell D620 Laptops using the Intel 3945 card and WinXP with regards to PEAP authenication (mschapv2)? We are migrating to a LWAPP enviroment, but current we have a large autonomous AP enviroment. We have a very mobile group of users that just received new laptops and ever since they have had random connections issues with the 3945Intel card. The laptop will go from full strengh to no strengh without even moving. At times the laptop even gets in a state where it requires a reboot in order to get authenictated. We have tried the newest Intel proset 11.1 and that doesn't seem to have resolved the issues. There is nothing in any logs to point to an issue. You can have an older laptop with an intel 2200card right next to it and not have these issues.

Ensure that you don't have 2 client connection managers enabled in your PC. For example, a Microsoft WzC and a ADU on the same pc will result in lot of connectivity issues. In such cases. disable one of these client utilities.

  • Resolution has dropped on Intel powermac

I was having trouble with my old non-Intel Power Mac G5, so I switched to an Intel G5 dual core 2.66 that I had hanging around.  It has an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 video card.  But using the same monitors as I did with the non-Intel, the resolution is not as good.  I have the same resolution settings on each monitor (1600X1200 on one, and 1920X1080 on the tv monitor)  But for some reason the resolution is clearly not as sharp.  I would appreciate any suggestions on what I might try to improve the resolution,  I am not sure what video card I had on the old non-intel but I think it was an ATI Radeon 9600 with only 128 memory.  I'm not a whiz at this stuff, but I would think the Intel would be an improvement...

hint: don't call it an "G5" Intel
One of the 7300GT ports is capable of higher resolution and the other is not.
Try switching the ports you are using.
Ideal would have been the Apple 5770 which was $250, and which works on all Mac Pro models but are gone, long gone.

  • How to get correct widescreen resolution on Dell 2005 FPW

    Hi all,
I am running a G4, 10.4.6, with a Rage128Pro card. I have a Dell 2005FPW widescreen as well, which the G4 won't quite recognize. It finds it as a display, but instead of running as a 1680x1050 as intended, it stretches 1280x1024 even though from what I can find online, the card should be able to support the widescreen res. The correct resolution does not show up in the display preferences list.
I can see the Dell in the displays menu using the top bar, but it is grayed out so I can't pick it.
Any suggestions? I need to do some graphics work on this setup and it will be quite tough with a stretched display.
    Thanks!
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I was afraid of that, since all the specs I could find on it varied and it sounds like there are many versions of the Rage 128 out there; who knows what I have? Any suggestions on what to go with or avoid? I do not do a lot of gaming; I just need a card that can handle this resolution for web and print design work.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Thinkpad W510 - trying to get 2560x1600 resolution on Dell wfp2007 using a W510

    Hi All,
I am looking at purchasing a W510. I have a Dell wfp2007 30" monitor that I would like to drive off of the W510, at the full 2560x1600 resolution.
The wfp2007 only has a Dual-Link Dvi - and the W510 comes with a DisplayPort. It would seem I need a DisplayPort to Dual Dvi cable to make this work.
    My questions to you:
    (1) Anyone have any experience getting 2560x1600 resolution with a w510 and a wfp2007?
    (2) Would I need to get the dock (even though the laptop itself has a DisplayPort - because of the extra power supply?)
    (3) Any other reccommendations for driving the wfp2007 with the w510 at 2560x1600?
Thank you very much for your help!!
    Meera

and search for threads by RonS
He posted some stuff about W510 and resolution limitations.  As I recall, the W510 has a DVI-I and won't support your resolution.
In regards to DisplayPort to DVI-D port on your monitor, one approach would be to by a powered DP to DVI converter.  Passive converts max out at a lower resolution, so make sure you get an active/powered box if you go this route.

  • Dell 1564 - Intel I5-M430 - Overheating issues, very slow performance

    Hi,
I have a dell 1564, with an I5 M430 cpu. I have cooling issues and as a result my CPU temperature peaks close to 90~95 degree Celsius sometimes on extended full cpu usage. In such situations , I cut down my usage , and manage to bring the temperature down back to reasnoble ranges of 60~75 degrees. However often in these situations even after cooling down, my cpu performance becomes very miserable. Normal browsing which usually uses 10~15% cpu show up as taking 80~90% cpu (as per top/ and other process monitors). I ran the "N-Queens" benchmark from  hardinfo show drastically reduced performance. Post overheating the benchmark takes 35s, after a reboot it takes only 7seconds. I'm trying to track down the reason for this but can't seem to figure out what's the issue. Can someone help me out in this? I'm basically looking for a solution where I don't have to reboot every time I cross the temperature threshold just to get normal CPU performance again. Ideally if its downclocking somehow I'm hoping that it should reset back normally after temperature returns to normal ranges.
    Stuff I've tried:
    * dmesg : No new messages added during/after the overheating
    * cpu scaling : cpu frequency reported by /proc/cpuinfo are back to the normal 2.26 GHz which is my peak scaling. Also I've tried all scaling governors , and even locking the frequency to 2.26GHz , doesn't seem to bring back the performance.
    * suspending and resuming , in hopes of reseting any CPU modes. No luck, CPU still in bad performance. Only a reboot fixes it.

The one thing that sticks out is Firefox is using an excessive amount of CPU resources.  Delete Firefox and see if there is an improvement.

  • Installing tonight - Dell D830 - Intel Integrated Video/Dell Wireless

    Hi,
I am going to install tonight and I am "ok" with linux.  I am tired of all the "one in all solutions", especially when they never work as intended..
I wanted to ask about a couple items, and I have the guide all printed out to go.
    1.  It appears my video will be fine from what I have read, does anyone have any advice in terms of how to configure xorg.conf and at what point I add in my graphical choice?
    2.  Is KDEMOD the best option for arch?  It looks good, I tried to install Chakra today but the disk kept failing on the partitioning so I am not sure what was going on.
    3.  Wireless - it looks like I need the fwcutter firmware and have to update the drivers.  I would like to use wireless as quickly as possible after my install.  Is there a way to get that going asap or only until I have it installed and onine?
    Any other "gotcha's" about installing?
    THX!!!:D

1.) My advice: don't bother with xf86-video-intel, go straight for xf86-video-intel-legacy. The new one just isn't worth the hassle. Plus, I've actually read that xf86-video-intel-legacy is faster (I don't know if this is true or not, though).
2.) The best choice is whatever works best for you. You should be able to find plenty of debates on which DE is the best. Usually the arguments are KDE vs. GNOME, but Xfce often comes into the mix, and occasionally you might see mention of Enlightenment. LXDE is also worth checking out.
Anyway, if you think KDEMOD might be what you want, go ahead and try it out! It's easy enough to replace if you decide you don't like it. When people ask me what DE to use, I usually recommend Xfce.
3.) I'm sorry, I can't help you there. I run Arch on my desktop, so I don't use wireless. I'm not even sure what you're asking, though.
    Any other "gotcha's" about installing?
I recommend having another computer available while you're installing, in case you're not sure what to do next, and need to ask or something.
Good luck, and welcome to the community.

  • Nesting Footage lowers resolution.

I have been nesting footage in a UHD timeline so i can use warp stabilizer in different resolution timelines and also move certain parts of timelines into other sequences and keep them tidy. I noticed when I nest the resolution looks compressed. Is this something that is fixed with exporting or how can this be fixed...the point of nesting seems useless if it is pre compressing. Please advise.

So sorry, I guess my shorthand isn't always clear.
To answer your first question, no, Nesting should not decrease the quality of the footage.
In your second question you say that the nest (nested clips) causes the image to be "clipped" (aka cropped) when you decrease the scale of the nest.
Most of the time you create a nest by highlighting one or more clips in an existing sequence and right-clicking to select Nest..., by default this creates a nest with the same image size as the original sequence. If you scale a nest that is the same image size as the sequence (i.e. 1920 x 1080 nest in a 1920 x 1080 sequence), it will show black edges when scaled smaller than 100%.
To avoid this cropping, your nest must be a larger image size than the sequence you're placing it in. Placing a 3840 x 2160 nest into a 1920 x 1080 sequence will allow you to reduce the scale to 50% before revealing the edges of the nest. A nest is simply an independent sequence placed inside another sequence. To get an independent sequence that is a different image size than the sequence you're working on, you can drag a higher resolution file to the New Item icon, or right-click on the higher resolution file, and select New Sequence From Clip (let's name it 'Nest 1'). Build and modify Nest 1 as desired and when ready, drag the Nest 1 icon from the Project window into the (original) sequence that you were working on. If necessary, double check to make sure Nest 1 inside your original sequence is not set to Scale to Frame Size by right-clicking on the Nest 1 in the sequence.
I hope this helps a little more.

What is the max resolution supported by the intel hd 4000 graphics driver found on the 13in MacBook Pro for EXTERNAL monitors?

OK so after doing much research... this seems to be the best workflow.
Bring HDV in to FCP as ProRes 422.
Edit show... add bells and whistles, etc.
    Export movie as ProRes 422.
Then for the client - ensure that they have latest version of Quicktime and download the Apple ProRes Quicktime Decoder (for mac or Windows). (It is assumed they have a decent computer to play back on.)
The client will then be able to play a movie encoded as proRes 422 and all will be happy.
As a back up a high resolution h264 file can't hurt.
Thanks for everyones input. We got there in the end.
