LR 1.3 Grid View Pixelation
Guys,
I have recently upgraded to 1.3 from 1.2 on a new 2.8Ghz imac with 4GB running 10.5.1 using LR and I have noticed that the grid view in library mode shows pictures heavily pixelated for a few seconds when I scroll the grid view. After a few seconds the view is corrected as expected.
I do not recall this problem with 1.2 and I was wondering if something has changed in 1.3 or if I need to do some extra step to get back to the snappy LR grid view that I remember.
Also, has the 'discard previews after 30 days' option been dropped from LR now? I remember it in 1.0 but cannot find it anymore.
Any advice appreciated. Love the program!

I'm rendering 1:1 previews at present, but even wit that going on in the background the scrolling isn't to bad when I put my Logictech Performance mouse scroll wheel in to free spin mode. The video shows free wheel scrolling when mouse is placed over grid, over the scrollbar and lastly slow scrolling. In the video I scroll through just over 20,000 images. The display is 30inch.
That looks somewhat better than I'm seeing, but still pretty terrible. Lots of jumping, not much smooth scrolling. LR 2.x performed much better than that on my old, slow hardware.

Blurry images when zooming in Survey & Grid View
When I am in Survey View and hit the Z key, some of the previews are blurry. The same thing happens in Grid View. However, in Loupe View, the images are fine when I the 'Z' key. Using Survey View would make things go faster when making my picks. Any ideas why this happens?
I tried rendering 1:1 but the returns a mesage that says renders are up to date and rendering was done.cppasm wrote:
This is definitely a bug. I can see it too, and it's little bit annoying. LR 4.1, Win7 x64.
To reproduce just select two images, render 1:1 previews to be shure they are present.
Then press 'N' to switch to Survey mode, and now press 'Z' to zoom in active photo.
It gets zoomed, but looks like LR zooms in standard (smaller) preview instead of using 1:1 preview - the result is blurry and a little pixelated, it definitely lacks resolution.
But when in the Loupe view (switch view using 'E') and zooming all work just fine - the image is at full resolution and is sharp.
And even if I switch from Survey to Loupe with zoomed in image - it still stays blurry.
To get sharp image I need to zoom out and then zoom in again.
So in short - it looks like 1:1 preview is used only when image is zoomed in from the Loupe view.
At least others seem to experience the same thing so I know it's not just me. I'd say it's more than a little bit annoying because it causes you to second guess yourself and you constantly have to switch to a view to see if the image is actually sharp or not. It really slows down the workflow. -
Seriously someone please tell me how to get rid of these rounded corners in grid view. I can handle a subtle curve on the corners but these are 32x32 pixel curves on every corners. Any bigger and I'll be browsing album artwork circles in grid view. The white background is annoying enough but this is about to make me ditch the program.
What I propose is the bottom of each thumbnail. Because the size of the thumbnail is variable mixed, possibly, with a 3 or 4 line word wrap this space would be more then enough for many users. Alternately, a new grid view with one photo on the left side coupled with extensive metadata on the right would enable quick views of keywords/metadata. Other programs such as acdsee pro have implemented similar functionality which I have found extremely valuable. The ability, at quick glance, to see how photos have been tag will greatly increase the efficiency of tagging. I agree that many users may find the function limiting, but they dont have to use it.

Loupe and Grid view rendering not as good as Develop view.
I recently see that while using LR 5.6 the images rendered in the loupe and grid views do not look nearly as good as the same image displayed in the develop view. I have screen grabs if you'd like to see them below. The Loupe and grid are not as saturated and the gradient in the sky is not nearly as smooth. If I bounce between 'E' and 'D' it is pretty obvious. Once in a while the 'E' (loupe) view looks the same. I'm afraid that I will delete an image based on what I see in the Loupe or do unnecessary edits on an image. When I exported to jpg, the images looked pretty good.
Grid:
Loupe:
Develop:As far as what could be contributing to a difference, other than an actual bug:
LR Previews are stored as AdobeRGB JPGs, so Library previews go from LR-Internal color profile to AdobeRGB to Display color profile, whereas Develop previews go directly from LR-Internal color profile to Display color profile. If there are some colors that are outside of AdobeRGB then some conversion may occur. The conversion to 8-bit JPG is also probably adding banding that Develop wouldn’t show. There might also be Relative vs Perceptual color profile conversion differences occurring. I don’t know the specifics of which is used for the Adobe color profile conversion and whether what you’re seeing is outside the expected variations.
If you view at less than 1:1/100% zoom, especially with Fit or Fill, then small details that vary across the group of original image pixels that are displayed as one display pixel can be averaged differently due to differences in the downsampling algorithms used between computing Library file previews and computing Develop display previews where Develop’s is built for speed because it occurs in real-time after every slider movement, where Library previews are computed in the background and so can use a more accurate resampling algorithm. Usually this is only a difference in sharp/smoothness but it can also manifest as a difference in tone if there are lots of tiny noise spots getting averaged together inaccurately in Develop or more accurately in Library.
Since I can see only a tiny difference between Library and Develop on my monitor in this particular example, I can't imagine that small difference is enough to reject the Library version and accept the Develop version. Maybe you're seeing others with more differences? -
Grid View: Meant to be squared
I just noticed this while looking into other’s issues with Grid View. Apparently, if you have album covers that are not square they will not be rendered as well in Grid View when sorted by artist; I would guess the issue would also occur if you browse by composer.
All of my cover art are scans from my CDs. The standard size of my cover art is 300x300 pixels for covers from standard jewel boxes and 300x264 for Digipak or slim jewel case releases that have more rectangular covers. Apparently, the images shown in the browse by artist (and composer) Grid views are in fixed “buttons” so any image that is not a square looks as if it is sitting (letterbox-style) atop a black button. Rendering in the browse by album mode is not affected in this way; the image just has a thin bevel and subtle shadow rendering applied, as opposed to the image being superimposed upon a graphic object.Trephination wrote:
Personally, I would rather this than distorting the image.
Neither would I.
Trephination wrote:
If it bothers you, you can set other images as default grid artwork. Choose Get Info whilst on the grid view and you can paste in artwork which it will use as a default.
It does not bother me, it was something that I just noticed while looking over the Grid View to answer someone else’s questions. -
I installed LR 1.0, and imported photos from Photoshop Elements 5.0.2. The previews in grid view (both normal and extended cells) are updating every time I scroll the view, or start LR. It mean that first I see preview with ugly (pixelated) quality, after 2-5 seconds in better quality, and after that in god quality. When I scroll the grid down and up to see the photo, it updates. And it takes some time, especially when I have a lots of photos.
How can it be solved?
WinXP, 768mb RAM, ~7000 photos in library, in PSE it works fine
Thank youPierre,
Your suggestion probably right in general, but costs money and will not help in this particular case.
Described behaviour is "by design".
All we can do - is to ask Adobe again and again to implement caching and storing of high-quality thumbnails on-the-fly, as other DAMs do. -
Artworks does not appear in List and Grid view, but in Cover Flow
Since a few days the Artwork does neither appear in the List and the Grid View nor in the Genius Mix. When I change to Cover Flow, I can see all Artwork. I see all Artwork also in the information tabs. I already upgraded to the last iTunes version 9.0.2 but without any effect. Restarting iTunes and my PC doesn't help at as well.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem is and how it can be solved?Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
A completely blank Cover Flow can sometimes be a graphics driver problem but if Grid & List views have problems then it is probably a corrupted artwork cache. With iTunes closed rename the *Album Artwork* folder as *Album Artwork (OLD)*. Start iTunes and slowly scroll through your library in Grid mode. The cache will be rebuilt for all albums where there is embedded art. Albums that only had iTunes Store art will need to have new artwork downloaded. If all goes well delete the old artwork folder.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them you can try http://www.stum.de/itunes-find-tracks-without-artwork/ for Windows or http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=trackswithoutartwork for Macs. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus.

LR1 slow to display clear thumbnails in grid view
I'm still using LR1 (1.4.1)
My setup:
-quadcore Intel, @2.8 Ghz
-Vista x64 SP1
-8GB ram
-LR install on OS disk
-system page file, and LR catalog and previews installed on a raid0 (stripe) pair of disks
-Photos themselves on yet another disk
-All disks are SATA2
-Selected all photos in the catalog, and saved metadata
-The write xmp on change flag is unchecked
-I optimized my catalog
-I removed the previews directory, selected all photos in the catalog (16K) and did a generate 1:1 preview (2048 pixel, high quality, never delete them), and I also did a generate standard previews as well.
-I turned off Vista indexing of the previews directory and the photos directory
-I don't have a dedicated Virus scanner running
Work flow:
I chose a day's worth of photos from the navigator on the left, and set a keyword in the keyword "spraycan". I start scrolling (with the mouse wheel) down through the grid.
Issue:
right off the bat it takes about 2 seconds or so for the thumbnails to become clear - they start off quite pixelated. I start "spraying" photos with my keyword. I scroll down to the next page full of thumbnails. It takes another 2 sometimes a bit more seconds before I can see what's in the thumbnails (until they sharpen). It doesn't sound like a big deal, but when I have a lot of keywords to add, I really want to be able to scan quickly through the patch of photos and quickly tag them. That 2 seconds each time I scroll really starts to drag.
I with that LR would be able to in the backround sharpen the thumbnails in the Grid, so that when I scroll they are ready for me. Or perhaps I'm missing something with my optimization or configuration?
Thanks for listening,
DamoniTunes will need to load all of your artwork when using cover flow and grid view. There IS a cache folder in the Album Artwork folder of iTunes, but i don't know how effective that is.
However, if you are running a version earlier than 9.2, iTunes 9.2 runs cover flow and grid view A LOT faster than previous versions, since what it does is create thumbnail versions of your images for those views only, making those views operate a heck of a lot quicker.
I know 9.2 still has some bugs and some people may advise against it, but if you really want to see a boost of performance with grid view I'd recommend updating if you haven't already. Besides, for any bugs there, Apple will probably release fixes for them shortly. -
Hi there,
I am a beginner in Visual Basic Express 2010. I have a Point of Sale program that uses DataGridView to display records from an external microsoft access
database using the fillby query.
It works, but it repopulates the same row each time, but i want to be able to display multiple records at the same time, a new row should be filled for
each click of the fillby button.
also I want to be able to delete any records if the customer suddenly decides to not buy an item after it has already been entered.
so actually 2 questions here:
1. how to populate a new row for each click of the fillby button
2. how to delete records from data grid view after an item has been entered
Thanks
VishwasHello,
The FillBy method loads data according to what the results are from the SELECT statement, so if there is one row then you get one row in the DataGridView, have two rows then two rows show up.
Some examples
Form load populates our dataset with all data as it was defined with a plain SELECT statement. Button1 loads via a query I created after the fact to filter on a column, the next button adds a new row to the existing data. When adding a new row it is appended
to the current data displayed and the primary key is a negative value but the new key is shown after pressing the save button on the BindingNavigator or there are other ways to get the new key by manually adding the row to the backend table bypassing the Adapter.
The following article with code shows this but does not address adapters.
Conceptually speaking the code in the second code block shows how to get the new key
Public Class Form1
Private Sub StudentsBindingNavigatorSaveItem_Click(
sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles StudentsBindingNavigatorSaveItem.Click
Me.Validate()
Me.StudentsBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TableAdapterManager.UpdateAll(Me.MyDataSet)
End Sub
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'TODO: This line of code loads data into the 'MyDataSet.Students' table. You can move, or remove it, as needed.
Me.StudentsTableAdapter.Fill(Me.MyDataSet.Students)
End Sub
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Me.StudentsTableAdapter.FillBy(Me.MyDataSet.Students, ComboBox1.Text)
End Sub
Private Sub Button2_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Me.MyDataSet.Students.AddStudentsRow("Jane", "Adams", "Female")
End Sub
End Class
Get new key taken from
this article.
Public Function AddNewRow(ByVal sender As Customer, ByRef Identfier As Integer) As Boolean
Dim Success As Boolean = True
Try
Using cn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection With {.ConnectionString = Builder.ConnectionString}
Using cmd As New OleDb.OleDbCommand With {.Connection = cn}
cmd.CommandText = InsertStatement
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@CompanyName", sender.CompanyName)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ContactName", sender.ContactName)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ContactTitle", sender.ContactTitle)
cn.Open()
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
cmd.CommandText = "Select @@Identity"
Identfier = CInt(cmd.ExecuteScalar)
End Using
End Using
Catch ex As Exception
Success = False
End Try
Return Success
End Function
In closing I have not given you a solution but hopefully given you some stuff/logic to assist with this issue, if not perhaps I missed what you want conceptually speaking.

Why does iTunes grid view not remember default sort settings?
Hello,
I am using iTunes 8.1 and I like to use the Grid view (Artists). Using the Grid view and clicking on an artist to look at the albums, I like to sort the albums within using "Album by Year".
Once I have made this change, it sticks until I close iTunes, so I can go into any other artist from Grid view and the albums will be listed using "Album by Year" automatically.
When I restart iTunes and click on an artist in grid view, iTunes has reverted to sorting via the first column, the one with track numbers. I then have to manually click "Album by Year" to get it sorted again.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if there is a solution to it? This also happened in iTunes before I upgraded to 8.1.
ThanksUnfortunately, I can't offer any solution because I'm experiencing the same kind of trouble. Please help us! It would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Slow-to-load album covers in Grid View
I've encountered a problem for a while that I thought I might bring up...
Whenever I start iTunes, it defaults to Grid View, the only view I use when browsing iTunes. Now, I'm unsure if iTunes caches album art or not, but every time I boot it up and scroll down, all of my albums appear artless for half a second before slowly applying the album art. This makes scrolling down incredibly slow and clunky.
Once I fully scroll down, I can scroll smoothly all I want, but if I close iTunes, everything is clunky again. Any tips? Does iTunes not cache album art?iTunes will need to load all of your artwork when using cover flow and grid view. There IS a cache folder in the Album Artwork folder of iTunes, but i don't know how effective that is.

How can I compare two collections at the same time? (View two grid views)
I have two collections containing some of the same images. (My Nikon D70 did not put an end-of-file on some images. I recovered them into a different collection.) Now I want to display both collections side-by-side in grid view. I will select those images in the "recovered" collection that correspond to the bad images in the "main" collection, add the ratings etc, and move just these to another collection.
It is extremely frustrating to have to bounce back and forth between collections, remembering each image one by one and selecting it in the "recovered" collection. (The image names are not preserved in the "recovered" collection -- I have to go by what the image looks like.)
LightRoom allows me to compare photos in the compare view. I want to compare collections in two grid views.CaptureTheLight,
you have ran into a situation when you have to compare two sets of images and now you're wondering how come Lightroom doesn't have such "obviously necessary" functionality? But you have to admit it, this is not such a common situation in a photographer's workflow recovers broken files and tries to compare them against themselves. I think it's a pretty specific feature you need. Still, Lightroom has enough powerful tools for editing and sorting images.
For example...
You could just put them all - "main" and "recovered" - into a single collection or into the Quick Collection. Label the entire "recovered" collection with, say, red and sort by capture time. Now you'll have everything side by side, ordered chronologically. The "recovered" images will stay next to the "main" images since their capture time will be the same, and they will also stand out since they have the red label.
Make the thumbnails bigger and set up the grid view so it tints the thumbnail cell are tinted with the label color. Now, you can go quickly through them visually checking labeled vs unlabeled. -
File name not showing in grid view
I just upgraded to LR 5.4 and I noticed that now when I am in grid view, only the capture date and dimensions show on the image when I run my cursor over it. I used to get a quick pop-up with the file name, capture date & dimensions, so I can quickly see where I am in my numbering system. I have looked at the preferences and also in view, but it is not apparent to me where it went, plus I know I didn't change anything, intentionally.
BTW, I also upgraded to Mavericks OS on my iMac, but I hope that is not what is wrong. I know Adobe put out a bunch of "patches" for Bridge, etc. but I have already downloaded and updated all that.When you are in Library module/Grid mode, the text that appears in the hovering action is controlled by the Info Overlay. The Info Overlay has three states: Off, Info 1 and Info 2.
Go to View>Loupe Overlay and put a check mark next to the Overlay you wish to be active and your hovering enabled text will change to match that text.
