LR 1.4.1 Preview Brightness Jumps

When I click on an image in the filmstrip the preview gets displayed (as expected), but within a fraction of a second the preview goes slightly darker (as if you clicked on the lessen exposure button in library mode). The 'Loading' message comes up about the same time, then when the message disappears the image goes bright again.
It is unusable as when trying to compare images the jumps in brightness confuse your sense of how bright they are compared to each other.
Another problem I am having is that when I click the color temperature increase button (in library) the image goes brighter, then if I click the same button again it goes darker. Same in reverse going back down. It is significant - similar to pressing the exposure adjustment clicker. Adjusting color temp in develop doesn't do this.
When the image goes brighter in library while changing color temp, if I switch to develop, it is a different brightness than what library is showing. But when the color temp is pushed another step up or down, library and develop display exactly the same. It is driving me crazy.
When I first start lightroom it sometimes works fine for a few images, but then it starts misbehaving again.
I have tried clearing all my previews, but same problems. Using Vista 32, nVidea 8600 GS video card on external monitor. Canon 40D RAW.
Just downgrading to 1.3 again now.
Note: I noticed the same issues when I installed the buggy 1.4 version when it was first released (for the day I had it installed), so I downgraded to 1.3 which has been fine, but now 1.4.1 is doing the same thing.
Any ideas?

I have my old computer back! Everything was running slowly and with the jumping brightness, even after reverting back to LR 1.3, but I cleared out the cache and it is fast and no jumping pics.
I am flying through my work again now. Will attempt the move to 1.4.1 again when I have some time up my sleeve - although I feel confident that this would have fixed the problem.

Brightness jumps to full when doing full screen application

When I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur
Any solution, cause it's really annoying

How to Stop the preview from jumping when using .avi's??

Ive been having aproblem where the .avi file I have imported will just jump forward , making it impossible to edit.. I have try reconverting th.avi's to lower bitrate, and still it jumps ,, the avi files iam using having been converted from SUPER to .avi with h.264/AVC Video Codec, at 1280 * 720 and 29.97 Fps -> Bitrate 2208 kbs,, if anyone has any suggestions,,??

DV won't handle John's frame size. He may be better off using Desktop mode with something like the Lagarith codec, though Premiere may not edit perfectly smooth with that one either.

Size of PDF grows after saving in Preview

At my work we have a photocopier that also has a scanning feature that emails the scanned document to me as a PDF.
I frequently have to make minor edits to the PDFs in Preview--like flip them 180 degrees, delete blank pages, etc.
I've noticed that most of these documents are 2.2 to 2.3MB in size when I first receive them. After I edit and save them in Preview, they jump up to 3.6 to 3.8MB. Why are they growing when, if anything, they should stay the same or decrease in size???

I'm not sure what exactly is going on, but many apps avoid re-writing the whole file by appending your changes and leaving it at that, if the file format supports it. So instead of saving a new PDF with pages removed, for instance, it is possible (again I'm not sure) that what Preview is doing is marking the pages deleted but not actually deleting them. So instead of "document - pages = smaller file" you may be getting "document + instructions to ignore pages that are not really deleted = larger file."
Are you simply doing a Save after your edits? If so, try doing a Save As to a new name. In many apps, this will write out a whole new file that's smaller because all unneeded data is finally thrown out.
Another example of this is Microsoft Word's "Allow Fast Saves" feature; if it is on, changes (even deletions) are appended as additional instructions that only make the file grow. To set everything straight you would have to Save As a new name.
It is also possible that Preview is using different, less compact PDF compression than the app that saved it before.
If your office has a Mac copy of Acrobat Pro, it might be worth seeing if it saves smaller PDF files since it does not handle files exactly the same way Preview does.

Brightness control problem after returning from Stand By - T500

Hi,
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 under Windows XP SP2.
In Power Manager, I have created a custom power management scheme and set the brightness to 80%. This works fine when I boot up the machine, but when I return from Stand By mode (sleep) the machine automatically sets the brightness to 100%. I will then have to use to brightness control buttons to set it back to 80%. This is very annoying and obviously a bug.
I have the latest BIOS and Power Manager version installed.
Can someone offer a solution please?

I found your post after searching as I hae the exact problem you describe - I turn off the screen using Fn F3 and later when I wake the display the brightness jumps to 100% and I cannot get it to turn down to any level. It's stuck at 100%. Yup, just tried closing-n-opening the lid the screen goes to my previously set brightness level.

Adjust for Brightness Corrections the Camera made

I have some video clips where I am trying to make two types of corrections.
I am using Warp Stabilize to correct for movement in the way I handled the camera during the filming process. Warp Stabilize seems to do a fair job of fixing this, I can accept this for now.
Then I am trying to repair/ adjust where the camera made some auto brightness corrections when the focus was made/moved to a darker object in the scene. It causes intermittent bright and dark lighting in the clip.
I realize both of these situations are my own fault, but I am still trying to learn how to adjust for them.
I tried using the Effect /Color Correction / Brightness and Contrast tool because this seems logical, but the results are not smooth. I set a key-frame on both sides of the problem point on the clip so I can stop/ lock in the effect from making changes to an area that is good/ acceptable. Then I move to the center point between the two key-frames I am holding as correct and make a brightness adjustment (creating a new key-frame). This sounds like it should compensate, but I end up with even more intermittent flashes of bright and dark.
Can anyone tell me if this logic is correct and is this the correct tool I should be using to make this sort of adjustment to a clip The adjustments are not smooth as I would expect from key-frame. And it appears the key-frames I set to hold what is correct are being auto adjusted.
I think there should be a metering tool that I could use to measure/meter Brightness (ie; 1-100) throughout the clip so when I see the brightness is varying away form my desire meter reading I could make an adjustment at that point where brightness varies to bring it back to the metered level I want to hold

I've never used the Brightness/ Contrast adjustment. Curves and Levels work much better. Beyond that - if the aperture change is immediate, then split the clip on the respective point and correct each segment separately. otherwise it seems you do not quite understand how AE keyframes work. You don't "encircle" a problem, you just animate the respective parameters. In your example the only keyframe that actually holds anything useful is the one in the middle, the other two hold neutral default values. It's inevitable that you get additional brightness jumps because you are telling AE to revert to those defaults on the third keyframe, but the exposure is still wrong. Simply makes no sense. The rule of thumb is always to use as few keys as possible, especially on something as tricky as color corrections.

Preview multiple images

When I open a folder with multiple image files, Preview shows the scroll bar fully grey and if I attempt to click on an image, Preview always jumps to the last image instead of allowing me to click on the image I wish. This behavior only started with the change to Yosemite.

Before Yosemite all the thumbnails remained in view and you could just click on the next image.
Preview in Mavericks and Yosemite work the same way with transitions between contact sheet view and single image.
Toggle between option + command + 6 (view contact sheet) and option + command + 1 (view content). When in the view content mode, just use the arrow keys to move in the direction of the next image you want to view.

AME makes all exported videos brighter

Hi, I'm trying to export a project from Premiere Pro CS6 to Adobe Media Encoder to render but I've noticed that all of my videos are coming out over bright, I can see the difference in the preview window in Media Encoder as the video is rendering, it's much much brighter than the original Premiere Pro preview.
I'm outputting to H264 Quicktime, I realise that there are gamma issues with watching videos in quicktime and this is not that, even in other players the video is far brighter than occurs with the gamma issue in quicktime.
Added: Just outputted it in mpg format and the brightness reflects the Premiere preview brightness is still being output above it's original brightness in Premiere. Also tried exporting in Sorensen 3 and got the same brightness issue, so it may just be something specific to .mov files....although I haven't ever noticed it before and I've rendered out many many videos with the same settings in the same way and they all came out fine.

yup, totally understand checking it on a calibrated tv, however this is something that is changing the brightness fundamentally somehow between Premiere and Media Encoder and before a couple of days ago I've never had an issue with it, all my exports were going over to Media Encoder with no differences between what I could see in Premiere and what was rendered out in Media Encoderl. Now, right in the preview in Media Encoder I'm seeing a massive difference from what it looks like in Premiere, everything comes out brighter and more washed out than I've ever experienced before.
.....I've just checked an older project from last week and done a test render to the usual h24 quicktime settings I use and it's come out looking the same as it does in premiere, so it would appear to be something in the specific project itself which is causing the brightness blowout.

Brightness Adjustment in Windows XP

I'm running bootcamp with windows XP NTFS partition on the macbook pro core duo with ati x1600.
Whenever I adjust the brightness the first click down from the max brightness "jumps" down to half as bright, and then the rest of the clicks, with the brightness adjust buttons, gradually get darker. When I boot OS X, the brightness adjustment is gradual the whole way.
I checked to see if maybe it was just because I wasn't running Leopard, but my mom is running tiger as well, and her brightness adjustment in Windows XP is gradual, the way its supposed to be. She also has the core 2 duo macboook pro with the nvidia 8600gt and not the original core duo like me.
What could be causing this problem? Are the ATI drivers not the most compatible with bootcamp or something? I'm using their drivers on the amd.com page specifically made for bootcamp->core duo.
Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that this is an existing issue. I am also using a Macbook Pro with ATI x1600 video card. The brightness adjustment is 50% at first click and then gradual. I too have all the recent updates as far as the drivers are concerned.
To confirm your statement on Nvidia video card.... macbook pro's equipped with this card do not have the brightness adjustment issue that we are reporting.

My 2008 Macbook only charges when it's sleeping. When it's awake, the MagSafe adapter blinks green on and off. I've cleaned the connectors and the problem is still there.

This is a recent problem, only since I updated the last security update from apple has this been happening. No matter where I plug the laptop in (as in, no matter the power source), the magsafe adapter glows green like it's going to charge, that lasts roughly a second and my mac behaves as if it's going to charge (different status bar indicator and brightness jumps).. aaand then the green light shuts off completely, mac brightness & status indicators go back to normal. Then the light comes back on, then shuts off, rinse, repeat. When I put the mac to sleep or shut it down completely, then plug the magsafe in, it works and charges just fine. But then the second I wake the mac up, the orange charge light shuts off and it goes into the green light loop again. Weird issue, just putting it out there to see if anyone's had that happen before and can offer tips. I've tried resetting the SMC and removing the battery when it's shut down, btw. Halp!

How can I stop two instances of the same application?

I have just installed Yosemite about a week ago on my MacBook Pro mid '10 and it's working great except for one little glitch.
Whenever I double-click on a file in my Finder, not only does it open in the assigned dock Application, but a second instance of the same Application pops up on the dock out of nowhere. To be more clear, I have my PDFs set to Preview. I click on a PDF in my Finder and Preview starts jumping. Out of nowhere, another copy of Preview springs up on the dock and starts jumping as well. This opens that same PDF twice on my screen.
I noticed this also happens when I'm installing a .dmg file. Two installers open at the same time when I double-click the icon.
It doesn't happen if I right-click > Open or right-click > Open With.
Any thoughts?

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

ITunes freezing when trying to sync iPhone 5.

I'm at my tethers end.
Last month I had my iPhone replaced at an Apple store, as the battery on my old phone was draining unusually fast (100% to 0% in 2 hours on standby with nothing open). This replaced iPhone has been slightly tempermental, but I have tried to ignore these little glitches (brightness jumping randomly from 100% to the lowest setting for no reason etc (it's not on auto).
The biggest problem I'm having it trying to sync my phone with iTunes. It will not sync my music, often freezing at particular songs, meaning I would have to restart my entire computer for it to work again. Deleting these songs would work for it to continue syncing, but no sooner would it find another song it did not like, which would play on any other media software and had no problems whatsoever with my old phone. It then decided to start freezing on 'downloading safari safe data', so I took steps for it to stop doing that (advanced on safari etc). Now it keeps freezing on step 5 of 5; waiting for changes to be applied. Frankly I'm absolutely SICK of this, as I'd like to get some music on my phone at some time, and now I can't even make any alterations to my phone.
I've tried..
*Restoring my iPhone ( which went awfully because my backup dissapeared, meaning I had to restore with a months old backup. I triple checked that my backup had worked but when it came to needing it *poof*.
* Checking Winsock providers.
* Converting back to older versions of iTunes.
* Restarting my computer a million and one times.
* Deleting 'problem' songs, but now I can't even reach that stage of syncing.
PLEASE HELP. I'm so frustrated with this. I've always been a loyal customer to Apple but frankly I get sick of always having problems. There's not been one apple phone which has not stopped working within warranty and needed a replacement. When we're paying this much for a phone we expect it to actually WORK.

This problem is quite common, but I have not been able to figure out what causes it. My best bet is that it's a USB issue, and I have found a workaround that makes synchronising possible when all else fails. For the record, I have tried all of the potential solutions on these forums without lasting success. Here's what worked for me.
(Windows 7 32bit, iPhone 4S, iTunes 10.6.1.7)
First of all, make sure you have a good wi-fi signal in the region of the PC you are syncing with. Then -
1) Start iTunes.
2) Connect phone via USB.
3) Left click on phone in iTunes.
4) On the Summary page check "Sync with this phone over Wi Fi"
5) On the phone go to Settings>General>iTunes wi-fi sync
6) Tap on Sync now.
The phone should sync via wi-fi, even though it is connected via USB. It didn't seem any slower to me than syncing via the cable, and more importantly it worked, and the backup went smoothly. I've tried it several times now with no problems.
Also, if you have a lot of apps you need to synchronise or you are re-arranging the app windows using iTunes you can sync in the normal way from the PC if you do it immediately after the wi-fi sync, because iTunes does not run the backup again. It probably won't run two backups within a few minutes of one another.
It's all a bit of a fiddle, and Apple/MS needs to get a fix for it, but if this method works for you at least you have a good backup should you flush your phone down the toilet!

REQUEST: U100 1.0G Bios with WIFI on startup

Hello Svet,
Is it possible to make a bios with the wireless card on at startup? My f11 key is broken so I just want to have it on all the time. Also Fn + Ctrl swap. Also have OC on by default when on AC power, but not on by default when running on battery. One more thing (I think this is standard.. can't remember) but when plugging into AC power brightness jumps up to 100% and can be reduced after.
If you need to know right now I'm running your 1.09 bios with fn + ctrl swap.. and have not tried the 1.0G but assume it should work fine.

PDF in Safari Question

If viewing a pdf in safari, can you set it up so that there are controls, like in preview to jump to the next page, etc. Or do I always have to open it in preview....

I am wondering, won't 'page-down' suffice? Or is that not what you're looking for specifically? I know it doesn't skip to the beginning of the next pdf page, and it also means using the keyboard instead of the mouse/trackpad - both of which can be a bit annoying.
I guess Apple will have to address that in Leopard or perhaps in 10.4.7. Oh well...

Scrollbars, artboards, resizing and other minor tweaks offer

I hope Adobe reads these forums, so here i post some bugs to fix, minor tweaks and my personal wishes for Illustrator. I guess many of them are not so hard to fix, but will make Illustrator much better.
BUGS:
- fix alt-scroll bug in pixel preview (viewport jumps to unpredicted locations)
- layers panel becomes black when dragging a layer and scrolling at the same time (and the panel has enough layers to scroll)
MINOR TWEAKS:
- recolor artwork on the fly when dragging sliders in the color panel (not after releasing mouse button)
- option to hide edges of inactive artboards only
- resize crop areas to both sides (like drawing objects) when pressing alt
- NORMAL scrollbars
- in Appearance panel when clicking an eye and dragging mouse down/up toggle visibility of lower/upper items, but not dragging the item (make behavior same as in layers panel)
- chahge value of numeric fields on hover and drag (not on click and drag, like in Photoshop)
- when resizing, snap objects to their original size and position even when snapping is turned off
- not squeeze/streth text when resizing area type
- make hexadecimal field in color picker dialog 3 pixels wider so that all 6 characters fit in it
- make status bar remember my choise of what to show
- undo/redo functionality inside live color dialogue (!!!)
- in view menu the word "show" shouldn't change for "hide", but a tick should appear/disappear
- apply gradient by clicking with the gradient tool on an object
- fonts preview in the drop-down menu in control panel
- make stop button actually stop the progress when an effect is applying
WISHES:
- Photoshop's actions panel
- right-click menu is really useful why not use it and put more often used commands in there like flip horisontal/ vertical when an arrow tool is active
- fireworks' pathfinder
- gradient stroke
- labeling of crop areas (and possibly everything a slice has)
- zoom and pan art when a dialogue window is open (like in Photoshop)
Also SVG support back to Bridge.
