LR 1.3 Mac not Importing JPGS with RAWs

I'm trying to import both RAWs and JPEGS at the same time and LR 1.3 is not doing so well. With previous versions I was able to import both a raw file (converting it to DNG in the importing) and bring along the accompanying JPEG (as a sidecar) at the same time. Now, 1.3 is no longer doing that. I can either import a RAW file only, or treat the additional JPEG as a separate image. This is no good. I need to import both RAW and JPEG at the same time and have LR rename the files (both RAW and JPEG) with the same names. What happened?

Yeah. I've double checked this several times. When I used to import as DNGs, I would get the JPGs copied into the folder that I designated and, in LR, the name above the thumbnail would be something like "D80_0001.dng+JPEG." So, I know that whatever I was able to do then is broken now.
The only solution I can come up with is several (tedious) steps:
1 - Import NEFs as DNGs. This I can do by turning off the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" in the Prefs. When the Import box opens, it shows only the NEFs. Then I start importing.
2 - Go back to the Prefs and turn the above feature on again.
3 - Go back to Import and select all the JPGs from amongst the JPGs and NEFs in the folder. Then import them into the same folder the DNGs were imported to. This way, the JPGs can have the same name as their DNG counterparts.
4- Go back into the LR library and open the folder with all the images and selectively delete all the JPGs from the library. You see, I don't want the JPGs in the library; I just want the RAW files. But I do want the JPGs and RAW files stored together on my hard drive.
Please, can this be fixed. This has put a serious crimp into my workflow. You know what it's like to have to selectively choose JPGs from NEFs in a folder containing 900+ images!?

  • Any way to NOT import JPEGs with RAWs?

When I import RAW files from my camera, Aperture imports the JPEG images as well but keeps it hidden from view. I dug into the Aperture Vault to check out what was going on, and it stores the 4-5 MB JPEG alongisde each RAW file. I can't see the reason for this. I'm not interested in these crappy JPEGs and they are just taking up room on my hard drive. Is there any way to get Aperture to not import the JPEGs when importing RAW files?

    step 1 ... stop shooting RAW+JPG ...
ok, i got that out of the way ... do you import directly from the camera ??? or directly from card reader into aperture ???
me, i NEVER import directly from card to program ... EVER ...
last week i needed to shoot RAW+JPG, only because i needed quick access to some JPGs and didn't have aperture handy ...
when i returned i copied my card contents to a desktop folder (like i always do) and used the search box and entered JPG ... then i deleted every one - they had served their purpose ... then i dupped the folder of RAW files and then imported into aperture ... no JPGs imported ...
seriously the only way to not have aperture import the JPG with the RAW is to weed out the JPGs (or not shoot RAW+JPG - but i already covered that)

  • Importing High Res. JPG with RAW?

Is there any reason to import JPG images with RAW images? I sometimes shoot high res. JPG with RAW just so I have some high res. JPGs for temporary use immediately after a shoot and for archival purposes, but I can't think of a reason to import JPGs into Lightroom when there is a RAW. Thanks for any clarification.
    Dilip

with one option it let's you know the jpg exists, but you can do absolutely nothing with it, even delete it easily from within lr. The other treats them both seperately, and all controls can work on either file. To each their own I suppose but I see no compelling reason NOT to import them as seperate files, it only adds confusion to the managing of digital assets for me, as lr provides no means of seperating the combo designation after import.
Many times I leave camera on raw+jpg mode even for snapshots, and decide the jpg is good enough and I don't desire to do any processing on the Raw. Other times the raw is easily superior, and the jpg is garbage. Treating them seperate puts me back in control of what I use and how. But, as I said different ways of working call for different ways of handling it; I'm glad we at least get an option to do it either way.

Lightroom 4.1 will not import files with a name containing a backslash "\" I am using a Mac running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Under Preferences I have checked and "Treat the following characters as illegal" is set to "/:"

Your preferences and configurations will not be deleted. Of course, I'd advice you to back it up anyway and then completely remove LR.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 will not import videos with .mpg extension from my pictures folder and keep getting a OSStatus error-54. Is there a way I can import such videos to the iphone library?

iphoto 9.5.1 will not import videos with .mpg extension from my pictures folder and keep getting a OSStatus error-54. Is there a way I can import such videos to the iphone library? Pls help.

This is what that error means:
    -54
    permErr
Software lock on file; Not a subscriber [permissions error on file open]
Download and launch  BatChmod.  Put the videos into a subfolder and drag that folder containing the video files into the Batchmod window.  Make sure you are the owner and have R,W, X access as well as the group.  Everyone will have R only.
Check the Change ownership and privileges, Unlock and Apply to enclosed boxes and then click on the Apply button.  When done try importing the files again.

  • PSE 6.0 will not import JPG's, or .3gp videos, from Motorola Droid

    I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit.
I've tried a number of ways to import pictures (jpg's) from my Motorola Droid:
    1)  Bu using a USB cable connection to the phone.
    2)  By taking the microSD card out of phone and inserting it into a card reader.
    3)  By copying the pics from the microSD card to a folder on the hard drive.
I've tried "from files or folders", and "from camera or card reader".
Each time, PSE, after scanning the card/folder and looking like it is importing the pics just fine, says:  "Nothing was imported, the file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types or the files are already in this catalog."
As I scroll thru the PSE dialog box of the list pics not imported, it says "THE FILE COULD NOT BE COPIED", for the .3gp videos, it says the same thing.
The file names are of the format:
    2010-1-11 12.53.28.jpg
That's the date, followed by a space, followed by the time.
Any ideas?  Is the file name too long or have characters PSE cannot handle?
    Thanks...

I'd ignore Elements, and just drag these jpgs and the video onto the desktop.  Then I'd try to rename one of the jpgs, open Elements, tell it to open that jpg, and see what happens.
I don't expect that to cure your problem, but it's worth a try.  There was a time - 20 years ago - when some applications would refuse to open a document if the name contained forbidden characters.  I haven't heard of that happening in many years, and I'd be stunned if Elements were doing something that dumb in 2010.  If Elements were doing that, this forum would be flooded by other Droid users who are asking the same question.
It's also possible that the problem is not with Elements, but with your particular cell phone.  Elements thinks that these jpgs and video are corrupted.  Maybe they are.  I'd suggest that you reset the Droid, take another picture, and see if Elements "likes" (technical term) the new picture.
You also could narrow down the problem area by opening a picture with another application.  I live in the Mac world, so I don't know what basic applications Microsoft gives you that could open a jpg.  In the Mac World, I'd recommend you try to open one of these jpgs with Preview, or Word or Excel or Powerpoint or Pages, or Numbers, or Keynote.
I'm hoping that one of these applications will refuse to open the jpg, and state that the jpg is corrupted.  That would tell us that Elements is right, and allow us to focus our attention on the Droid phone.
Do you have a digital camera?  Take a picture, and connect your camera to your computer, and see if Elements will read that picture - or also declare that this picture is of an unsupported format.
Hang in there!  Sometimes it can take a while to track down these problems.

  • Aperture does not import jpg:s from certain files.

After reassembled all the programs to a new hard drive in Mac Pro, Aperture does not import certain files with .jpg -photos. Earlier it has succeeded. Changing the photo location does not help. Nor importing as projects. Files are visible when asking to import but the thumbs are not seen on Aperture window.

, I see only the file, where these photos are, not the photo names or thumbs inside the file (Aperture import path).
You mean in the Aperture Import panel the folder, where the jpegs should be, is empty?
Then you may have excluded jpegs from import in your "Import Settings".
Check the above settings in the "Import Settings" options in the "Import Window". I.e-make sure the Raw+Jpeg Pairs option is set to "Both", even if you do not import raws.
After reassembled all the programs to a new hard drive in Mac Pro
Is this new Harddrive your system volume? And are the jpegs you wat to import located on this drive? Or are the on another external volume? If yes, how is this volume formatted?
Have you checked the permissions and ownership of the jpegs?

  • PrE 11 will not import .jpg files from organizer

    Hi,
I just upgraded from PS & PrE 8 to the lastest version 11. I'm running on a Windows 7 pc.  My catalog was successfully converted and new pictures were added.  I now want to create a dvd with both pictures and videos.  I tried various ways to import .jpg files in PrE but some (most) of my files will not import.  I get error messages about the files not being supported (missing codex) or the files being too large.
After reading on the forums and on Adobe help site.  It seems opening and resaving the files in the organizer fix this.  I try and it worked.  As I have many files to import (200+), I wonder if there is a way to do some sort of a batch process for all file.
Secondly, also I read PrE can automatically resize the image file to the project size.  How can this be acheive ?
    Thanks for your help

Please see my answer to this question. It's essentially the same answer I'd give you.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1129183?tstart=0
You can not create a playable DVD or incorporate video and photos in the same project with full resolution photos on it. Video resolution/TV resolution is only 720x480 (standard resolution) or 1920x1080 (high rez).
Premiere Elements has a governor that limits the size of a photo you can add to a video project (which is probably what you're running into). In fact, you'll get much better results if you use LOWER resolution photos in your video project -- 1000x750 pixels for DVDs and standard resolution video and 2000x1500 for BluRays and high-def video.

  • DO NOT import images with no extension

If you import import images with no extension (I have lots of those from Mac OS 9 days) by reference and then consolidate them with the Move option you will encounter a serious problem (at least with Aperture 1.5.1. on an Intel Mac).
If you quit Aperture and launch it again, the thumbnails for those images will show as being referenced and broken. But another part of Aperture believes that they are in the library. The result is that your images ARE in the library, but are unaccessible to Aperture.
You can repair this by fixing the contents of the apfile and renaming the image file, but it is a major pain to do this on a large scale.
Here is the problem I encountered:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/files/dbe9ea5dec3f703abb4efece1249d894-682.htm l
    And here is the solution:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/files/8a3a218630e2b36136612e19b4495ba6-683.htm l

    Which version?
This is not my experience in 1.5.1: files without extensions are silently ignored, no? That's annoying enough!
Unfortunately, I have a lot of Genuine Fractals files that can't even be catalogued, let alone viewed. I have to keep using Portfolio, which deals with GF files just fine.

  • IPhoto 9 (8.1.2 (424) and OSX 10.6.4) will not import jpg's

I purchased and installed iLife '09 yesterday. After downloading the latest software updates to iPhoto 9 (8.1.2 build 424) and OSX (10.6.4) I cannot import jpg's into iPhoto. It says "The file is in an unrecognized format." Under GET INFO, the file kind is "JPEG Image". This same photo imported just fine in iPhoto '08. Obviously, iPhoto '09 is designed to import jpg's. How do I fix this?

Thank you, that worked. I was able to import random jpg's, but NOT able to import any jpg from a scanned picture from my Lexmark X7675. They all failed, but other jpg's imported fine. So the problem is with the scanner. I downloaded the new drivers, but that didn't work. I'll now exit this forum and take up the issue with Lexmark. Thanks for your help.

  • Could not import tables with oci10g\11g connection

    Hi All,
I am using obiee 11g and oracle 11g database for windows64 bit . I could not import the tables from oracle database in admin using OCI 10\11g.
    I did copy tnsnames.ora to {Oracle_BI1}\network\admin directory & {oracle_common}\network\admin directory and Set up TNS_ADMIN to{Oracle_BI1}\network\admin
In addition to that I have set oracle_home to {Oracle_BI1} , path to {Oracle_BI1}\bin , oracle_sid to ORCL. In the user.cmd command too I have set tns_name{Oracle_BI1}\network\admin
When i do lsnrctl or try to open sqlplus , it shows the error. I even copied listener file to {Oracle_BI1}\network\admin directory & {oracle_common}\network\admin directory and Set up TNS_ADMIN to{Oracle_BI1}\network\admin
Do I need to revert the oracle_home,path,tns_admin to original one C:\app\user\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1....
    Am I missing anything?
    Thanks,
    Vishal

When you add tns entry at ORACLE_HOME/network/admin that should work.
Try using tns entry at Data source at connection pool like
    IT =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = foo)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = foo.corp)

  • How to supplant JPG with RAW file weeks later?

    Hi there-
When the Canon S95 came out LR3 didnt recognize or import the RAW .cr2 files. When using the camera I would take photos in both RAW and JPG, use LR3 to import the JPGs and manually copy the .CR2s to a separate directory. I would then tag and otherwise work on the JPGs in my main photo directory in LR3, while the CR2s gathered dust in a different directory.
Now that LR3 does support .CR2, and I have a slow day, is there an easy way to replace all of those JPGs with the relevant RAW file? What happens to the current XMP data, as ideally with the exception of the file extension they will be named the same.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Another way that will recover your develop settings too: Note: I've never tried this - may have missed something, but in case you're game..
    1. Save all jpeg metadata using Ctrl/Cmd-S (saves develop settings too).
    2. Use exiftool to extract all xmp from jpegs to xmp file making sure it will have the same base name as your CR2s.
The command is something like:     exiftool -xmp -b my.jpg > my.xmp
    3. Import the CR2s, or if already imported, do a 'Read Metadata'.
That will transfer all settings from jpegs to CR2 but will make them look unsharp and dull, due to differences in default settings for the two (and in-camera settings). Plus, camera profiles and white balance will not carry over, so you'll have to redo those manually. Also, you may have to set the tone curve to medium instead of linear - not sure about that one.
Then use DevAdjust to adjust the following settings relatively:
    Sharpening +25
    Sharpen Detail +25
    Brightness +50
    Contrast +25
Color NR 25 (can be set absolutely)
Then use CollectionPreseter to set luminance noise reduction based on ISO.
They should look about the same now, since all settings have the same weight, just different starting points, for everything except temperature and tint.
And you'll probably want to enable the profile based lens corrections for the CR2s.
Maybe use compare view to see how you did and fine tune...
If you dont have a lot of jpegs or didnt make many adjustments this may be more trouble than worth, but in case it helps...

  • Match jpg with raw

  • Replacing JPG with RAW

I exported a bunch of raw files to JPG with some other raw converter, before getting aperture.
In my main drive I use the JPGs, and that is what I have imported in my Aperture library (used from their current location).
I have kept the raw files; since I would like to do some tweaking on these now, it would obviously be best if I worked with the raw files.
Can I somehow replace the JPGs with the RAWs and tell aperture to look at the RAW as a master file?
Since I have a lot of keywording, places and faces on these, I would prefer not to input everyting again...
    Thanks,
    Harry

You can import the RAW+JPEG pair and use the JPEGs for now. If/when Apple supports the RAW files, you can just tell Aperture to re-render the RAW files and use those.

  • Is it possible to ignore and not import JPG files when a JPG and raw file of the same name exist?

Is it possible to ignore JPG files on import? I shoot raw + JPG and see no reason to keep the JPGs; I shoot JPG primarily as a backup (I back all the JPGs up online to my smugmug account then delete them before importing the raw files), but they're also occasionally handy if one wants to get a quick print in the field. I know that one can set a preference to "Treat JPEG Files Next to Raw Files As Separate Photos", but even then they still are imported.
As an example, say I have this scenario (not on DSLRS, but on pNs cameras, sometimes a JPG but not raw is captured - I suspect this has to do with how the buffer is filling) with these files on a memory card:
    IMG_0001.JPG
    IMG_0001.CR2
    IMG_0002.JPG
    IMG_0003.JPG
    IMG_0003.CR2
When I import pictures from this folder, I'd like 2 CR2 files and 1 JPG to be imported. I'm even willing to copy the relevant files and drag and drop them onto LR's Library module. But even if I do that, all five files get imported. Thanks!

For this typical example 98% of the image files are transferred while LR is building previews, which is exactly what I was suggesting be avoided.
No, I don't believe that's correct. As I said in my previous post, Lightroom's Import is a two-stage process.....first copy the files from the card, then when that is finished, render whatever previews have been requested.
AFAIK there is nothing unusual about my system, Lightroom has always imported in this two-stage way as far back as I can remember. Based on this I see no 'safety' benefit from copying files first outside Lightroom, then using an ADD import process. On the contrary, as this takes away the possibility of using the "Second Copy on Import" option, as well as having to manually setup import folders, I see nothing but downside from that approach.
Mea culpa, Jim is correct! I checked my Windows 7 system with LR4.2 and I monitored the 'Destination folder' during an import direct from memory card to hard drive. 'Copy and import' showed in the progress bar until all image files were visible using Windows Explorer in the 'Destination folder.' Only after all files had transferred did the progress bar change to ‘Render 1:1 Previews.’ I started using LR1.0 on a Pentium 3 single-core system with Windows XP 32 bit, which I think is when I made this observation. Regardless, it is clear that LR4.2 is using a two-step import process. Thanks Jim for being persistent!
It still begs the question why some people are experiencing very slow imports, damaged image files, and other related import problems from memory cards? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they have 1) 'Rename Files,' 2) 'Automatically write changes into XMP,' or 3) 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' checked in LR preferences. It would be a good idea for anyone experiencing import issues to try an import with these three (3) options unselected.
My apologies to the OP DBarman for going off topic. Hopefully the extra information and observations are helpful.
