LPTI redirect in Virtual WIndows XP mode using WIndows 7 Pro

I have an application that only prints to LPT1. The application only can run on XP so I installed it on Virtual Windows XP mode. The application works ok but I cannot print. The printer I have is a USB printer that is installed on Windows 7 Pro and I am
able to share that printer in XP mode. In the past when the application was installed on a dedicated XP Pro operating system, I was able to get the application to print to my USB printer by using the NET USE LPT1 command.
My problem now is how to I get the application installed on Virtual Windows XP mode to be directed to the shared USB printer on Windows 7 Pro when it is looking for LPT1
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
XP Mode does not have access to parallel ports so the DOS command to use LPT1 within XP Mode will fail, have you checked this link?

  • What plug in do I need to open files in virtual pc xp mode on windows 7?

I am unable to open CS 2 In Design files in virtual pc xp
mode on windows 7 - even tho it says I should be able to.
It says under 'content manager' check for the right plug ins

What plug in do I need?
Or should I send windows 7 professional with xp mode back??

More than likely these are CS3 or later files and the latest version you have installed is CS2. Without a newer icon handler from a more recent version, the CS2 icon will be displayed for anything newer than CS, and Windows itself has no clue that any version of ID other than the last one installed is associated with the file type.
As Jongware points out, this is the typical error for trying to open a newer version file.

experiencing the same issues you are describing on what appears to be the same model of computer.  Can anyone provide additional information on applying the suggested hotfix?
@Rick Dee - After installing both XP mode and Virtual PC service pack on the computer XP mode appears in the list of Virtual Machines.  After running through the initial set up of the VM (Windows XP Mode) listed in ~/<user>/virtual machines, the
setup of the VM fails with the error, "cannot complete windows setup".
I use a vhd that I deploy to all my client computers to run XP mode.  I have deployed this vhd on at least 5 other laptops with the same specs from the same manufacturer.  On this particular machine though, when I tried to deploy this vhd, the
vm just hangs.  So I have been trying to install the distributed copy of Windows XP mode from Microsoft.  When I do this, I get the error.

  • Will Let's Edit run on Windows XP mode in Windows 7?

I just purchsed an iMac and I want to load Windows 7 Professional onto it as well. We own the full version of Edius 5 but have not tried learning that program yet. I don't know if Edius 5 will run on Windows 7 but if I can still use Let's Edit I'll be in business for now. I read some information on running Windows XP mode on Windows 7 and I see that a special processer is needed in order to run this. Do you have any idea if my new iMac will support the Windows XP mode? Any help you can provide me will be extremely benefecial to me.
Also, where and how can i acquire the legacy OCHI firewire driver for my video card? As i mentioned, this will be on a new model iMac so will I still need this driver to be installed seperately? Why is it that the default driver installed by Windows 7 will not allow me to capture or output video?
What I am trying to ultimately avoid at this point is having to load an outdated Windows XP OS onto my brand new iMac that utilizes 64 bit hardware and software. I will greatly appreciate any further help you can provide me.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Some basics.
VMs are virtual machines. They run inside or under or side by side (same thing, just what people call it) and your Mac will run Windows and this application just peachy - perfect for anything except games.
Running Windows as Windows is also called running Windows natively (directly on the hardware, versus running in one of those VMs), is also called a dual boot: boot Mac OS -- or you boot Windows.
VMware Fusion: Install Windows via Boot CAmp (native, on its own hardware), but / and, you can also then use Fusion (which is a VM) inside Mac OS when you want; or, you can boot and run Windows natively.
XP Mode requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in the system board bios (that is EFI or actually UEFI, that Macs use). On a PC you have to enable it in BIOS as it is off by default usually.
It 'should' be enabled. Separate from 64-bit hardware. And separate from your UEFI firmware which is also 64-bit. But the Mac Pro found itself with VT-d off after an Apple Security Update. Go figure.
XP Mode is really just hardware VM. And using Sun (now Oracle) VirtualBox VM (free) is easy.
A VM just does not benefit from 64-bit, unless you need to allocate say 4-6GB RAM in your VM, and your app definitely does not.
Pro version is what MS sells or offers to education institutions.
Is needed for more backup options, XP Mode, dual processor (Mac Pro).
Download and play with VirtualBox and Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.
I have Pro and Ultimate on two systems.

  • Can't get Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 to fill 27" screen

I successfully installed Windows XP Mode on my Windows 7 OS running in Boot Camp and it works but the XP VM doesn't fill the 27" screen when I expand it to Full Screen. I get black bars on the left and right side of the XP OS, the top and bottom are filled. I checked the settings on the Display control panel in XP and there are no choices other than the default setting. Does anyone know what to change to make Virtual PC running XP in Windows 7 fill my 27" iMac screen? (That's a mouth full).

    Good evening -
Thanks for the response. I loaded drivers from CD.  I want to keep the operating system on the 80 GIG ATA drive and use the SATA RAID for programs.  The drives show up in the device manager and in the VIA RAID utility that came with the motherboard but I can't see or access them through My Computer.  I have tried to set up the RAID through both the Windows software and through the Boot program, but no luck.  When I tried to update the drivers from the floppy it said no newer drivers found. (I tried to update drivers through the Device manager.)  Also when I deleted the raid and tried to set up the drives individually the same thing happened.  Is it possible I don't have the BIOS set up correctly? I am at a loss.

  • Windows XP Mode on Windows 7

Is it normal to have a Windows XP Mode folder in a Windows 7 Pro, Program Files Directory?
I see this key: K49H2-RPR94-QBGG4-DBCTM-YT64G. And I see the
VXPEULA.txt file with EULA. Window XP Mode has never intentionally, or knowingly, been installed.
I also see Windows XP Mode base.vhd file that, by looking at properties, seems to be a virtual machine hard drive image.
I just noticed this is in the wrong thread but not sure how to move it.

It looks like it should show up in Programs and Features to uninstall.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee431673(v=ws.10).aspx
    To remove Windows XP Mode
If Windows XP Mode is running, shut it down.
    Open Control Panel.
Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
    Double-click Windows XP Mode.
Also, I am unable to remove the virtual machine because it does not exist under any of the User names. Additionally, when I search for the extensions, I do not find anything.
    To delete a virtual machine
If the virtual machine is running, shut it down or turn it off.
If you want to delete the virtual hard disks, open the settings for the virtual machine and note the location of all virtual hard disks.
From the Virtual Machines folder, right-click the name of the virtual machine and then click Delete. The virtual machine is removed from the folder and the virtual machine
(.vmcx) file is moved to the Recycle Bin.
Open Windows Explorer and browse to the location where the virtual machine files are stored. For example, the default location for virtual machine files is the following, where username is
the name of your Windows 7 user account:%systemdrive%\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines
Look for and delete files that are named the same as the virtual machine and have the following extensions: .vmc, .vmc, .vpcbackup, .vsv, .vht, and .vud. You also can search for files with
    those extensions.
That seems a bit odd. And lastly, when I attempt to remove Windows Virtual PC, it does not exist in the installed updates.
    To remove Windows Virtual PC
    Open Control Panel.
Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
In the left pane, click View installed updates.
Under Microsoft Windows, double-click Windows Virtual PC (KB958559).
Restart the computer to finish the removal.

  • Skype for Windows Desktop should use Windows Desktop Scaling

Skype for Windows Desktop should use Windows Desktop Scaling.  Right now, on Windows 8.1 with high DPI displays, Skype scales very badly.  It is either very blurry with scaling turned on or is too small to see when scaling turned off.  This negatively affects not just SMS and IM but also webcams. Since Skype is a Microsoft product it should follow the Microsoft guidelines for desktop scaling, even if it is not a Windows 8.1 specific application.  There are a multitude of other applications, like Firefox and Internet Explorer, that work perfectly with desktop scaling.  Skype should do this, too.

I see this thread is over a year old and still no fix for this issue. Just 'upgraded' from old Vista laptop to new hi res Asus N551 with Windows 8.1 and Skype Desktop looks crap! Blurry fonts and pictures, webcam image terrible. In short a disgrace. I hate the kiddies version on Windows 'Metro' style app by the way. So, looked up support and only solution suggested was to retore my custom desktop scaling option back to 100%. Obviously I am not doing that otherwise I would be unable to read the resultant microscopic text in Windows 8.1. So if anyone does have another, workable, solution I be pleased to hear it.After over a year though the Skype team really should make scaling for Skpe Deskto a No. 1 priority.

  • Install Instructions for Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 running in Boot Camp

These are the instructions I used to install Windows XP Mode on my 27" iMac while booted into Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on the Boot Camp partition, I posted them in a reply to another thread but thought they might be useful as a higher level topic.
Reboot into Windows 7 on your iMac and follow these instructions:
    1. Download and install Windows XP mode from the following Microsoft website. You do not need an XP installation disk, XP will be installed automatically by this process (there are three links to click, in order, to install this. The site will perform a Windows Genuine Advantage check and you may need to make sure your browser allows certain items or the install will stall until you do, look for warnings or permissions during installation in the menu bar of the browser):
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
    2. After you complete the 3rd installation step, check your Start menu in Windows 7 and look for Windows Virtual PC. Open it and double click Windows XP Mode (it should be the only thing in there) to boot up XP.
    3. You can adjust the amount of RAM you allocate to XP mode by going to the Start Menu --> Windows Virtual PC again, then right click on Windows XP Mode, then choose Settings.
It works great but I can't get it to fill my 27" screen in full screen mode, let me know if you figure out how to do that. --thanks

  • Measure performance of windows 8 machines using windows Performance Toolkit (WPR tool)

I want to create performance baseline for windows 8 machines(like time to winlogon, time to desktop and total boot time etc.). For this I used windows performance toolkit - WPR tool to record or log performance data(using boot scenario) into log file(.etl). I
opened generated ETL file using WPA(windows performance analyzer), in processes section, always I am able to see winlogon.exe and explorer.exe  time more than 2 minutes on different machines. when I did it for windows XP(using xperf) machine
winlogon.exe always showing as less than 30  seconds.
Can you please let me know, how I can get correct data for following tasks using WPR tool:
    1) Time to Winlogon(winlogon.exe)
    2) Time to Desktop(explorer.exe )
    3) Total Boot time
    4) Time to Outlook Start
    5) Time to Full Outlook Load

  • Virtual Machine( VM WARE) using Windows Server 2008 R2- how to install a software from host to guest.

    Dear All,
Can you Please tell how to install a software SQL Server 2012 from the Host to my Guest OS Windows Server 2008R2 in my Virtual Machine? I am using VMPlayer and have already created a VM using the Windows Server 2008R2.
I just need help in installing another software (SQLServer2012) from my laptop(guest computer) to my host VM. I also have the files downloaded into my C drive of my laptop(hostcomputer) for the SQL Server 2012. But I am lost as to where to click to install
    this software to my VM.
I know I put into  Windows Server 2012 forum but I thin the procedure should be similar.
    Thank-you

    there are few options,
you can copy the files from your host to virtual machine
you can create a iso file and mount it to vm
you can share the source files and access as a share

  • HT1338 Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC software inside Windows 7 Pro inside Parallels 8 inside Mountain Lion running on a Mac Pro built in 2013?

I wanted to ask if anyone using a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion, Parallels 8, and Windows 7 Pro could run XP Mode?
My experience has not been encouraging in that I progress to the end of the final mile, that is configuring XP Mode for first use, then an error message appears saying I should try again, that is I should attempt to configure XP Mode again for the first time use.  An endless loop, with no visibility into the nature of my configuration failure.
I understand my problem is a narrowly focused, microsoft-centric issue, however, I would imagine this XP behavioral Mode running inside Windows 7 Pro is a common goal for many users, so I thought this question was reasonable to ask our group.
    Please advise, and thank you.

    Hello FatMac,
I wanted to let you know that your "requires a patch" feedback looked--at first--like the piece of the puzzle I was missing.  Turned out, however, when I downloaded the 64 bit version of the patch, then attempted to install it under Windows 7 Pro, my installation was first searched, then my patch installation returned a message saying this patch was not applicable to my system. (BTW:my Windows 7 install is 64 bit) This failure to install surprised me because, based on an earlier evaluation for hardware virturalization support, my MacPro does not have virturalization hardware support.  I mean, based on this no hardware support feedback, and based on the nature of this patch, it looked as if the patch should install and set my problem right.
Nevertheless, the patch won't install, and I don't know a way to query or coerce it.  I'm approaching the point of diminishing returns with this problem.  I have two applications (Adobe Illustrator 10 and Framemaker 7.0) which will run, but they don't behave properly, under Windows 7.  BTW: I did make somewhat extensive use of the Windows compatibility tool early on, but nevertheless, FrameMaker 7 simply quits at the worst possible moment, and Illustrator 10 graphics are very often blank black areas where pallettes should be.
Thanks again for your thoughts and help.  I believed we were heading down the right track, but for reasons not visible to me, (the user), the patch that should fix this problem will not install...
If there is any saving grace to this situation, my problem is repeatable.  I mean, it's not on-again/off-again.  When I attempt to configure XP Mode for its first use, the progress bar turns red at the final second, then complains that it could not complete its setup.  Please Try Again recouts its final advice.  (Famous words marking the beginning of an endless loop:-)
Were it not for Illustrator and FrameMaker, I would not have taken us down this dark road.
So long for now, and hope to talk to you all again soon...

  • Cisco VPN and Microsoft Virtual PC (xp mode under Windows 7)

Bridged networking is what VMWare calls it and it works basically the
same as the way you don't like here. The guest will interact with the
NIC on the host and from the outsie it will present a second channel
with a different MAC address. This channel will acquire an IP address
of its own from the DHCP server.
But no matter what you do, the host and guest will NEVER EVER get the
    same IP address!
Additionally, Cisco VPN by design will shut down ALL other network
interfaces when it connects the tunnel so the computer running Cisco
VPN will be effectively disconnected from the local network and
INSTEAD connected to the remote network. You cannot share this VPN
tunnel to another local computer and this includes the host.
